I like your comparison of board games to books. When people just look to the top 100 games on BGG it is a bit like choosing a book just from the literary prize winner shelf. They are good books but your jam might be romance or mystery. I worry that folks are turned off our hobby if they only try the top ranked games. The 'perfect' game for everyone is out there. Thanks for helping people find their way to the right game for them.

@@RubyRevolution2015 yes! What a great perspective. No wonder I find it hard to find a good book as I always just go off the cover of whats popular. Who knows how many great stories we are truly missing. ☺️❤️❤️❤️

the perfect board game is any game you introduce to a hesitant friend, then get to see them get engaged / getting their gears turning. Help them along, don’t roast them. I’m better at collecting than winning anyway ;).

Thank you! Great video! I think a perfect board game for me and also most of the people I try to introduce games to is take 5. Fast, easy to learn and funny! But you have a great point- "perfection" isn't really possible and just leaves us chasing the next greatest thing.

Interesting thoughts, very relatable! Thank you so much and Happy New Year! :D
The only "Perfect" game for me was Gloomhaven: why? I got it 2017 as English standee version and was at first quite reluctant to introduce it to my friends. They were very opposed to playing anything with a foreign language (we are German) but ... I was there to translate and we played a scenario and then they asked for another until we were all hooked and played through the whole campaign. They even started to learn English :)
By now they still struggle but mostly they can quite cope with bits of English text. Furthermore they might also have learned to trust that I would not take advantage of their struggles when we play competive. It opened a whole new world of games to us :D So much fun!
Of course this is a very individual story but goes to show that any feeling about a game is really linked to your experiences with it. Gloomhaven was the perfect fit for us and with everything that surrounds it it was the "Perfect" game to us.

Personal preference is what I see as "perfect". For me, it's a game with many facets and avenues, that can be discovered and mastered, so that it never gets old, but the tactics can be learned. Orleans and Castles Of Mad King Ludwig have been close to perfect, IMO, but I see potential for more complex games like Ark Nova. Other games are more friendly to new players, but that is almost the antithesis / opposite of this definition of perfect. I love to play Clank!, but its welcoming nature means that it is a little bit shallow compared to Pax Pamir, another one that has potential as a perfect game, for me, because of its complexity, and never-relenting tactical challenge.

I like your thoughts here. And what “fits” often changes as your interests, time, friendships, and setting change. After a big move, I’m having to accept that some games no longer “fit” in my collection and some that I would otherwise like to buy just won’t have much opportunity to be played. That doesn’t keep me from still buying these, hopefully. But it doesn’t make sense, nor is it affordable, to collect too many games that can’t get to the table. They’re no longer the perfect game for me.

Interesting discussion! Since many of us like to rate and score games, I’m curious how this concept interacts with that. Is a 10/10 equivalent to “perfect”? Would someone give a 10 to one of their favorite games that has a theme that really speaks to them even if they can see some possible shortcomings? Or, can a game be “perfect” in one sense or another without ranking highly for them personally? 🤔

Excellent video. I don't think there is a perfect board game, but I have played many board games which has perfect elements to them which with the right balance and right people could make for the perfect board gaming experience.
I think it needs to be mentioned that what makes for a perfect board game is often a matter of getting perfect engagement, challenge and fun for the perfect gamer. But a board game can never be perfect for players with a wrong attitude, who don't try their best making the most out of it. This goes along with your first point about different board games being for different people.
I have played a lot of board games in my life, and have decided that for me to get the best board gaming experience I would either need to edit and make changes to the board games I have played myself, or find a different group of people to play with.
What makes the perfect board game? I wrote this before watching your video, but can see you mentioned similar things. In my opinion I look for the following in a perfect game:
    1. A good blend of choice, strategy and surprise element where luck is a factor but a very small one.
    2. A game which is beautiful, thematic and gives you reason to live yourself into the board gaming world.
    3. A game which provides a lot of options and opportunity for learning, growth, variation to make the game playable many times.
    4. A game which offers far more fun and challenge, than cost, time to set up and understand the rules.
    5. A game which is constantly moving and does not have too many down times, where little or no progress can be made or challenge overcome.
    6. A game which the most people possible can enjoy and with the most flexible game length.
Visually I love games like Mansions of Madness, Small World, Lord of the Rings Risk, Yamatai, Merchants and Marauders and Santorini. But as far is good blend of choice, strategy and luck I think I prefer games like Castles of Burgundy, A quest for El Dorado, Agricola and A game of Thrones. Scruples is a surprisingly fun social game which is easy to get into and for some strange reason not very high rated on BGG. I also love Orient Express, a mystery solving game which has always given a good challenge to me and everyone participating. Ticket to Ride and Scotland Yard are good easy popular games which everyone I have played with seem to enjoy. The same can be said with card games like Phase 10, Rage and Skull Kings. Formula D and Heat Pedal to the Metal are fun racing games, but they carry a bit too much luck for me, while racing games like Derby which I enjoyed a lot as a child lacks a bit too much in choice and options.
I tend to have the most fun actually playing roleplaying games with the right people, but with the wrong people this is never fun. Still I am not a big fan of the rule set of Dungeons and Dragons and tend to enjoy the very simple Hero Quest or more complex Gloomhaven just as much. Still I think roleplaying games could and should be revised as they for me have some of the greatest potential for the perfect game. In this regard chess should also be mentioned because it is perfect in challenge, length of playability, simplicity in rule set and with no luck. The game Go also deserves a mention here.
I tend to love games like Targui, Whistle Stop and Carcassonne where the game board changes every time, but again think these games need a few alterations to make them "perfect" board games. Pandemic and Just One are pretty fun social games. I have not played War of the Rings which looks like it could be a great game with the only disadvantage to me being that it is only a two to four player game. Games like Kingdom Builder can also be fun because of its simplicity, but I tend to get tired of playing it a bit faster and then need to take a break from it to get more challenge.
