Building a Large Wooden Gate for the Barnyard

  • We are building a Large wooden gate to install in our barnyard fencing. The gate is seven and a half feet long and the interior is filled with a stock panel. This makes it prefect for small livestock. We just used treated deck boards to build the gate out of, and it is easy to build. We also used 2" & 2.5" deck screws, 1" fencing staples, and a 3" long bolt to connect the braces together.

    Gates on our old place were built the same as yours, except for no wire. One other difference was that the hinge side pole was about 5' higher than the top of the gate such that a support (guy) wire could be added to insure that the far end of the gate did not sag. Our gates were at least 12' wide.

  • @roseymalino9855

    Good solid job. At the risk of being nit-picky, because of movement and its weight, those gate hinges should have been attached with through bolts.

  • @keithkubicek3394
    @keithkubicek3394 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Looking good! It might just be the way the camera is sitting but the left (unbraced) post looks plumb is the gate level? If it's not you can tighten the top lag screw until its level and put the top hinge back on, if a half turn is what you need another person's idea to pin the top screw pointing down would work and the gate can't be lifted off the hinges.

    • @CountryViewAcres
      @CountryViewAcres  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      the gate is unlevel, because the ground is going downhill. so the gate follows the ground. if I level the gate it would be 8" to 12" higher than the ground on far end.

    Will the pressure treated wood degrade the sheep panel over time? Oh, and previous posters were correct, your top hingepin needs to be pointing dow to prevent someone or something from lifting it up and taking it off the hinges.

    • @CountryViewAcres
      @CountryViewAcres  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah it is so I can lift it off if I want. But the hinges are in a slight bind and it is so heavy I dont think I could lift it off without losing a hinge. It weights 4 times what a 12 foot metal gate weighs. It definitely needs hung on a fence brace or it will pull the post over.
