    This week I’m continuing the journey of insulating my house with rockwool and getting ready to insulate my cathedral ceiling with fibreglass insulation!
    The prep work for venting the cathedral ceiling has been somewhat of a challenge. Cutting every single cardboard baffle and stapling it into place.
    Help me determine if it’s worth the savings!

    Excellent work !! It requires a homeowner to detail to the levels you are working. IF you have any water pipes on/in an outside wall insulate behind, the cold side,, but do not insulate on the warm side. A little artful leaking of heat can keep pipes from freezing. Knowing you,, there is not a pipe on an outside wall. Just fold the cardboard, No strapping required, and the folding takes place down on your work bench, Make the C shaped folded part just a pinch too wide and no staples are required, Done it many times.

    I was just listening to a friend who is a builder/realtor and she was saying how things were so off in some of the building and the way they hacked it together she didn't see how it could pass code, but they passed it. And this is on a $500,000 house!!! Trust me! YOU are doing a far better job than a lot of builders do that throw up these houses as fast as they can with laborers who don't always care how it done or if to code but because they are "builders" many times the inspectors just pass them anyway.

    Wow, that attention to detail is excellent. Not only are you saving money, but you are getting a much better insulation result than a lot of pro installers would do...
    When I did a self build, I did subcontract the frame. Afterwards I found a lot of weak insulation spots, due to wires, etc where the installer just shoved in the insulation, compressing it, rather than carefully cutting and placing it like you did. It will 100% be worth the effort, your energy bills/wood boiler will thank you for it!!

    • @SimpleLivingwithBiata
      @SimpleLivingwithBiata  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Wow that’s crazy they just tried to shove it in! Not only dangerous because if the wire shoves back a siding nail could hit it!

    • @tails4e

      @@SimpleLivingwithBiata we don't use siding for cladding in Ireland thankfully, but it's a good point for places that do, keeping the wires in place is really important.

    As someone else mentioned strip the wire jacket off the copper wire will get you more money but is it worth it in time when you already have a lot on the go. I take my scrap metal to a local recycler and I sort all of the steel, aluminum,brass,stainless and copper out separately. It does get me more money because the recycle yard doesn’t have to pay someone to do it. I have separate bins I store it in so it’s little to no effort for me to do this. Just something for you to consider. On the ceiling saving over 3k on a diy is a huge savings. You put some sweat equity in to gain $3000 great investment the way I look at it.

    Biata I have told you many times that you are one heck of a woman. It takes longer to do it right the first time. When I added 1200 square feet of house onto my parents place ( now mine) the inspector asked who did the electrical and I said we did. He said that we did better work than 90% of the electrician do. We had one connection that was bad. Our ground at one outlet broke when twisting it for the barrel crimp. He said that if we fixed it right then he wouldn't mention it. That made me happy knowing his praise. I bought homeowners scaffolding like you can get at harbor freight. It will go through doorways and on wheels. My brother and I would do the insulation and sheet rock on them. You can easily reach 14' with them. Just put a bag of insulation on one end and pull yourself along fron truss to truss. Can't wait to see you next week.

  • @FredD63
    @FredD63 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Biata strip all the sheathing from the copper wire. You will get three times more money back when you scrap it…. when you’re putting your insulation in make sure that it is not real tight so it has room to breathe. The cost saving will benefit you if you don’t mind doing the work that is money that you can save and don’t have to spend or it is money that you can move to somewhere else and, use it toward appliances or whatever…… keep up the good work. Stay safe. 🇺🇸👊🏼👊🏼✌🏼

    You are absolutely right in your theory of why the different trades sometimes hate each other 👍🤣... As you get to be all the trades, you can only thank yourself for the inconveniences along the build .

    I can more pr less guarantee the costs would have gone up for battens and boards vs just stapling in fibre. OK a chunk of time was lost in prepping the cardboard but that's time versus materials.
    If you break the difference down to an hourly rate, essentially you'd be on a pretty good hourly rate to break even. Have you noticed less outside noise/echo in there yet? You certainly will when the roof is up.

    That's funny about why all the different trades hate each other. But how nice it must be to be able to blame someone else for the inevitable mistakes, right? 😄

    I am surprise that where interior walls intersect your exterior walls the inspector didn’t ask you to install a vapour barrier before the interior walls we’re constructed. This would create a continuous vapour barrier on the warm side of the exterior walls.

      The way you've said is the best and easiest way to do it but you can get around it afterwards with accousitc seal. I didn't realize before I threw the home up!

    You can use a tablesaw to rip the cardboard to size. Use an old blade.

    Just curious if the venting cardboard has to go up that high? I know on flat ceiling it just has to extend a little beyond the blown insulation to prevent wind washing.

      It needs a vent space all the way up and to the ridge vent of the roof :)

    I've never used rock wool. Here in southern Indiana we're strictly pink fiber glass.
    Insulating has to be one of my least favorite things to do on a build..

    Keep up the good work. You are getting there. We all have to save money somewhere. You can check with local scrap metal yards. They will give you money for the wire. Wire with the casing is called dirty wire. Not as much money. If you strip the casing, they pay you more
