Went to junior high with this kid.. he was great but he and a few others took the easiest path to college. Private school football in Texas is where everybody with money goes so there’s not a lot of competition. You’ll look amazing in private school but once you play a public school you’re just average. A TOP quarterback will play his freshman year and make a difference. Look at Tua or the Clemson quarterback. He could’ve been at any SEC school but went to Arizona?! Easy path again it seems like...

    • @wickedlateok1697

Agreed. I played with his oldest brother and in just four years of high school he played at 6 different schools. After all that, his brother only ended up as a reserve linebacker at Central Arkansas. Absolutely ridiculous; he never got the chance to live out a normal high school career because Gunnell Sr was deadset on him being a 5-star recruit. His older brother was a real nice guy tho, good athlete too, but definitely not a 5-star athlete. Though that's all hindsight now. I remember their dad being super obnoxious and screaming from the stands "my son's gonna be in the NFL!" and claming his oldest son was getting offers from Bama and Oregon, which were all total delusions because he ended up being a reserve linebacker at Central Ark. I'm sure it was his father who paid for this cringey video to be made about Grant, making him look like a deity and calling him "the Lebron of football" is just sickening. St Pius X was nothing but kids from College Park High School beating up on nobody homeschool teams and it's no wonder why alot of these kids, like Gunnell and Chase Lane, ended up being underwhelming in college. You're right about Grant taking the easy route because look at where he is now: his fourth college (an FCS school) and he hasn't had solid playing time since 2020.
This video is already aging really poorly. I wouldn't even be surprised if he was a backup at SHSU. I don't even think it's his fault. He was a nice kid and definitely a great athlete but he and many others were hyped to oblivion. This just goes to show why you don't overhype children. If his football career doesn't work out, I really hope Grant doesn't look back at himself as a failure because he didn't amount to the "Lebron of football" crap this video promised he'd be…because it's nearly impossible to fill those shoes no matter how flashy the documentary about your life is. I imagine his life would’ve panned a lot nicer had he just been a 6A public school QB, developed honest stats instead of beating up on no-name homeschool academies, committed to a pass-heavy group of 5 college that really wanted him like North Texas or Wyoming, and THERE he could’ve racked up a name for himself. But instead they made a great athlete look like the next Tom Brady, which he simply never was.

@@wickedlateok1697 Do you still live in Houston? I used to go to St Pius and lets just say the football team hasn't got any better. It has become more of a strong baseball school than football. I transferred there 2nd semester 2023.

@@enz0405 nah I don’t but I knew tons of people who went to St Pius X. It was essentially College Park HS, Campus at Independence Heights because half the team was zoned to College Park HS in The Woodlands, which is why the team was so good for a while. They literally recruited the best players from that school, Grant being one of many. I’ve noticed they fell off hard after Grant left but it wasn’t solely him, it was the entire team. I mean seriously, like College Park’s entire varsity O-line left after being recruited by St Pius X’s head coach. Like 9 people in the clip at 1:33 are College Park kids. I went to Waltrip HS which isnt far from St Pius X and they tried recruiting us too, but nobody budged. Our head coach was LIVID and basically banned the Pius staff from contacting any students

Good job young man, but you haven’t played with the big boy’s yet. Maybe you’ll get that shot at Auburn since you didn’t have the sense to pick a Texas School. Good luck with the next chapter, we will be watching.

Private schools are in some cases, are like colleges, they do recruit players. They get players from local HS's where second teamers can become stars in the private schools. I know of some schools having kids from all over the nation and they beat some of the best teams in the state of Texas. So that is why public schools in Texas do not want to recognize the private schools nor play them.

He was just a basketball player but played qb as freshman n although the head coach begged him to play he just played bball after his first year. He is now in his mid thirties and a doctor n just so down to earth n lovable n handsome! God Bless
