This was a positive scene in the movie which told the story of an up and coming rock star. Oscar winning level performance by Elvis - yet he would never get an award from them because Elvis was considered an enemy of parents and older people of the era because of the music he sung and his passion to be inclusive of all races.
I saw this in real time and when he came on screen in the theater girls started screaming right in the theatre it was crazy. this was a cute movie, and showed you the way jails were in the 50's of course this was a county jail not prison. But Elvis plays a real bad boy which he pulled off even with his baby face. A movie you can still watch with the kids. Just plain fun.. thanks Pluto and be blessed.
Elvis Stared in 31 Movies and Jailhouse Rock was one of them. This Preformance was Considered the First Music Video. Both of the Movies Jailhouse Rock 1957 and King Creole 1958 (2 of his Best) are Dark Musicals, meaning they have serious subject matter with Music included. They are both for rent on TH-cam.
The most charismatic singer entertainer and humanitarian ever. No one today can match his brilliance. No auto tunes back then and if there were, he didn't need it 💕
Thanks for your reaction. Elvis was born on January 8, 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi, in a 2 room shack of a house his dad built with money he borrowed from his boss. That's how dirt poor they were. He was one half of identical twins; the other boy - Jesse Garon - was stillborn. They were so poor, that Jesse Garon was buried in a shoebox in an unmarked grave. At Graceland they have a plaque with his name on it in his memory. Elvis always got along with the black community and learned a lot about music from his friends of color. Also, according to the one drop rule, Elvis would not be considered white, since he has Cherokee ancestors on both the Smith (his mother) and the Presley (his father) sides of the family. His paternal grandfather, Jesse Dunning Presley, was not happy that his two sons, Elvis' father Vernon and his brother Vester, married two sisters, Gladys and Clettes who were known to have Cherokee blood in their family tree. J.D. Presley was quite the racist a-hole, often drunk and a philandering husband to Minnie Mae (they were actually separated long before they finally divorced in 1954) who was always competing with his sons Vester and Vernon and who was known to abuse his kids when drunk. J.D. was was publicly against race mixing and was in denial about the Cherokee blood in his own family tree. It was more publicly known that the Smith family had Native blood in their family tree, so when both his sons fell for 2 Smith sisters and Vernon, on top of that, was still a minor at 17 when he eloped with Gladys who was 4 years older than him, Jesse was totally pissed off. As a child, Elvis already had many friends in the black community at the time his family was one of 4 "white" families that lived in the predominantly black neighborhood The Hill, just across from Shake Rag. His childhood friend Sam Bell said that some of the (black) kids in that neighborhood had lighter skin than Elvis (th-cam.com/video/LrFCyNMvZWk/w-d-xo.html). One of Elvis' bodyguards once said that he thought it was a miracle Elvis got into Humes High School in Memphis, because it was "lily white". Elvis wanted to be more open about his Native ancestry, but his manager "colonel" Tom Parker (real name Andreas van Kuijk) was against it because he was afraid it might cost Elvis fans (and himself money). They did have Elvis play characters in his movies though where he had Native American blood (Flaming Star, G.I. Blues, Stay Away Joe). Once Elvis had his own (apprentice) job learning to be an electrician, he saved up his money and bought his clothes in the same style that many of his friends of color wore. He was called a (forgive me, just stating facts here) "n-lover" and got beaten up several times too. Later, when he was an established star, he would not perform at places where the members of color of his back-up band/orchestra weren't allowed.
Check out King Creole. One of Elvis favorite movies he did. Has several good songs. My favorite is the beginning clip with the venders singing about gumbo and parsnips. Elvis duet at the start of the movie with Kitty White is so beautiful. The young Elvis is so relaxed and cheerful. Love the bluesy sound of New Orleans. Also, Elvis performs the title song King Creole.
No its not glorifying prison, its a movie u should watch it ,u wont be disappointed. Its a serious movie.i recommend u checking it out. Its a serious movie please show the movie.
Nice reaction. One thing you must remember is that in those days 50 years+ we didn't concentrate on the words like nowadays or analyse why do this say this etc. Simpler age we just got out and danced to a beat with in my case girls who mostly could do a lot better.😊😊
Elvis has been in over 28 movies. "Jail House Rock" is one of Elvis's early movies from 1957 and it was one of his hit songs. The footage you just watched is a trailer for the movie. In 1957 the movie writers and people of that time and era would NEVER thought about glorifying jail or prison. It's the people of today that are damage and broken that would glorify those types of institutions.
It's a movie and another huge hit. It is another muti-multi-multi million selling hit and staying on the charts at #1 for several weeks . In '56 and '57 he had several to do this. Breaking ALL kind of records, which started with Heartbreak Hotel!!!!
Elvis wanted to be taken serious as an actor and take on strong roles in good movies. Unfortunately he was undercut as those in power that understood by just having Elvis in a movie guaranteed ticket sales so it was not necessary to expend cost on better$ scripts, crew$, cast$ etc etc. In other words they could go cheap on quality because they were still going to make money by just having Elvis in singing a few songs. I wish Elvis had the fortitude to stand up and demand otherwise but he didn’t. A few exceptions are movies King Creole and his first Love Me Tender. He actually did real good on a serious role in Love Me Tender. So he proved he had the ability for serious acting.
Very entertaining movie about a young man who serves time for a death in a bar fight. While in jail his musical ability is revealed and after he serves has time he goes on to make it big in showbiz. Elvis did a fine job of acting and the music was outstanding. Jailhouse Rock, check it out.
Jailhouse Rock is the first movie ineber saw of Elvis and got me hooked as a fan at the early ahe if ten. I knew i loved Elvis soon as this scene came on. Im still rocking to him at age 29.
Now why not compare this rehearsed, choreographed version to his '68 comeback special stand-up version center stage th-cam.com/video/87N6Qa0D7KY/w-d-xo.html; it's just 1:50 min. so maybe you can follow it w-another great one from '68 Blue Suede Shoes th-cam.com/video/Ak5KEbi8Nac/w-d-xo.html only 2:50 min. long -- both songs total only 4 min. for 2 rousing performances w-Elvis free to do what he did best. While Elvis did have input to the dancing in this film version, it was choreographer Alex Romero who directed the dancing & famous dancer Gene Kelly was on the set to have some input. Romero wasn't given on-screen credit for this but was later written up in Variety magazine. Romero went on to choreograph 3 of Elvis’ films: Clambake (1967), Double Trouble, (1967) and Speedway (1968). (new sub - thanks)
It probably does glorify jail, but what people will do for money and publicity is insane. Look what a lot people glorify these days. Our pastor always says what people will do for money, they won't do for God!!!!
Can you see how MJ “stole” from Elvis. Elvis had Graceland, MJ had Neverland. Elvis dancing, white socks. Elvis had a chimp named Scatter, MJ got bubbles. Fans named Elvis the King of Rock N” Roll, MJ named himself the King of Pop and got Elizabeth Taylor to introduce him as such. MJ married Elvis’s daughter to have a link with Elvis, thank God she woke up and didn’t have that manipulative man’s children. Not exactly a good reason to marry someone, is it? The house MJ died in (Not Neverland but the one in Beverly Hills) was right across the street (directly across the street too) from Elvis’s Beverly Hills home. MJ told Lisa he would die the same way her father died. Elvis’s entire career was 23 years long minus the two for the army, MJ’s was 30 years long and Elvis still sold more records. 😊
That was when the King was at his very best. Although he was, by that time, already addicted to uppers and downers, which started when he was in the army to help young soldiers cope with the rigid army life, there were no worrying signs that the drugs were affecting his performance. But he admitted to having difficulty sleeping. I only get 3 - 4 hours he said in an interview in 1957.. However, things did get worse. He took drugs like kids eat sweets.Elvis carried his drugs everywhere he went. When he met Priscilla his first offering was 'the pills' as he called them. And we now know how they impacted negatively on his health also. For Elvis, the fact that they were prescribed by a doctor meant they were harmless. To a point he was right. But he abused them. His life stopped like a car stops when you brake sharply. Sad.

You can tell Elvis was pitched to white America. Where are the black people in prison in this video?
