- I got back yesterday from the Greek island of Kefalonia, where I spent a week with my husband in a villa in the North of the island.
This is just a quick record of the sketches I did whilst there.
I'll be making a more detailed travel video later, as this one just doesn't do justice to the beauty and variety of the island. We had a wonderful week in this marvelous place!

What a lovely painting Helen, you really are taking the mix media technique to a different level. A good day to you and to the community!
Thanks so much!!
👋 Ohhhh Helen. Told my hubby Helen’s back from Greece! The blues you captured in the ocean were yummy. How nice the watercolor dried so cooperatively. That bay we saw from above was stunning! Your minimal kit seemed to serve you well. Before I began watching I was chatting with hubs about how arting while traveling adds a richer level of connection with the location because of the observations we make to create. [very similar to my biology/science background]. Later the art brings back the sounds of the waves, birds, wind, & the warmth of the sun. Now w/such handy phones, we have easy video to make more art in the studio. Such a lovely, generous sharing of your arting on vacation. I hope you enjoyed yourself as much as I enjoyed the video. Thank you 🙏 thank you…never been to Greece so really looking forward to the travel vlog 💜🤗💜
Haha! I'm very flattered!
It's funny - I had the exact same conversation with my husband - I said that it didn't even matter how my pictures turned out, but that painting them has connected me so much more closely with what I saw.
We both thoroughly, totally enjoyed ourselves - thank you!
It looks so lovely and quiet. How wonderful to visit without crowds. Your art is stunning. Thank you for sharing!
It was blissful! Thanks!
Thank you for sharing your holiday and work - I really enjoyed it all. Lovely to be anywhere without people, but gorgeous water and views.
Yes, it was all just perfect!
Oh it looks like you have had a wonderful vacation holiday with your husband/family! Those paintings are all quite gorgeous & the views everywhere, especially from your villa were spectacular vistas! Definitely looks so peaceful to visit before the summer rush of visitors begins! Thanks for sharing this wonderful video.
Thanks so much! Yes - we felt super lucky with everything!
What a beautiful spot for a vacation and so much gorgeous scenery to paint! I love all of your paintings!! The stylized painting turned out really well.
We were so lucky with it all, it was wonderful!
Beautiful looking place. Looks like a lovely peaceful, holiday
It really, really was! We felt very lucky.
How lovely to be in Kefalonia without the crowds and still have warm weather! I see the sunken boat on 'Smugglers Beach' has finally gone. Your sketches are wonderful, and such a lovely way to remember your visit.
It was our first time there, so we don't know any different, but it was definitely lovely in all ways!
Beautiful paintings and scenery! The water is so blue wow😮
Thanks! Yes, the water didn't look real!
Unbelievable, how stunning these images are both the footage and the artwork itself. I had trouble picking which ones I liked the most. They all seem to be fighting for first place. However I did find it interesting that one of my top favourites happened to be the one you didn’t really like from your balcony. I love the way you did all the differentgreens And how you could tell that they were different plants and shrubs while still remaining expressive. I’m also not one for architecture. At least I can admire it but I’m not great at doing it myself. I really like the one you did from the harbour to.
You're very kind - thank you!
Thanks for sharing glimpses of your holiday! Your painted memories are absolutely wonderful!!
The colours on the island were just so gorgeous!
Wonderful and peaceful 👍🐨
It really was!!
Your trip looked amazing and Kefalonia looks really beautiful. Thanks for sharing your lovely paintings :)
Thank you!
I really liked the painting you didn’t like:) The different shades and textures in the greenery were lovely. I liked the stylized one a lot too.
Thanks for sharing all the beautiful scenery! It was so peaceful looking at the water in the beach.
Thanks ever so much!
What a wonderful vacation spot, Helen, and I love your artwork too! I've always thought Greece would be a lovely place to visit one day...but I'm a Canadian on a budget so am happy I get to enjoy it vicariously through you, lol.
Aww, thanks! Maybe one day!!
Wow these are absolutely stunning 😍 the beaches, landscapes, villages and the paintings.
Thanks!
Aww What a peaceful time to visit Kefalonia, gorgeous. Your paintings were wonderful!😍 Thank you for the vlog.😍
Thank you! We couldn't believe it was so quiet!
Beautiful sketches Helen, of a beautiful place ❤ How I would love to be sitting on one of those beaches now, gazing out to sea 😊
I felt exceptionally lucky to enjoy the warmth (after our endless wet winter) and those colours!!
Wow! Beautiful! Your sketches are wonderful.
Thanks so much!
Helen, you are an INCREDIBLE artist. The footage in this video was breathtaking....I REALLY enjoy your style and this channel. Thank u😊😊😊
That's so generous of you - thank you!! 😊
What a beautiful place and lovely artwork. Reminded me of my trip to Rhodes last year where I painted plein air for the first time, its such a lovely way to capture the memories of sights and sounds whilst sketching. I could feel the warmth of that sun.
Thank you! Yes, it's definitely a different way to experience a place when you paint it!
Looks like you had a fabulous time. Thank you so much for sharing. As always your sketches are fabulous. Xx
Thanks ever so much!
Beautiful paintings, love the yacht you captured so well.
Thank you!!
What a stunning island ☺☺
I find it interesting how you said it’s not completely accurate about your painting . I hear that a lot from artist and the way I see it if we wanted an accurate picture you could just take a picture what you want is the feel of the place and an interpretation that’s the fun of being an artist, and creating traditional work in my humble opinion, being accurate, while definitely being a skill set of enormous talent, it’s never been the same to me as non-realism.
You're right! I guess I should worry less about that!
What a lovely place and absolutely magnificent views. You did a fabulous job of capturing those views. Well done and will definitely provide wonderful memories. Looking forward to seeing your video on the trip.
Thanks ever so much!
These are so lovely, what a great holiday activity
Thank you!
Really enjoyed those lovely photos/ films of Greece, I travelled there in my youth, my memories of the people & places are still very positive! So, glad you enjoyed your trip, like your paintings, the blues in Greece seem SO Blue! Thanks.
How cool! Yes - it was a wonderful place, and the colours were bliss!
Lovely art memories of your Greek trip, so much more meaningful than photos! Particularly like the stylised painting which I think is very clever.
I really like the stylised one too. Once you see it, it really works.
Thank you both!
Welcome to Greece 🇬🇷 Happy Easter
Thank you kindly!
Hi Helen , Lovely pics ,lovely memories , and what amazing light quality . Good to see you are enjoying your break , you are actually missing some gorgeous West Country weather , warm rain and warm gales , very high tides washing the quays , bet you can't wait to get back !! Safe travels , Helen . Mike in Exeter xx
Haha! I heard! We left one of our sons home alone for the first time and he had to contend with power cuts, no internet and the fence blew down!
@@helencryer Don't worry Mum and Dad , when these things happen we realise how our kids are no longer kids but can cope with stuff as well as we can . Mike in Exeter xx
So lovely to see this, thanks.
Thanks!
So beautiful and inspiring!
Thank you!
5:47 Really nice! It looks nice with the houses not painted.
I think I preferred it at that stage too!
Gorgeous paintings!
Thanks!!
Hi Helen, the paintings are lovely! The stylised one is great too, so different, reminds me of Claris Cliff. Sorry, probably spelled wrongly but you know who I meant I’m sure. Glad you had a good holiday and thankyou so much for sharing xx
I do! Thanks ever so much!
I love the splodge, then when you added the pen, I really liked the painting. The colored pencil was the cream on top! The way you did the pebbles from the first painting came out wonderfully. I also liked the painting from your villa, the cool crisp looking pool below the wild looking trees in the distant, just perfect. The long landscape of the harbor was gorgeous (would have liked to see the cat painted), I love how you add the painting over the drawing just right so it's not too heavy.
I got to thinking however, how would the paintings turn out differently if you used the ocean water for your painting instead of fresh water. I'm curious how it would affect the painting (I know you can't dump the water back in the ocean after you've finished). When you got some sand stuck to the bottom of one of your paintings, that's when I decided to write this; would make for a very beachy, sandy painting hehe
Keep up the beautiful work!
Thanks so much for your kind words!
That's so funny though - at one point that occurred to me too about using the sea water! I didn't do it there, but I live next to the sea, so should try it out next time I paint here!
You’re amazing at landscapes Helen! Is this just natural or have done a lot of landscapes in your life? I’m really terrible at them jeje.
That's really kind of you! I started doing landscapes about 2-3 years ago, after I moved to Cornwall and loved the scenery so much that I wanted to try and paint it.
This was such a lovely and calm video! Was the water warm? Did you find any sandy beaches? :)
Thanks! No, the sea was really cold! (Not as cold as the UK sea at the moment, but maybe what it's like in the summer.) I think the beaches get more sandy towards the South of the island.
@@helencryer I want to go back to Greece, it was the closest to my home country beaches in Venezuela. Nice and toasty as well! Please share more of your art! Maybe you should make a zine, your sketches are beautiful.
Hi 😊
Hello young man!
Hi Helen,
Thanks so much for yet again a mouth watering travel video 🙂
I have been wondering, and I guess you might have a lot of experience in that area...
I'm going to be travelling to Japen in 2 weeks, and I'm going to take a set of watercolors with me. I'm just debating in my head whether I need to pack them in my big suitcase, or if I can keep them in my hand luggage, so that I could potentially paint while on the plane (it is after all a 13-hour flight)...
Did you have any issues with a watercolor palette (mine is half-pans filled with tube paints) when going through the safety screenings (in terms of them being considered 'paste' or liquids or something?
I have several Daniel Smiths, and they dry up nicely, but my Sennelier paints stay very creamy and I'm afraid I'm going to get into trouble for them being considered 'cream or paste' ?
What is your experience/advice?
Thanks 🙂
I've flown a few times now with a metal palette of half pans (including a couple of Senneliers that hadn't fully set) in my hand luggage, and I've not had any trouble. I didn't put them in a clear bag with the rest of my small liquids, just kept them in my rucksack. No one's queried them at all, though that's not a guarantee that they won't in the future, I suppose!
@@helencryer Oh that's great to know :-) Thanks so much for your reply!
👋🏼. How can you enjoy a beach made of stones and pebbles? 😂
Not as good as my Cornish beaches, but the good weather and colours made up for A LOT!!
@@helencryer Glad you enjoyed the weather and the painting.
Thanks!
