It meant a soldier who lost their arms and legs and had to be carried in a basket. Now it means someone who's a mess mentally and can't get their sh-t together. This song along with Black Hole Sun and Smells Like Teen Spirit are the songs that turned me into a rock fan. I still remembered watching this video on MTV in Panama (to be exact, it was a countdown show that was aired in one of the local stations at 6pm every Saturday evening until I finally got cable later on that year) and instantly being hooked into this genre. 9 years old, and it change my musical perspective forever.

So a 'basket case ' is when you have to put together what somebody else took apart. And no the parts are never all there you have to scramble to find bolts and small parts that if you miss, will not allow the machine to function correctly. A basket case is the worst kind of case because there are always a few baskets missing.

It just seems pretty weird that no one thinks of songs on their own.
