The camera on the floor with the bus going over it was a VERY cool shot.

I used to travel to school every day on two services operated by RTs in South-East London in the early 1970s, the 228 and the 21. My abiding memories are of how the 21 used to boil over at the top of Eltham Hill after a long, slow, very overloaded drag on a hot day, and also how the conductor would rap twice on the scuttle on the top deck with his blind-changing key at bus stops if he was at the front collecting fares rather than ringing the bell. My Uncle Brian was a London Transport bus conductor and I used to think he had the best job ever.

    Brilliant work!
As good as, if not better than, what Aldenham sent out all those years ago.
    Proper engineering at its best.

Love the videos you put out ❤️ Both me and my wife have struggled with our mental health over the last few years which has meant our MCW Metrobus has fallen into a bit of disrepair, but after watching this video she's started tinkering with it again for the first time in long time! So thank you for inspiring her/us to get back at it! 😁

No apologies required for the video Tim. In fact this latest instalment came across as very polished and professional. Hope David recovers ok though, no offence David, you might just be demoted to cameraman 😂. Keep up the good work on the RT. It will no doubt be a cracking thing once finished, though I appreciate, that’s some considerable way off.

I have very fond memories of these particular buses, red route 51 and route 229 in Kent and the green route 477 through to Dartford. Love the engine sound and when we reached Sidcup the drivers would change just before Foots Cray garage at the bottom of Sidcup hill and the passengers to Orpington virtually had the bus to themselves whilst awaiting new driver, great days. Thanks for these video's.

Hadnt realised this was one of the buses that Roy Gould had had, eventually making its way to Romney Marsh, good to see it getting back onto the road. I might have seen it when it was a Trainer in Streatham in 1979 (might even have a pic on a hidden transparency). I note in 1953 it was used on the Coronation tour route in London, might be possible to get it into the lettering blinds and livery for its 70th year from that though that would be body 5896 Park Royal from 1951, the body here presumably is 6750 (still a 3RT8 classification) from Weymann (though PRV/Weymann was essentially the same company by the time these were built)

That may be down to the overhaul cycle operated by LT when they were in service. There is a good film about Aldenham overhaul depot on TH-cam, it shows the craftsmanship that went into overhauling the RT fleet, a staged of work that seems to be absent in modern bus operating. The quality of care and level of skill that these guys put into this fleet would match the high standards that used to be the rule in the heyday of London Transport.

  • @tonys1636
    @tonys1636 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Great to hear the unique sound of an RT again, there can't be too many around now as unmolested as they were when in service (almost 40 years for a pre war built chassis). Just a shame that modern buses are not built to the same standard or will have the same length of service. Maybe E bus builders will learn that quality pays in length of service.

Very informative Tim, as always. Why though, did you not paint the wood before assembly to the beam? Surely this would protect the timber from potential water penetration? My dad always used to put either a bit of tallow or grease on screws into wood where used in outside applications just so they don't rust and break off if ever had to be removed again. Good work. Keep going and "Get well soon" Dave.

I can still remember the London Transport garages stock number for RT diff oil. It was s5200A, and we would change the oil at the number 16 Rota inspection.
This oil certainly had an unpleasant smell to it, and if the bus had been driven very hard in service we would also find many broken pieces of the Crown wheel.
This of course meant that a reconditioned differential, would be required from our main store which was WH West Ham Greengate Street Plaistow.
It's very interesting to see the progress you are making, thanks for taking the time to show this work.
    Kind regards.👍 Jonnie

Very interesting again. As you say yourself, so much work will have to go into this RT before you have finished. I bet getting it off its wooden stand and starting it again was a very special moment though. Did it really start first time like that? Amazing. I was also surprised at the amount of wood in the support structure.

Many years ago when had more teeth and hair and worked for BT..telecoms...the trucks were all being spray from GPO green to the yellow..
But underneath they were all sprayed silver like your buses.
I always liked that..and seeing yours reminds me of those days..
I would too like to paint the same to my old LDV400..
So, was wondering..is it any special paint or just any old silver..
    Maybe you'll reply...

Much as I am not comfortable asking the depot why they stopped running the London Suburban Loud 4-Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Automatic Gearbox Gardner 6LX and Gardner 6LXC Diesel Engine Olympian ECW’s on routes 30, 121, 230, 271, 349, N279 And 158 why can’t we make the same make of the Loud 4-Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Automatic Gearbox Gardner 6LX and Gardner 6LXC Diesel Engine Olympian ECW Buses but Modernise the insides of these Buses. Also, make it low floor up and down and also extend the middle body part of these vehicles a little bit more so there will be more space for the wheelchair users. By the way, if you could remake and Modernise these vehicles could they also make them into a Loud 4-Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Automatic Gearbox Gardner 6LX and Gardner 6LXC Diesel Engine Olympian ECW Version’s that if it will be possible and to Modernise the insides of these Loud 4-Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Automatic Gearbox Gardner 6LX and Gardner 6LXC Diesel Engine Olympian ECW’s make it low floor up and down and also extend the middle body part of these vehicles a Little bit more so there will be more space and even a London Suburban 4-Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Automatic Gearbox Scania N230UD Enviro 400 MMC’s and 4-Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Automatic Gearbox Gardner 6LX Diesel engine Enviro 400 MMC’s and also extend the middle body part of these vehicles a little bit more. Your complaining about 6 pound a liter, one pound is around $1.60 Canadian. One liter of the cheapest 5W-30 here in Toronto is almost $9cad, cheapest 80W80 gear oil is $12 liter. You're getting your specialized worm drive oil for less than I pay for regular Toyota Sienna motor oil.
