    PS I love this video. It’s direct simplicity and the wisdom of being ok w some time away on your vacation, as that’s one of the things that drives you and that makes a vacation what it is for you. IN ADDITION TO BEING W YOUR FAMILY! because I think when you have a bit of time to yourself to get those parts of you taken care of, you’re them more present w your family and can devote all of yourself during the times you’re with them, undivided! 👏🏻👏🏻

    I’ve brought my art supplies on so many trips and so many times just brought them back home without using them. Seeing you having kids and making it happen helps me see that it is possible. I will find my holiday within the holiday next time. I love your work!

      Ahh thank you. Trust me, I’ve done that a lot of times too. I just feel it’s ok not to draw if we don’t get the chance. We sometimes put too much pressure on ourselves and the trip. Glad the video gave you some ideas. ☺️🫶🏽

    Maybe it’s just me but having a sketchbook has made me way over focus on all the details I used to overlook. Like your sand, falling from your hands, I cannot go anywhere now and see just the largest details, the focal points. I can’t unsee the feathers and insects, the tree bark and the fading paint on old vehicles. I can’t miss the old layers of paint on parking lots and street corners. I hear birds and sirens and shop doors opening and closing. I feel the sunshine as it fades on winter days and summer days alike. And I smell vanilla and cinnamon, horses, soil and barnwood. I smell the creosote of Al all the railroad tracks and imagine the old rail cars being moved around by the up and down motion of arms and backs in olden days of laying track across the countryside. Nothing is ever going to be the same. Memories involve all the senses and it takes more time to travel than it ever used to. ❤️🦋

    Especially with the sketchbooks. The sketchbooks that are shared (on youtube and pinterest) I feel everyone is afraid to share their "ugly art" but it is just as important because it shows the process of the artist.

    • @parularora

      I really understand where you are coming from. But I also know, as artists we do want to share work that we are proud of. It’s a nuanced subject, thot is often not easy to show with a static image in the case of IG. I think YT gives people spaces to have better discussions. I mean if you think about it, back in the day before the internet we would only see Artist’s finished works in galleries and exhibitions. We didn’t get to see any of their behind the scenes and how work went into creating those works of arts. I feel the more we talk about these topic’s without judging and be consider both sides, the more we’ll be able to understand this. I hope you get where I’m coming from. Thanks for reaching out here. I really appreciate it. ☺️👍🏽

    Love this! I was away for two months with a newborn and 3 year old. I packed all my art materials and had many expectations for myself. I only drew four times total and realized that I was more able to actually draw if I had one or two materials…but even then, it was a total struggle with kids! I’d love to hear from artists on how they juggle being a creator when they have little ones :)

      Thanks so much! And thanks for sharing your experience! It’s so so hard. Especially when they are so little. So please don’t be too hard on yourself. It’s temporary and they will become more independent and you will get your time back. I used to draw when my son napped and then he stopped napping. Hahaha the guilt I carried when I get some time to myself and I’d sit at a blank page wasting this precious time, wondering what to draw. That’s when I started playing with colour. Remember any play in your sketchbook is not a waste. Nothing goes to waste. Even bad drawings. 🫶🏽🫶🏽

    Lovely video and great advice! I have never documented my trips in my sketchbook before. I only wished to, and didn't know where to begin, and I was intimidated by the commitment. So instead, I'd just travel as usual and return to drawing when my trip was over. I will be travelling again soon and I really wish to start my first ever travel sketchbook and feeling uneasy, this video has given me a new perspective and now I'm very excited!

    I'm about to go on vacation and I was just lamenting about which supplies are the most important to bring, so your video is finding me at the absolute best time. I guess I won't bring all 300 colored pencils with me ...
    I got advice recently that I should consider my vacation drawings as sketches to prep for a final piece that I can finish at home, that way I never need to feel like they need to be perfect.

    • @parularora
      @parularora  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hahahaha yes I am always trying to take more than I will ever need! I think I realised that I now, only take that tiny pencil case. But what I meant is I also take this tiny case and keep it with me at all times and only take more stuff if I know I’ll get a chance to draw. And I love the idea of thinking of the travel sketches as prep! I’ll definitely remember that.

    • @parularora
      @parularora  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you so much. I can totally relate to the shyness part. I now don’t worry about people watching me draw, but in the beginning it was really hard as I was unsure of my work and was still figuring out my drawings and didn’t really want an audience. I started off by still away from the crowd or in the corner of a cafe so that no one could see what I was doing. I also always have my headphones on and listen to an audiobook or podcast and I’d get so engrossed in what I was listening that I would stop being conscious about my surroundings and stop worrying about the people around me. I really appreciate your thoughts and perspective here! 🙌🏽💛

      I went to Rome last year and wanted to draw but there were just too many people and not enough places to sit. I think taking video and then screenshotting a part in the video to draw is also a good tactic, especially when things are too crowded

    Love your paintings. I have spent the last 10 days in Laos and brought two sketchbooks and many supplies. I have ended up using a little pocket notebook, pencil, and a tiny watercolor kit exclusively. It took me a few days to get over the fear of missing something by not using all the supplies or whatever but the simplicity of pencil and paper made it more easy to do things quicker and easier. I also take lots of photos so I have plenty references later on.

    Definitely face them. Thanks for the tips❤ love ur work. Many times end up not making art at all which is a disappointment in itself. • @parularora

      Soo true! But I think we need to give other creators a break. If they can manage to create amazing art all the time while travelling or only want to share the best of their work, then so be it. It’s understandable, we all want to put our best foot forward. It’s up to us to recognise what our capabilities are, how to embrace all the different aspects of being an artist and also to take everything we see on social media with a big pinch of salt! 🫶🏽

    Love this and I'm loving the Holbein Cake gouache set that you recommended. My remedy for travelling with someone who can't sit still when we're on holiday and who doesn't draw, is to keep it light and use things that dry quickly or just get an ink sketch down and worry about adding the colour later. I try to look out for opportunities where I can sit somewhere and he can go do his thing.

    This is edited so well and the lessons are really important for artists to hear again and again. Well done! As a person trying to document my creative process as well, letting go of those expectations is extremely helpful. Love this video

    Been super looking forward to seeing this, your videos are amazing Parul! These are such great tips too, not only for travel sketching but I think for illustration and observational/on location drawing in general! I haven’t travelled in a long time, but have begun doing a few more observational drawings and relinquishing the idea of ‘perfect’, and then I at least have the idea down on paper and can potentially be tweaked and done again, as you rightly said, it doesn’t have to end! Thanks for sharing thus, always love your videos (and work in general!)

    Thank you for this video! It was so beautiful and extremely helpful! I’m off to Japan next month and have been flip-flopping between taking all the art materials and just a few. You make a great case for the latter

      Omg how amazing!! Have a fab time! I’m so jealous. If I were you I’d carry very little art materials and buy them all from there! All my favourite brands are from Japan and apparently they are soooo much cheaper there! If and when I make it there, I’m going with empty suitcases and fill it with all the art materials!

    • @parularora

      Thanks a lot. I use a few different neon brands. For gouache it’s Holbein and Turner. For Japanese gansai it’s Choosing Keeping.

    the photography of your video is extraordinary, and clearly what you say resonates with me as perfectionism, ans letting go of it. Your art is beautiful, I will be watching all of your videos. I have a question : I bought some art supplies, I’m all set to start a sketchbook, I’ve been for at least a month. I’m a creative person, but not a artist. I’m blocked and can’t seem to be able to start. I’m afraid I won’t like what will come out of it, that I won’t find it beautiful. What should I do to get unstuck? Thank you so much for you input. geneviève

    • @parularora
      @parularora  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ahh thanks for your lovely message. I can totally relate to getting stuck and not knowing how to start. I’ve made a video of how I trick myself into starting a new sketchbook. Have a look at that. Also I usually keep a board on Pinterest with ideas of what I might want to draw if I am not feeling inspired. Or why not go on a drawing date to a cafe and people watch and draw. You can do it on your own or with a fellow artist. Summer is a great time for that. And finally if you are interested in drawing people why not try a life drawing class. Find one near you or there are loads online that you can join. I hope this helps.

    What is the name of the paint set you show with the round pans? Is it gouache? You don’t list it in the description of paint used. I’m always looking for a set of gouache in pans I don’t want to carry tubes. Thanks

    • @parularora
      @parularora  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes they are pan gouache. They are Holbein and are called opaque watercolours. The reason why I haven’t listed it is because I bought mine from a seller on eBay from Japan as they aren’t available in the UK. There are also Carandache pan gouache that are more easily available but the pigment quality of Holbein ones are much better.
