I wanted to say, thank you for doing these reviews. I appreciate your knowledge and how you present it. Thank you for sharing your experience with us here!
I've been on the fence about a Gayle Bradley folder for a long time, but this convinced me to buy one of the original models before they are gone. It just came in the mail today, and I am really impressed.
I just got mine. Awesome knife. Despite the differences with the old one it is still plenty solid. Also never had m4 steel before... wow it cuts well...
Thank you very much for direct comparison. I was looking forward for video like this and with your approach on this matter I learned a lot. Some people are constantly complaining about video length, but I think that time is adequate to information given. Keep up doing great work!
I randomly came across the 2nd one a few weeks ago and it immediately caught my eye. (it's very Benchmade 940-ish, which is my favorite knife ever). I have never been a Spyderco person, but it is seriously making me think about grabbing one.
Great review on two solid, functional, working knives. I like the lines and the ergos on the GB2 myself but I haven't had a chance to spend a great deal of time with the GB1. Thanks for the shout out!
thumbs up!!!! great review! watching your videos drives me to start my collection, I want to thank you! I have went back and watched probably 50 of ur videos
Great review, thanks. I want the original. Could tell as soon as I saw it the ergonomics were better for carving, maybe even skinning. You picked up on all the right points.
Great review, Rob. I was eagerly awaiting this knife for several months. I held off buying a Gayle 1 because I thought I'd just get the 2. But about 4 months ago, I took the plunge and bought my Gayle 1 and I just love the bank-vault solidity of that knife. Recently, I went to GP's brick and mortar store and handled the 2 and I was not that blown away by it. No knock on it - it is a fine knife, and I do think its a bit more handsome as far as the blade and handle lines are concerned. But, yeah...just didnt knock my socks off like the 1 did and still does.
"Look at my Sebenza for a moment". You kill me brother. Excellent comparison, well presented, highly entertaining. I've got the old one and beyond looking like it'd been hit with an ugly stick during the design phase (gerrrrrrrrrr) I wouldn't part with it as it just plain works as intended, as you expertly described. Thanks for another great video Rob (golf clap)!!!!
I LOVE both ! Of course I love my GB1 more ... haha , I just can't believe these people that want "tacticool" blades and the cutout for the lock bar !!! The GB1 is a tank and I love the way the lock is , I definitely feel safe how it is configured ! Thanks for the review Rob !
I was one of the guys who held off from keeping the GB1 in my collection because of the couple known design issues (eps. the weight), glad to see this video discussing the differences. I kind of like the grip of the original better though! Need to make up my mind now haha!
I now own a Mk 2 partly as a result of this video and it is my favorite EDC. Sure do wish he'd collaborate with Benchmade. I much prefer a thumbstud/axis lock to a thumbhole/liner lock.
Thank you for addressing the liner lock Rob. Being a lefty I just couldn’t cram my thumb or any other digit into that small space to force the lock bar into the neutral zone to disengage the lock left handed, so I never have carried it. I guess you referred to my ilk as wussies, which seems by definition to be accurate with this knife. I liked everything about the gen 1 GB except the disengagement madness so when the gen 2 came out I looked for information stating if any modification had been made or not to facilitate us wussies but could find nothing. Now the only obstruction for me getting a gen 2 GB is if I really want it…hmm?
Also ! Check out the hole on the Nilakka. Works just fine, I just tried shaking the blade out as hard as I could and the detent held. Small holes work just fine !
I've had a pair of the original Gayle Bradleys for a couple of months now and I really like them. One is an early example with solid liners that has been modified with a cutout for easier lock access. The other is stock with the skeletonized liners. I was wishy washy about the GB2 but decided to try one when I found a decent price on the secondary market. Overall I prefer the original but I like the GB2 as well. I will be keeping all three of mine. I think the GB2 should have been a supplement to the GB1, not a replacement. By the way, having GB1 examples both stock and with a cutout, I think a cutout should have been included.
A nice looking blade on it's own merits, but they took away some of the aspects that made the GB1 a unique and interesting folder. I loved the thick liners, and how deep the blade was inset down into the scales when open, making for such a robust knife worthy of the M4 steel. Everything about the new one seems more mainstream, which makes it less unique and desirable to me. If I was a collector I would buy a GB1 and keep it new in box, especially if they have plans to end production of the GB1. Excellent review by the way, Mr. Rob. You have become one of the best reviewers, certainly one of my favorites.
+Pietro B Thanks, Pietro! I'm totally with you on the two knives. I'm thinking about making my GB1 a safe queen (it's the first Christmas present Heidi ever bought me), and buying a GB2 for EDC.
+Pietro B The GB1 was in someways almost a stainless steel frame lock with a G10/carbon fiber overlay (are also slightly undersized) on the locking side.
Rob this makes me sick. I didn't not realize Gayle Bradley was from weatherford. I used to go there 2-3 times a week . I was raised only 1 hr away ! lol. Thank you for another great video
Pretty good and non bias analysis... good thing I bought the last 6 my retailer had, they seem the be discounted as of September 2020... though year IMO
i never saw how they could improve on the GB-1!and far as i can see, they didn't,i'll be hanging on to my 1 probably because its one of the best hard use folders i own,but my thoughts are not much improvement on this new 2nd version of a grate knife! as always good review.
the Bradley 2 is a very good looking knife, aesthetics are important, I fell the flow of the 2 looks better. I have been looking for a higher end EDC Knife, I am having a really hard time deciding between the Bradley 2 and the Paramilitary 2
Well since pm2 came out with s110v its kinda hard to decide. To me gb2 looks more edc than the previous model and also looks like a custom knife compares ti pm2. Btw get a gb2 you wont be disappointed, pm2 is a standard production model so you have plenty of time to grab him in future.
Thanks for posting Rob. Excellent vid as usual. Aesthetics aside, the older knife is clearly the better product. With neither being a 'tactical' (hate that word, only soldiers have the right to use it) knife, it would be interesting (albeit pointless) to see one of Andrew Demko's destruction tests on both. The later version seems to be a step backwards unless sharpening pencils and peeling apples is it's raison d'etre. God be with you brother.
i guess you cannot purchase the gayle bradley "1" anymore, no? where is a good source of spyderco knives that are not sold by spyderco anymore; any suggestions?
I got some good laughs out of this excellent video Rob. I like the lighter wt of the 2 but think that choosing between the two knives boils down to how it will be used. The org. appears to be significantly more robust. I'm inclined to think the average user might be better served by the 2.
I cannot find this knife anywhere for sale. Knifecenter has it listed as "Delayed by the manufacturer" anyone know what's going on? Is it just demand or is Spyderco withholding the knife at this time?
Rob, does the choil mod void the warranty, regardless it needs done. I hate seeing a beautiful blade that flares out at the plunge grind because the designer is to hard headed to do it right!
re: 11:00 - i sit and play with my GB1 constantly. I mean i also use it, but i flick it open and closed all the time too. My thumb is used to it. Wusses!
it's to bad they made the liners thinner...i know that accounts for the shed weight,(not a big issue for me) but it's a feature of the GB1 that i like a lot...theres plenty of surface area engaging the blade tang.....i remember some of the first knives i ever bought...sub $100 knives..that had liner locks that would flex quite a bit when i put pressure on the blade spine...i know thats not how we use our knives..spine whacking and whatnot ...but it didn't inspire confidence ....the GB1 DOES make you very confident
I think it was a kind of a bad call to discontinue the Bradley 1, I think they should have ran the production alongside or reduced the number. They are very different knives, yet similar.
Thanks the review this is you at your best well done. Feel would know just what i was getting into with this knife as an avid sailor would pass due the steel but otherwise think a great knife (truth be told i just a bout live on a beach and have never had a knife rust to the point of failing but it it might be due to my OCD).
I can not make up my mind between these two. I like the blade shape a lot more on the gb1, but I don't see needing the extra strength if the gb2 is still a strong well built knife and the 2 is about $40 cheaper.
I wish they would have named it something different besides "Gayle Bradley 2". Automatically it's a debate about which one is inferior. It's a different knife and they're both nice. The GB2 wasn't designed to be a slap in the face of GB1 owners. The knife community needs to step back and get a grip at times and appreciate all the choices we have.
+bird bones (knifeknerd78) No. The pivot is set much farther back in the handle on the GB1 than the 2, and the tangs are much different on the two blades.
+rabbivj the original is definitely not a stainless. I love mine and nothing has been good enough to replace it. I have the first edition without the lightened handle.
Great review and comparison. I always thought I wanted a 1, but now maybe the 2 is a better fit for me... guess I'm a couch dwelling wuss haha, but excuse me while I actually want to enjoy and appreciate my knives as well as cut with them. Don't get me wrong, I love to use a blade that's designed to cut and does it well but I wouldn't just keep a nice watch in the drawer and only take it out when I wanted to tell the time, I'd want to wear and appreciate it. If that watch had an uncomfortable strap I'd probably still wear it, but not as much!
CF layered with G10 - stronger than single layer of ether. Why? Plywood also layered and this is making it strong. Much stronger that a single slab of wood of the same thickness. By the way I L-O-O-O-VE texture of this CF layer on my Spyderco Sage1. As well as the entire Sage1 knife. It looks like this Spyderco Gayle Bradley Folder 2 might have same CF texture. Also: why Spyderco didn't give coated blade option for the CPM-M4 is beyond me.
The secound GB it is more beauty,,, but the first it is more stronger. The liner lock of first will last forever,, the Nr 2 liner will travel to end,, it is not thick as the GB 1. The liner will make the diference between both
The new one looks to me like they mated the Gayle Bradley to a Griptilian, retaining the Griptilian's two biggest flaws, the pointy guard where your finger wants to go, and the insufficient choil, both of which I always fix with a rotary tool. It's fascinating to see that the market still demands knives that protect inexperienced users from cutting themselves, and shies away from better peformers. I wonder if, over time, advocacy and education like yours will cause changes in consumers and the industry.
Have one, was really excited at first but the handle isn't very comfortable in use as the steel liners dig in your hands some. I think the idea was good but execution could have been better. I'd rather pay for contoured handles. The liner lock shouldn't be so hard to release because often times you'll pull a knife out, open it, use it, and rinse/repeat while working...it's not just for playing with. My other gripe was the tip is a bit too close to the edge on mine, when closed. I'm a Spyderco fan, but this one ended up on the shelf sadly.
Who doesn't sit on their couch and play with their knives:-) And their 1911's? Yes, guilty, but I use the hell out of them as well living in the mountains. It's funny, I get a new knife and usually fondle it for weeks and don;t use it. Clean it, lube it flick it..... start wearing it.... then move on to the next one:-) I do have some safe queens that I will never use, just fondle and then one day sell or trade:-) But those are usually knives over 300 bucks. Damn... I have serious issues.
Its still like $130 or $140, even though its Taiwan.. Why? If it was less than $100 I would probably go for it. But the Para 2 is USA made and similar price, so why is this in the $140 range? I am going to have to pass. Bu I do like the design. Ive always like the Gayle Bradley design. I feel bad that its as much as it is.
+traderjoes The more familiar you get with the Spydie lines from the 4 countries that manufacture them, the more you understand where the Taichung knives fall into the Spydie continuum. I rank them thusly: #1 Taichung, Taiwan; #2 Golden, CO, USA, Earth; #3 Seki City, Japan; #4 China. Really, no kidding... The Taichung knives are of higher quality than the Golden knives. Worth every penny. The Slysz Bowie is well into the mid $200's, made in Taiwan, and still worth every penny.
" A framelock with overlaid scales " the only positive of the framelock over the linerlock is the fact that your hand is pressing on it. I hate that. I like linerlocks more. But saying that a thick liner is like a framelock is complete bullshit. If the liner would bend and fail it would do so at the relief cut, which is thin. Thats the maximum force the knife can take. Many framelocks have 1 or maximum 2mm thick relief cuts on them making them just as thin as the thinnest liners with no reliefs in them.
+Randy Parker Retracted?! What would we do without a Randy Parker comment on a TheApostleP video?! It's like leaving the house without any socks... or Heaven forbid... without a knife! Love you, brother ;)
+TheApostleP. You know I really do not no what I did are said to up set you so. A Randy Parker comment on your channel are any channel means nothing. I was not being ugly I thought may be I said something wrong and by retracting was a way people might see I was wrong. But as far as your channel I have never said any thing against you are your channel. I have recommended it to others on you tube people I know and others I do not know. And the reason is you have a clean channel that any one can watch and you are a Christian. I watch a lot of your videos and never comment but just hit the thumbs up . But I give it to you being compared to no sock was pretty good. The knife well that is the least of my worry's. You no I have bad lungs I am very bad OCD see a nut doctor for this. Sleep with oxygen stay at the house every day not able to go like a lot of folks but I still consider my self blessed as I am a born again child of God. You know I took a lot of things for granted when I could go and do as I please . And like I said I am still blessed. I go on a lot of channels and leave comments concerning God's word the only chance I get most of the time. But I leave this as I am sorry for some thing I have done and I hope you and all your subs your family and all have a blessed day. Randy Parker.
Rob, please consider using metric units in your videos. "Sixty-eight thousanths" sounds archaic, and its not meaningful to the majority of your viewers. Even domestic cars were converted to metric fasteners in the mid 90's.
+glotzy924 Come on now... stretch your mind with me here. If you listen closely, I'll sometimes mix English and metric just for the exercise. Once you train your mind that a millimeter is .0394", or let's say .040" ( we say that "forty thousandths"), the two systems can become interchangeable in your mind. Heck, sometimes I'll even throw in fractions of inches just to keep the old noodle in tip top computing condition. It'll be good for you... trust me ;)
I live in a country using the metric system. But, seeing that the USA is the home of knives they can and do always talk in inches. You do get used to it when they talk about dimensions.
+Xamnosidda "All authority in Heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of The Father, and of the Son, and of The Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. For surely I am with you always, until the very end of the age." -- Jesus (Matthew 28:18-20) That's why. I serve Jesus, and to Him, it's no fail at all, my friend.
Rob, does the choil mod void the warranty, regardless it needs done. I hate seeing a beautiful blade that flares out at the plunge grind because the designer is to hard headed to do it right!
+TacRatt60 It shouldn't really have any more effect on a warranty than sharpening, especially in a case like this where you're removing a very small amount of material. Now, when I use a Dremel and a drum sander to add a forward finger choil to a knife that doesn't have one, that's another matter.
One of the most competent and humorous reviews I've seen, bar none...
Excellent video Rob, Love the sense of humor!
Love it! The streamlined look make it more appealing to the eye.
Thanks for the info. I was planning on getting the Gayle Bradley II, but after seeing this, I want the original.
Thanks for the super detailed comparison. Just ordered the 2 and may try to locate the 1
Nice comparison. Thanks Rob. I love my original Gayle Bradley I just may have to have both versions.
Another great review! I didn't know Taiwan and Texas where that close. Spyderco is definitely after my wallet on this one regardless. God bless.
Great video Rob! Been waiting on that one. The handle shape of the GB2 reminds me a lot of my Benchmade 710. Very similar I think.
I was looking forward to this comparison, thanks Rob!
The first Gayle Bradley reminds me of the Stretch. Both are beautiful!
I was one of the guys who held off from keeping the GB1 in my collection because of the couple known design issues (eps. the weight), glad to see this video discussing the differences. I kind of like the grip of the original better though! Need to make up my mind now haha!
+555 Gear get the 1, it's perfect.
I would love the have the GB 2 with GB1 liners
You could probably swap the blade with some mods or just buy a GB 1 and shape it to the GB 2
I now own a Mk 2 partly as a result of this video and it is my favorite EDC. Sure do wish he'd collaborate with Benchmade. I much prefer a thumbstud/axis lock to a thumbhole/liner lock.
Thank you for addressing the liner lock Rob. Being a lefty I
just couldn’t cram my thumb or any other digit into that small space to force
the lock bar into the neutral zone to disengage the lock left handed, so I
never have carried it. I guess you referred to my ilk as wussies, which seems
by definition to be accurate with this knife. I liked everything about the gen

Kinda fell in love with it at the Amsterdam Meet.
I'll have to keep my eyes peeled for one :)
As always, great review!

A nice looking blade on it's own merits, but they took away some of the aspects that made the GB1 a unique and interesting folder. +05generic Very insightful and on the money comment, Robert. Great to hear from you!
TheApostleP
Thanks Rob.
do you find the exposed steel liner giving you any hot spots?
Cant decide between getting this or the para2..
I have the same dilemma.
Rob I'm wanting to get a wet stone there is two I'm looking at a 1200 grit and a two side 400 grit and 1000 grit witch one should I get.
+James Amescua If it's your only stone, go with the combo stone. If you already have a lower grit stone, go with the 1200.
Thanks for the help.

what can I say, i'm just a general badass. LOL.
Got one, still in stock in UK 🇬🇧

Rob, opinion time. if you bought a new EDC and price was the same, the choice was between cts-xhp or cpm-s30v which knife would you own?
+MobileIndifference That one is a coin flip for me.
Thank you for the answer. One more, if you have the time. Is s110v worth the premium or the other 2. again, it's edc.
I think it was a kind of a bad call to discontinue the Bradley 1, I think they should have ran the production alongside or reduced the number. They are very different knives, yet similar.

could you trade the blades on them and have them fit properly?
+bird bones (knifeknerd78) No. The pivot is set much farther back in the handle on the GB1 than the 2, and the tangs are much different on the two blades.
I've got gb2 in linen micarta
Excellent knife....
isnt CPM-M4 a non stainless steel, eg it will rust easier?
+rabbivj It is definitely not a stainless steel.
TheApostleP
Yeah i had the original GB and couldnt remember if it was a non stainless or not...
+rabbivj the original is definitely not a stainless. I love mine and nothing has been good enough to replace it. I have the first edition without the lightened handle.
yeah being the fact i live in a very humid area i was worried about rust and such hence why i got rid of it.

+ everyday knife guy 👍's up.
I had the 1. It's a solid knife. I just didn't like the handle shape .
CF layered with G10 - stronger than single layer of ether. Why? Plywood also layered and this is making it strong. Much stronger that a single slab of wood of the same thickness. But isn't that what carbon fibre is anyway? Layers of carbon fibre impregnated with epoxy?
mine came with horrible lock stick. not really a fan of the lock bar ergos either.
The secound GB it is more beauty,,, but the first it is more stronger. The liner lock of first will last forever,, the Nr 2 liner will travel to end,, it is not thick as the GB 1. The liner will make the diference between both
Would you still give the GB2 a thumbs up? God bless you.
Mark Collier Absolutely Mark. Live that knife!
Nice vidio.
สวยงามมากครับ
M4 is the BEST knife-steel IMO. If all that matters to someone, too lazy to wipe the blade after use, H2 is your choice for REAL stainless-steel
Sig229DAK I agree completely. There are certainly situations into which I don't carry am M4 blade, but it takes and holds an edge like nothing else.
I will take the Gb1 over the second one any day .
Thank The Lord I didn't have to choose!
TheApostleP I think I'm gonna hunt down the 2nd one and add it to my collection. Maybe switch the blades lol.
Spyderco is suppose to be from Colorado but some of there knives are made in Japan 🇯🇵 and u.s think they have hard time having there knives in u.s.a
Who doesn't sit on their couch and play with their knives:-) And their 1911's? Yes, guilty, but I use the hell out of them as well living in the mountains. It's funny, I get a new knife and usually fondle it for weeks and don;t use it. Clean it, lube it flick it..... start wearing it.... then move on to the next one:-) I do have some safe queens that I will never use, just fondle and then one day sell or trade:-) But those are usually knives over 300 bucks. Damn... I have serious issues.
I hate those big ass holes. Unfortunately, the only ones that come with smaller holes are their more expensive.
Check ya later sprinkles
" A framelock with overlaid scales " the only positive of the framelock over the linerlock is the fact that your hand is pressing on it. I hate that. I like linerlocks more.
But saying that a thick liner is like a framelock is complete bullshit. If the liner would bend and fail it would do so at the relief cut, which is thin. Thats the maximum force the knife can take. Many framelocks have 1 or maximum 2mm thick relief cuts on them making them just as thin as the thinnest liners with no reliefs in them.
g10 = 0.065 lb/in.^3 vs carbon fiber = 0.050 lb/in.^3. 23% lighter carbon fiber solid handles vs G10.
Randy Parker comment retracted.
+Randy Parker I was serious, Randy. I always look forward to reading your comments. Keep 'Em coming, brother!
is this nutn fancys brother has he watched more than i have. "his talking patterns"
Just got my GB2. If you don't know the good Lord. Try Luke 22:36-38
It'll be good for you... trust me ;)

First!!!
Ugly knife?
I think so :-)
Thanks
Please stop using fractions and use decimals. If I wanted to think that hard I wouldn't be watching knife videos.
I live in a country using the metric system. But, seeing that the USA is the home of knives they can and do always talk in inches. You do get used to it when they talk about dimensions.
No one uses fractions to describe blade lengths
kyle v I know it makes the millennial brain hurt, but exercise does that. It’s just my little way of giving back 😉
You are very knowledgeable with knife edges, but why do you have to ruin your channel with religious references? Fail.
+Xamnosidda "All authority in Heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of The Father, and of the Son, and of The Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. For surely I am with you always, until the very end of the age." -- Jesus (Matthew 28:18-20)
That's why.
