  • Balance bike or pedal bike with stabilisers? That's a very good question! After all, most of us adults probably learnt to ride a bike with wobbly stabilisers.
But things have changed! With most children starting out with a balance bike these days, stabilisers are becoming a thing of the past. That can only be good news given that:
Balance bikes are smaller and lighter than bikes with pedals. That means little ones can satisfy their growing urge to move sooner. As an added bonus, balance bikes get the whole family on the move more.
Riding a balance bike is a fun way for your child to develop their motor skills.
Stabilisers are likely to come off the ground if it's uneven or bumpy. If your child happens to lean to the wrong side at that moment, the bike will tip over.
Balance bikes are a fun way to introduce your child to the world of cycling and help them build up the confidence they will need when they upgrade to a pedal bike. They will pick up all the key skills required for cycling later in life like setting off, balancing, steering and using a hand-operated brake.
Bikes with stabilisers have the opposite effect, as your child will be constantly relying on a stabiliser wheel in addition to the main wheel. Stabilisers give your child a false sense of security and confidence in their ability - as soon as they are removed, your child has to re-learn how to stay upright and keep their balance, whilst getting to grips with the basics of cycling again. Every time your child shifts their weight, it will feel wobbly to them, so they will try to avoid making these crucial balancing movements. Stabilisers are actually counterintuitive when it comes to developing a good sense of balance. Not to mention that they are an added weight, making bikes heavier than they need to be. That's why we have purposely decided against stabilisers here at woom.
