You left out the most important part and that's that Tarantino completely ripped off the 1987 Hong Kong crime thriller "City On Fire" directed by Ringo Lam which starred Chow Yun Fat and Danny Lee to make Reservoir Dogs. Tarantino stole the entire plot from "City On Fire" and based most of the events in Reservoir Dogs around the last 1/3 of "City On Fire."

Before Pulp Fiction was released, the story that was out there, was: Mr. Pink survived (you can hear him surrendering in the background), but did NOT have the diamonds on his person - they were still where he hid them. That, and the fact that John Travolta's character & Michael Madson's character are supposed to be brothers - and the opening scenes with Travolta and Jackson, it was originally thought that pulp Fiction was a sequel. It ended up not being a sequel per se, but a follow-up.
Hey Marijke, I love how this movie could have been a play. ----- It mostly takes place in a single room and it's really 90% conversation between 2 or 3 characters. ------ It puts the dialogue at the Forefront and the dialogue is Simply Amazing. Kudos to Mr Tarantino. The stuff of legends.
My favorite part is that it's has a lot in common with cop movies from the 70's. Pacing, dialogue, use of music. But, it's definitely got a modern twist.
Same here - as a tie with Pulp Fiction and True Romance (as a writer). Tarantino didn't have a single bad movie IMO, but his earlier works are just that bit better. He always took inspiration from the many movies he loved, but his early work was more original. He toke inspirations, but made something new and unique out of it. The script writing, the dialogues (esp. the random topics stuff, that gives the characters so much depth and believability), the way how he tells the story with the flashbacks and the "out of order"-editing. IMO he lost some of that "magic" after Kill Bill. Kill Bill was the ultimate node to several movie genres, mixed in a wild "medley". After that, it became more of a "remake in Tarantino style" thing.
I just love that in this story we go to a flashback story of someone learning a story and then we see him telling this story and then we go into the story where we find someone telling a story. I bet Tarantino had a big grin on his face when he came up with this sequence.
Two carry throughs to other films are: 1) Vic Vega (the crazy torturer) is supposed to be the brother of Vincent Vega -- in Pulp Fiction. 2) The parole officer mentioned "Scagneti" is seen in a film written by Tarantino: Natural Born Killers (played by Tom Sizemore).
Actually, Mary, although I hate to be the bearer of bad news, Mr. Pink didn't survive the movie. After he leaves the warehouse, we can hear several gunshots and shouting, suggesting that he was gunned down by the cops. That said, this was a great reaction to a great film!

What an amazing cast and what a great movie. For me this one and Pulp Fiction go together perfectly I can't watch one without thinking of the other one. And of course -it goes without saying- I loved your reaction too...
This movie was cutting edge 30 years ago. It was a breath of fresh air compared to the films of that era. Soon afterwards several other movies tried to follow in that story telling vein. Regarding directors showing up as actors in their own films John Favreau is another indie film guy that was comfortable on both sides of the camera.
Stuck in the Middle with You is just a song by Scottish band Stealers Wheel, and is much older than all the shows and films that have used it. It's from 1973. It has a music video -- surprising for 1973 -- that is on youtube.

Something I’ve seen pointed out a few times is that Mr orange immediately gives himself away as a rat in the diner when he snitches on Mr pink for not tipping.
Since you're a fan of the crime genre, I strongly recommend Michael Mann's 'Thief', starring James Caan. Amazing performances, great score, beautifully shot, first rate crime drama.

I remember that this came out at around the same time as another violent film. This was called “Man Bites Dog” in the UK, but I believe the original Belgian title was “C’est arrive pres de chez vous”. The newspapers were creating a lot of fuss over both these films.
A bit of movie for shadowing: in the bathroom scene you can see the pink and white bottles (Mr. Pink n Mr. White) are visually separated from the orange ones. Of course Mr. Orange was the "rat".

Mr. Pink died too when he went outside. The cops got him. You can hear it in the background noise outside when Freddie told Larry he was a cop, but you have to listen closely.

That goofy scream in the background is the "wilhelm scream". It's a famous sound effect. I think it was originally used as a serious sound effect but directors thought it was funny so they started putting it in their movies as an inside joke and an easter egg. Any time you hear it you should assume it is the director using it as a joke/easter egg for anyone that knows what the "wilhelm scream" is.
Its impossible to overstate how influential this movie was in the early 90s. It basically created its own little sub-genre of hyper cool gangster/heist movies less interested in action and more in having an articulate screenplay.

Yes! Finally somebody reacts to this movie instead of just the more well known Tarantino movies. Pulp Fiction was what put Tarantino on the map with general audiences, but when serious film fans saw Reservoir Dogs, they knew this guy had real talent. If you've ever wondered why such big movie stars signed on to do Pulp Fiction, it's because of this film right here. They were begging to be on his next movie.
Then maybe you should watch The Hateful Eight. Another great Tarantino film. It's got a "who done it" feel for most of the movie. Such a great western type film in my book!
Michal Madsen, who played Vic Vega (aka Mr Blonde), played Bill's brother in Kill Bill, which is probably where you recognise him from. He was also, I think, intended to be cast as Vincent Vega in Pulp Fiction, which eventually went to John Travolta, which I guess is why they made him Mr Blonde's brother in the first place and just stuck with it. If I remember correctly, I think there was some talk about making a sort of prequel movie focusing on the Vega brothers, starring both Madsen and Travolta, which came to nothing and eventually the actors became too old anyway
Mr Pink is the best character, he is the only professional through and through, he acted right he was not a psycho, he went there for a job and he was the only one who did it so he had the good ending, he got his life. And i also happen to agree with all his ideologies, including tipping, i think i would be friends with him if he was real.
Mary Mr. Pink doesn't get away at the end. If you listen to what's going on in the background, you'll hear Mr. Pink gets confronted by the cops then gunfire. So no one gets away everyone dies. Tarantino is a master at his craft of story telling and dialogue with the characters he brings to life.
Hey Marjike, the opening scene of them at breakfast establishes many things, but mainly each character is intensely passionate for whatever ideology they have come upon. ------ The other thing is Harvey Keitel is willing to go against Joe, when he won't give him his notebook. ------- Tarantino's dialogue is never there for fluff. it always takes us somewhere.------ We never understand until the movie credit roll, but it's there for a reason.

I'm also pretty sure this was the first time I'd seen Steve Buscemi and Tim Roth, both of whom rank on my Top 10 Actors List. As well, it has an amazing 70's soundtrack.
After Mr. Orange got shot again by Joe, he knew that his chances of surviving where slim so the least he could do before going out was telling Mr. White that he was a cop. Also, Mr. White was trying to stand up for Orange & trying to convince Joe not to shoot him, which is another reason why Orange felt he had to tell White. There are a couple of deleted scenes, including a close up where Mr. Blonde cut the cop's ear off, but it was cut off from the movie (no pun intended 😜) because it didn't look real & you could see that the ear wasn't real either. They couldn't have made it better because this was a lowbudget movie. And someone wrote that Mr. Pink gets killed outside, wrong, he gets arrested. If you're gonna rewatch, when Pink goes outside turn up your volume & listen, you can hear the cops showing up & say freeze, Pink says don't shoot & since you don't hear any gunshots outside, it means that Pink got arrested. Mr. Brown got shot in the head, or between the eyes.
when you re-watch it, Pink "the Professional" didnt get away.....right before the cops bust in you can hear cars and GUNSHOTS happening off-camera and outside the building. Likely Pink was gunned down, just before the undercover cop confesses to Larry.
I went to see this at the cinema and remember the hype around it and 'that' scene... It was unbelivable the tension not knowing how bad it was going to be. I came out slightly underwhelmed but I appreciate it a lot more now...
Tarantino took a lot of inspiration from John Carpenter’s The Thing for the atmosphere for Reservoir Dogs. A group of men in an isolated location not knowing who to trust.
Mr. Pink died, too. You can hear the cops showing up, shooting it out with Pink, and then they find the last 2 guys and kill Mr. White after he shoots the cop.
Despite minimal locations and being in a time prior to the high quality blood and violence you get with most later Tarantino films that everyone loves, this is my favorite movie of his. It gets more artistic every time you watch it. Pink did not make it. Unfortunately I recently realized that you actually hear the cops stop Mr.Pink, tell him to put the bag down, then you hear them open fire.
Reservoir Dogs is my favorite movie of All-Time. My favorite character was Mr. Pink. If you want another great crime film you NEED to watch True Romance. Tarantino wrote this movie, but sold the script. This though, allowed him to direct Reservoir Dogs. But True Romance is just as amazing. You'll love it.
Literally about 99% of this took place in a single room... this could easily be a Broadway stage production. Whereas this was Tarantino's first film, I always kind of wondered whether he wrote it thinking it would end up on a stage or as a low budget indie film.
A couple of things about Quentin Tarantino, his movies always start right out in the middle of the action, and he always uses great music. Also he is like Alfred Hitchcock in that he usually has at least a cameo in his movies, although a little more than a cameo in "Pulp Fiction".
You would love Jackie Brown! It's easily Tarantino's most underrated film, a wonderful, smart crime movie with lots of conversation and character development, relatively little violence, and a fantastic lead performance by Pam Grier
Mr. Pink does not get away. Listen to the background audio while Orange is confessing he is a cop. You can here the cops outside catch Pink before they come in. You were commenting over that part I think.
It's funny that for a guy who lives for movies that this script was written like, and could almost be performed as, a stage play. There's almost no cinematic conventions used at all.
Mr. Pink actually does die. While Mr. Orange is confessing to Mr. White in the end you can hear the interaction between Mr. Pink and the police. Everyone dies.
Loved Tarantino’s creative storytelling in his first outing. The biggest issue I had with this movie is the amount of external hemorrhage of Mr. Orange. I realize Tarantino did that for dramatic effect, but when you get shot in the abdomen you hemorrhage internally not externally. Also, Tim Roth (who I have admired in other roles and in the back story of this film) was a bit over the top acting wise, after his character got shot. Enjoyed your reaction! 😎👍
This is Tarantino's first movie, when he was making the film festival circuits looking for a buyer nobody wanted to buy it. The owner of Miramax approached Tarantino and said they'd buy the movie but they would have to get rid of the 'ear scene' because woman wouldn't want to see that and they make up half the audience. Tarantino said it was his movie and he is keeping that scene in. Miramax agreed to keep it in the movie but told Tarantino to remember what they are letting him do. Anyways, I think the first half of Tarantino's film catalog was distributed by Miramax so Tarantino made them quite a bit of money.
Every actor in Hollywood was trying to get a part in this movie. This was Quentin Tarantino‘s first movie. Everyone loved the screenplay. They knew it was a hit.
I'm so glad you loved this one as it's my favorite Q.T. movie! He has a lot of good ones though. Based on your enjoyment of this (and a few others) I really think you would enjoy a movie called Fallen with Denzel Washington and John Goodman. Those were the times when Tarantino made movies where you could still speculate on the quantity of blood would do what. These days he doesn't start with anything less than more blood spilled than a body can actually contain.
Watching this movie. You do not realize it, but you can tell who every character is by watching the breakfast scene. Little bit about U.S. hospitals. If you come in as a patient with a gun shot wound. The police will be called. After surgery you may or may not be handcuffed to a hospital bed. When the doctor says you can be interviewed, then you will be interviewed by the police.

I saw it as a play. It was in a small theater in Chicago. The gun fire was so damn loud. The theater probably held 200 people.

Yes! Finally somebody reacts to this movie instead of just the more well known Tarantino movies. Pulp Fiction was what put Tarantino on the map with general audiences, but when serious film fans saw Reservoir Dogs, they knew this guy had real talent. If you've ever wondered why such big movie stars signed on to do Pulp Fiction, it's because of this film right here. They were begging to be on his next movie.
Then maybe you should watch The Hateful Eight. Another great Tarantino film. It's got a "who done it" feel for most of the movie. Such a great western type film in my book!

Michal Madsen, who played Vic Vega (aka Mr Blonde), played Bill's brother in Kill Bill, which is probably where you recognise him from. He was also, I think, intended to be cast as Vincent Vega in Pulp Fiction, which eventually went to John Travolta, which I guess is why they made him Mr Blonde's brother in the first place and just stuck with it. If I remember correctly, I think there was some talk about making a sort of prequel movie focusing on the Vega brothers, starring both Madsen and Travolta, which came to nothing and eventually the actors became too old anyway
Michael Madsen and Harvey Keitel were also in Thelma and Louise together
Tarantino was a straight up genius from day one. A masterpiece in storytelling, directing and editing.
The "Twelve Angry Men" style of filmmaking, love it!
Mr Pink is the best character, he is the only professional through and through, he acted right he was not a psycho, he went there for a job and he was the only one who did it so he had the good ending, he got his life.
And i also happen to agree with all his ideologies, including tipping, i think i would be friends with him if he was real.
Mary Mr. Pink doesn't get away at the end. If you listen to what's going on in the background, you'll hear Mr. Pink gets confronted by the cops then gunfire. So no one gets away everyone dies. Tarantino is a master at his craft of story telling and dialogue with the characters he brings to life.
Mr. Pink died too. When he leaves, you can hear the police yelling at him to give up, then gunshots.
Hey Marjike, the opening scene of them at breakfast establishes many things, but mainly each character is intensely passionate for whatever ideology they have come upon. ------ The other thing is Harvey Keitel is willing to go against Joe, when he won't give him his notebook. ------- Tarantino's dialogue is never there for fluff. it always takes us somewhere.------ We never understand until the movie credit roll, but it's there for a reason.

This has been one of my favourite movies for thirty years and combined with Pulp Fiction made Quentin Tarantino on of my all-time favourite filmmakers.
I'm also pretty sure this was the first time I'd seen Steve Buscemi and Tim Roth, both of whom rank on my Top 10 Actors List. As well, it has an amazing 70's soundtrack.
After Mr. Orange got shot again by Joe, he knew that his chances of surviving where slim so the least he could do before going out was telling Mr. White that he was a cop. Also, Mr. White was trying to stand up for Orange & trying to convince Joe not to shoot him, which is another reason why Orange felt he had to tell White.
There are a couple of deleted scenes, including a close up where Mr. Blonde cut the cop's ear off, but it was cut off from the movie (no pun intended 😜) because it didn't look real & you could see that the ear wasn't real either. They couldn't have made it better because this was a lowbudget movie.
And someone wrote that Mr. Pink gets killed outside, wrong, he gets arrested. If you're gonna rewatch, when Pink goes outside turn up your volume & listen, you can hear the cops showing up & say freeze, Pink says don't shoot & since you don't hear any gunshots outside, it means that Pink got arrested.
Mr. Brown got shot in the head, or between the eyes.
when you re-watch it, Pink "the Professional" didnt get away.....right before the cops bust in you can hear cars and GUNSHOTS happening off-camera and outside the building. Likely Pink was gunned down, just before the undercover cop confesses to Larry.
You can hear them kill Mr. Pink outside when he refuses to drop his gun.

I went to see this at the cinema and remember the hype around it and 'that' scene... It was unbelivable the tension not knowing how bad it was going to be. I came out slightly underwhelmed but I appreciate it a lot more now...

Tarantino took a lot of inspiration from John Carpenter’s The Thing for the atmosphere for Reservoir Dogs. A group of men in an isolated location not knowing who to trust.
Mr. Pink died, too. You can hear the cops showing up, shooting it out with Pink, and then they find the last 2 guys and kill Mr. White after he shoots the cop.
Despite minimal locations and being in a time prior to the high quality blood and violence you get with most later Tarantino films that everyone loves, this is my favorite movie of his. It gets more artistic every time you watch it.
Pink did not make it. Unfortunately I recently realized that you actually hear the cops stop Mr.Pink, tell him to put the bag down, then you hear them open fire.

Reservoir Dogs is my favorite movie of All-Time. My favorite character was Mr. Pink. If you want another great crime film you NEED to watch True Romance. Tarantino wrote this movie, but sold the script. This though, allowed him to direct Reservoir Dogs. But True Romance is just as amazing. You'll love it.

Well, this was Quinten Tarantino's first movie. And he came out the gate shooting. Literally.
Literally about 99% of this took place in a single room... this could easily be a Broadway stage production. Whereas this was Tarantino's first film, I always kind of wondered whether he wrote it thinking it would end up on a stage or as a low budget indie film.
Totally agree. Always thought it would be a great play.
He originally was going to film it on a 30k budget before it got noticed and raised 1.5mil funding.

Except for Kill Bill, it's helpful to think of Tarantino movies more like watching a live play.
A couple of things about Quentin Tarantino, his movies always start right out in the middle of the action, and he always uses great music. Also he is like Alfred Hitchcock in that he usually has at least a cameo in his movies, although a little more than a cameo in "Pulp Fiction".
You would love Jackie Brown! It's easily Tarantino's most underrated film, a wonderful, smart crime movie with lots of conversation and character development, relatively little violence, and a fantastic lead performance by Pam Grier
Mr. Pink does not get away. Listen to the background audio while Orange is confessing he is a cop. You can here the cops outside catch Pink before they come in. You were commenting over that part I think.
Another movie that Tarantino had a hand in that I think you would enjoy is Four Rooms. It also stars Tom Roth/Mr. Pink.

It's funny that for a guy who lives for movies that this script was written like, and could almost be performed as, a stage play. There's almost no cinematic conventions used at all.

Mr. Pink actually does die. While Mr. Orange is confessing to Mr. White in the end you can hear the interaction between Mr. Pink and the police. Everyone dies.
You probably recognize Nice Guy Eddie from Rush Hour. Chris Tucker tried to buy C4 from him.

Loved Tarantino’s creative storytelling in his first outing. The biggest issue I had with this movie is the amount of external hemorrhage of Mr. Orange. I realize Tarantino did that for dramatic effect, but when you get shot in the abdomen you hemorrhage internally not externally. Also, Tim Roth (who I have admired in other roles and in the back story of this film) was a bit over the top acting wise, after his character got shot. Enjoyed your reaction! 😎👍
This is Tarantino's first movie, when he was making the film festival circuits looking for a buyer nobody wanted to buy it. The owner of Miramax approached Tarantino and said they'd buy the movie but they would have to get rid of the 'ear scene' because woman wouldn't want to see that and they make up half the audience. Tarantino said it was his movie and he is keeping that scene in. Miramax agreed to keep it in the movie but told Tarantino to remember what they are letting him do. Anyways, I think the first half of Tarantino's film catalog was distributed by Miramax so Tarantino made them quite a bit of money.

Every actor in Hollywood was trying to get a part in this movie. This was Quentin Tarantino‘s first movie. Everyone loved the screenplay. They knew it was a hit.
This is still my favorite Tarantino movie. If you’re interested check out The Hateful Eight, also from Quentin Tarantino. It has a similar theme.

I'm so glad you loved this one as it's my favorite Q.T. movie! He has a lot of good ones though. Based on your enjoyment of this (and a few others) I really think you would enjoy a movie called Fallen with Denzel Washington and John Goodman. Those were the times when Tarantino made movies where you could still speculate on the quantity of blood would do what.
These days he doesn't start with anything less than more blood spilled than a body can actually contain.

US hospitals are bound by law to report gunshot wounds. In other words; investigation and jail time would be practically guaranteed.
Interesting note, Tarantino sold 2 scripts before this but this was actually the first one produced.
