    Drove one of these back in the 90’s at a bus rally at North Weald BL 90 something, on a driver experience session. Did a circuit of the track and the instructor asked if I had driven a bus before, I replied no never, he then told me to go around again. Never forget the experience. Presume Graham is the son of the late Geoff Rixon who was owner, or part owner of RM254.

    Having had the good fortune of both mechanical apptitude and a very talented dad to teach me, it's extraordinary to see a young man working on these buses, these days. Skilled labor is a rare commodity now, at any age. Cheers from the house of the Mouse.

    I remember back in the late 60’s getting a Bristol Midland Red from Birmingham to London, I am sure no cars overtook us on the motorway, we spent virtually the whole time in the outside lane, great experience, love the sound of the big diesels.

    I like the Bristol LH bus .
    This bus reminds me of my school bus.
    My school bus was a volvo B10M.
    B stands for bus 10 is the model and m stands for a mid mounted engine.
    👍👍👍👍🇸🇪

    Another great vid, that number 216 has been with me all my life! Dad bought me a book as a kid, only bus in it was route 216, 216 is in my driving licence number, I then drove the 216 route here in Liverpool for 12 years and lived in a house that was 216! Keep up the good work. 👍

    Great to see Tim’s bus in addition to the RT and RMs. The big red buses are so iconic that they overshadow their Green Line sisters. The RMC’s run by Green Line were very interesting - being coach spec ie built for distance work and greater passenger comfort. London Bus Museum has one in red livery. Great for wedding/publicity work, I would guess, but lacks the iconic open platform.

    Another great video. Tim … what a stunning little bus BL88 is; even with BL93’s number plate!
    We had Green BL’s at Amersham [MA] Garage … then later had 5 of the narrow BN class … was really sad to see them go. Would love to see BL88 at the Amersham & District Motorbus Society’s annual Amersham & Chesham Bus Running Day at beginning of October. And a Red LT bus is not out of place in the country Area … as we often had Central Red RT’s, RF’s and even into LCBS days SM’s … and as so few of these wonderful little buses have survived … seeing her out on the 359, 398 etc would be a most welcome sight

    After Uxbridge lost their RFs in 1976, they gained 3 BLs (93, 94 & 95) in 1977 for the new 128 service. Character vehicles! Could shift as well.

    Hi Guys,
    Fabulous video, no wonder you all looked tired by the end of it, given hours spent and the sheer costs of just doing all that work - congratulations.
    May I also ask a question - why has BL88 got the registration of BL93? Just wondering.....👍

    • @timhines6543
      @timhines6543 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Peter, yes it has cost me a fair few pennies but it is all worth it in the end. When she worked for OK motor services her fleet number up there was 93 so the swapped registrations with BL93's reg. Most of there buses had the fleet number in the reg so it made sense at the time. I am in the process of getting her original reg back.

    Fantastic job and she looks good as new now. I'm always on awe of anyone who can restore old vehicles of any sort, and get them doing what they were designed to do again.
    One geeky question: did London Transport have a special permission to use white on black number plates, after the white or yellow backed ones came in?

    • @Routemaster4Hire
      @Routemaster4Hire  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Ed, when the buses were first introduced all UK plates were white on black, when the modern colours were introduced this only applied to new vehicles so the buses continued to use white on black.

    Great to see OJD 88R (9088) racking my brains why it changed from this registration to OJD 93R and OJD 93R becoming TAJ 295R (9093) Ex OK Motor Services Bishop Auckland
    They all where a good vehicles 76R included all did cracking service for Ok ( travel) around County Durham till they where took out of service and sold to North East bus breakers 97/98
    Anyone got the answer ?

    Hi That is all good stuff. One thing i am curious about is you did not treat the rust before you painted over it. I have rebuilt a 1936 Riley Falcon and used phosphoric acid on the metal before painting to good effect. Paint whatever it is in my experience does not stop rust. Cheers John

    If that vehicle was originally on the 216 route to Hampton Station, then I must have travelled on it many times in the late 1970s! I remember that these buses disappeared after quite a short time, at least from my local routes (I lived in Hampton, then). I often wondered why this was. Can you enlighten me?

    Never use a screwdriver with a round shaft to mix paint, it does not mix properly, use a flat paddle. Try using small paint roller (not the foam cover type, the suitable fabric covers) - use it everywhere you can, and then only spray what you cannot roll. And get rid of the compressed air spray, use a small airless gun. You will be surprised how much quicker you cover with a good coat, far less over paint floating around - and how much less paint you will use = save money as well. Once you develop the technique - you will use the roller as often on everywhere you can. I can paint a bulldozer in a workshop with a roller, with zero overspray and therefore the other workers can still be doing work in the same general area and the finish is as good as if I had used an airless spray. Yes - some areas you will need to spray or brush - but generally overall, you will kick yourself for not using one earlier and saving expensive paint is always the added bonus. Remember, all that overspray falling to the ground etc - is your money in wasted paint. CHEERS from AUSTRALIA.

    260 hours of prep work.....that was hard to watch.....you might have just powerwashed the whole underside with degreaser and then dry ice blasted the undersides to get to base metal .....shrouding the whole bus in plastic two or 3 times seems a bit much....but if you have a big budget you can do it however pleases you of course
