At least you're aware now! But yes, listening comes into play in essentially every section of the AP Spanish exam. There are some multiple choice questions that are based on audio sources alone and audio sources paired with texts/infographics, an audio source that you'll have to use on the written essay portion of the exam, as well as an audio track for the interpersonal speaking portion of the exam, so that can be a bit daunting since listening is crucial for this exam! Even if you're struggling to understand the audios, just try to piece together the components you are able to make out from the audio and use those to make meaning of the audio as a whole. You've got this!

It seems hefty but I think it could be possible with a good amount of smart study. I know you are learning it as well and I’m curious what your thoughts about that are.
@@stephenjackson5065 Yes, absolutely! I would encourage anyone to learn Mandarin Chinese. First things first though, despite what anyone else tells you, it is NOT nearly as hard as it’s made out to be, especially given that you have Spanish under your belt already. It will take a lot of diligent practice to learn it at an AP-level within a year, but it’s definitely possible. The Barron’s book for AP Chinese is actually really good, so I’d totally recommend that as well. It takes some practice mastering the tones, memorizing the characters, and the like, but it is very rewarding, I promise you! The funny thing is, though, that AP Exam happened to be the one I had to cancel this past year due to scheduling conflicts. Loved your suggestions, especially made sure to write a thesis for my cultural comparison and that helped me finish strong! Thank you for taking the time and giving genuinely helpful material!! :))
thank you so much for this !! i took so many notes lol. i’m taking the exam next week and i’m really nervous. even though i’m a native speaker i’m used to speaking kinda informally but you helped me with my vocab and transitional phrases :D i’m mainly anxious about the reading section though. would you say that section was hard ? just so i can know what to expect :)
Well, you can definitely speak informally for the interpersonal speaking (most of the time anyway), but yes, the presentational speaking should be more formal. And I can't really speak much on the difficulty of the reading because I took the exam during lockdown last year, so it was exclusively speaking. The reading practices I'd done though prior to the exam though weren't too bad though, so you should be fine!
Thank you so much, i was so stressed about the speaking part but now after hearing other people speak (thanks to the link) i now feel way better knowing what not to do when speaking.
thank you so much, im in the process of preparing for the AP exam and this seriously helped clear up a lot of questions I had before diving in the collegeboard past exams
Hey zach, great video man. I definitely feel better about this test. Online learning sucked this year and I wish it could've been in person because I know I would've learned a LOT more this year. I take the test in 2 days.
Muchas gracias. Muy impresionante! I am studying to take a Spanish world language exam and came across your video. I have a feeling the exams are similar so this was very helpful.
Super informative and useful video! Please make more videos on the AP Spanish Language Exam! I'm having a lot of trouble learning Spanish and these videos are a massive help to me. Thank you 😊
Thank you so much for this, I have the AP test next week, and the only parts of the exam i know will do well on are on the writing parts. The conversation for me is a bit hard to drag out, the cultural comparison just stumps me and the multipule choice part i would always get around 50% on(because i some times suck at reading in spanish, and usually i have to read a passage twice to fully understand it). Thanks for this Video!!! Now i know what i should study!
I desprately want to get a five and be fluent by the end of the year, so I'm trying to study and prepare at the start of it. I know that getting a 5 on this exam in combination with my ACT score and my attempt at boosting my GPA this year will give me way more opportunities and I just generally love the language, but I will have to work harder than everyone else in my class because I'm currently the only native english speaker. The only other person whose native language isn't Spanish speaks Portugese.
Thank you so much for this video. My exam is tomorrow and my teacher didn't teach us anything, we just took a bunch of practice tests all year. I didn't even know there was a presentation on the exam. I went from Spanish 3 to AP Spanish (I skipped Spanish 4). I didn't take Spanish last year. So, I forgot most of my Spanish, but you brought back some hope. Thank you!
My test is on Friday and this was insanely helpful! I feel like I've learned a good amount of Spanish this year, but hardly anything about the format of the exam 😅 Thank you so much!
Ahhhh my A.P. Test is tmw and I’m so nervous!!! I will let u know how it went... Also so many people are commenting like a few minutes ago lol (edit) we won’t get the results till July so I will tell u then but i think it went really well!! This video is a lifesaver!!
me as a heritage speaker im taking the exam and it’s interesting seeing problems for people who learned spanish in school… like for example i get but also don’t get how people would mistake injuría for injury, and everything about pronounciation is a whole thing i just don’t understand
Since I took the AP Spanish exam in 2020, the exam was exclusively speaking, so I can't really provide a ton of useful feedback in that regard; however, typically, there are 4 sources you need to complete in 40 minutes, so you'll most likely want to average about 10 minutes per passage.
@@ZacharyMcCormick11 i woke up sick from my second vaccine dose🏃♀️🏃♀️but I powered through and I’m a confident 4? If I’m lucky a 5? All things considered I think it went well🤞🤞
Perhaps I could! That’s a good idea, and I can definitely try to come up with some sort of video on that topic. Thank you for the suggestion! And to answer your question, I honestly didn’t study a whole lot for the AP Spanish Exam, but that’s only because the 2020 Exam was just speaking. Really all I’d done to study solely for the purpose of the AP Exam was practice speaking exercises from my review book and the College Board. Had the conditions of the exam been “normal,” I probably would have studied more consistently. I’d definitely advise doing a little bit of practice every day, even if it’s only for 10 minutes or so. Learning and mastering a foreign language is merely a matter of consistent practice, little by little. Hope that helps, and best of luck! I’m sure you’ll do great!
thank you!! I feel very unprepared for the exam at the moment, and this video helped me feel like I have a plan. One question, when did you begin studying for the exam?
Yes, you will definitely be most prepared for that portion of the exam if you’re familiar with Spanish and/or Latin American culture. You will always be asked to compare some general theme or topic between your own community to that of another Spanish-speaking country. You can often get by without having to know super specific details regarding Spanish or Latin American culture, as in, you could make a more general comparison; however, just know that, in doing so, you may not earn a 4 or 5 on that strand of the rubric. You also are scored on your control of language, so even if your cultural knowledge is a bit lacking, you can still earn points for the quality and accuracy of your speaking itself. But yes, to answer your question, College Board will always prompt you to make some sort of cultural comparison. Since this is the AP Spanish Language *AND Culture* Exam, the ultimate goal is to ensure that you are proficient in both the language and the culture. Hope that helps!
Jenny jeong of course! The book I used and referenced in this video was Cracking the AP Spanish Language and Culture Exam from the Princeton Review. I had the 2019 version of the book, but you’re definitely more than welcome to get an updated version. If you’d like to see some additional AP-style writing prompts, I’d also check out the CollegeBoard’s past FRQs. There’s a link to that in the description. Best of luck, and happy studies!
Of course! And no, I'm actually just wrapping up my senior year of high school! I'm struggling through AP season with the rest of you at the moment haha. I'm going to Purdue University this July to study actuarial science, Spanish, and Italian studies, so I'm really excited about that!
This video is great! Would you say that the multiple-choice questions were difficult at all? In terms of how complex the Spanish was in the audio and reading?
Oh... I can't really give you a direct answer here. I took AP Spanish last year (2020), and due to COVID, the entire exam was exclusively speaking, so I didn't have to answer any multiple-choice questions on the exam. However, when I was taking a practice exam, I didn't find the audios or texts terribly difficult, and none of the topics covered were terribly obscure. In fact, I'd almost argue that some of the answers can be found just by gathering a very broad and general meaning of the text and/or audio, so my biggest tip would be not to get too bogged down on one particular word or phrase you may be unfamiliar with. Just make sure to allocate your time accordingly, and you should be fine.
I'm taking the exam in a few hours and even though I'm a native speaker I'm definitely going to struggle. I think the most important part of the exam is creativity, something that I lack so I'm kinda nervous.
I haven't really thought of the exam that way, but I suppose you're right. AP readers do tend to like essays and cultural comparisons that are bit more unusual than the rest. If you were to do a cultural comparison with a lesser known Spanish-speaking community or present a nuanced argument in your written essay, then I'm sure you'll increase your chances of scoring well on those portions of the exam!
Thank you so much for making this video! It really helped clarify some questions I had about the exam. My main concern is that Idk enough Spanish words, like in class when we get practice articles and practice email prompts I can barely translate it. How long did you study for the exam?
This was very helpful as I am taking the AP exam tomorrow without taking an AP class lol. One question I have is how to be able to understand what the audio is saying? I've listened to examples and can't focus on the voices because of all the background noise plus they speak way too fast where if there is a single word I do not know, I don't know when that word ends and a new word begins which is quite troublesome
when writing in the essay portion of the exam, do we need to cite direct evidence/ use quotations “” or do we just paraphrase for our evidence (which is what my teacher said)?
So long as you aren't directly citing huge extracts from the sources, you should be fine. Ideally, I'd opt more for paraphrasing because it shows the AP reader that you're able to gather the main ideas from the sources without needing to copy the text word-for-word; however, you're definitely allowed to use either/both. Honestly, I would say to include a little bit of both just to keep your essay a bit more varied in structure, if that makes sense. Hope that helps, and good luck!
you are such a g for making this. my exam is tomorrow and you just condensed a whole year into 47 minutes. may both sides of your pillow be cold for all of eternity

Thank you so much! I'm so glad I could help you feel more prepared!
This is the most wholesome and informative shit I've seen in a while. As a person studying last minute for the exam tomorrow, as well as in Indian person, I give the rights and titles of "that Indian youtuber that explains things I don't understand in class". Hope you and the fam are good bro!
Thanks, I appreciate it!
Loved your suggestions, especially made sure to write a thesis for my cultural comparison and that helped me finish strong! Thank you for taking the time and giving genuinely helpful material!! :))
Of course! I'm so glad that you found this video helpful!
Thank you good sir
Of course, glad I could help!
thank you so much for this !! i took so many notes lol. i’m taking the exam next week and i’m really nervous. even though i’m a native speaker i’m used to speaking kinda informally but you helped me with my vocab and transitional phrases :D i’m mainly anxious about the reading section though. would you say that section was hard ? just so i can know what to expect :)
@@ZacharyMcCormick11 just got my results yesterday and i got a 5 !!! this video really helped me. thank you so much
Thank you so much, i was so stressed about the speaking part but now after hearing other people speak (thanks to the link) i now feel way better knowing what not to do when speaking.
THANK U SM BRO I HAVE MINES TMR THIS WAS RLLY USEFUL
just took mine today and i promise you i watched this video on replay this whole week, it REALLY HELPED
My AP is tomorrow😭😭 thank youu

thank you so much, im in the process of preparing for the AP exam and this seriously helped clear up a lot of questions I had before diving in the collegeboard past exams
I have my exam tomorrow and im studying last minute-- this helped so much
I'm so glad to hear that! Best of luck tomorrow! You'll do great!

Thanks so much! Glad I could help!
Thank u for this I’m struggling sm trying to study for both apwh and ap Spanish exams and didnt find much videos on ap Spanish until this video.
Studying the morning of 😭 Covid laziness got me down bad
I feel you; I think we all can identify with that this year, but I'm sure you did great!
im out here studying the day before cus ive been procrastinating 😍😍 thanks for the vide tho i hope it helps me
I hope so too! Let me know if there's anything you'd like me to help with!
Hey zach, great video man. I definitely feel better about this test. Online learning sucked this year and I wish it could've been in person because I know I would've learned a LOT more this year. I take the test in 2 days.
Yeah, I feel you. Online learning was definitely unideal, but we've almost made it through this school year! Best of luck on your exam(s)!
This is so detailed. Ily, Zach, you're amazing
Glad I could help!! Happy studies ❤️
Muchas gracias. Muy impresionante! I am studying to take a Spanish world language exam and came across your video. I have a feeling the exams are similar so this was very helpful.
Perhaps they will be similar! I'm glad I could help!
thank you so much for this !!! im cramming for my ap spanish exam tmw and your video was so helpful
you goated bro. my exam tomorrow
god bless this man may your life be prosperous
Thank you so much haha
Truly the best- so thorough and organized!
Wow this is super helpful! Thank you for including important vocab words/phrases, I'll try to use them when I take the test :D
Great! I'm so glad I could help!
Super informative and useful video! Please make more videos on the AP Spanish Language Exam! I'm having a lot of trouble learning Spanish and these videos are a massive help to me. Thank you 😊
bruh god bless you hopefully i get a 5
Thank you so much for this, I have the AP test next week, and the only parts of the exam i know will do well on are on the writing parts. The conversation for me is a bit hard to drag out, the cultural comparison just stumps me and the multipule choice part i would always get around 50% on(because i some times suck at reading in spanish, and usually i have to read a passage twice to fully understand it). Thanks for this Video!!! Now i know what i should study!
i take mine this Wednesday haha. good luck!
@@melanieguerrero2758 Thanks!!! Good luck to you too!!!
Currently watching this at midnight before the exam so helpful and makes me so much more confident!
I'm so glad! I hope the exam went well for you!
This video was super helpful! I'm more confident for the test tomorrow after watching this video. Thank you!! 😄
No problem! Glad I could help!
Thank you!
No problem! Happy to help clarify anything!
I’m a freshman doing the APSpanLang and I’m a bit nervous but this advice is badass 😩
Glad to hear that! You'll do just fine!
What an absolute legend, taking the test tomorrow!
SAME! so scared
Don't worry! You've got this!
Best of luck! You'll do great!
My test is on Friday and this was insanely helpful! I feel like I've learned a good amount of Spanish this year, but hardly anything about the format of the exam 😅 Thank you so much!
No problem! Happy to help!
I’m taking the exam tomorrow and I’m nervous 😬 I hope I do well!!
Thank you so much :) I appreciate you so much. This was really insightful and I needed this a lot !!
Ahhhh my A.P. Test is tmw and I’m so nervous!!! I will let u know how it went...
Also so many people are commenting like a few minutes ago lol (edit) we won’t get the results till July so I will tell u then but i think it went really well!! This video is a lifesaver!!
Sounds good! You've got this though! And yes, in the past couple hours, the comments on this video have just about doubled haha
@@ZacharyMcCormick11 thank uuuuuuu
I shared this video with all my friends taking it also. This video really helped!!!
No problem!
Glad to hear that! I'm glad you found this video helpful!
Awesome Video! Just starting to study and your information is super helpful.
Great video. It walks me through the AP Spanish Exam guidelines and requirements.
Great! I’m so glad I could be of assistance!
me as a heritage speaker im taking the exam and it’s interesting seeing problems for people who learned spanish in school… like for example i get but also don’t get how people would mistake injuría for injury, and everything about pronounciation is a whole thing i just don’t understand
Thank you Zach for providing us with this information you’re honestly the GOAT! I have a question though how long did you spend reading each passage?
Since I took the AP Spanish exam in 2020, the exam was exclusively speaking, so I can't really provide a ton of useful feedback in that regard; however, typically, there are 4 sources you need to complete in 40 minutes, so you'll most likely want to average about 10 minutes per passage.
You sir are doing gods work🙌🙌was nervous asf about my test tomorrow but I’m feeling better🏃♀️🏃♀️🏃♀️
I'm sure you did great! How do you think it went?
@@ZacharyMcCormick11 i woke up sick from my second vaccine dose🏃♀️🏃♀️but I powered through and I’m a confident 4? If I’m lucky a 5? All things considered I think it went well🤞🤞
Great! I'm glad you thought it went well! Kudos to you for powering through it!
ohh and how much time did u study for ap Spanish? btw maybe you can make a "how I manage my time" video lol
One question, when did you begin studying for the exam?
idk what i would do without this vid!! ty!
update: i passed with a 4
Of course!
I have a question, for the presentational speaking, we have talk about culture ?
Hope that helps!
you are an angel. such a thorough review so helpful❤️❤️
Thank you! Glad I could help!
You did a great job! Thank you for sharing this info with my students. They very much appreciate your tips!
hi, can you recommend me the book to study practice writing and preparing for the exam?
Jenny jeong of course! The book I used and referenced in this video was Cracking the AP Spanish Language and Culture Exam from the Princeton Review. I had the 2019 version of the book, but you’re definitely more than welcome to get an updated version. If you’d like to see some additional AP-style writing prompts, I’d also check out the CollegeBoard’s past FRQs. There’s a link to that in the description. Best of luck, and happy studies!
Me watching this the day of the exam🧍🏽♀️
thank u for the helpful video! out of curiosity, are u a college freshman? and where are u studying now?
Of course! And no, I'm actually just wrapping up my senior year of high school! I'm struggling through AP season with the rest of you at the moment haha. I'm going to Purdue University this July to study actuarial science, Spanish, and Italian studies, so I'm really excited about that!
Gracias por tu video, ¡voy a mostrarlo a mis estudiantes!
¡Genial! ¡Estoy tan contento de poder ayudar!
Got a 4 ur the best!
my Spanish ap exam is tomorrow i was so worried until i saw this video
Glad I could alleviate some of your stress! Best of luck tomorrow!
12:57 my teacher never said this was optional so all my essays have a counter argument paragraph lol.
We're all here preparing for tomorrow 😭😹
We are all cramming for the test tomorrow.
Today is the Im having the ap Spanish exam and this is so helpful! Thank you so much 😊
I'm so glad to hear that you found this video helpful! And no problem at all!
Used these tips and I got a 5!! Tysm
That’s great to hear! Congrats!!!
this was soooo helpful thank u sm you're an angel
Glad this was helpful for you! Good luck on your exam!
Man my exam is tomorrow and my teacher taught us NOTHING.... praying that being fluent in Spanish will carry me 🙏🙏

Watching this 7 hours before my exam, am I cooked?
today is my AP Spanish exam, I'm nervous I hope I pass my exam ☹️
when writing in the essay portion of the exam, do we need to cite direct evidence/ use quotations “” or do we just paraphrase for our evidence (which is what my teacher said)?
So long as you aren't directly citing huge extracts from the sources, you should be fine. Ideally, I'd opt more for paraphrasing because it shows the AP reader that you're able to gather the main ideas from the sources without needing to copy the text word-for-word; however, you're definitely allowed to use either/both. Honestly, I would say to include a little bit of both just to keep your essay a bit more varied in structure, if that makes sense. Hope that helps, and good luck!
