  • In 2025 we celebrate our 300th anniversary, the first working railway to do so! We are really excited and have big plans... including special events and recreating a section of wooden waggonway at Causey. As we're not running trains at the moment, due to the coronavirus pandemic, we worry that some of these plans may not go ahead. With your support, we can change that.
Mark, one of our volunteers, explains the history of the Tanfield Waggonway and why celebrating our 300th in 2025 is so important.
Please support the railway by donating towards our Coronavirus Appeal. This will ensure that our volunteers can reopen and continue to preserve the world's oldest railway once the Coronavirus pandemic subsides. Please donate here - www.gofundme.com/f/help-suppo...

Great drawings, where did you find them?
Great video, very informative. I am studying this subject for a presentation the starts with wooden railways and ends with the Liverpool and Manchester Railway opening. The history you cover is indeed important.
    Thanks.

One thinks of the last horse shunters being retired in the mid-1960s and if it was not for the absence of iron-plated wooden rails, not much would seem to have changed.
