    You got me saying “Echeveria” like you (I live in the United States). People get confused and then assume that I’m the one who is pronouncing it correctly and therefore a succulent expert. Thanks Liz! 😜

    • @GrowingSucculentswithLizK
      @GrowingSucculentswithLizK  3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Yaaayyyyy!!! Don't even know who the first person to pronounce it as ekeveria. Maybe ask people with the surname Echeveria or Echeverria how their names are pronounced.
      Echeveria is named after the 18th century Mexican painter and botanical illustrator Anastasio Echeverria y Godoy.
      Now we just have to reform people who say kaluhnchowe instead of Kalanko-e(Kalanchoe).

      @@GrowingSucculentswithLizK Atanasio Echeverría y Godoy. It´s a name from the basque country and it was Etxeberria, Euskera language was never latinized , so even when taxonomy is in latin noone knows how latins could pronounce it. In euskera is a Ch sound , like in Charm, so stop saying ekeveria, it makes me mad. Love you LizK, you´re so funny and instructive. I love Pedro too!

    Oh my goodness they look delicious! I actually only have one single leaf propagation of a superbum growing right now! I got one leaf somewhere I don't even remember and watching you I started marking my leaves with a Sharpie marker and I'm so glad I put SB on this leaf because it's still so very tiny it looks like a lavender Pebbles because it's so fat LOL if I didn't have it marked I would think it was one of my lavender Pebbles LOL I can't wait for it to grow bigger. My one little tiny leaf propagation LOL I'm such a sucker for propagation.
    I broke down and bought a Debbie and it is flowering right now so I'm probably going to dust it with some diatomaceous earth.
    Watching this video makes me want to buy a bunch of the super bum 😊

    • @GrowingSucculentswithLizK
      @GrowingSucculentswithLizK  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      They grow fast. Even with that one leaf you have, once it has 6 leaves, remove the bottom and if grown under your grow light, it will germinate within a couple of weeks. You keep doing that after a few weeks...by next year, you'll have at least a dozen or more.

  • @meganwoehl5277

    Just picked my first one up from the plant store today! I went in to get some potting mix for a money tree I'm trying to bring back to life (got succulent mix because the tree needs fast draining soil and the old soil would retain moisture for months). Saw this cute little succulent and couldn't resist. It wasn't labeled so I had to search around on the internet but it's definitely a Superbum. I have two Echeveria that I saved from my wedding bouquet and I propagated some leaves from both. Now I have 4 little baby echeveria of my own and gave my fifth to my mom for mother's day. Can't wait to start propagating some of these once I get some leaves I want to pluck off! Only problem is I live in ND and it gets super cold here in winter so I have to keep them inside and I'm running out of room on my window sill that has good light.

      Thanks for watching Jean. RE: Australian have more beautiful collections.
      I don't think so. Been online on a few US sites and they have some spectacular varieties that we don't even see here in Australia. There's a lot of succulent breeders in your country and your quarantine laws seems to be a lot more flexible than ours. Also from what I've learned or seen on TH-cam, anyone from the U.S.A. can easily buy succulents from overseas sellers from Korean, China and Japan (succulent breeders) which we can't do here in OZ due to our very strict quarantine laws..

      They love the heat. Best time to get them. Grow them in shade until you have an army of them. If you get them rooted already, put in moist soil(not wet) and only water when the soil completely dries up. Then you can water them again. The leaves grow super fast as well when there's high humidity provided you just lay them on top of coco peat or tissue to germinate and root.

    • @GrowingSucculentswithLizK

      Graptoveria Purple Delight and Graptoveria Crystal are one and the same plant and they change color depending on the temperature. More purple and more green and more blotchy with fatter leaves.
      Superbum is completely different since it has a flat face, thinner leaves compared to Purple delight and stays pink all the time except when grown in shadier or less lit areas then they go green.

      Depends on the season where you live. Here in Australia, they're starting to slow down coming on to Winter. They grow fastest in Spring and Summer. If you have an indoor grow light or somewhere you can keep them warm with direct sunlight, you might be able to coaxed it to grow faster. NOTE: Slowly introduce it to direct sunlight to prevent burning.

    What’s is the different between gratopetalum pentandrum and gratopetalum superbum ? Thank you!

    • @GrowingSucculentswithLizK
      @GrowingSucculentswithLizK  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Graptopetalum pentandrum is a species of Graptopetalum. For example, Graptopetalum amethystinum, Graptopetalum paraguayense, etc. Graptopetalum superbum is a sub-species of pentandrum. The name should be listed as Graptopetalum pentandrum ssp.(sub-species) Superbum. The names too long so it's now shortened to Graptopetalum Superbum.

    Liz, would you say that mealy bugs don’t like succulents with farina in general?

    • @GrowingSucculentswithLizK
      @GrowingSucculentswithLizK  ปีที่แล้ว

      Mealybugs likes weak plants with or w/o farina. If the plant is stressed and lack circulation, they're bound to get mealybug on them but in saying that, there are also plants/succulents that doesn't get mealybug at all.

    Do you drill holes in your big rectangle plastic containers? You show us the baby incubators but don't discuss them. Love your superbums!! 🥰🤩 thank you for educating us. Mine don't grow that big. I seem to always get sick ones I first have to nurse back to health. But they never turn into that! I call it "succulent recue" from these big box stores that kill them. I can't let them die by drowning. Lol
    When will I learn to start with good stock!! 😭

      The rectangular pots all have holes. They are not incubators but direct planters. These superbum in the rectangular pots have my INTERMEDIATE Succulent Soil Mix.

    • @GrowingSucculentswithLizK
      @GrowingSucculentswithLizK  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unfortunately, there is no simple soil mix to use for all succulents. Different succulents need different soil mix. Planting succulents in different type of pots requires different soil mix. Planting succulents in the ground needs different soil mix. Where you live, the weather and the location of your garden also need different soil mix. Below this video in the description box are the different type of soil mix I use. You can also make your own similar to what I make. Cheers

    • @GrowingSucculentswithLizK
      @GrowingSucculentswithLizK  ปีที่แล้ว

      Not a diva at all. It can even grow in a premium potting mix with added perlite or pumice. It's a summer grower and goes dormant in winter and also not frost hardy.

    Hi Liz, I see sometimes you say your plants are only 18 months oild from a leaf or whatever. With my leaf propagation they shoot at first but then they all seem to look like the same variety even though they aren't and they never seem to get very big... they just stay that size.. I think they need more sun, but in my yard and the way things are sorted I don't know where I can put them and also I don't want to give them too much sun all at once and have them burn. :( I wish you could see what I mean and give advice especially for me LOL. I know I will work it out - Somehow. xox

    • @GrowingSucculentswithLizK

      I always say to pluck and throw method. Where they we're plucked from and grown with roots, is also where you should place them in a pot near the area and they need to be watered everyday or kept moist. I prefer to put master soil mix in the pot and top it up with coco peat for the rooted seedling so I can bury the roots in the cocopeat without them getting wet feet as coco peat dries up really quick...OMG I'm writing a novel...LOL I think I better do a video on this to better explain.

    • @HoneyBee-ge2wx

      @@GrowingSucculentswithLizK Hehe thank you for your response.. Mine have got past the leaf stage. They naturally came away from the mother leaf. but haven't grown since... and honestly it's been months... The stems are long which makes me say i reckon they need sun. My succulents are 90% in the ground. So when I get leaves should I pluck and leave them in the garden? What I usually do is collect them so I can give them that extra attention - watering etc. I put them in trays with basically your master soil mix and I also use the coco peat per your instruction :) Now that it is cooling off maybe I can transfer them slowly to more sun and see how they go.
      I also wrote a book lol

    I had no idea plants consumed soil

    • @GrowingSucculentswithLizK
      @GrowingSucculentswithLizK  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      They don't consume soil. The soil is the source of minerals like Nitrogen, magnesium, phosphorus, etc. As the soil decomposes, these minerals are released into the soil.
      Succulents use the energy from the sun, or other light and use it to make their food. The ingredients for this process are water (minerals in the soil), carbon dioxide, and light.
      As the plant grows, the soil decomposes and release minerals which are absorbed into the plants. This is why the soil shrinks.
