I love how they improved the story to be more about Leon dealing with survivor's guilt and grief over Raccoon City and using his advanced training as a coping mechanism, it gives SO much more weight to his determination to save Ashley and prevent an even worse outbreak.
... what part specifically did that?
@@ThreshAllden it's woven trough the entire story, the whole "doing my job" schtick.
He felt he could not protect anyone as a police rookie during the incident so he feels he needs to make up for it.
Same with his action hero quips. It's less goofy remarks and more processing the horrors and atrocities with humor in the moment so he can keep fighting.

The fact it took Ashley 18 years to learn to climb down the ladder in remake is astonishing

In the original, after the bridge town area, you go through this little area before reaching Mendez's house. It's the area where you can jump down and find your first fish. In the remake, the abandoned factory area has the exact same layout as the original, except you're going through it backwards. It's little things like that that make this remake remarkable.

Well, he is a blue furry monster that makes my 1 year old smile when he's on screen.
This game is definitely living up to the hype. The graphics are an improvement, obviously. It has the same great, story and humor with a self aware, B-movie edge that I love, and the controls have been improved dramatically. And I love all the little things they added to seperate is from the original. I miss the stuff they cut out, especially the giant Ramon robot, but overall, it's definitely an upgrade.

Its times like these I genuinely feel like I've lost my mind. The humor and charm are completely sucked out of the remake, there is nothing B-movie about it very much a blockbuster experience unlike the original. It's not an upgrade and I refuse to believe the people praising it are actually fans of the original.
The Ramon robot actually was in the game. It just spit fire at you instead of chasing you down.
@@paulj6805 I completely agree with you man. Not only is the campiness gone, i think the artstyle is worse/generic, which also takes away from the atmosphere.
The remake is fine, especially for younger people who refuse to play games with different control schemes, but it will never replace the original.

Regarding the missing boss "U3" or "it" there's a section when you first reach the island where thered a massive door off to the right and Leon can't access it but he reacts to it.
I assume it's one of the bosses for Separate Ways dlc.
If you pay attention to the notes around the castle, the main butler to Salazar even remarks how he is transforming himself into Verdugo (the boss in the sewer) and the housekeeper / maid is gonna become something "even better" a U3 one might say.
Because unlike the original, the remaining Verdugo is MIA from Salazar's side for the remainder of the section after Leon falls and doesn't join together when they become the boss in the clock towel

I never liked that boss anyways, so I don’t mind that it was taken out.
That was my thoughts as well. They are definitely going to have us fight Verdugo #2 and U3 as Ada. I even think they might have us fight the "Big Cheese" pre-transformation and Saddler pre-transformation as well.

In the notes, the Novistador are referred to as "U3" at first. Novistador is a name given to them later by Saddler. I dont think U3 the boss is coming back

"Beat the last enemy" is a lie. In the first village when they all leave and I was looting the houses, one villager who skipped church just jumped out of a wardrobe to attack. I was spooked! D=

When I was in the castle and I skipped back to the front entrance just to talk to the Merchant only to find a whole crew there waiting to jump me 😭😭

My jaw absolutely dropped when I shotgunned an enemy and not only did their arm come off, but so did their shoulder and a large chunk of their side. RE2R impressed me with the way you could dismember enemies, but RE4R is a whole new level.
You can blow their entire torso off its awesome. Didnt really notice it much on hardcore (was mostly using the pistol and knife)
They made a parry mechanic so broken overpowered for this remake that they had to add knife durability just to try to even it out. The knife just does everything in this game and I love it.
On the topic of Ashley cheering you on, she also did that in the original but it was a lot more subtle. She would cower behind you as you shot but she would sometimes do little fist pumps when you killed an enemy. Now, it's a lot more overt and she'll comment fairly frequently it feels. While I really do like the remake, I'm actually kinda glad that it's a not a straight replacement of the original. I like the changes of the remake but I still love the campiness of the original.
Exactly! You have two very great versions of a very great game and story. It’s wonderful! I love Leon. Both versions of him.

The RE2 remake is probably still my favourite but this one comes really close. And it's nice that Capcom is allowing the original RE4 to still be widely available at the same time. If only other publishers took note...
I'd say they're honestly of equal quality, it's crazy. Like resident evil sort of just weirdly became one of the most consistently high quality franchises we have these days. Like even 3 I know people complain about, I think it's pretty good still
4 makes 2 look bad. Even just as a remake
To me RE4R is better RE2R because at least this game doesn't contradict itself
@@johndodo2062 lol, you trippin. Both are really good. But 2 remake is actually survival horror, 4 is a fantastic action horror game. But both offer different things.

Capcom is on a roll as of late, and I'm loving it. This remake was everything a remake should be.

I’ve played the original countless times, but even I prefer the remake overall. The new combat system is incredible, puzzles are more numerous and engaging, and the story and lore have been expanded upon significantly. The new side quests, attaché case charms, and new treasuring combining system also add to the replay value. Separate Ways will probably reintroduce some of the omitted areas, and hopefully improve on them.
I didn’t get into RE until RE7 came out. Once I played RE7 it was game over for me, these games are my favorites. The first time I played Resident evil 4 was when I played it on Quest 2 VR. So to play this updated version on PS5 with surround sound was surreal.
I finished this game so fast that all the takes on how good it is hadn’t hit TH-cam yet, so I’m glad I can partially relive it through an Arlo review
SO excited for this! I partially credit Arlo for helping me get into the RE series and I couldn't be more thankful. Playing through the original RE4 right now for the first time!

OG 4 is boring. Remake 4 is much better.
This game was AMAZING!! Its similar enough to the original while also distancing itself enough to feel so different at the same time.
I was initially glad they were making changes to the story. The original already holds up that I'd rather see them do something different, and they did a pretty good job
I likely am not the first to point this out, Arlo, but @9:13 you mention Ashley pumps her fists when you get a good shot. She does that in the original. It's most noticeable on the lift ride when you go to fight Mendez.
Your RE4 playthrough on ArloPlays was my introduction to the original way back in the day. Been a big fan of ever since and loved the remake as well
As someone who has never played the original, I am so happy there is more RE4 to play.
This is my first time playing 4; knowing its legacy. It has become one of my favourite games of all time. Can't wait to do multiple runs to hunt for the platinum.
RE2 Remake is probably my favorite, it truly captured my heart. But 4 is SOOOOO close. It's fantastic, easily a masterpiece like the original.
Can’t agree more. RE4 remake is one of my favourite games of all time. So glad I got into the resident evil franchise. So much fun, story, characters, action, graphics, music. Capcom have really delivered well through the past years. ❤
I was like you at first, worried that they wouldn’t do the original justice. Well, the first gameplay trailer showed me I was silly to worry, and from that moment on I was more hyped than maybe any other game before
And tbh I should have know, the REmakes have been straight fire since like 2002
Calling it now, though: since the rumor is that they want to make a more-substantial version of Separate Ways, I'm expecting to see the "removed" boss fight against U-3 was cut from Leon's campaign with the intention of being included in Ada's campaign instead. It seems non-sensical to include additional files that establish the reason for the naming scheme without U-3 itself making an appearance somewhere.
And honestly, I didn't really feel like the main campaign was lacking in boss fights, and there are those optional sidequest bosses in addition to the main ones. So in a way, it's another case of "something lost, something gained."
The sphere hunter lowkey confirmed U3 is in separate ways and i'm glad it's that way. Gonna make the campaign way more impactful

Well Arlo reviewing RE4 was unexpected but a good surprise.
One of my favorite games of all time now. I do agree about the darkness of the game. It’s hard to play when it’s light out
Great review, it's really an amazing game! A few things though: you can still equip your guns inside the attaché case and you can still "Tetris" your items if you want, just like in the original.
Never played a survival horror game. Just here to listen to Arlo gush about his favorite stuff.

I'm glad you mentioned how dark the game was, I thought it was a problem with my TV. I also had the crank the HDR all the way up multiple times.

I just started playing this game yesterday. It is my first ever Resident Evil game, and I think I can say that I am now hooked. I’m only on chapter 3, and I am absolutely obsessed with the game now.
Had to crank the HDR to see anything as well- glad it wasn’t just me. Playing it during the daytime was almost impossible haha. Still a tremendous game 💪

Missed opportunity for the opening line of the video to be “What are ya buyin’?”
The cool thing of this remake is that it is so respectful to the original it also makes me want to play the original again, it nails the action so damn good, that i have a mod idea i need to see, the idea is quite simple, imagine bringing the shooting range elements to the normal gameplay, such as the music and score, imagine instead of scary music when enconters start, you get the shooting range music, it starts with the before recharge rithm, until you kill 3-5 ganados, then the normal shooting range music starts with good quick rithm, then after killing 10 ganados or scoring high enough, the bonus mode music starts, imagine that plus the john wick skin and what do we get? Devil May Cry again lol, but seriously, i need it to happen as a mod
OKAY BUT IVE HIGHKEY BEEN WAITING FOR THIS REVIEW
I've gone through like 8 times already. Its such a blast, even thr S+ professional run was fun (minus a few sections) and I love that the endgame is still turning it into an arcade shooter to get money for upgrades and infinite ammo weapons.
I always forget I have a parry in the heat of the moment, and even when I do remember, I don't want to use it because I don't want my knife to break.
I beat this game three times in a row, its just so good
Excessive darkness in games is a ubiquitous issue. I crank many visual parameters on my PC and monitor before I launch almost any game. Then when I exit the game, I'm staring at a washed-out eye-bleeding headlight of a monitor until I change the monitor mode back to normal and press "Cancel" on the Nvidia applet. I don't know what game devs have against letting us see the art that they worked so hard to produce. Maybe, someday they will explain it to me.
They NAILED it, and I hope their work is fully rewarded when it comes to the Game awards this year...they ALL deserve it!
This remake is soo great , so similar to the original but also very different at the same time , I love it! Your review tho is a little confusing just like my comment ,but your whole video was like this lol , no but yes.
Fun and unrelated trivia: In the official Nintendo Power strategy guide for Super Smash Bros. Melee, the trophy for KK Slider mysteriously has a different name: Arlo.

This RE4 remake is fine. But it would be great if Capcom didn't change the maps from the original, removed content from post-Gamecube versions of the game, and did it all in a cheap, efficient, soul-crushing funko pop art style
Replaying 2 and 3 to get in the mood for this one. Its a great time to be a RE fan lately
Dead Space and Metroid Prime remakes were great too, and I'm looking forward to the Advance Wars one as well. Lots of great remakes already this year.
Those were remasters: updater graphics and quality of life improvements without drastically changing the original content. The base game still runs beneath the cosmetic improvements.
RE4 is a true remake. But yeah both Prime and Dead Space were excellent and pretty much replace the originals.

@@Dreampiece. if you enjoyed the original you will enjoy the remaster of prime. We will all have to wait to see how good the advanced wars remaster is going to be, but im sure it will be fine. Im not enjoying the artwork myself, but Im going to try not to let that interfere with my enjoyment of the game. Ive been waiting for over a decade for it after all lol
In terms of the game giving you more ammo and stuff, I was actually the opposite. Not, I definitely got more Green Herbs when I was low HP, but the vast majority of my "random" drops were money.
On my first playthrough, by the time I got to Saddler, I had 0 bullets. The game refused to give me ammo. Of course, right before the fight it gives you some static ammo drops but I just bought the rocket launcher. I had so much cash and so little ammo the whole way through, I just said "screw it."

Good review btw, I'm almost 100% done with the game. (just gotta nab those cat ear's...)
Couple of point's to bring up:
In regards to the shooting gallery, you can bypass it by doing NG+. You can spend Spinels to buy all the Gold Coins you want. (i know you said you didn't wanna use'em, but ya gotta make choices)
I'll say my only criticism about that is yeah, you can cheese it by save scumming. And ontop of that the charms Only work in your current run. Which, I would have preferred if they were just things you earned that can be used in any run, because they're all very situational, and by the time your on your 3rd/4th run, ya don't really need 90% of them. (the same criticism can be applied to the briefcases)
Can't say I had a problem with the Darkness since it's supposed to be a Horror experience. I get what your saying though, I just feel like it's intentional.
Also that comment on Healing was...I don't think you worded it very well. I didn't really understand the criticism exactly.
24:00 I'm assuming you're talking about U3, which is arguably the worst boss of the game. I think you're the first reviewer who likes it.
However, data miners have uncovered the Seperate Ways DLC and within there's a U3 fight.
Seeing how *most* people would agree it was the worst fight, it'll probably get a heavy rework.
absolutely LOVE this game. my only complaints are that it's much harder to get the special guns and that Leons RPD outfit isn't here. the outfits (other than the suit) are horrendous. Ashley is infinitely better now, even having possibly my favorite line in the game. I do think some of the villains lost some character though, Mendez in particular is MUCH less memorable than before.

You should do a video that talks about the changes and cuts. It would be interesting cuz some changes were great and some cuts were sad
i just played resident evil 4 recently (og and remake) and feel like i speedran being a fan of the original and being skeptical of the remake... it was such a pleasant surprise to see how well they remade it! re4 was also the first game i played and loved that felt really... different, too. like i'm such a nintendo fanboy i'm always playing these cute E-rated games so going from that to this i was like "oh, i'm not so sure about this..." but it's so good!! what a delightful game and remake.

I was cynical at first too, not after beating it 3 times over. Literal GOAT game
Cynical literally till the week before it was released because I didn't go research it and get hyped ..the waiting would have just been bad.
But then I got to see it, and thought hey this looks decent.
Then I got to see some of the people who got their hands on the game early okay like 15% of it, and that honestly sold me. It seemed very faithful to the original while still managing to improve upon it.
Then the day before release Shirrako played the entire thing on their channel and that left zero room to doubt anything about how fantastic the game was. Of course then I got to play it myself and it's so so worth it!
RE4 may have not needed a remake, but this remake is perhaps Capcom's best released RE game to date. It makes one hell of a compelling argument for its existence.
@@samf.s.7731 Best RE game is stretching it. This game is still behind in content compared to re5 and 6. That is to say, there's definitely some things that make it stand out as something of its own thing. The quests it has are really cool, yet not enough hunting ones, and figuring out optimally how to make the most money with your treasure was neat. The key chain things are also neat but are slow to use for speedrunning as you have to go through a big loading screen to get them.

this game is the best remake in the REmake trilogy (2, 3, 4). I love the changes capcom made to the lore and story, as well as how they perfected the combat system after RE2 reinvented the wheel using the OG 4 combat as a basis.
it feels crazy to say because of how important OG 4 was for me, but REmake 4 is just as good as the original. it somehow managed to be my favorite game of this generation. I’ve beaten it like 8 times! and I want to keep going!
some of the details in the cinematics are also nuts - Leon hittin’ the one-handed brass check, Ashley limp-wristing her shots while being controlled by Saddler and causing the gun to jam as a result, everything with Krauser, the knife fighting, fight choreography in general, etc etc.
I really want to watch this review but I just feel like I can't spoil the game for myself. This is one I must play! I'll come back after finishing it I guess.
This is the most quiet Arlo video I've ever watched.
I started playing Resident Evil with RE5 back in 2009. Didn't think much of it at the time.
Back in 2016, I went back to RE5 with a friend and had so much fun that we unlocked the Platinum Trophy together. After that, we did RE6. And while we admittedly had less fun with it, we still had a blast.
I Platinumed RE2 in 2020, and now I'm working for the Platinum Trophy in RE4.
The time I have spent with this series over the years has put it up there with the likes of Metroid and Zelda for me. Royalty of its own genre.
I hope to have the platinums in all of the games someday. My first tattoo just might be Resident Evil. Words can not express how much I have loved this franchise.
Honestly, I think the cut boss was for the better (or at least neutral). Literally every time I replay re4, I forget that it's even in the game and when it shows up, Im like "Oh yeah. This guy. *roll eyes*" The first half is a boring "hit the switches and don't die" section like 3 times, and then the actual boss fight afterwards is just a tanky monster dude.

The auto-sort for the case isn't always the best option. It's ok to use here and there but when you actually need to manage space Tetris style then you need to do it manually. Especially during that Lunker Bass mission if you've got a case full of items.

Try changing contrast. Reshade can do it, even the monitor or TV if you have to.
