Having lived in China for 15 years myself, I can attest to Pascal's insight. Guānxì (关系, relationships), 工作单位 (gōngzuò dānwèi, work unit) and 面子 (miànzi, saving face) can do wondrous things when people act for a common cause and purpose. I so admire the Chinese in this regard and the West could do worse than to apply these principles to help solve some of its problems, such as homelessness, drugs, safety, excess profiteering etc. Am not saying these problems would be eliminated but I believe their scale would be vastly reduced.

It's the combination of the *"Red Scare"* _(fear of communism)_ and the *"Yellow Peril"* _(fear of Asians overrunning the West)_ that's fueling anti-China sentiment in the West today. Lots of viewers' comments revolve around the lack of progress or improvement in the West compared to China. You know what, the following quote from the late Deng Xiaoping of China pretty much sums it up for all of us: “The United States brags about its political system, but the President says one thing during the election, something else when he takes office, something else at midterm and something else when he leaves.”

“He took over, and he said: 'If I have to shoot 200,000 students to save China from another 100 years of disorder, so be it.'" - Recalling how former Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping dealt with the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests.”

All growth follows an S-curve or 'logistic curve'. It's not "lack of improvement", it's a slow down in growth when you become developed because exponential or geometric growth cannot carry on forever.
Even so, the West has evolved politically a lot after GDP growth settled down, so for example, Sweden's quality of life and GINI coefficient is a lot better than China.
Moreover, while you see lack of progress, you know what I see? Every major advancement and innovation that launches revolutions, still comes out of the West, not China. Whether it's EUV lithography, of capacitive touch smartphones, or quantum computing, or sexy electric vehicles, or machine learning, or the internet and web, or cryptocurrency, these things tend to get invented in the West, not China. China of course, will take them, and make incremental refinements, but they don't do the fundamental ground work.
And if you really want to look at innovation and speed, look at Elon Musk speed. SpaceX literally built the tallest rocket in human history, attached 29 of the most powerful and advanced engines in the world, over night. They built the town of Starbase in weeks. SpaceX in just a few years had done the Falcon 9, Falcon Heavy, Crew Dragon, and now Starship, plus thousands of Starlink satellites in orbit, plus taking over 60% of the global launch market. There is no chinese equivalent to this. In fact, the closest Chinese equivalent is the building of the Tesla Gigafactory in Shanghai.
Stagnation? As far as I can tell, China is still a substandard manufacturing base for high end technology which is designed outside of China. Up until recently, they couldn't even make ball point pens. Compared with German or Japanese manufacturing? I know Pascal has a different view, but every new industry in the last 10 years that turned into a major new area of trillions in investment, originated in Western labs, universities, or companies, that give people the freedom of though to be creative, rather than a life of studying for the gaokao followed by a life of 996. How you gonna innovative when you have no time for yourself to dream?
To me, the work/life/school balance in China is a major inhibitory factor holding it back, that, and the inability to be a rebel against the established order. All great inventors were rebels of some sort, counter-culturalists of some sort.

Wow, such in-depth analysis! Hats off to you.
I agreed on most points you brought up. No one denies the scientific and technological prowess of the West, especially the US after it absorbed and improved upon the industrial knowledge brought in from European immigrants in 1980s to early 1900s. Thereafter, the technological advance coupled with an abundance of labor propelled the US to the top of the rank of developed countries, especially the manufacturing mobilization for World War II. Too bad the American behemoths moved their manufacturing bases to China in pursuit of higher profits, making it now dependent on products made in China and elsewhere in Asia. A famous American political scientist once said "People, governments and economies of all nations must serve the needs of multinational banks and corporations." The US follows that direction and becomes slave to big businesses.
Substandard or not, China now produces better smartphones at one-third to half the price of comparable American brands. How about 5G now or 6G ten years from now? Why did the US use the power of its government, both executive and legislative, to try to kill off a private company like Huawei? The US boasted about "free trade" and "fair competition" for such a long time. Now is the time to compete fair and square, lest peoples around the world see it as a loser.

    Comment from Pakistan
You are analyzing a social structure using terms and concepts from freshman physics adding some cultural alchemy to it.
The only reason for "China speed" is that the social structure in China has a unity of purpose, which is the development of the life of all the people in China. The social structure in the west has a disunity of purpose of increasing the profit of the elite class on the one hand and a trickle down of economic benefit to the remaining people.
It is this very difference that causes China not only to develop at "China speed" but also without slavery, opium trade and destruction around the world.
Finally the above unity of purpose implies trust and its development as an essential requirement and outcome. Trust on the national level and also on the international level.
In the west the disunity of purpose mentioned above implies distrust as an essential requirement and outcome. Distrust on the national level and also on the international level.
It is this very different social and global purpose that makes the elite class of the U.S.A/West look at China as an "existential threat".

patents don’t correlate directly with innovation
While the explosion of domestic patent applications in China is impressive, this growth does not necessarily correspond with dramatic advances in innovation. Comparing patent applications and grants between countries does not take into account differences in government policies and the domestic regulatory environment. In the case of China, the CNIPA National Patent Development Strategy explicitly equates patent generation with innovation and calls for government incentives to bolster the number of domestically filed patents. This strategy has resulted in CNIPA patents being awarded for small design tweaks and incremental changes versus entirely new inventions. In other words using patents that have been stolen and tweeking them.
China’s IP framework is intrinsically linked with the country’s legal system, solving issues like trade secrets theft, online infringement and political influence and local protectionism via the courts would require a complete structural overhaul. Beijing undoubtedly knows this, which means pledges made in the phase one trade agreement with the United States were at best hollow promises designed to appease Washington.
China’s role in stealing Western companies’ intellectual property is well documented. However, not too many of the victims know what the nation does with trade secrets after they are pilfered, a former U.S. government leader said Nov. 19.
“China has institutionalized a system that combines legal and illegal means of technology acquisition from abroad,” said William Schneider Jr., former undersecretary of state for security assistance, science and technology and former chair of the Defense Science Board.
It’s well known that China steals IP and other secrets from industries, academia and the government, “but what is not so well known is how China converts the technology it acquires into their military capabilities,” he said at the DSEI Japan conference held near Tokyo.
It is first sent to one of China's two dozen advanced science universities. They in turn apply for Chinese patents on the technology. After they are acquired, the government distributes the patents to various companies.1 of the most notable recipients is telecommunications giant Huawei Industries, which has been under the microscope of U.S. regulators as the company attempts to role out its 5G technology.

I like to add one more reason which is part of Chinese 4,0000 years of uninterrupted culture, i.e. the value of society is paramount over individual. Chinese believes that the society must be successful first before individual can benefit from this success. That's why Chinese willingly cooperate to get themselves tested and wear mask when they are instructed to do so because they recognized their individual effort will give rise to the success of the society and ultimately they themselves as individual will benefit from this success.

In the West, we're busy on smearing campaigns. Doesn't put much confidence on future collaboration. Pretty rare to hear good news on China coming from MSM.

The George Massey tunnel is an anachronism from a bygone era and a bridge would be no better!
We have a MUCH BETTER IDEA !!!
Our parent aerospace company (i.e. located in Vancouver and Burnaby!) is pioneering a NEW TYPE of tunnel borer that goes waaaaaay beyond what Elon Musk is doing with his "The Boring Company" -- We are using super-fast multi-material cutting and tailings extraction systems that would be able to cut an underground tunnel in even the hardest rock that is 25 metres (82 feet) in diameter that has enough room for a two-level platform that runs EIGHT (four tracks on each level) double-height high-speed, heavy-weight-cargo-carrying and passenger-carrying MAG-LEV trains plus run various fibre-optic communications bundels and multiple high-current power transmission cables from city to city!
We can cut 24/7 that large tunnel from Vancouver to Kelowna (400 km) in about six months with just ONE MACHINE! We could also do it in only ONE MONTH with six machines!
That tunnel borer would be able cut a new multi-tunnel setup under the Fraser River in just a few days and our prototypes are already in the advanced design and pre-manufacturing stages now so if they want it, some extra funding would get us started that much quicker!

Excellent point about "Speed of Trust" and "fast v. slow" development. I think this argument primarily centers around the West' focus on short-term gains versus China's under-value longer-term strategic advantage.
This theme also centers around the West's philosophy of over-celebrating the "Me" v. Asia's "We". Balancing these counter-weights is critical at a state level.

patents don’t correlate directly with innovation
Huawei “is one of the best examples of this problem,” Schneider said. It has acquired 56,000 5G and artificial intelligence-related Chinese patents despite spending a pittance on research and development, he added.
“It is very important for us to confront and mitigate this problem,” he said.
In addition, a 2014 law passed in China requires any Chinese citizen to cooperate with Chinese intelligence services, he said. There are currently 350,000 Chinese students in U.S. universities, he noted.
“That is unlike anything we have had to deal with in the past,” he added. “The scale of the problem is obvious.”
Schneider displayed a list compiled by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence detailing the myriad ways China acquires intellectual property.
Besides cyber break-ins and traditional spying using human assets, it employs legal means of acquiring technology such as joint ventures, buying companies outright, partnerships with government research institutions, and hiring foreign experts and bringing them to China to work.
Other underhanded means include setting up front companies that obscure its participation and using its laws to give its own companies advantages and foreign companies disadvantages, the list stated.

African Americans who were brought in just to be treated like animals working in the cotton field are still experiencing racial injustice to this day. How deplorable!

Westerners are actually toxic. A month ago, I had enough of westerners, so I cut ties with all westerners. What happened next was amazing. Instantly, my alcoholism vanished. After 50 years of fairly heavy drinking, I just stopped. I didn't even mean to quit. I have no cravings, no dts, no medication, no counseling. Nothing. It just left and now it is as if I never drank at all. I'm still gobsmacked to be honest.
I put the reason down to figuring out the devil's trick. The first part of the devil's trick goes like this. In the west, it is considered a weakness if you can't handle narcissistic abuse. So the devil encourages everybody to abuse one another and so on, and like idiots, we all try to put up with it, especially the men. The second part of his trick is - if you drink, it's your fault. It's not the devil's fault. Again, like idiots, we all nod our head. Yes. It is our fault we can't handle all this abuse and end up drinking alcohol to make us feel better.
Good trick, isn't it? Kills millions each year. Makes everybody miserable. Don't tell anybody, but all they have to do is reject that thinking and instantly, they will feel better. I'm 65, and now spring out of bed each morning and start the day with a set of 100 pushups.

@@Andy-P Germany before being "dragged" into WW1 was a peaceful and vibrant nation, economically and technologically. The masses were oblivious to the agenda of war. It was never hawkish but a proud nation. Germany was a target of jealousy. It "threatened" the existing hegemon.
It did not lose the war over those gang up nations but had to compensate dearly for initiating the armistice. Such unfair & oppressive terms brought much suffering & resentment to the people which eventually gave rise to the nationalistic movement. Whose fault was that?

Great piece of analysis on China speed, it's hard to find a west youtuber who understands the Chinese society and culture so well. As someone who lived in China for 20+ years, I agree with 90% of what you said. Unfortunately, most of west politicians won't think the same way, they are much more interested in short-term profit, manipulating the global competition, getting re-elected in the next election and other selfish goals. They won't learn from China, some might try to copy the Chinese economy model but will likely to fail, collaborating with China is often not in discussion. Many believe oppressing China's growth or destroy China is a better option, even at the cost of their own citizens well being.

      Concentration camps for Uighur Muslims.
Opening flood banks to poorer areas when it's flood season.
Welding doors/gates shut due to corona and not because they know they have it but because 1 person in the building had it. Then they don't give them any sort of food so they are most likely to starve to death.
When a tunnel is being flooded the person operating the gates at the other end is still not opening the gates so that people can quickly escape and eventually will make most of them drown.
Make up a fake person and claim he's a doctor in another country to spread lies about Covid.
And the list could go on and on and on. China is not a country you want to WORK with until they stop doing all of these horrible things to their people.

With such a huge population, Chinese people have to work more than doubly fast just to stay within reach of competition and Pascal you right there! As such they can see through the advantages of HSR and surely they will keep an eye on the mighty fast freight trains in North America though the challenge is a lot tougher since this linkage involves so many other countries within the Eurasian landmass. I can see that a "straight" line rail link from China via Kazakhstan via Russia can actually reduce the delivery time to within a week! Let's wait and see then!
