Mentioned that she has more moments where she's sheathing the Katana more often than cutting but it's quite tied in the story which is another attention to detail. The longer Miyabi has the sword out, it's more unpredictable (eg: ghost in the sword goes berserk) so the faster and efficient she is when she does unsheathe it, the better it is for her and fighting

One thing I noticed that you may have overlooked or glossed over unintentionally. If you watch during the 'invisible' moments, especially dirong her ultimate strike sequence, you can imply where she is by the wafting of the blue wispfire in her hair. That water-like effect is the blue that suffuses her hair and it follows the animation definitions already established for how her hair moves. It's really nice to see. Though yes it is still a lot of.implied movement between poses, therr is a bit more definition than you might think from a first blush.
I redownloaded the game for Miyabi I quit the game after 2 days of gameplay I wasn't hitting me in the start and optimization wasn't too good now it seems to be perfect. So yeah umm ok
I wish they would send you the actual character to play around with, because the amount of extra love they put into every move is just so far beyond what you can see in a trailer. For instance, her tossing the sheathed sword and catching it is the return-to-idle animation if you stop after her 3rd normal attack. Not that that sorta thing is atypical for MHY -- they've done custom return-to-idle for every character they've released in all games since... I think Hu Tao? Also, I'm not sure why, but she is substantially less visible during her attack animations in the trailers than she is in-game -- not sure if that was a change in development, of if they made her more transparent in the trailers, but if you look at any showcase online you'll see that she's still visible for each slash in every attack except for her ult and the first portion of her Shimotsuki Stance (her charged normal).
They've done custom return to idle animation at least since Genshin 1.0. Fischl is a prime example as has different returns after each normal attack with the returns after the 3rd and 5th attacks even having her do the ohohoho laugh.
Only a theory but might have been the "camera bug" they fixed shortly after 1.4's release as the recorded gameplay had to be captured before the patch came to live.
One of the greatest attention to detail is in that thumb animation for her ultimate, her thumb is pressing a fingerprint scanner on her sword hilt to unsheathe it. This is because only a member of the Hoshimi family can use the blade, otherwise, there are consequences.
@Jinrai_ if you watch the cutscene again, you notice that Sarah had mentioned she can use it because of when they copied her biometrics when she was in the VR environment. Sarah didn't use her actual flesh and blood hand, she used a mechanical/technology glove that presumably had a match of Miyabis prints on them.
The best thing about Miyabi's animations is her skirt. It's a long skirt, and in a lot of games these end up ballooning out to avoid clipping, but they do some really cool swishing motions with hers, it perfectly follows her movements, over-spins past neutral from momentum, and then flows back to rest. So fluid.
Nah the best thing about it is it emulates a samurai robe asthetically. It's even is split on the right side to further ascent it, jacket completes the look. So in the front draws your eye to her military/business while the back looks completely samurai. Personally I like the short skirt mod made for her.
This is gonna be a hot take, but comparing her to Vergil made me really disappointed in her animations/kit. She doesn't do a lot of what Vergil does, she also doesn't have a concentration meter that rewards you for playing well. She also doesn't have a long range sword attack or summon swords. The lack of air combos in the game also feels like missed potential. The only thing she really has from Vergil is judgement cut and the slashing affects when the sword is unsheathed. She also doesn't have the teleporting shenanigans that are key to Vergil's gameplay. However, I will say she's very good as Miyabi, and that made me really enjoy her personality and gameplay. Being able to block attacks with her combo and manage i-frames is quite fun and sold me on the character.

I find it really cool how if you look at some of her unsheathing animations you can see her pressing the finger print lock on the sheathe, just a cool neat little detail that they didn’t just ignore, or I could just be seeing things, who knows :)
I dont remember whether Miyabi uses phone in a game, but her promotional comics even include small detail when she puts phone higher than usual human, to her actual ears. So yeah, they do a lot of small things - and I hope they'll keep doing that further. UPD: also remembered one thing I was very pleased to see. That moment when Proxies are on the edge of being uncovered and Zhu Yuan with Qingyi save them. Qingyi says she received a message from Fairy and reads a lot 0s and 1s. They could just put any random numbers there but that were real 4 sets of 8 bits, that were really a binary form of "help" in UTF-8 encoding.
I know you mainly focus on anime-adjacent things, but the boss animations within the last decade of FromSoftware games are a must see for any animator. Truly the peak of the games industry.

There are a lot of instructions and references of battojutsu and iaijutsu available that you can search for; we can notice that it's not only inserting the sword into the sheathe but also fitting the sheathe onto the blade. It's cheating the animation to give a more cool and anime feel. Even when drawing out the blade (batto), the arm holding the sheath also slightly retracts the sheath to gain more space to allow the blade to be drawn out.
Can confirm, feels amazing to play. No other character did i ever just go solo activities for the fun of it. Even if there's no reward i still just wanna samurai hack and slash with her.
The sword is possessed by a demon, and keeping it sheathed is (one of) the ways she can keep it contained. That’s why she keeps it sheathed until it needs to be drawn to slash something. 🔥
4:30 So, going to say right now that as a Hoyo game, they already have katana movesets from previous games, specifically Honkai Impact 3, that they used here but tweaked to fit in. Definitely the Yae battlesuits, as well as Raiden Mei's APHO version, and I think Herrscher of Origin as well?
Started playing the game less than a week ago due to a friend's recommendation, Miyabi was my first S-rank draw and ohhhh boy. Think she's around 80% of my Agent usage at the moment.
And yes in her sheaths theirs a fingerprint scanner, meaning she can only unsheath her sword, but theirs also reason for that, but play the story first.
From some video clips I saw on TH-cam talking about Iai-do, or Ken-jutsu, they say sheathing requires both hands moving: the hand holding the sheath should going forward while you sheathing. And while you pull out the katana, it's sheath going backwards for faster pulling. But I've not seen any anime or video game have done such movement yet.
As a Miyabi haver....she is VERY satisfying to play. My god she is amazing. The Path of the Hero trailer they released though....that one is heartbreaking and beautiful. It's pure anime, and is proof Hoyo could easiuly turn any of their games into a full length movie or series if they wanted.

Some people have already figured out the Heights of Various Characters in Zenless Zone Zero because of that though, and the Results are kinda Surprising. • Lighter (Sons of Calydon): 6 feet 1 inches (185.42 cm) Tall. • Burnice White (Sons of Calydon): 5 feet 3 inches (160.02 cm) Tall (I think, the Thumbnail image on the video was at least a month ago and now I can't find it anywhere!). • Hoshimi Miyabi (Section 6): 4 feet 11 inches (149.86 cm) Tall. It´s just mindboggling how much details they bring into their characters and animations. When you look at some western studios and their work... Bethesda and co. It´s just hillarious that many western gamers don´t even know Mihoyo. I love ZZZ and Genshin in and out. Would i be rich, i would whale just to give them the credits they deserve. Thanks whales! Since I saw you have VODs of reacting to animations, can I suggest Fog Hill of Five Elements? Just the final episode fight in S2 (which is less than 5 mins) and I guarantee you, YOU'D NERD OUT!!
Miyabi is just one character out of an entire cast with incredible animations, I know a lot of folks slept on Yanagi and Lighter because of Miyabi and honestly they're missing out. Knowing how these games go, I won't be surprised if Hoyo just keeps one-upping themselves with each new character. Especially when we inevitably get another Void Hunter.
its really the motivation patch of zzz other also dub it as the soft relaunch of the game due to they partially remade one of the core game mechanic (ult being invidiual charge not a team shared charge)
in terms of animations, imo ZZZ is hoyo's best game for it, everything feels really dinamic and pleasing/cool to look at (I haven't played Hi3 pt2 tho)
Well, ZZZ is both newest of their games and... uhm... most unbound?.. Not being limited by "dramatic sci-fi" plot of HI3 or fantasy world of Genshin, but being free to go wild with characters, weapons, effects, styles, etc. Both Burnice and Miyabi trailers match the game perfectly while being completely different.
The funny thing is its highly likely the blade isnt that heavy at least to her given her other trailers. its definitely a design choice to make the animation look better
i do agree she doesnt have the most fun choreo to look at because of her simple looking stances, but they definitely acknowledged that and went hard on the vfx+sfx. So i commend them for taking on the challenge to make her look simple yet feel impactful to play, she's by no means perfect, but still ticks a lot of boxes

i do agree she doesnt have the most fun choreo to look at because of her simple looking stances, but they definitely acknowledged that and went hard on the vfx+sfx. So i commend them for taking on the challenge to make her look simple yet feel impactful to play, she's by no means perfect, but still ticks a lot of boxes
I prefer the animations where the attacks actually connect instead of slashes appearing out of nowhere around the character.
