  • The most portable lightweight smallest video light kits for travel and hiking are here. When traveling, every ounce of weight counts, plus of course small compact portable size that doesn't take up much space in a suitcase or backpack. Here are my personal favorites. These kits are so small, I brought seven of them in one suitcase!

    It´s a long way from the sunny coast line of the Pacific or the arid Dune like landscapes of the South-West in the US to Scandinavia here in northern Europe,- yet here I am,- again ,- following Markus teaching me how to make my entire production package small enough to fit in my beloved Volvo wagon next to my instruments, costumes and audio kit ready to go create a music video.
    How I just love Gonzo production.
    Thank you, Markus. :)

    I've actually rigged a Sony npf adapter to the g60 for full battery control. There is a video on my channel on how I did this (MY NAB SHOWROOM FLOOR RIG - 2023). True I only get about 70% power from this rig, but it works in a pinch. I actually used it on my camera at NAB one years. So the 60's are great for travel and you can leave all that power and plug junk at home.

    I don't know how I stumble to this channel, but I am glad. For the past few days, I have been watching almost all the videos on this channel and it really uplifted my passion for photography. I love photography even though my skills is level 1. Markus is great, I am impressed with his insight, talent and intelligence about photography, filming, gear and most importantly, made me feel good to take photos with whatever camera I have. I have 2 canon cameras which I have invested in years. 2 of those were point and shoot cameras and 1 is mirrorless with a kit lens. I am a huge fan of camcorder, I had a canon camcorder (the basic ones) and I loved it. I gave it to my Dad so he can enjoy taking videos of his chickens and orchids. I am a new subscriber to this channel, more power to Markus.

    re: bed sheet
    When I need to travel ultra-light, I always pack a "TRANSLUCENT" neutral white shower curtain liner (available at Walmart, etc.). Some shower curtain liners include magnets on the one edge that I've made use of on occasion. It's gone with me to off-the-beaten areas of Central Asia and across Europe. Compact and lightweight! I find that it lets through a bit more diffused light than a bed sheet.
    ...Gaffer tape it in a window, diffuse direct sun, cover gear in sudden rain or sand, ground protection for subject sitting, sit a chair on it's side and drape over legs of chair for an instant light box, etc. etc.. So many uses and can be easily wiped clean or replaced.

    UPDATE:
    Went to Home Depot and picked a couple of those foldable shop lights to see what I could do with them. Looking at them I got to wondering… What if you could also get ahold of 24” sections of egg crate to put on them as an option? I know the shape of them is not round like the common tube lights are. But if you could get just the material and fit it yourself, that might be pretty neat. Thanks again for the inspiration Markus!

    All the Zhiyun lights run of USB power. If you don't want to take the big power bricks with you, just buy one (or however many you need) 100w GaN chargers. Modern ones are tiny, they plug right into the socket and are way lighter and less bulky

    Have you ever used those LED net-type Christmas lights for some soft lighting? Generally as supplementary lighting when there is still some natural light for it to blend in with. You can hang them in a curved way around the subject, and then you just stick the lens through one of the gaps with a lens hood if needed. You could probably even set up a rig to have a frame around your camera holding it up!
    And to make it brighter to focus on a smaller area your can simply fold it over or hang two alongside each other. They come in wall powered OR regular AA/AAA battery powered, and you can get warm or cool white light, or use one layer of each. It looks especially good with the warm white, outside around sunset, giving you this foliage-filtered soft light effect. It definitely has its uses in my opinion and is both very light and portable.
    I've learned so much from you that I figured I could at least share one of my little tricks. It doesn't work perfect for every situation, but it can look amazing in the right conditions. Happy shooting Markus!

    I don't think you can put those Zhiyun 40's, with their built in lithium batteries, in your checked bags. I wish the manufacturers would think of this when making super bright lights with built in batteries. The Zhiyun Fiveray 100 watt wand light is terrific, but it's too big for my carryon and lithium batteries attached to something that could turn on by accident and get hot in the baggage compartment is a recipe for disaster...I think that's why the FAA doesn't want lithium batteries checked in the hold. In that case, Wellmaking for the win!

  • @KenRossPhotography

    There are quite a few light weight battery packs with built-in AC power inverters that would probably power those Home Depot LED lights for quite a while. Not too big or very expensive.

    • @MarkusPix

      Yes, but I don't think they would let you put one in a suitcase, or even as a carry-on with the 99 mAh limit

    • @KenRossPhotography
      @KenRossPhotography ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MarkusPix good point. We'll just have to wait for the inevitable "Markus hack" where you take a basic 12V->120V inverter and pair it up with "normal batteries" to create a cheap on-the-go option to power the HD lights in the wild 😄

  • @stever1514
    @stever1514 ปีที่แล้ว

    thanks markus. any of these kits is cheaper than the battery to power just one of my Aputure 100X's. I gotta check out those Feit tubes and see if I can power them using the sockets that came with my background stand kit and use my power tool battery DC to AC converter.

  • @workingwiththelight3119

    Markus, are you giving Cara a break from the camera and making your Mom do the recording in the house?
    Lol, I could see a wholesale load of foamcore showing up at your Ma's house 2 days before you get there.

      Do you mean for video? Weddings are usually flash pics because they're much more powerful. You could use a couple X100's. Some people just have an assistant holding a reflector. Depends how many people you're trying to light up and if its video or pics.

      Yes for video my apologies. I'm looking to have a travel kit that's light for weddings that I decided to shoot which requires me to fly. I don't want to carry a lot of luggage when I do these short trips. I have a package deal with Frontier Airlines which requires you to pay for luggage each way. To keep cost down I want a travel kit that's efficient, and small similar to what you show in this video. The weddings will vary of course and I want to be prepared for when it gets dark I can get the job done with good quality still.

      the lightest and most powerful of the small stuff is Zhiyun X100 for video and Godox AD100 for strobes. Manfrotto carbon Nanopole is the sturdiest of the lightweight stands, but there are other stands th-cam.com/video/DsayrjO_-gk/w-d-xo.html

    Marcus, do you know the Yongnuo YN LUX200? Is it a good light?

      I don't know the 200, but I gave the 100 away. I hate that big clunky stupid handle grip that the batteries clip onto.
