Casio Oceanus is a fantastic watch. It's one of those watches that is so much better in the metal than in pictures and videos. The blue ring around the dial is much less noticeable, the polish sections are done fantastically, and the little polished section on the bracelet just goes to show how much attention to detail was paid in making this watch.
I don't know if the Alpinist is over rated, but I'm a fan. The green face coordinates well with navy, grey, or any shade of brown, which covers most of my wardrobe.
Fair enough. I suppose my gripe with it is that it’s specs allude to maximum versatility yet it has a green dial which is not as versatile when it comes to style. However I guess the watch wasn’t made for that intention anyways.
I think maximum versatility is not a big deal if you own more than one watch. I like my watches to be up for my desk diving daydream tasks. The office is already bland enough. It don't need another beige watch.
Same! Got one two weeks ago when the watch store at our mall just reopened after Corona lockdown. They were desperate to sell so I got a huge discount after a bit of haggling.
tigre tigre The movement works really well and is very accurate. I don’t see anything in my post about sharing unsolicited negative comments from an obvious noob. Do you?

I bought a Seiko Sarw041 for around $711 (used) and I cannot happier. It feels really nice being made of titanium and the watch has a pristine look to it. Seiko's really seem to be the best value for the money in the $500-$1000 range.
I'd put the Orient Polaris on that list, maybe it's a little lower quality than the others, but for a retail price of $575 with an Automatic movement with GMT complication and power reserve it's pretty hard to beat in the value category. I just reviewed it ans I think it's a keeper.
I ordered the Orient Bambino Version 4 Blue dial yesterday for my first "real" watch. Can't wait to see it in person because I was told the pictures and videos don't do it justice.
@@TeddyBaldassarre On another note from this particular video, I happen to see the first Seiko you chose for this video today and was blown away. What a freaking gorgeous watch. Seiko really knows how to build a beautiful watch. The Casio in this video really surprised me. That thing is beautiful and I had no idea. They need to have a separate luxury name for a watch like that, like Hyundai has Equus, and Genesis.
The Alpinist is still one of my grails. I prefer it with the bracelet, but it’s always displayed on that sub-standard strap. As far as the color is concerned, it also is available in a white dial.
You are spot on with the Casio Oceanus. And if I'm not mistaking, it also features the same Zaratsu polishing technique as used in Grand Seikos! Also, the newer Oceanus feature traditional Japanese cut glass bezel inserts along side other traditional Japanese finishes for the case... but I think they jump the 1000USD mark...
Hey, proud new owner of an Alpinist and yes, it's pretty hard to match with stuff, but I love it because of its green dial, my favorite color being green and the meaning I gave it. Being "the Alpinist" it gets me to remind myself always to get better than my previous self, even in those moments that I feel real down. I just sit sometimes and contemplate looking at the watch (the sweeping seconds is always fascinating, in my opinion). Also, this video is a real eye-opener for the diversity in watches. The Seiko SBDC wears extremely well. I usually wear an SKX013 (38mm) day to day but the SBDC (44mm) fits amazingly. Even better than an SKX 007/009. If you have a smaller wrist like I do don't be afraid. They wear like a 40mm watch.
Great Video... again! Glad to see the Orient Star Star Seeker being mentioned. I picked it up a few weeks ago and I can't stop wearing it, absolutely love it. I was fortunate to pick it up for $450. I also own the Alpinist and I totally don't think it is overrated. It absolutely deserves the love it gets.
I have the Triton, and Alpinist. With an after market strap on both. They some of the most incredible watches I've had at that price. They both punch way up
I have two Seikos: a SBDC051 which I've fitted with a black waffle strap to give it more of a vintage feel. Plus a Pressage SARX035 (baby GS). They really are both excellent pieces.
You can really tell that there was a lot of thought that went into this video. Congrats on making this full time! let us know when that Seiko sponsorship comes through lol
I discovered the Seiko Presage line recently. They have automatic movements and come in various dial layout and color schemes. They have a 1950s retro look to them. The cost is reasonable at under $500.
You missed one: Seiko Brightz - SDGM001 and SDGM003 aka the “”Grand Cocktail” - like a cross between a Grand Seiko and a cocktail time. Powered by 6R15. They are still available.
Hi. I got my sarb017 last year. Like it so much because it is different than my other watches and it just looks interesting in my opinion. Got the sarb035 and 033 a few weeks ago and they are lovely.
I never commented on your previous intro to avoid coming across as too negative but I really do like the current intro a lot more, much less pretentious. Great review, I enjoy your presentation style. Keep on killing it Teddy.
I think the Seiko Prospex SBDC051, SBDC053, and SBDC055 should have also made the list. They are the 62MAS inspired divers. Similar in spec to the BaBy Marine Master.
The Seiko Sarw013 urushi can also be had for $1000, has a 6r21 28800bhp movement, sapphire glass, hand laquered dial by an artisan and a power reserve...best seiko dress watch easily for the price
Hi Teddy - I don’t think the Alpinist is over-rated. I like it because it’s a unique looking watch - definitely one of a kind - and a watch that is well-built. Certainly, it’s not everyone’s taste, but it has a real fan club - even its own FB group.
Seiko Alpinist overated? Nope. Pre this crazy lockdown I went on an 8 country roadtrip. 5 of the them in the Alps. SARB017 was only watch I took. From eating out in fancy restaurants to trecking in the mountains was amazing. Then when you consider I've also scuba dived with it many, many time on vacations (I only take one watch on holidays) down 41 meters on the wrecks of the Zenobia off Cyprus and couple deeper off Malta (only coz I'm a watch nerd, I obviously wear a dive computer too) it's my perfect one watch seamless solution. Nice upload Teddy. So tempted with the Orient Triton. It's very much an affordable "Orient Saturation Diver" really enjoying working my way though your videos, a top channel IMO :-)
That sounds like a good combo!👍 I quite like the look of the Duro -- I was surprised to discover that Casio made watches like that! I know now, of course, but for some reason I'd always assumed that they only made G-Shocks and those iconic rectangular digitals.
If you pause the video on the 12:06 closeup and the second shot, is it just me, or are there some misaligned hourmarkers or minutetracks? 🤔 1k$ and the normal Seiko qc issues? It is hard to justify a seiko purchase if third of the sold watches have issues...
You're just seeing what you want to see. Most people want to see misalignment so they think it's maligned. It looks fine. The reflection light source is what's changing the center of hour markers to appear that it's slightly off centered, but it's not.
@@gilbertoflores7397 for example the second shot of the presage 12:13, the baton in 6 is misaligned, say what you will 😂 but i agree, the qc problems has made us look at their watched differently, so what does that tell? 😉
Hi Teddy, I love the look of the Casio Oceanus and Seiko Cocktail Time; good choices for this list. I also want to thank you very much for introducing me to the Seiko SARD line. It fits in perfect with my style. On a different note, I notice that the camera is zoomed out more than in your last video. I like it better this way as it shows off more of your wall pieces.
The SARX line is amazing. I have the 055, and it's an amazing everyday watch. Very flexible and mixes well with almost any type of clothing. I'm surprised that I own three watches in the list. Seiko Cocktail (Manhattan and Blue Moon), Orient Star Classic elegant (the white one. It was on sale). Maybe I'll get the marine master one day, before I try to get the Grand Seiko snowflake.
@@JohnnyTrulove Both. With the metal bracelet, it comes out looking sporty and looks well with casual clothes, but once you go leather, it becomes dressy as well. The only problem for the latter is the size. While I think it's in a pretty good spot to do both, some people prefer something smaller for a dress watch. I'm my opinion, you can't go wrong with the Sarx055. It's versatile, has a solid workhorse movement, and an very interesting dial. Get it while you still can, dude.

Finally some Citizen love from Teddy, haha. Citizen Eco Drive is what got me into watches. I've gotta throw out that the Citizen Tsuno Chronograph Racer is a fantastic watch, and the reason why I'm now into vintage Citizen and Seiko.
Seiko SARX 055: it looks so much better in life than it does in even your pics (which are pretty decent). I agree that it gets about as close to the Grand Seiko as the regular line is going to get. Alpinist: why beat a dead horse? I really like it. It is gone but never forgotten. I should have gotten another one.
Seiko has a handful of watches in Presage line with enamel dials (white, black, blue) that don't see as much love as they should. The model numbers are a bit of a mess to sort out, between JDM vs exports, discontinued vs replacements, etc, but the 3-hand model (white = SARX049) can certainly be had for under $1k and you'll occasionally see the models with power reserve and date register slip under $1k, too.
I personally like better the Seiko Presage SARY 055. Same price range although I think it has been discontinued. Difference in the movement since its a 4R instead of a 6R but it comes with day and date complications.
I own the Orient Star World Timer blue dial and it's a stunning watch. First time I've seen a Watchtuber mention it. I guess it's flown under the radar.
I’m bit confused. It seems like Seiko uses the 6R15 movement a lot. From mid price 350 to higher price 900. From movement wise, is there any difference between the mid price 6R15 and high price 6R15 ? Maybe better decorations, is it regulated or tighter tolerance ?
Nice ,as always. Alpinist is not over rated,in my opinion, the watch is unique and have a history background. And if I may say you have full Harry Potter look now (with that mark). No hard feelings, keep good work.
The Casio Oceanus is hand down the best on the list i never take mines off. the fit and finish is 2nd to none i feel like I am wearing a $1500 HAQ watch for $400 got mines for $360 used just amazing
Thank you for a great list of watches under $1000 for people to consider. There is no reason anyone should buy a DW after watching this video - very well done :)
The Alpinist is overrated as hell. Calling it a future classic is overkill. The design and looks are completely subjective and it has polarised the community.
I wish the Seiko SBDC line made smaller sizes. The designs are the coolest, but 44mm is way out of my range. Great video, you covered a lot of ground!!
Two other Casio I am suggesting is the casio protect and the casio g shock divers that I believe was the first digital water resistance certified watch and includes a depth gauge. Nice choice.of watches
First real watch I’ve bought was this year and it was the Seiko Alpinist. I believe it is overrated. It’s a pretty watch but a tad bit small. I like that it has a compass I will only ever use for sh*ts and giggles and that it’s fairly rugged while nice looking enough for a dress. I’m interested in either the triton or the orient star diver with power reserve.
How come I never see Teddy or anyone else mention the Orient Sun and Moon watches? I have one and it is amazing and beautiful to look at. would love to see this watch mentioned in a future video.
Why did they put hardlex on these Seiko cocktails though? These are gorgeous watches, but in the end I went for Seiko presage SRPC79J1 instead. Just bought it a few days ago and I'm loving it!
Hi Teddy. Awesome videos...love the channel. An idea for the next one. The cheapest rattrapante chronograph? Well "cheapest"... I don't think any of them would be inexpensive but I think it would make for a cool video.
Teddy, never thought Casio had an elegant watch like Oceanus!!! And thank u, Teddy!!! I have decided to present myself with Orient Bambino or Mako II, which I would have never thought of had it not been for ur suggestions.... Nice video once again!!! (P.S- I am just starting to collect watches. U r an inspiration!!!)
I’m really considering an orient star but the logo seems less nice than the orient... the only real advantage seems to be they almost all have the power reserve indicator.
I'm surprised you only listed one Citizen watch, they have an incredible line of watches and they really don't get the credit they deserve from the TH-cam watch community. It's a shame, I own several Citizens and IMO they're of a higher quality than the Seiko's of a similar price range.
Same here, the topic said Japanese watches, but don't mention much of Citizen and Casio two bigger, and more popular than Orient watches maker on the list, while they also are "Japanese" watches .
@@bladeqmaster I hear you. I do understand the "emotional" draw to an automatic watch, but if we're being honest, almost all of the entry level automatic watch movements are mass produced by machines, not by highly talented craftsman. The same obviously also goes for Quartz movements, but my point in saying that is Citizen makes a ton of watches with equally impressive engineering, such as their GPS solar watches, perpetual calendar watches, altitude/depth sensing watches etc. There is a lot of manufacturing and engineering prowess in the Solar quartz world that deserves some recognition as well. And generally, a solar quartz watch is the most practical watch possible. Never needs a battery and is always accurate, especially on their GPS/radio controlled models. There is a place for automatic watches, and I love them too, but I just wish Citizen got some love with watch enthusiasts as well.
Sorry, SARX is too expensive for a 6r15 Watch. I remember the SARB and SARG lines had same movement and were $350 ish. Seiko had done some weird stuff in the last year canceling some great watches. I thought the Sarb 033 was canceled??
Love that SARX33 will be trading up from the SARB for that one. Congratulations on the very bold decision to be a full time You Tuber Teddy. Hope everything works out 😁
Specs wise I agree! I think that’s my problem with it. So much good value, just wish I could pull it off on more occasions. I struggled to while owning.

And why a lot of women are above 183 cm tall nowadays?! People are getting bigger and bigger, ask evolution how's that ?
61gs
I enjoy the somewhat longer videos (like this). Not as rushed, more details. 😃
Thank you for a great list of watches under $1000 for people to consider. There is no reason anyone should buy a DW after watching this video - very well done :)
The Alpinist is a future classic for sure. Change the strap and you have the quintessential watch for Fall.
Can’t deny that, such a good watch for the fall.
Am I missing something here? I love Seiko but the alpinist is the most overrated ugliest abomination that they have ever created.
The Alpinist is overrated as hell. Calling it a future classic is overkill. The design and looks are completely subjective and it has polarised the community.
@@richiechou1605 Design and looks are subjective for everything and history will be the judge.
All killer no filler. Great video.
I wish the Seiko SBDC line made smaller sizes. The designs are the coolest, but 44mm is way out of my range. Great video, you covered a lot of ground!!
That Oceanus is 🔥
Two other Casio I am suggesting is the casio protect and the casio g shock divers that I believe was the first digital water resistance certified watch and includes a depth gauge.
I have one and it is amazing and beautiful to look at. would love to see this watch mentioned in a future video.
amen to that. Orient Sun and Moon deserves more love and attention!!
Why did they put hardlex on these Seiko cocktails though? These are gorgeous watches, but in the end I went for Seiko presage SRPC79J1 instead. Just bought it a few days ago and I'm loving it!
Love your videos! Thanks for all the hard work that goes into them!
I don't wear a dress don't need a dress watch. Not a diver either, so nix that. Have a SARZ005, any opinions on that one?
I’m really considering an orient star but the logo seems less nice than the orient... the only real advantage seems to be they almost all have the power reserve indicator.
I love this video ! You makes the best choices ever !!!!
Seiko SARD006 is almost perfect for my collection, if there would be applied logo and if week would start on Monday and not on Sunday. Good vid.
A very thorough review. Appreciate this very much. You gain a subscriber 😁👍
I'm surprised you only listed one Citizen watch, they have an incredible line of watches and they really don't get the credit they deserve from the TH-cam watch community. It's a shame, I own several Citizens and IMO they're of a higher quality than the Seiko's of a similar price range.
Same here, the topic said Japanese watches, but don't mention much of Citizen and Casio two bigger, and more popular than Orient watches maker on the list, while they also are "Japanese" watches .
yeah, i'm in the middle of curating my Citizen collection and im in love with their selection so far and im only in the $300-$400 range right now.
This is late but still i want to mention that good citizen watch are mostly quartz. And Mr Teddy is not a fan of quartz.
Amazon had a quick sale Dec 2018 I got a brand new sarb017 for 365$
that's a long and well thought out list, bravo!
Never noticed how good the Orient watches look. Thanks for showing.
I don't see a lot of mention about the Orient Explorer. At around $500, it is a lot of watch for the money.
Sorry, SARX is too expensive for a 6r15 Watch. I remember the SARB and SARG lines had same movement and were $350 ish. Seiko had done some weird stuff in the last year canceling some great watches. I thought the Sarb 033 was canceled??
Orient Saturation Diver you can find new for under a thousand, one of my favorite divers.
Good vid Teddy. Love the Seiko Sard choice
Love that SARX33 will be trading up from the SARB for that one. Congratulations on the very bold decision to be a full time You Tuber Teddy. Hope everything works out 😁
Good mix,Teddy. Thanks for sharing. Best wishes from Adrian in Sheffield England 😀
Nailed it Teddy ~ Very informative. Great job my friend 👍🏼
Thank you my friend :)
great stuff Teddy!! For a new watch guy you give some great info.
Alpinist 100% legit, punches far above its weight
Specs wise I agree! I think that’s my problem with it. So much good value, just wish I could pull it off on more occasions. I struggled to while owning.
except for the fact that it's really ugly.
@@tyngshen28 that's your opinion, luckily mine differs.
It’s gorgeous. I get that the look isn’t for everyone but I adore it.
@@LostInIce4 its not an opinion., its objectively ugly in every way.
This video reveals exactly where Seiko's future focus is; mid to high end watches.
Can anyone tell me where i can find a strap like the one on the sarx055 at 11:33 please?
Killing it CLE - keep it up
Nicely done, Teddy!
I miss the Seiko SARX Enamel watches. Maybe too many Seikos! Definitely a tough list to do. There are very good Japanese watches out there.
So...no king seikos? That's the real pre-grand seiko right there.
Can those seiko cocktail watches be modded to switch out the hardlex for a sapphire crystal?
Hi Teddy what’s the brand of your eye glass?? I like it.
The seiko presage is my fav and even more the brown edition with open heart
Agree. The Alpinist is too busy for me but I understand the appeal. Seiko “pro specs”😊
