You have touched on one of the core logics of Chinese thinking, i.e. the 2,500-years time-tested "Doctrine of Moderation", by Confucius, that teaches the Chinese not to go to the extremes or by black and white. Thanks for the in-depth investigation on the cultural differences.
The Western mindset tends to analyze, the Chinese mind set tends to synthesize. The most stunning example I think is the kitchen knife, or the kitchen knives! In the western kitchen, there are many different knives, one for each specific purpose, like a paring knife, a cheese slicer, a bread knife, etc., the skill requirements on the user is minimized. In a Chinese home kitchen, very often it can do with just one general purpose square chopper-like knife, but more user skill is needed.
Well said. The same kind of thinking goes for pots and pans. In the Western kitchen they have saucepans, frying pans, etc, whereas in the Chinese kitchen, the Chinese wok serves just as well.
Same as chiese cooking. An American wanted to learn to cook a Chinese dish. When he saw I put some salts, he asked how much should I put. I said a little. And he asked how much 'a little' is, one teaspoon or two teaspoons, be exactly. He didn't know it always depends on the real situation and make necessary adjustments.
Great to see you collaborate with Cyrus Janssen today 👍❤️😂 Chinese thinking is based on Yijing, the 64 hexagrams, and one gram is either yin or Yang ☯️ Westerners and Chinese have different duality mindset. Westerners see yin and yang as different thing, that's why they're always in conflict. The Chinese see yin and yang are the same 🔥
@@relaxwhc The Yin Yang ☯ symbol has a characteristic where there is a small white dot in the black space, and also a small black dot in the white space. It's all about balance of opposing forces, rather than just all black and all white.
Initially I was confused... But I soldier on and hear you out until the end... Eventually I became enlightened. You really made a lot of effort to even go into how the different "black boxes" function taken into consideration and due to their culture and beliefs. Thank you. Keep up the great work. Cheers.
The binary way of thinking, means that many Westerners tend to see things in black and white. The Chinese way of thinking is more nuanced, like the Yin Yang symbol ☯ of a white dot in black space and a black dot in white space. It's all about balance and harmony of opposing forces.
Being a physics and computing major, and a live-time science nerd, this is the first time I've heard someone using Qubit to describe the Chinese philosophy. Interesting.
I believe one of the most typical chinese thinking is "win-win" which is to think from your opponent stance and comes up with solution satisfting both",. The bottom line is we human must all live in the same global village, and we must find ways to get along with each other peacefully with respect and fairness toward each other.
Binary options are a revolutionary way of earning in the financial markets, which is very straightforward, quick, and extremely lucrative. You probably know that financial markets are venues where currencies, such as the dollar, the euro, or the pound, are traded 24/7, i.e. with no breaks or days off whatsoever. A binary option is a very profitable trade but many people fail to understand that in any trade you must go by a certain rule for you to succeed, The same goes for Binary Options, you must have a reliable strategy for you to make a profit. I saw a post about a man named Logan Hudson and how he helped people recover their loses through his strategies, I was eager to know him since I was a victim of loss too. Since then, he has helped me master his strategies and I have recovered all the money that I have lost in the past
Who Ever recommended Mr Logan Hubson here 3 months back, I SAY A VERY BIG THANK YOU I contacted him and i have been making so much money with his signals and strategies
Basically chinese culture and mindset are more flexible and pragmatic. By the chinese thinking if u are not our friend that doesn't mean u are our adversary authomatically. From the chinese perspective there are always a possibility and opportunity. The western mindset is more like: if u are with us or u are against us (yes or not/ to be or not to be).
This is wrong based on US foreign policy alone. The US has dichotomous relationships with many countries, I mean, just look at Nixon's relationship with Mao. The US obviously felt China was an adversary, but it also saw the possibility and opportunity to use it to weak the USSR.
@@RayCromwell , in my point of view US's self-intrest foreign policy based on her own domince role in any partnership which she can dictates the relationship. US uses these two potential (opportunity and possibility) mostly to service her own intrests. The chinese (on the otherhand) foreign policy in self-intrest meaning based on their mindset of relationship, that is only through trustfull and co-operative action in the co-existence world could service better for them than to think the world should be divided to "black and white". Chinese not always see the two potential in all their co-operation relationship. Its doesn't needs to be a own intrest situation that its could be seen as an opportunity and possibility- chance.
@@mikeandersson7962 If you look at all of the Belt and Road initiatives, there are plenty of examples of relationships that look incredibly one sided, imperialistic, exploitive, and exist mainly to benefit China. They are not doing anything substantially different than what the Americans or Europeans were telling themselves about investments made in the 70s-80s through the IMF. It is impossible for there not to be dominant privilege when small, poor country negotiates a deal, be it with the US or China, the deal will be lopsided due to a superior negotiating position. To act like the #2 economy in the world doesn't exert dominance in relationships is naive. Ecuador and Montenegro might have something to say on this.
@@RayCromwell , its for sure the chinese arent doing it for charities, its all about business. But what the future can bring for those BRI countries just let the future tell, not for so fast to point the finger on other. I prefer more to look futher on issues. But for sure these countries had lost more doing with the western countries, thats why they turn to china for alternative, for a reason.
I'm probably preaching to the choir, but in case there are some new viewers, please do understand that Pascal's videos are University level (5xx?) lectures. For Free!!! or a moderate donation. To gain this level of knowledge you typically would have to pay thousands of dollars. I'm going to watch this one again to really understand what Pascal is talking about!
Thanks Johann! Your feedback is much appreciated. My videos are for free indeed. I earn money by providing live keynotes about China around the world to corporations or large events. I also do that for London Business School and CEDEP at INSEAD. That way, I don't need to earn money for making my videos and enjoy sharing them to anyone online.
This is a very difficult topic and especially alien to the Western mindset where as you said it is about good versus evil, dictatorship vs democracy, repression vs liberalism. The reality is much more complicated in fact much more contextual. This answers the question why the West's efforts to impose a one size fits all approach to economy and governance often fail in developing countries? Countries have to work out by trial and error what works for them. Excellent Mr Pascal. I look forward to buying your book!
This is a very difficult concept to grasp and explain. You've done a good job Pascal. Being an immigrant from HK and lived in North America for the last 40 years and does business with China for the last 20, I have the DNA of an Asian yet an educated mindset of a westerner. I can understand these concepts better than most yet is still not easy. I can flow between the cultures and often being called on to bridge the communication gaps between western clients and Chinese factories. To be that bridge, you need to be trusted as an impartial and I think this is what's lacking now in the geopolitical world. China and the U.S. needs to find someone that they can both trust and use it/him/her to smooth the tension between them so we can all live in peace. A direct dialogue sounded good and reasonable but if one is talking binary and the other is qubit, this barrier will never be removed.
I was always a qubit person. In my past i got often confronted with an angry type of person who wanted me to delineate exactly what i mean and to say exactly yes or no. Is it this or that.. only 2 options. Thats absolutely impossible to answer in this way. It is all so much more complicated than black or white. It is not 1 or 0 it is more like 110001010101010101 (as one entity). This video above really gave me a better insight of the functioning of the world and the society in general. I guess i am also some kind of "concealed" asian who looks like an born european. :D I also want to be a "master" more than be "unique". Now i also understand one more thing... people often think i want to be unique and i don't know what they're talking about. I want to be a specialist, not unique... i am delighted to found a new field of interest for me - China.
As Deng Xiaoping said, a good cat is one which can catch a mouse regardless whether it is a black or white cat. Result is important and this helps promote inclusivesness and diversity. Communism has strong bearing on social values unlike the West thinks.
Do not forget that Communism arose from European thinking about man's position in society and feeling of injustice....it developed from a feudal and later a capitalistic industrial society. Europe ...especially Northern Europe seems to have managed to build rich and fairly even societies pretty well. China still has a long way to go and may end up far from socialist ideals. The USA is not even close to creating a fair society.
@@bjrnhjortshjandersen1286 I don't agree Northern Europe can hold that any longer especially after they join NATO. They will need to pay a lot in military expenses to support defence of their cast countries. China could have been a great country if the West had left China alone 100 years ago. Thanks to the Western invasion, China has to constantly adapt to the imperial threat from the white people. Don't try to accuse the Asians of not being able to manage themselves well for most of today's problem come from the evil West.
@@linphilip6389 Well, it is territory which is generally very defensible and those nations are rich and well educated. Russia will have to redevelop its military after its bad performance and invest heavily in the development and construction of new modern weapons which are already available to NATO. The Dialectical Materialism of Marxist Philosophy and the Taoism of Ancient Chinese Culture also dovetails together to create a richer understanding of complexity and societal change.
Talking about squares n circles, reminds me that my mom always said.. like an ancient Chinese coin, even if inside is square , outside would be smooth n rounded.
Excellent analogue, thanks. Chinese philosophy believe that nothing is right or wrong, all depending on context. A person or country can be a friend or enemy at the same time.
In the West most people believe in God and Devil. Something is entirely good or evil. On a personal matter thats kind of right : If you are allergic to peanuts, you might die from eating one. In China there is yinyang, a consept of balance as the force of good, and imbalance a force in need of correction. In regard to societies and life on earth (not individuals), I would say the consept of balance as the force of good has proven to be right. In US, the solution to terrorisme is war/isolation - which only creates more terrorist. In China the solution is "to restore balance" = education, equals opportunities etc. Seems like it works far better then the US policy/mindset.
US : We promote freedom and democracy. Also US : We will fight any nation opposing our will and we will continue to be the dominante force in the world (Mike Pompeo).
@@ellengran6814 It is not true. Saudi Arabia is not a democratic country. Did the US fight this country before? The US fought other countries for her own interests in the name of democracy. The US invaded Iraq and hanged Saddam Hussein in 2003 for the Iraqi oil but not because of weapons of mass destruction. The US overthrew countries in the middle east and north Africa. Set up democratic PRO-AMERICA PUPPETS there. The US is a hypocrite. The US wants to keep global dominance and hegemony.
Great video! The Chinese concept of Yin and Yang sounds Binary, but in Chinese philosophy, Yin can turn into Yang and Yang can turn into Yin in certain circumstances, now that's Qubit.
Thanks Pascal for explaining a very complex subject on mindset, binary, Qubit etc. The world, even from the start of the universe, started off binary, for example, when there is sunlight, it is "Day" and no sunlight, ""Night" and evolved to "Bright vs Dark", "Good vs Bad" , "Yin vs Yang" etc., and at some point in time, thousand years ago, Lao Tze wrote in the Tao Te Ching that everything in the universe is in a constant change, it can move/flow from "Yin" to "Yang" and vice versa. And within the "Yin" there is "Yang" and so within the "Yang", there is "Yin". But what was it that caused the change or movement? Newton's Laws of Motion offered some explanation. Using water as an example, it has 3 stages or forms, solid as in ice, liquid as in water and gas as in vapour. How water alter or change its stage/form or the direction of that change, depends on what conditions, situations exist/persist. As the condition gets colder and colder, you can predict that the water will turn to solid ice, in a predictable time. Likewise, if one applies heat to the water, you can predict when you can get steam. Hence, the folks, be it philosophers, scientists, IT experts etc., who goes beyond binary, who understand that things change under different conditions, in different times etc, will always do better than those still stuck in rigid binary world. This also give rise to what is known as "AI" which can do self learning, self adjustment and prediction...where it knows, for example, that the 2 set of hand writing belongs to the same person at different ages while the binary system tell you that the hand writings are from 2 different person. So, how well a person fare, depends not on which country or which society etc., but rather on how "rigid" or "fluid/agile" in adapting to changes for the better results. China had learned from its grave and painful lessons in history, thinking that it was the most powerful and hence, no need to adopt modernization in the Industrial age, unlike Japan which modernized earlier at that time. It ended up China could not match the invading foreigners power and suffered the "100 years of humiliation". In my mind, it will never happen again, the sufferings, pain, humiliation and memory of that period was too great, too deep to be erased..Hence, they are full speed ahead and great progress it make. Cheers

More freedom at an individual level, but China has more freedom at a society level. For example, individuals not allowed to have guns in China, but they have freedom to walk in the park at midnight. The West is definitely more transparent, judging from the level of misinformation by the mainstream media.
I remember watching a TEDx talk about explaining the difference between normal computers and quantum computers. A binary (1 and 0) computer is like someone reading 100 books. They start with the first book, read to the last page, close it, open the next book until all 100 books are read. It's a slow and *linear process.* Whereas a quantum computer is like someone reading all 100 books *at the same time.* It achieves this through the use of qubits like you said, which can range from 1 to 0 or any values in between.
@@Shenzhou. thanks for your input My example was using Boolean logic versus computational values - in the end it’s they are the same maxing out the number of options and between two given data points. I was trying to get to the base level of a qubit, coherence, de-coherence and don’t know till you measure.
There is an argument to be made that there is not an infinite set of numbers according to Einstein and Sabine Hossfelder - the number was already determined, the pro infinite number argument is coming from Bell’s Inequality and all the loop holes have not been closed in that experiment yet. We are not at the point where QM knows for sure. Further more Qubits are inherently error prone due to unwanted decoherence and at this point checked by binary computers. I get it though it’s sexy to say that Chinese think like Quantum Computer versus the old legacy computers that the west thinks like. That is genius to come up with that esp for a book. it’s just a tough argument to make regardless of the nationality. Also I think people are confusing the reason why QC are more powerful in some ways. There are only three states. The confusing part is where they say it could be infinite values but actually it’s just one state of super position. So really the power is coming from 3 states zero one and super position vs using two states zero and one.
I disagree. 易 is the soul of the Chinese civilization and culture is one expression of the Chinese civilization. Confucianism is but one interpretation of 易。
In this talk by Coppens on binary and Qbit, one is reminded of the cenry old Daoist Tai chi diagram. A circle is divided into two equal half in the binary mind set but for the Chinese Ying and Yang coexist harmoniously in different proportion continuously, very much A Qbit mindset.
Brilliant presentation! This is what people who have very little knowledge of China need to see! This analysis needs to become mainstream 👏👏👏 Btw I’m living in China and would love to read your book. Is there any way to purchase it somewhere in the mainland?
Another way to express the difference of mind sets between west and east is that the western thinking tends to be more linear in the sense A causes B and B causes C; while the Chinese thinking is more nonlinear in the sense A influences B and B also influences A at certain thresholds, and there is C. Therefore in actual decision making you don’t try to maximize one’s benefits at the expense of others because they will ultimately also affect your welfare.
In Chinese about nation has two characters “Nation + Home”; History told us no home will be intact when nation shambled or crushed which proofed true for all people around the world. China has all kind of philosophy, religions, races, dialects you could imagine; we are not united by trust or relationship but essence of that called “mutual interest”. Without mutual interest family, friend, nation can turn into enemy easily. The grand western strategy of dividing CCP from its people is stupid, even fools no willing to live the life years before, and remembers they have mutual interest and that is only principal China doing well dealt with nations in the world, no hegemony, you know how hard that is only to alleviate their own poverty and keep it. Yes, I am just a Chinese live in Taiwan with open eyes. Chinese has never boasted about equality, liberty, human right, freedom of speech, indiscrimination, so on and so forth; you don’t say it, you just do it, but which good country has done it, none. After 300 years of western colonizer invasions, tell me why the people of South America and Africa are still in poverty except genocide occurred countries of 4 eyes, because there had no mutual interest, and the only interest is mine of invaders. Trust = Interest, rethinking is needed. Chinese don’t have to trust each other; why should we, interest will do; human are more practical than you realized
Thank you Pascal, your mind and the way you are helping us all to cultivate our political and social consciousness is priceless and much appreciated. I hope all is well for you and your kin.
规定是死的, 人是活的. It’s all about changes and adaptability. Chinese believed rules are rigid but people are changeable and not devoid of flexibility. Rules are fixed and people are not. People can find a solution but rules can’t. People have a thinking mind but rules don’t have any.
One thing we ought to rethink if corporations structure operate their day to day business is considered as Communism? Share holders, board directors, and operating officer. Can we take an open minded moment : People=share holders, party members = board directors, top leader = CEO ? Contrast: We in the west, any boo will able to take the top job regardkess if you are a convict, impulsive liar, mentally ill bi-polar person...as long as there's a moment capture the opportunity twisted people mindset vote on you, disregard your ability manage a giant home affair...
Call it a dictatorship of you want, but a 4 yr presidential term is stupidly short. A big software or construction project can easily last more than 4 years, then imagine a company's CEO gets changed every 4yrs... Nothing significantly gets done. How would you then put this to work at a country scale where each project takes a decade to complete? Presidential term should be more like 20yrs and rules should be in place to safe guard against abuse of power.
Because a President isn't needed to make sure a project gets finished. That's why you have laws and contracts, which bind organizations in the future (no matter their leadership). The reason things don't get done in the US isn't due to Presidential term size, it's due to the country being deeply divided, and the Senate in the US requiring super-majority to do anything thanks to filibuster. The US had no problems building massive infrastructure in the 1950s/60s, etc We had no problem going to the moon, even though Kennedy died. Success of policy should not be based on a single leader, it should be based on the overall system itself being resilient to shock. Look at Apple, even after Steve Jobs died, it continued to do amazing things. And Tesla will survive Elon Musk leaving if necessary. Great companies, great countries, should be able to weather the loss of a single person, otherwise they are inherently unstable.
It reminds me of the famous Chinese proverb story "Blind men touching an Elephant" (瞎子摸象), where 4 blind men were introduced to an elephant, and since they all just felt a specific part of this large animal, they all argued about what an elephant is like.
What ever my stance may be with the CCP. I am really impressed by the number of Chinese commenting in English. I can def say most Americans are including me cannot do that. Meaning commenting in a language that is not English
I love the explanation approach about the religion of monotheism vs. polytheism: monotheism only can have one truth, so disagreement is an existential threat to our soul's ascention to heaven. However, I would posit that our Western binari mindset is much older than Christianity. The reason the Christian religion has evolved into what it is, is precisely because of the culture it evolved in.
I have this anecdotal expreience when discussing about philosophies/religious kind of topics... and I think it is similar to what you've been talking about in this video. I think in the chinese worldview, it is accepted that some facts can't be known for sure, for example how the universe or planet or our world are created. It is more important to know how to live in it, and get to where you want to go. Contrast to that, the discussions when I have had in the west oftens goes to the core principle of things. You need to be able to explain things from where you are to the logical end before an argument is taken as workable. Very quickly, the discussion gets so far away from practical/tangible/visible things to abstract ideas... Just my little anecdote that I want to put it out here ;) thanks
as a Malaysian Chinese kind of agree with what you say. we were told to that the world is not only black and white but also grey. 😂 I think this might be the way Chinese survive for so long because we doesn't really mind living with grey area if its benefits everyone.
China is not a dictatorship but it *is* authoritarian. What's the difference? Authoritarian means obedience to a central authority. This was the case in China for thousands of years and through dozens of dynasties. I might add, this was also true through many centuries of European monarchies. Therefore, authoritarian does not mean bad, unless you think the British monarchy was bad, or the Spanish monarchy was bad. Westerners think that their modern democratic institutions are so superior. But there are many instances of Western democracies that have failed their people miserably. Westerners also believe very much in the capitalist corporate structure which is ironic. The capitalist corporate structure is as authoritarian as you can imagine. The CEO is chosen by the Board of Directors. The workers in the company have no say. The CEO exercises absolute power. Whatever he/she says goes. The workers in the company must comply. In this way, China follows the capitalist corporate structure. The President is chosen by the Politburo; the people do not vote for him. Whatever the President says goes, and the people must comply. This model of governance works because it is also *meritocratic* - the leaders tend to be very intelligent and competent and visionary. This explains China's spectacular rise. So why do Westerners support the capitalist corporate structure, except where it applies to national governance?
China in the past was a yin (0) and yang (1)society. But today China has transformed to a bagua (八卦) society. There are 64 guas (卦) in the bagua (八卦) system. The bagua system is indeed based on the yin (阴) and yang (阳) or the 0's or one's. In words, China no longer stays on the lower hierarchy of the base of yin yang. The Book of Changes was written through different dynasties in China. In the Book of Changes (易经) it says the universe came from nothingness (无极). Then, yin and yang was born of universe. From the yin and yang comes the four phenomenons (Si Xiang), basically represented by Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter. Then the next level of Si Xiang is the bagua, which has eight guas. So, the Chinese believe the world came from nothingness to the universe and the yin and yang was born of universe. The yin and yang extend to include the four seasons and the four seasons extends to bagua and so on...to further a total of 64 guas. (The yin and yang system ican be represented by: 2^1, 2^2, 2^3, 2^4, 2^5, and 2^6 guas) In fact, we are moving from the digital of 0's and 1's of the current computer system to quantum computing. In quantum computing, we are not limited to 0's and 1's. It also includes the states of the superposition of 0's and 1's.
Hi, Pascal, You can learn Go, an ancient Chinese game, this game has only black and white chess pieces, but it is the hardest game, you know AlphaGO has only recently beaten the best human player. You can experience QUBIT very well in the game.
breathtaking how quickly this went from seeming to be a very tight analysis to having cracks showing through so dramatically that it make me wonder how much of the rest is held together by suggestion and innuendo. the entire segment regarding "the west still keeps its binary mindset when it comes to china" is riddled with abortive logical tangents. The manner by which they are presented and then discarded gives the impression that these tangents are meant to imply a point. For instance, that the PRC is focused on ending poverty, which is meant to imply that the west is incorrect in accusing the PRC of exploiting its poor. Yet, this adopts a western presumption as to what marks poverty and how it is alleviated, it implicitly places a binary focus on whether the alleviation of poverty is either good or bad, and it totally ignores the Schmidt perspective which is that those with less power than the state can be raised up to have a higher level of productivity without being granted enough power to have any agency within their system and thus threaten state control of it. Giving a slave a shovel makes them better at digging holes, but it does not make them free. The same issues apply to every point raised in this segment. Each apply a western style of presumptive value to the subject, each imply a binary choice underwritten by suggested ethics which seem to indicate that the west is confused or hypocritical regarding the subject, and each is abandoned for the next without any exploration of this nuance or context. Regardless of what the goal was here, it failed. Thats a crying shame because the exploration into what you call qubit thinking as opposed to binary thinking is absolutely a conversation which needs to be had, but doing so from the context of disabusing bias while being rift with unabused bias muddies the water more than it clarifies it.
Both western religion and western philosophy have made great contributions to today's BINARY mindset. Angel v evil, good v bad, right v wrong, like or dislike, love and hate, ...for example, ......are the fundamental mindsets for western religions. Western philosophy is strikingly similar to the western religion in many respects, i.e., it is basically a vertical and binary type philosophy. Dualism mindset such as determinism v free will, body v mind, etc, is still today's central topics. On the other hand, I haven't found the concepts such as free will, freedom, individualism, etc in Chinese philosophy. This is because according to Chinese monism, there is only one type of the ultimate truth, which is the natural truth. “ 道法自然” means all ultimate truths are natural truths. It is more and more obvious to me that most western naturalism, including some physicists, is fake naturalism The Majority of western naturalists, for example, choose to deny the existence of the free will. This is because they don't dare to include free will in the true natural world.
We still do not understand the basis of our minds. We are physical structures so how does the mind choose to react? Where are the thinking and decision processes located? How do we decide? Scientific thinking is a Western invention and we also use the invented tools on the free will problem.
@@bjrnhjortshjandersen1286 Thanks for the reply. I don't think the reduction based science can figure out how the mind works as it is a wrong direction. For example, nearly all the cognitive scientists doing now is trying to explain the phenomina of mind with some sorts of REGULAR LAWS, i.e., Newton law like laws, or trying to find either explicit or implied deterministic kinds of regularities. In other words, tring to deny or falsify the free will is the preassumption of the western science.
@@JeffChen285 Actually I do think some also try to use self-organizing principles and elements of chaotic systems to explain the existence of the mind. That may be a more probabilistic approach. That mind just like life is a consequence of complexity and flow but in essence selforganizing within a framework. It sounds eastern but is also not really a clear explanation.
@@bjrnhjortshjandersen1286 Human beings would rather to accept the phenomina such as butterfly effect as nautal law without difficulty but refuse to accept free wills at the same time. I think this is because duirng the proccse of anti-religion strugles, the western science has overshoot the runway, i.e., western dualism is way too polarized. For example, one of the central beilievings for western scientists is that ony objective truth is real truth. As because the human beings are foundamentall subjective animals, therefore they often make mistakes. Unfortrunately, there is no such thing in truth natural laws as mistake or unmistake. My current undertanding to the natural law is that the universe is pretty much "free will ready". The diffenrence between non-life rock and life object is that the rock is free without will. Otherwise rock will behave like a deer to be able to against the gravity and entropy to refuse to rolling down a cliff.
@@JeffChen285 I guess you can believe what you want but the strength of the scientific method is it works on a lot of questions due to its reductionistic nature. Religions and much of humanities have a lot of things that cannot really be dealt with. They are not falsifiable. Is there a God? Is there free will? We cannot really tell if we cannot isolate such questions to something which can be dealt with in some experimental form. The map is not the world...but it is a good tool for navigation.
your comprehension ability is pretty fussy! lol It is like someone explain u what is quantum physics, and u ask back :do you mean this world is fussy? actually the really fussy part is your own brain! lol
@@YULI-t1s- Please look up the definition "fussy logic" before you made a common. Fussy logic is a technical term. Rather than strictly binary cases of truth, fuzzy logic includes 0 and 1 as extreme cases of truth but with various intermediate degrees of truth.
Pascal, by refering to Qubits, you have made the concept unnecessarily confusing (though I admit it sounds a lot more chic 🤣) I totally agree with you the fundamental difference of east & west cultures, singularity vs pluralism. The western culture is based on a simple belief of a single god almighty (Christianty / Islam). Those in power own the right to explain what 'god' is, and other religions not same as mine will then become 'false god', and have to be conquered or destroyed. Over the years so many people needlessly died just because of different interpretion of 'God', and some wars are still ongoing. Somehow the Greek philosophies of pluralism was lost. Only black or white remains. The eastern culture is more based on learning from nature, that there can be many gods under different circumstances (China / India). We do not have any 'religious' war in the thousands years of Chinese history. We believe there are many ways to do things right, not just one way (eg Confucious is just one of many philosophies for society. Others philosophies like Taoism, Legalism, Budhism are just as popular and mixed well in China culture though may not as well known by the west). What is causing a lot of problem in east/west conflict now, is how the West is worshiping 'democracy' as their 'God' almighty. And whoever in power owns the right to define what 'democracy' is. Anyone not submitting to 'democracy' are evil, and have to be conquered or destroyed. To Chinese, 'democracy' is just another philosophy of society, which can mix with other philosophies depending on siutations/communities. The key is still the end result, not the method.
Generally the concepts that you put forward do have its exceptions. Western thinkers like Edward De Bono put forward his lateral thinking which is quite similar to a Qubit mindset, which is looking at the whole issues holistically wearing the six thinking heads offering out of this world solutions, and selection one or a few of them which are most appropriate given the current context or environment. Innovators love Debono for opening their minds to view an issue from different lenses thus indirectly challenging theirminds to be more innovative. Maybe deBono concepts are better received in the East than the West as your suggestion generally put that western philosophers are binary thinkers. And you also stated that Chinese thinkers are more result oriented but I think both camps do seek to look at the delivery of a project or the successful implementation of the solution in overcoming an issue. Maybe Chinese lack the capability to be more process driven as my years of experience led me to such deduction. And Chinese do believe in a rule based order but not one that is proposed by a group of nations with similar cultures but more specifically, by an accepted world body like the UN. A good example is the US rule based order where every nation must practice its form of democracy and its version of defined forced labor and genocide. I would like to point out that in any single problem, the Chinese view this more like an open opportunities as it facilitate the development of solutions, which creates employment and use of resources to manage such implementation as well. For example, the coal mine explosions in China, which allows Huawei to use technology to monitor the flow of toxic and inflammable gas within the coal tunnel with prior warning. Obviously this opens up lot of downstream business opportunities for many technology based companies. However, I think the West looks at an immediate solution to patch up the issue and most likely, failed to come up with a long term solution and viewing this generally as potential opportunities. Lastly, the Chinese Qubit mindset allows the Chinese to view the mathematical solutions from various different perspective, exploring every angle exam questions could be re-oriented to test the students. My colleague in varsity do have this extreme Qubit mindset and he always ended up as a high achiever academically since he apply this to every single question, thus preparing himself well to answer every question appropriately. Now you know why most oriental students do so well in Science and Mathematics. Anyway, Pascal you have put in lot of efforts into your mooted "thesis" which generally is correct unless certain academic professors wish to "backtest" your concepts. Wish you all the best in the sale of your book and do have a nice day! Cheerio as always.
Thanks for adding your feedback! I agree the West has many Qubit thinkers, especially in recent history. By reducing a mindset of a population of 1.4 billion people to one concept I am of course generalising, but I still hope it can help the world understand better how Chinese often think different or nonsensical in Western view.
I see some tendencies toward self-promoting the Asian culture in many of the answers. Is it superior? It works in this social context and it has survived. Is it inferior? It used to be less able to innovate in a scientific way....maybe because of the complexity of answers and the importance of relations in thinking. First when adapting the simplistic western scientific thinking the East Asian societies started to develop technologically. So for any kind of problem some tools are more appropriate than others.
The essence of Christianity is binary thinking. It helps people be comfortable with extremes by replacing doubt, uncertainty, fear, and uncomfortable thoughts with faith and prayer. It amplifies ego, where collectivist thinking finds contentment in letting go of it. For example, a soul is fully present at the moment of conception, having the grace of Jesus. Gay marriage is wrong because God hates gays. There's no room for argument, for considering the suffering this extreme thinking causes. Prayer removes doubt, and God makes it right. Because we have souls, each individual is special, separate from all others, having dominion over the world. It's God's gift to His children. Environmental destruction is either impossible or God's plan, so trying to prevent it is either pointless or blasphemy. It's this kind of ego amplification and freedom from thought that makes the US a problem for the world. We see ourselves as blessed and chosen, having and deserving dominion. It's our sacred duty to spread freedom by liberating others from any government that isn't like ours. We can't see ourselves as a part of the world. For that we'd need less ego.
@@JB52520 Do you mean western civilization is Christianity/God's laws based while Chinese culture is Wiseman like Confucius/human teaching based? Western culture is more superior?

中國人受易經、儒家四書中的中庸、道家的道德經... 等影響,易經和道家影響中國人思想是 cycle 如否極太來、冇陽則冇陰而相對卻相互倚賴而轉變... 中庸之道則是非0非1而是 something in between that is most appropriate.
I wish I could give the person his due but he stated 'China can't change the party but can change the system while the West can change the party but not the system.' Let's be frank here, the difference between 1 political party vs 2 isn't a big difference in all honesty
I think this this stereotyping of each side having a mindset is itself a type of binary thinking. Think about what he's saying, for example about the abortion issue. He's boiled it down to a trivial and wrong description of the policy discussion and ignores the fact that the US *already had* a context policy. The whole "Trimester" standard was invented precisely to provide context: legal everywhere and solely the decision of the woman in the first trimester, in the second semester the state could regulate it for health reasons and thus require a doctor signing off on it, and in the third, the state can protect the life of the fetus. The way Pascal ignores all the nuance in the actual abortion debate and makes it a simple absolute binary between "YES/NO" if its allowed, says a lot more about the way he's thinking. Even trying to setup a West vs China dichotomy is "binary thinking" because it presupposes a billion people all think the same way, in both the West and East, and not that there is a diversity of thought and approaches. And all this stuff about reductionism vs holistic thinking, deduction vs induction, is the stuff of cheesy 80s books describing Japan vs the West. It's the same thing all over, and still wrong. You go to any Western philosophy department and they're talking reductionism vs holism, they're invoking David Hume on induction. There is no shortage of synthesis based thinking in the West. You look at all of the recent breakthroughs in AI: Transformers, Reinforcement learning, etc they are all based on inductive approaches. There's been a revolution in AI in the last 5 years, and it is all based on inductive and empirical refinements, with holistic models which often can't be explained or reduced into smaller parts. So much so that explaining why these AI models work is sometimes impossible. That came out of the West. You make an attempt to excuse fly-by-night copying and stealing/cloning IP as "caring more about mastery", but for the most part, most of the Chinese brands that copy Western products feel lower quality, they don't feel like a finely crafted mastery. Apple, for example, continues to refine its craft, year after year. They've mastered build quality. They've mastered packaging. They've mastered the user experience. There's no Chinese produced phone product that feels superior in terms of mastery. Apple was both unique AND mastered. I feel like these are artificial binary dichotomies "unique vs mastery". You can have aspects of BOTH. I'll give you a Chinese company which does this: DJI. Their drones are both unique and masterful. Yes, Parrot AR drone was the first commercial drone, but DJI's Mavic felt like the 'iphone of drones', it felt new and unique when it came out, and its quality, software, controller, user experience, everything felt masterful. Thus I'd say that trying to assign binary categories to the West vs China is kind of an odd self-referential act. I think people are people. And when you get a few hundred million people together, they're going to be diversity of thought. I find trying to pin some over-arching thought system on all of these humans is wrong and far from bringing us together, "otherizes" each other as fundamentally different. Thus this channel is essentially teaching that Westerners and Chinese are irreconcilably different in a way. I think it's bad message. (Plus, the quantum metaphors are kind of bizarre. Qubits only act as qubits if the system is isolated from noise and the environment and prevented from collapse and coherence. ) I'll also add that, I have lived in China, I've been married for 20+ yrs to a Chinese woman, I worked with Chinese engineers and scientists for the last 30 years, and I don't find these stereotypes to apply at all. I've encountered plenty of 'binary' thinking STEM people from the Mainland, who won't admit a middle ground or superposition, or insist there's only one way to do something, or one correct answer. Weibo is full of people making absolutist binary statements. Hell, when it comes to education and how kids should learn, I usually end up being the 'qubit' and my Chinese relatives and wife end up being the 'no, you either do it this way, or your life is ruined and you don't make any money and will be a failure.' My view on education is you do what you are passionate about, what you love, and become a well rounded, flexible person and you'll do well (the liberal arts college view), whereas I find many Chinese relatives often take a vocational approach: education and college is about making money, it's a training program. I think it's a bit of both (hence, be well rounded, take minors in lots of things) because you can't predict what future opportunities will exist. But certainly, that's not universal, and there are Chinese parents who aren't GAOKAO obsessed and send their kids to liberal arts schools.
@@PascalCoppens Sorry if I came off too harsh, I just don't think Chinese and Westerners so alien to each other is right. We have way more in common than differences. For sure, there are cultural differences. I mean, I can tell the difference between Germans vs Spainish/Italians easily in terms of outlook. But the differences aren't as great as I think you made them sound. The Japanese were similarly analyzed like this in the 80s, tons of books came out, almost fetishizing "Eastern" thought to an extent. Zen this, zen that. (Edward Said had a lot to say about Orientalism). We were told all kinds of things by analysts, you see, Japanese were just collectivist, work for group harmony, and Westerners are individualist. Japanese imbue all objects with a spirituality, even inanimate ones, which explains how they make everything cute, etc. And while there may be some truth to that, in the end, Japanese government and business made many of the same practical decisions, and mistakes, that has gripped the West at various times. Because at the end of the day, the core human needs, and the core competitive pressures, and the core social hierarchies, are mostly the same.
zero-covid is a binary western term. there' s no such policy goal in China. everyone just understands that spreading=disaster. so every little disaster is being fought and prevented.
There are mRNA vaccines+boosters which prevent large scale death now. One could argue the quarantines were the right think to do before widespread vaccination could be achieved. But the virus is never going to be eliminated, it will be endemic like the flu. Thus, the lockdowns will never be able to squash the virus. China will be forced to abandon these lockdowns eventually, it's only a matter of time.
Interesting talk but it makes me think you interface more with China big city large scale industry leaders more than small to medium business owners. From my 10 year experience living in China the mindset of the mid to small business leaders/owners is very black and white with very little thinking outside of the box.
I don't see Qubit thinking as only out of the box thinking, but more being able to live with paradoxes. That is the entanglement part. But I agree that Chinese from smaller cities or rural area are more pragmatic in general, but Chinese contextual culture still plays an important role imho. Thanks for sharing.

Good comparison Ken!

Basically chinese culture and mindset are more flexible and pragmatic.
By the chinese thinking if u are not our friend that doesn't mean u are our adversary authomatically. From the chinese perspective there are always a possibility and opportunity.
The western mindset is more like: if u are with us or u are against us (yes or not/ to be or not to be).
this actually shows well if you look at some of our words, our word for crisis is 危机 weiji , 危 is danger, 机 is opportunity.

Thanks Ron!
As Deng Xiaoping said, a good cat is one which can catch a mouse regardless whether it is a black or white cat. Result is important and this helps promote inclusivesness and diversity. Communism has strong bearing on social values unlike the West thinks.
black lives don't mean jack shit in the US...
@@bjrnhjortshjandersen1286 I don't agree Northern Europe can hold that any longer especially after they join NATO. In China the solution is "to restore balance" = education, equals opportunities etc. Seems like it works far better then the US policy/mindset.

Great video! The Chinese concept of Yin and Yang sounds Binary, but in Chinese philosophy, Yin can turn into Yang and Yang can turn into Yin in certain circumstances, now that's Qubit.
True.
Agreed we must evolve beyond binary mindsets, and into a quantum mindset by accepting multiple truths and perspectives.
Cheers

I don’t think the analogy holds up to be honest - binary is two options yes and no a qubit is three no yes and yes/no -
@@mylet2658 Actually, qubit has more than 3 options, it has 1, 0 and *all other values in between.*
@@Shenzhou. thanks for your input My example was using Boolean logic versus computational values - in the end it’s they are the same maxing out the number of options and between two given data points.
Confucianism is the soul of the Chinese culture.
Thanks. I will check how to get it in China. For now, if you buy it on my website, we will ship it from Belgium.
Nicely said!
Perhaps the best explanation ever on the difference in thinking between East and West.

Can we take an open minded moment :
People=share holders, party members = board directors, top leader = CEO ?
Contrast: We in the west, any boo will able to take the top job regardkess if you are a convict, impulsive liar, mentally ill bi-polar person...as long as there's a moment capture the opportunity twisted people mindset vote on you, disregard your ability manage a giant home affair...
completely agreed! as one of the former 'leaders' of the 'free world' once said - you either with us or against us. that says all. LOL!
Indeed
Basic phylosophy in chinese culture is based upon nature science instead of religion
The west got a proverbs, but they never use it. A rolling stone gather no moss.
A good talk.Thank you.
Very enlightening, thank you!
A very interesting analysis and your points are well taken.
Thank you!
What ever my stance may be with the CCP. I am really impressed by the number of Chinese commenting in English. I can def say most Americans are including me cannot do that. Meaning commenting in a language that is not English
That is 100% true. Of course I don't know how many Chinese on my channel live abroad.
Study the history of the party before making judgements
China is a big country.....English definitely is not a working language for most people.
Great share, @Pascal! learned a lot. I also want to say, either thinking in Bianry way or Qubit way, is also binary thinking. :) Just my opinion.
Appreciated and valuable. Thanks
as a Malaysian Chinese kind of agree with what you say. we were told to that the world is not only black and white but also grey.
Thanks for sharing!
The US always think everything is a zero sum game. For me to succeed, others must fail. Other cultures believe in succeeding together.
you are right, and I am also right. we are just different. different doesnt mean wrong.
Right on!!!!
We are told that Confucius is a professional of I-Ching from Literature King Chou who developed Book of QUIBit lottery( 8 trigrams or Ba Qua)
Interesting
China QUBIT mindset rock!
Would you say that China using the FUSSY LOGIC mindset instead of the Westerner’s Binary mindset?
your comprehension ability is pretty fussy! lol
It is like someone explain u what is quantum physics, and u ask back :do you mean this world is fussy?
actually the really fussy part is your own brain! lol
@@YULI-t1s- Please look up the definition "fussy logic" before you made a common. Fussy logic is a technical term. In artificial intelligence (AI) systems, fuzzy logic is used to imitate human reasoning and cognition. Rather than strictly binary cases of truth, fuzzy logic includes 0 and 1 as extreme cases of truth but with various intermediate degrees of truth.
Pascal, by refering to Qubits, you have made the concept unnecessarily confusing (though I admit it sounds a lot more chic 🤣)
I totally agree with you the fundamental difference of east & west cultures, singularity vs pluralism.
Western thinkers like Edward De Bono put forward his lateral thinking
which is quite similar to a Qubit mindset, which is looking at the whole
issues holistically wearing the six thinking heads offering out of this
world solutions, and selection one or a few of them which are most
appropriate given the current context or environment. Innovators love
Debono for opening their minds to view an issue from different lenses
thus indirectly challenging theirminds to be more innovative. Maybe
deBono concepts are better received in the East than the West as your
suggestion generally put that western philosophers are binary thinkers.
And you also stated that Chinese thinkers are more result oriented but I
think both camps do seek to look at the delivery of a project or the
successful implementation of the solution in overcoming an issue. Maybe
Chinese lack the capability to be more process driven as my years of
experience led me to such deduction. And Chinese do believe in a rule
based order but not one that is proposed by a group of nations with
similar cultures but more specifically, by an accepted world body like
the UN. A good example is the US rule based order where every nation
must practice its form of democracy and its version of defined forced
labor and genocide. I would like to point out that in any single
problem, the Chinese view this more like an open opportunities as it
facilitate the development of solutions, which creates employment and
use of resources to manage such implementation as well. For example, the
coal mine explosions in China, which allows Huawei to use technology to
monitor the flow of toxic and inflammable gas within the coal tunnel
with prior warning. Obviously this opens up lot of downstream business
opportunities for many technology based companies. However, I think the
West looks at an immediate solution to patch up the issue and most
likely, failed to come up with a long term solution and viewing this
generally as potential opportunities. Lastly, the Chinese Qubit mindset
allows the Chinese to view the mathematical solutions from various
different perspective, exploring every angle exam questions could be
re-oriented to test the students. My colleague in varsity do have this
extreme Qubit mindset and he always ended up as a high achiever
academically since he apply this to every single question, thus
preparing himself well to answer every question appropriately. Now you
know why most oriental students do so well in Science and Mathematics.
Anyway, Pascal you have put in lot of efforts into your mooted "thesis"
which generally is correct unless certain academic professors wish to
"backtest" your concepts. Wish you all the best in the sale of your book
and do have a nice day!
So for any kind of problem some tools are more appropriate than others.
very simple, look at chinese Kung Fu vs Western Boxing - the way of fighting.........!
China never demands other countries to trust China only respects the differences
Is salvation in Christianity binary thinking or qubit thinking? Or both? Black and white or based on personal relationship with Him?
In my personal experience of Christianity is generally more binary in its explanation.
Not sure! There is purgatory!
@@JB52520 Do you mean western civilization is Christianity/God's laws based while Chinese culture is Wiseman like Confucius/human teaching based? Western culture is more superior?

You can skip first 5 minutes, although I like them.

Very good, very similar to traditional Indian way of thinking
Why dont you write the title"Can we trust the west"?
Someone will write that one day.

China: Maybe, perhaps...let discuss and work it out.
Comparing superposition to the debate on abortion is absolute bonkers
And yet I believe it helps people understand it as this topic is very black-white.
The title of the book is itself a manifestation of western condescension.
I think it is meant to be provocative. This kind of title attracts the attention. Just like Mr Jacques book "When China rules the Worlds".
That is indeed correct. The titel reflects the question most Westerners are asking, or answering negative.

Just a small correction, Pascal. The word is "enlightenment," not "enlightment."

You said if we wants to understand China better we should do this and that but the US is so arrogant and not interested in understanding anyone.
We also need to become more humble indeed.
👍👍
Frankly I must agree…
Qubits only act as qubits if the system is isolated from noise and the environment and prevented from collapse and coherence. )
I'll also add that, I have lived in China, I've been married for 20+ yrs to a Chinese woman, I worked with Chinese engineers and scientists for the last 30 years, and I don't find these stereotypes to apply at all.
As always, great comments. Thanks! Don't have time to go into a debate on this, but would love to have you ask questions on a live stream one day!
Entanglement can be removed by donating to others, this is Buddha's teaching understood by chinese two thousand years ago

zero-covid is a binary western term. there' s no such policy goal in China. everyone just understands that spreading=disaster. so every little disaster is being fought and prevented.
China will be forced to abandon these lockdowns eventually, it's only a matter of time.
the book should be can we trust american?
You seem to have descended from Blaise Pascal, aren’t you?
Blaise Pascal surname was Pascal. It is my first name. ;-) But I did use a picture of his calculator. You spotted that very nicely!
Yep, actually I meant your mental bent is quite like the great mathematician. 😂
historically the west use self reference criterion to look and cast the world. it is time for the west to learn from the east
Thanks ! It would be interesting to hear a Chinese figure mirroring your own and to hear what he suggests for chinese people to try to understand the mechanisms and morals of Western thought, if there is still any left.
So if we cooperated with each other we might get the best of both perspectives? Blasphemy!!
It's either binary or nonbinary dammit. Think what you like as long as you agree.
My mindset on debt, unless I don't have to pay back for it, otherwise I will not consider a loan 😂😂😂😂😂 and please don't borrow money from me, because I have non!
