  • Like all second gens, our rear window decided to stop working. I had some initial suspicions that it could have been caused by broken wires at the hinge point or the rear wiper position sensor. Luckily, it didn't take me long to figure it out. In this video, I will walk you through the possible causes that I have discovered through my research on the matter, how the window operates under certain conditions, and explain a trick to overcome a faulty wiper motor or sensor to restore functionality of your tailgate window.

    Well that was an easy fix! Nice work. Too bad you didn't know sooner otherwise you could have just plugged it in months ago. Lol

    I just took back wiper off and left the shadt sticking out. No stoppage from wiper going up and even a weak ish wiper motor could get back to center. My brother "accidentally" touched the rear wiper switch and started the non working window symptom. Lose the wiper. Shaft went to center and it thought it was up and gave me function again. Just stumbled upon your channel a few days ago. Great stuff thank you.

    Hi and thanks for your videos! My 1994 4runner back window sometimes struggle to close completely, leaving like 2-3 cm space. What could that be? Thanks in advance and greetings from Portugal 🙂

      Hey thanks! I have found that window seals on these trucks shrink as they dry out and age. I would check the gap at the top of the window trim in the corners as it may restrict the window from slipping into the gap. To fix it you could try and run something to push it out of the way or run some graphite powder in there to let the window slide more easily. Hope this helps! Cheers from Canada!

    Question for you. Do you know where I can purchase a cover for my tailgate? My 4runner was recently stolen and when I got it back the inside tailgate cover was gone.

      @roughcutsgarage  ปีที่แล้ว

      Best bet would probably be a wrecker. I personally haven't searched for one so I'm not sure about an aftermarket one. If it was me, I would use this as an excuse to build my own cover out of wood or something. Cheers!

    Is there a specific gauge wire I need to use to bypass the window wiper ?

    • @roughcutsgarage
      @roughcutsgarage  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm pretty sure there is but I can't say for sure. 16 or 14 AWG would probably be a safe bet but I would want to compare with the wires in the harness first.

      If the handle on the tailgate feels loose or you don't feel any clicks or resistance, I would check the linkages to see if they are intact. Had an issue on my truck where the plastic clips holding the linkages broke and you couldn't get the tailgate open.

    What about won't go back up?

    • @roughcutsgarage
      @roughcutsgarage  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Same considerations apply. There are only so many components to it but I would start at the motor, wiring harness, relays, etc. Nice thing about the window being down is you can open the tailgate to get a good look at stuff.

    someone used a fuse tap in my fuse panel and it fucked up the prongs, spread them way too far, a normal fuse doesn't make contact. I had to take a small punch and dimple the fuck out of the blades of the fuse to make them 'wider' so it worked. took the dash apart twice and replaced the relay shit in the steering wheel before I figured that out lol. now my windshield wipers work

      Hey nice! Glad it fixed the problem. Electrical I find is the most difficult thing to diagnose personally. Always trying to learn more and get better at it. Glad you found the culprit though.

      Do you remember which fuse it was? I think I might have a similar problem. My window was going up and down from the front switch. I fixed the back switch and then they both stopped working now. I’m stumped. Both switches are working and I’ve check the relays and they’re good too. Please help

      Could be a rusted and seized window regulator. You can access it all by taking the carpet and cover off the tailgate from inside the truck. Cramped work space but if it works.
