Bug isn't a technical term when referring to anything creepy-crawly, that is just American slang. Bug is a technical term when referring to a group of insects known as the true bugs, which includes stink bugs, and i think leaf/tree hoppers as well.
I love that moment right before Hank signs off where everyone just stares lovingly/in awe of the animal brought it. It's just a really nice moment.
Rio the animated film and Linda & Tulio remind me of Jessi and Augusto.
"I love the cloaca" -Hank Green 2013
I thought the leaf was some kind of jelly.
Btw, I can't get over how beautifully red Jessi's hair is. I love natural red hair. At least I'm pretty sure it's natural. It looks natural and she has the skin of a redhead too. (Also, I know I'm getting creepy but I love her eyes too. I love the distinctive shape. And I'm going to stop being creepy now, I promise.)
No shit... Smart, passionate about incredibly cool things and the red hair. Jessi's a rare gem. Augusto's lucky dude.
The ad was hank for Emerson. Super neat!
I love how genuinely knowledgeable Jessi is ;u;
Some time in the future Hank experiences millipede poop with Olivia 😂
You are a damn kid! Naughty boys and girls, I love you.
Thank you for finally getting rid of that pitch black set. Your new set is so much easier to see everything and a lot easier on the eyes. Cheers!
Based on this episode I thought it would be a turd-le
This reminds me of a part of a childrens' show called "Myror i brallan" in Sweden. (translates to "Ants in my pants") They had a thing called "Gissa bajset" ("Guess the poop"), where they showed some poop, three animals and a gave the kids a few clues. Then you were supose to guess to whom the poop belonged. I loved that show!
Oh wow this looks SO much better! The new set is a tremendous improvement! great job!
Judging from the samples currently decorating my windows, I'd say gull poop goes from green over purple to brownish black in the same defecation. Seabird poop is known for its very high contents of nitrogen, phosphate, and potassium and therefore used as manure (called "guano"). The white part more or less serves the same function as pee, but without the bird losing as much water as a mammal would, allowing for less water in the body and therefore lower body weight.
I'm not going to lie......she's really cute
Guys, great video. I learned several things today. For example i had never noticed that in English you have two words to differentiate "turtles and tortoise", in spanish we only have one "tortuga" and to differentiate we add "de mar" (sea).
sexual tension much?
I though I was the only one who noticed it.
They're both totally adorable dorks. How can there *not* be sexual tension?!
I crush on Jessi so hard, and if I were into guys I'd probably be crushing on Hank too. :P
UbiquitousChe *WE NEED FANFICS NOW*
I so happy they got rid of that dark room and went for a brighter/colorful location
geek flirting at its best... and then the awkward moment when her "life partner" comes in the pic!
Jessi is such a wonderful person. I'm jealous that Hank gets to hang out with her.
Jessi is getting more and more comfortable on camera. It's nice to see. Maybe one day she could have her own channel.
There was a few seconds of awkward silence where they just stared at the poop. Best episode yet. :D
I love the fact that humans are fascinated with other species whereas all other wild animals are generally only concerned with "is it a danger, can I have sex with it, or can I eat it." Our levels of curiosity is what makes us human.
Someone who has a passion for something real.
I love how she always talks in the future tense. "They are going to " "it is going to" "you are going to find" xD "It's gonna have something to do with poop" "It's going to be a tortus because"
Colloquially, both biologists and laypeople use the word "turtle" to mean all chelonians. In general, the reptiles referred to as turtles live in or near the water and have adapted to swim by holding their breath underwater. The reptiles referred to as tortoises typically live primarily in arid regions and are built for storing their own water supply and walking on sandy ground.
Turtles/Tortoises are like my favourite animals, they're so cool
Same in French. 'Tortue', we also differentiate both using "de mers" or even "aquatique"
Bugs: Insects of the order Hemiptera, meaning half wing. Easily recognizable by their outer wings being about half hard and half membranous.
Pairs of legs per segment. Insects have three pairs on one segment. Arachnids, like ticks, have four pairs on one segment. Millipedes.... Crustaceans have five pairs! Crawfish, crabs, lobsters, shrimp, etc.
Smart girl, She really knows her shit.. always good to see when someone has got their shut together
"I love the cloaca!" -Hank Green, 2013
Now I got some new facts for my poop-talk. Much better than small-talk. Thank you!
Love the new set! And I was wondering when Jessi would be a full on guest.
I am not ashamed to say that Augusto is a very lucky man to be with Jessi. She's obviously intelligent and friendly and she has red hair for crying out loud! Words cannot describe how much I wish I could meet a lady like her. No reason for me to be ashamed about that.
Turtle = any shelled reptile of the order Testudines, although many people think that turtle only refers to turtle that mainly live in water.
Tortoise = a special type of turtle that lives on land.
Turtles can feel touch and pressure through their shells much like we can through fingernails. Some turtles like having their shell pet.
birds do produce uric acid and not urea because otherwise they would need much more water to fully get rid of the excess ammonia (would be a huge stress to fly with more weight)
Jess (I think) is actually on TH-cam fairly frequently with Animal Wonders: the video of the talkative one-toothed "hedgehog" Kemosabe has Jess being the one feeding him and talking about him.
Not a huge fan of scishow talk show, but you get my like to stay on the youtubes. Also, could you go over the process of how a human bone might break and heal? I recently experienced just that and would like to know more about what is going on in my body.
The bottom shell keeps their undersides from being torn up if they retract into their shells and get turned over by a predator.
"I love the cloaca" BAD choice of words, Hank!
I'd like to see some close-up shots of said poop (or other objects discussed on the talk shows) while they're talking about it. But still interesting info!
the tortoise's face when she gets picked up seems to say, omg omg put me down this is too high up! :D
2 questions I would have asked: What's the difference between a tortes and a turtle, and do they have nerves in their top shells (and if not, can they feel through them)?
tortoises tend to live on land and live longer lives while turtles primarily live in the water and live shorter lives.
They 'do' have nerves. She's done a video on that over on her channel. She also advises you don't paint them, as that will cause the animal to suffocate.
I need more scishow in my life.
When I hear turtle, I guess I think of terrapin, and I believe believe (Not sure abut any of these) that they can swim, but also walk on land, can retract into their shells, and hibernate in underwater mud. Some examples would be a painted turtle, box turtle, or snaping turtle. Maybe that is a turtle and a terrapin is something different, I don't know.
Thanks for changing the set! so much better!
yucca was making a run for it.
i can almost hear her screaming freedom.
probably yes. i think it could feel the vibrations of the touch.
Thanks, Hank, Jessi, and Augusto for the great video! I always love the talk shows and their relaxing feel. They're great! :D
Oh I love the new set so much! Great stuff, guys! ^_^
Congratulations on your new digs, Hank. Really nice!
We were more concerned with covering the conversations and getting small inserts here and there. In the end, a 4th camera op, specifically one just with the job of shooting inserts of the poop would be a good addition. For this particular shoot I believe it was actually Me, Louey, and Caitlin on camera as Michael was just flying back in from Chicago... I think. It's been a while.
I never thought poop could be a topic to flirt over, but these two clearly do.
Her: Do you know the three parts of bird poop?
Him: Are...are you coming on to me?
Hank doesn't have a calming effect on anyone. Even the tortoise was trying to get away.
Excellent show guys, this is haw been my favourite episode yet :D
Woohoo, more Jessi! I'd STILL love her to host her own animal show! I guess she might be bound to Animal Wonders, though...
Overly enthusiastic is an understatement.
I love the N with tilde's font.
12:40, turtle is thinking "I CAN FLYYYY"
Hearts Breaks All Over...
A bug is a technical term for an insect, arachnid or similar animal that has sucking mouthparts. Like Mosquitos or Spiders.
This is awesome! My grandma has a turtle, and it's already been decided that the turtle goes to my little brother.
My favorite show so far!
Plastron sounds like a cartoon weapon...
FIRE THE PLASTRON LASER!!! *Shoots out tortoises*
As somebody who has done the less than glorious task of cleaning cages and labs I am getting a kick. Also insect frass, I noticed roaches produced a lot of it and would collect it from bins at harvest. Turns out the shit is practically gold.
Thank you for pointing this out.
yep its like wearing a plastic glove and putting it in water you're protected from the water but your fingers will feel wet
That's probably how it is in most languages.
And Hank actually wasn't wrong. Even in English, it's okay to call tortoises turtles, because they are a subgroup of turtles. Many people don't know that, though.
I think I'm in love with Hank.
Sweet new digs! It looks a little like a building lobby though. I keep expecting someone to walk down the hallway in the background.
jessi is so cute and looks like she's having so much fun in this. :)
You are of course right to focus more on the conversations. There were a few good shots of Yuccu (the tortoise IIRC) towards the end too, which is good because the tortoise's shell is quite pretty. The green, gelatin-like thing was weird enough to take a closer look though.
I take it that these talk show videos are done in two takes or something like that?
Loved the new look guys!
Would you be able to age a tortoise by counting the rings on a desert tortoise because there is more food in the summer and it would grow more then so it would make wider rings?
Humans do have tails. It is located at the tip of the spine and curves inward. It is rare but some people are born with it curving outwards.
Bug is actually more specific than insect, it refers to hemipterans.
I was eating caramel corn at the beginning of this video, so thanks for the poop commentary
i love how when hank puts it down it's immediately all like
iiiiii neeeeeeedddd toooo geeeeettt thhhheeeeeeee fffffffffuuuuuuuuuuccckkk aaawwwaaaaaaaaaaayyyy fffffrrrrrooooooooommmmmm thhhhhhhiiiiiisssssss ggguuuuuuyyyyyyyyy
I didn't even notice until now, but there is a tiny little tardigrade to the left of the tesla coil in the introduction. Sneaky, Hank.
Jessi's hair fits in well with the new set :)
Eeeeeeep, I love tortoises! And turtles. (Actually they're both just called "kilpikonna" (literally "shield toad") in Finnish so I always mix them up too, Hank. (Okay, you can say "vesikilpikonna" and "maakilpikonna", "vesi" meaning water and "maa" meaning land.)) Anyway I love them! I'd love to have one but I don't really trust myself to take care of animals... I wanted one as a kid but mum wouldn't allow it; she hates all reptiles for some reason.
love the setting
Indeed they can. Strangely, my tortoise loves to have her rear scratched much like a dog!
Hearts breaking across the interwebs
i love her! she's so great!
Awwww...tortoises ^_^
I am a proud owner of 2 testudo marginata, love them very much, so adorable animals
Millipedes are are from the sub phylem myriapod if i remember correctly.
4:36 - The most awkward silence ever.
I can't believe that, despite talking so much about poop, they didn't discuss the Bristol Stool Scale.
YEEES FINALLY CHANGED THE SET , ITS VERY GOOD =D
Nice new set, relaxed and comfortable looking.
I recall watching an episode of SciShow Talk Show in which Hank was corrected on the function of the cloaca, and we learned more about it. I thought it was this episode, but apparently not.
Does anyone recall which episode that's from?
Love the new set, slightly unhappy to find out Jessi has a partner. Great talk show as always!
Jessi's animals are always so well behaved.
Yes! More Jessisodes, please!
-J
Hank, you should consider doing nature programs similar to the ones David Attenborough does. You'd probably be really good at it.
