    Good review. I have one as well and got it in June with the pre-order. Same as you I use it for sleep and HRV. Biggest eye openers have been: 1) How eating late affects my sleep, 2) How making up your sleep debt has a hugely positive impact on recovery, 3) How long it can take to bounce back after significant time zone travel.

    Here is an overview of what happens when you use the Oura ring, the Oura app and Oura Cloud:
    The ring collects your physiological signals, such as heart rate, body temperature deviation and movement.
    The ring syncs the data it collects to the Oura app. Your data is connected to the Oura account you have created when taking the Oura ring into use.
    The Oura app syncs your data with our servers. The Oura ring, the Oura app and Oura Cloud use the raw data gathered by the ring to guide you towards better recovery and sleep.
    There is absolutely no reason for this, we all have laptops in our pockets. I will not pay 300 bucks only to have my data monetized as well. cool technology though.

    Watch out for delivery time... you pay the lot up front, then it takes two weeks for the ring size kit to arrive from Finland. Choose the size, enter it online.... and wait ANOTHER 10-11 WEEKS for delivery. I ordered it in October and delivery looks like early January.

      Well I guess they have gotten much better with delivery time since your purchase. The website still says 4-6 weeks but it took me 2 weeks total from purchase to delivery of the ring. I also ordered the fishing kit and that is included in the total time. It came UPS from Finland to the heartland of the US in 2 days!!!

    I love my Oura ring too! So much more comfortable than smart watches/bands. Plus it tackles a more holistic and wellness approach compared to other smart devices, which is better for activity. The cycle tracking and battery life is super awesome! And another interesting thing is it detects illness before you feel anything. Also, it was very accurate when it comes on tracking my sleep. You can actually protect its beauty without sacrificing biometrics and comfort with an OSleeve.

    Thanks for the review. You talked about charging it for a few minutes each day. Their website recommends charging it to full every 6-7 days as the non-replaceable battery is only good for about 500 charges. How's your battery holding up? Too soon to tell?

    Heart rate variability can't be measured accurately over night like the Oura ring does. It needs to be measured seated, every morning under the same conditions with an accurate monitor. The Morpheus M5 strap uses the only clinical validated monitor to measure HRV for consumer purposes. Also from a recovery standpoint, most wearables measuring HRV, show a sudden high increase in HRV as good, resulting in a better recovery score, which is not the case. When HRV suddenly rises, the parasympathetic branch (also known as the 'rest and digest' system) of the autonomic nervous system gets dominant meaning the body is trying to recover from any mental and/or physical stress. So adding too much training load may result in a low HRV score because the body wasn't fully recovered and shifts back to the sympathetic branch (the 'fight or flight' system) due to additional stressors. A higher training load would be appropriate again when the HRV score returns to basline (which is the average HRV score of a certain period).

    Be careful if you're buying this to use with Hauwei Mate 20 Pro. They have bluetooth connectivity issues and Oura are useless at customer service as they appear to have about 2 people working there.
    EDIT: Don't buy one of these is you're using an Android phone. Just look at the feedback for their app on Google Play. Tons of negative feedback from users unable to connect the ring to their phone.

    I'd say battery life isn't dependable on how quick you recharge it. It's not as if it's more durable when you charge it from 95% to 100% every day as opposed from 10%-100% every 7 days...

    Very well covered review, Tom.
    Is there a feature in the app that can allow to ring a wake up alarm at a time when I am well recovered... to explain this , for example I have slept well for 6 hrs...after that I'm just lying in bed with light sleep, but I really can't decide whether or not should I wake up or sleep a little more to recover better....Here, if Oura can help to ring phone alarm suggesting that I have got adequate sleep and sleeping more than that is not helping me actually... Also, can it do the same after a small power nap..
    So practically, I should be able to preset ..ie after a particular sleep cycles, the alarm should ring.
    Also if I want to set an alarm for example immediately after say 2nd REM cycle...I should be able to set that alarm..
    Waking up at the right time is as important as having a good sleep!!

      Uh. You are thinking like a pacemaker? Doesn't work that way or a least the tech is not there. Since to jump the heart you need enough jolts at the heart area as why you see those implant pacemaker is installed. If it works on the idea as you noted, then no one will install a pacemaker near their heart. However it's a great concept, but not sure there is sufficient electrical pulse to do what you describe or even able to send such pulse from your finger to control your heart beat.

    Hey Tom, I've already got an Apple Watch 3 and plan on getting the 4 in the next year or two but I may put that money into this instead. My biggest worries are, I saw on their online ad they suggest taking the ring off to lift heavy stuff - and I lift weights 4-5x/week. The Apple Watch is perfect for this, but sometimes I wonder just how accurate the heart rate monitor is as well as my sleep monitors/applications. My other big concern would be just how accurate it is at night during sleep time - I would assume this is where the device would really shine for me compared to the Apple Watch because I do have epilepsy and need a LOT of restorative sleep... and sometimes I have night seizures and thrash around and bang up the Apple Watch, which I'd love to take off at night if I didn't need to track sleep.
    So yeah, do you think the ring would be decent for 1) lifting weights / workout reports compared to an Apple Watch and 2) how it would compare to the Apple Watch for sleep tracking. If anyone else knows as well, please do help me out with some advice/suggestions - I'd really appreciate peer feedback!
    Great video man, thanks for having such a chill attitude about not getting anything extra for doing this commercial and yet still pursuing a discount ad for your viewers. Very kind and generous spirit, I wish nothing but success for you.

    How is the ring's durability, especially when you're gripping those gymnastics rings? I do a lot of weight training, so I recognized those callouses on your hands right away. I'm concerned about spending the money on this, only to damage the inner electronics during my normal workouts.

  • @jeffzaun1841
    @jeffzaun1841 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    You should emphasize that the ring is useless as a fitness tracker. You can't view your current heart rate or review your heart rate during workout. It is great at monitoring sleep, but that's pretty much all it does. It will show periods in the day when you are active, but it's just a bar rising from Low, to Medium to High. You still need an strap or watch for workouts and daytime activity.

      If it’s within your budget i would say its not overkill. As a beginner i assume you don’t know your body cues for when you pushed to hard or not enough and this should help with that. More importantly is the sleep knowledge. Sleep is usually the first thing people will sacrifice when life gets tuff which is usually a bad plan because you rob your future self. I have also bought one and even tough it is a cool gadget that provide you with some nice insights about sleep quality and daily activity measurements what i feel is that we naturally feel the cues without the need to spend that amount of money in this sort of gadget. Don't get me wrong, i really like my oura ring 2 but when i wake up feeling tired i already know that i haven't had a good sleep. It is kinda obvious. When i workout and keep active during the whole day i know that my activity goals are reached. So for me it is more like a motivation little gadget since it reinforces my good "behaviour" and keeps me wanting to get better sleep and activity to keep improving my readiness scores.

    Did you know Prince Harry wears an Oura Ring? This is basically an upgraded version of Motiv Ring. If Motiv Ring adds features the Oura Ring already has and is able to match its accuracy the Oura Ring is toast because Motiv Ring is cheaper and has better distribution. I would find it OK to sleep with a smart watch on and also during the day you can use your hands and fingers better than having a ring on it. It is also a matter of cost.

    Nice video. I wasn’t aware of this product. One question, I own a new Series 4  Watch and it does HRV, or at least my  Health app has an HRV section that always has data. Is there some reason why you don’t wear an  Watch? Thanks

      Thomas Alan I did not know that. To be honest I’m not a big Apple Watch fan, I try to avoid notifications most the time. But if it does it then that is awesome 👍

    I found wrist strap wearables very inaccurate compared to chest strap. Tom could you check your hr and the ring st the same time to see if it’s accurate?

    • @deadlypalms
      @deadlypalms 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I had the same question. Def worth wearing both at the same time, comparing the difference to see if it's significant (via csv export etc).

    • @rclewis01
      @rclewis01 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thibautnoah2599 I know that a ring is snug on the finger and it really doesn't move that much. A watch, on the other hand, moves quite a bit. If your watch is tight enough to get good consistent readings, then it is just uncomfortable and you can't even bend your wrist. Is that just me? not sure.

    Quite a few interesting studies relating HRV to emotional states/stress - did you notice anything in the data relating to this during your tracking? Be interesting to note how this might change depending upon exercise frequency, type of exercise (or meditation etc), time of day etc.

    • @BodyweightWarrior
      @BodyweightWarrior  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      deadlypalms yes it does. Sadly my dog died a few weeks ago but weirdly that night I had like 40% REM sleep which is double usual and a high HRV. I do meditation daily so didn’t notice

    This ring is made out of plastic and can crack if worn while working out. Customer service is none exists to, those promoting the ring are private investors like Asprey, Greenfield. You cannot return the ring without an authorization number from them and only have 30 days to return. Been requesting authorization for two weeks only receive e-mails stating they are to busy, yep not to busy to take the money, but definitely to busy to return it, I purchased the gold. I at least thought the ring would have some metal for a 400.00 total. Just plastic. I’ve found other reviews with same complaint.

    Is it as accurate as as the polar chest strap? Did you compare them? For example, fitbit is just horrible, it picks intensity after even a minute, if this ring does the same is just a waste of time

      B A i myself use Whoop and i have no problem sleeping with it. After a few days you dont even notice it anymore. The sensors of the Whoop are naturally larger than in the Oura ring and i wouldn’t be surprised if the results of the Whoop are more accurate.

    • @schlegel98
      @schlegel98 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kayla de Beer i actually do! As far as i know it‘s the only device specifically aimed at athletes. It is really accurate in tracking heart rate, sleep and is giving you useful recovery scores. Only downside is probably that it‘s rather pricey and i miss a larger band to attach it to my upper arm rather than my wrist. Also with swimming i found that the band is not always staying in place where it should, but maybe with another strap it is different, i haven‘t tested this out enough. Overall for my purposes i would buy it again!
