Baccara - "Parlez-vous français?"
One of my biggest favourites of the year, a very entertaining disco-influenced number given life with an equally entertaining performance by Spanish duo Baccara. This is my favorite French-language entry of the year and it garnered 3 sets of 12 points, but still only finished in 7th place.

I am very sorry to hear about the passing of Maria Mendiola, half of Baccara (in white), who died on September 11th, 2021. May she rest in peace 😢

Wow que excelencia en presentacion musical lo tiene todo comenzando con el duo Bacara que elegantes damas cantaban y bailaban con gracia y glamour el escenario era magestuoso y con una escenografia movil muy innovadora para la epoca y por supuesto la orquesta que tocaba en vivo y sonaba excelentemente muy bien afinada coordinada y bien dirigida pues se escucha muy fiel como un sonido premium pero en vivo puro High Quality de gran clase algo que hoy dia esta desapareciendo porque a las nuevas generaciones no se les ha inculcado el gusto por la buena musica la instrumental.
.solo una apreciación,y es que el director marcó un ritmo un poco acelerado.años después Mayte del grupo baccara lo dijo en algún programa de tv

And I was just born in 1978. Excellent performance, beautiful girls, the result was a super mega hit that is relevant to this day. And yes, I take this opportunity to express my deepest condolences in connection with the death of a magnificent person and member of the ensemble, Maria. The death of Mary is a great shock and loss for the entire civilized world. The memory of Mary will live forever in our hearts.

The instrumental is really a standout of the performance. It is a partially based on the ouverture of La Traviata.

Izhar Cohen sings better, and that's why he won
Izhar was my second, but his song hasn't aged well, and is very dated, baccara song however is still in date, was a worldwide hit, and has aged amazingly, especially the Eurovision version in specific.
@@nicoledickson6099 Nichole, Seems we all had a good reason to wait one year later for "Milk and Honey" -Halleluya and other good songs...these years of the 70' were the golden era of the ESC...doesn’t matter if it’s no.1,2,11...the orchestra had a significant contribution back then...i'm lucky to be the photographer of Milk and Honey these days, they still perform...
Loved these two beautiful, charming ladies so much! Remember watching in 1978 and loved this song-and have still got the 45 single! (You and Me on B side). They always looked as if they were having fun and sang and performed so well together. And I just loved their beautiful voices too. In fact I adored them when I was growing up! How to be sexy but in a special way-both simply had that aura! And I always love to hear them on TH-cam! I was gutted when they didn't win that year :( But this upload brings back great memories of these two lovely ladies who made everyone happy!!

Если вы воспринимаете самый масштабный музыкальный конкурс на континенте так как описали в этом комменте - мне вас жаль. Проблема не в том - во что превратилось Евровидение, а в том - сколько вам в голову влили, чтобы сузить кругозор и подчинить вашему царю.
Песня, кстати, действительно очень приятная, а терять способность воспринимать жизнь во всех её новых разнообразных проявлениях - наверное, не очень приятно. Забавно читать комментарий, и сразу понимать - из какого мира скреп штампы и шаблоны.
А лукавить всё же не буду - не тревожно мне за вас, и не жаль ни капли.

Recuerdo perfectamente aquel día del festival de eurovisión. Lo grabé en una cinta cassette de la época. También recuerdo que ningún pais les dió la puntuación máxima ( 12 puntos), pero llegó España y les dió twelve points , douze points. ¿Por qué será? (Fué) . Maite mallorquína y María riojana.

When Eurofestival was a show worth following
Dos españolas, que triunfaron en el mundo, lanzadas desde Alemania y que representaron a Luxemburgo en Eurovisión. Yo sólo tenía 8 años y no me enteraba de mucho, pero si fuera ahora... me nacionalizaba luxemburgués, aunque sólo fuera por un día. Que fantasía de mujeres y de actuación !!!! 😊😊
Canción mítica, sin duda alguna la mejor de los últimos cuatro años.
Tema increíble con excelente orquestación, hoy en día suena genial.
Baccara enseñaron como cantar y moverse con clase y sensualidad.
Su séptima posición con 73 puntos es injusta merecían mínimo Top 5.
Me encantó entonces y sigo enamorado sin remedio. Doy 12 Puntos.
Totalmente de acuerdo. Hay algún fallo en la actuación, la orquesta suena demasiado fuerte al principio y a penas se entiende la primera estrofa, además María cantó con un tono demasiado alto y chillón, en otras actuaciones canta mejor. Aunque a lo largo de la actuación se van viniendo arriba y acaban estupendamente bien. Debieron merecerse un TOP 3!

Por dios, si el francés que tienen es igual que su inglés de "café con leche in plaza mayor" que se escuchaba en "I can Boogie". Bastantes puntos les dieron.

@@timbayliss4153 As long as you can sing the language, you can participate I'm sure. Like Luxembourg in 1979, the singer was an American Model who sang in French. 1964 Netherlands participant was Indonesian, who could sing in Dutch (same with some of their entries in the 70s.)
@@timbayliss4153, yeah my dear. Just the same as Vicky Leandros (Greek) or Anne Marie David (French) for Luxembourg and a lot more for different countries, icluded Celine Dion (Canadian) for Switzerland or Olivia Newton-John (Australian) for the UK.
It´s quite unusual that someone who has achieved success do take part in Eurovision but Baccara did so. In my country tv-presenters thought this is not so good it should win and if they´d win because they are succesful act it´s unfair. Also I remember there were speculation that those dresses they wore were very expensive. I remember it quite well because I was a fan of theirs.
@@timbayliss4153 Current rules only demand that the perfomer be at least 16 years old on the date of the contest. Each broadcaster chooses their representatives as they want.

Por ciertos momentos recuerda a la obertura de la Ópera de Giuseppe Verdi “La Traviata”, sin duda alguna es de lo mejor de “Baccara”, ese año fue un robo, pero eso ya lo aclaró Mayte, la disquera (RCA de Alemania) ya les tenía dicho que no ganarían ni se acercarían a los primeros puestos por cuestiones comerciales, pero pueden consultar las ventas, este sencillo fue el más vendido de esa edición del concurso.
Yo también lo pienso. Es un extracto de la apertura de la Traviata. Tiene sentido porque la Traviata está ambientada en París, como el concurso de Eurovisión de 1978 y su canción era en francés. Es un guiño original, no todo el mundo lo habrá notado, pero una muy buena idea para este "dance break".

A Total travesty this amazing performance only got to 7th place...so sad for such truly brilliant showmanship and music and song.....the girls must have been devastated.....The winner in my eyes no question at all....and to be honest would have won most years also....7th is a total joke....xx

Accidentally the mics were switched. The one with the white cord should've been for Maria in white and the one with the black cord for Mayte dressed in black.
It could have made a difference on which voice sounded more prominent. The girl in black was supposed to be the lead and the other the background and we can hear the chorus is too prominent here.
