The Hardest Choice You’ll Ever Have to Make - Bishop Barron’s Sunday Sermon

  • Friends, in our first reading today, we find ourselves face-to-face with an awful story which seems to harshly juxtapose God’s loving nature with an appalling request: that Abraham sacrifice his own son. We should not read this as a story about the arbitrary and capricious “testing” of Abraham, but rather as a story about the ordering of our love-and this is why it is important that we contemplate it at the beginning of Lent.

Also, compare what God asks Abraham to what God himself sacrificed for us. God stopped Abraham short of sacrificing his only son, while God, in turn, sacrifices his only beloved son for us. And that is the measure of his love for us!

The Father didn't sacrifice the Son. We humans did.

Indeed the parallels between “only begotten son”, through whom a great nation would be born (Israel/the Church), the fact that Isaac is carrying the wood for sacrifice as Christ carried the cross, and even the ram who’s head was caught in the thicket as Jesus was given a crown of thorns, these parallels are very enlightening.

@@rickmedinac The Father sent the Son into the world knowing that we would kill Him. It was a sacrifice on the Father's part and goes to show how great (and truly incomprehensible) God's love, for us sinners, is.

    Word.
There are many parallels between this story and that of Jesus:
    1) Abraham about to sacrifice his only son - God sacrificed His only Son
    2) Isaac carrying the wood for the sacrifice up the mountain - Jesus carrying His cross up Mount Calvary
    3) Isaac obeying Abraham without knowing he was to be the intended victim of the sacrifice - Jesus obeying God the Father knowing He was the victim
    4) Isaac not making a fuss once he was bound on the altar and it became clear to him what was going on - Jesus not complaining even once during His Passion
The place where Abraham was to sacrifice Isaac, Mt. Moriah, is where Jerusalem was later built, and became known as Calvary. Many have speculated that the exact spot of Abraham's altar is where Jesus was crucified.

I may add that the ram caught in the thicket is a Christ figure as well, just as Christ’s head was caught in a crown of thorns (not to mention how it prefigures the levitical law of sacrificing spotless lambs.)

I have always loved God, although my human existence makes me confused about him , but I always love him . Through my questions and confusion regarding so many injustices in this valley of tears I still and always run to my God. It’s an innate desire to always run to him when this life throws it’s worst sufferings at me. When my husband was not recovering from heart surgery , I ran to him and asked , “please take my husband into your kingdom “. There are so many questions I have in this gorgeous , sad and tortured world, yet I continue and always will run to Him. Lord help us I feel and fear our world is in grave danger. Thank you Bishop Barron for your service, your guidance. God bless you.

This story shakes me up to how much not only Jesus suffered in the passion and the crucifixion for us but also the great suffering of God Himself who sacrificed His only begotten son for us. This is how much God loves us. This is how much we must love God. An angel stopped Abraham in the nick of time. Thanks to the mercy of God. Yet, no one stopped at the crucifixion. We did not show mercy to God! We need to repent everyday and pray to learn to give love and mercy.

Also, the wood that Isaac (Means "Laughter" in Hebrew) carries for the Sacrifice, foreshadows the wood of the Cross and the Ram caught in the thicket of thorns, foreshadows the Crown of Thorns. Also a Ram (Spotless Male Sheep) was the Offering for a Serious Sin to the Priests at the Temple on Mount Zion in Jerusalem. Could this Incident have Happened hundreds of Years before at the spot where the Temple was built? Possibly, Peace and Blessings, John, So. Missouri ✅🎆⛪

When you love God first, it becomes the lens and purifying filter of how you see ,, perceive and love. So in loving God first you learn to love others through, with , in, for God

Here is another way to view the Akedah; In rabbinical tradition, Isaac, at the time of binding, is taken to be 37 years old, and Abraham 137. Scripture simply says, "...Abraham built the altar and arranged the wood and bound Isaac, his son, and placed him on the altar upon the wood." No struggle, no resistance on the part of Isaac. He had to be totally in compliance with being bound and the idea of himself as a sacrifice through an incredibly strong faith in both his Father and, ultimately, in God. Isaac is saying through his willingness to comply, "Your will Lord and God, not mine."

In my faith journey, I have left a place where the measure of my love of God moved on the scale of feelings and spiritual sentiment. I now live in place where my faith is the fragile envelope of my doubts held firmly in my naked hands that I hold out to God in whom I trust fully. Christian Catholic faith is a for-adults-only-with-a-child’s-heart business. From where I stand in my faith journey, there is something raw and cold in my faith in God in that it is not the result of a feel-good movie. My model: Mary’s love of her child for God’s sake when Simeon says (I paraphrase): « And a dagger will pierce your soul ». She doesn’t respond with words, she carries on, no cinema, no melodrama.

Bishop Barron: For children of the severely mentally ill, this is a particularly devastating story because we have lived it in our own homes. My father slid into paranoid schizophrenia when I was three years old and my last sibling was born. My father was a devout Christian and taught me to love Jesus but psychosis renders a mind scrambled in thinking. Many children do fear actually being killed by a psychotic parent in a psychosis of fervent religiosity. Please address this story of Abraham and Isaac around this reality in the lives of actual children in our country. Thank you. God Bless and Happy Easter. (so Abraham sounds psychotic to me.)

If your teaching was only the quote from St Augustine, it would be powerful teaching, well worth hours of meditation. I find so much of Scripture is asking the probing question, "Do you love Me more than these?" Then, as part of the circle of grace you mentioned several sermons ago, "Feed my sheep." Great sermon causing me to ask myself probing, but necessary, questions.

Amen and Amen! The entire Bible calls us to a deep soul grabbing love of God so that obedience becomes the very least we can do and not a burden at all. Sacrifice, pain, suffering, grief, etc become secondary to our love for God.
When we understand this we experience true freedom to be everything God calls us to be and we fully are able to love our neighbor.
Anytime you hear someone spout off “the Bible teaches us to love our neighbor or the golden rule” , stop them and teach them that it ALWAYS first teaches us to love and obey God FIRST. Any other formula ends up where we are now. Where love of self and every idol imaginable comes and replaces God.
    God help us all.

God not only asked Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac, He asked it AFTER He had asked him to send away his other son Ismael. In a sense He was asking Abraham to stretch his faith in God's promise to the limit. But the way that God had made Abraham wait before Isaac was born surely helped him to trust that God has marvelous ways that we don't grasp at the moment, but which always turns out to be best in the end

Thank you so much. I listened to this vis-a-vis Andy Stanley's book Irresistible. Your explanation is, I think, much clearer. I thank God for you and your work. I remember a conversation with a physician who had a theology degree from Princeton and he was an atheist. I asked him why and he responded with this story. I told him that it depends on your "presuppositions". Your answer was kinder, more truthful and real. Thanks to our Father.

It’s really amazing how much Abraham had to go through. God promised Abraham, he even made a covenant in the flesh, that he would become a father of a multitude, and yet his first child was with a concubine and his relations with his wife were unfruitful until old age, beyond Sarah’s child bearing limit, and even when he does have a child God requests he sacrifice his only begotten son who he loves. It reminds me of Luke 12:48: “To whom much is given, much will be required.” The amount of faith that Abraham had as a grace of God was why something like this could happen, and it applies to us as well, how to us who have been most graced by God, much harder will your calling be. God never gives you anything you cannot handle.

"3 Early the next morning Abraham got up and loaded his donkey. He took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. When he had cut enough wood for the burnt offering, he set out for the place God had told him about. 4 On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance. 5 He said to his servants, “Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you.”
I struggled with this story for years before I noticed what Abraham said to his two servants: "...we will come back to you." i.e. Abraham and Isaac will return. Abraham's understanding of God is that God will keep his promise and his trust is such that, he believes, whatever happens, that both he and Isaac will return.

And on top of that, when Isaac asks where the sacrificial sheep was, Abraham says God will provide one. Later, just after Abraham’s hand was stayed, they of course find a ram caught in a thicket.

One theory is that Isaac was close to 30 when he went with Abraham carrying the wood for his own funeral pyre. He and Abraham had walked with God their whole lives, Abraham for over 90 years . Together, they had complete faith that God would keep His promise to Abraham even if it meant raising Isaac from the dead.
