This is probably the greatest opera ever written. I will be at the met opera on 10/17/21 I was drawn toward this opera by my grandfather and mother and uncle. He grandfather used to sing excerpts at bed time, At Music and Art HS in NYC graduated 1961 George Seaman a cellist turned me on to Russian opera .The tenderness and psychological drama--- The Russian church modes - the inventive orchestration all make this opera a miracle. Mussorgsky was some kind of an unschooled genius who tapped into a genre that emerged in the mid 19th century.
I saw the performance on 10/17 Sunday. The anticipation after so many years was overwhelming. It was exactly as they said. It was the 1869 version seven scenes about 2 hrs 10 min. The choral parts were great. Some soloists were a little weak. The costumes were fabulous but the scenery was sparse. The Holy fool scene at St Basil's always is so moving. I heard music never performed. This was the original. The opening of the apartment scene used modern (for that time) tonalities. There was a section just before the coronation that brings back the opening theme heard at the very beginning.
I was astounded when I listened again the Gergiev TH-cam video of the 1869 version. From 1-02-40 for about three minutes there is a very modern sound. The scale is almost pure whole tone. The orchestration in spots is Debussy-like. Most noticeable was that this is music new to our ears.. A lot of 1869 was taken for later versions but not this one.
^ Oh, most definitely. Since discovering the opera in 2009, it has become one of my favorite operas and pieces of music to date. There are things I like and dislike in both Rimsky-Korsakov's revision and Mussorgsky's original version(s) but in general, it is a proud and weighty nationalistic work full of spirit.
See my comments above. Just to add. I have been listening and going to Boris performances since1959. The 1869 version with Gergiev is on you tube. That is what the Met is doing this year. Changes I noticed: 1) there is never heard music between the first scene and Coronation 2) Never heard music also in the Tsar's apartment at the opening. 3) Forest at Kromy and both Polish scenes are omitted. I am psyched about attending Since last time they did this opera was 2010. In former years it was done more often. Rimsky Korsakov was responsible for establishing it as a staple in the repertoire. Hope to hear from you. No one I know cares an iota bout this opera.
There have been so many versions of this it's pointless to favor one over the other. The music is so engaging that it stands by itself. They are all good. The George London recording didn't have the St Basil scene. When I heard that at the met opera on 41st st it was a revelation. Also if you listen carefully you hear different chords and different orchestrations.
For me this is the most beautiful version of Prologue of this magnificent opera, the best...

I had a friend turn me on to this opera back in the 90s..... None has ever come close to the fascination this holds for me
An absolute musical masterpiece. It deserves much - much more views and hearings.
Who else is listening to this in 2020?
Me. I have two copies of the Opera, including Mussorsky's original.

Many years ago, over 40, I enjoyed this opera at the Colón Theater of Buenos Aires: never forgotten! but I love russian composers and their music...
My love for Mussorgsky‘s music is higher than the mountain and deeper than the sea
The comfort of this piece is beyond compare
This isn't Mussorgsky's version of this it's another remake of Rimski Korsakov.

So powerful... Mussorgsky died too early. One of the best of his era

On that occasion Boris Christoff played the other Boris...
Il variante di Rimsky Korsakov toglie molto alla genialita di Mussorgsky. Per me o originale o Shostakovitch.
Potrebbe spiegarsi meglio?
