H1B is dicey, ask folks who were impacted by tech layoffs. You had the luxury of saying no to Canada because you have a prospect of an American citizen as a spouse. So you can get your Greencard from that route. Else for security of PR canada is better.

Excellent breakdown. Anyone from CS background should never move to Canada unless they want the stability of a PR and citizenship. Opportunities and money in the US and India are way better on PP basis.

Most people who did US --> Canada end up moving to US with Canadian citizenship. I lived in US for 10 years, then 2.5 years in India, 2 years in Canada and now back to India. In India, adjustment in society and system is not easy, especially if someone leaves at young age (Like I did at age of 20 for my masters). I moved to India due to family reasons, then Canada thinking with Canadian passport, I would return to India on OCI and I would have easy access to US in future. But after 2 years in Canada, decided its not worth it. If I was 29, might have waited till citizenship but at my age could not put marriage at stay for another 2 years just due to Canadian citizenship.

I moved from US to Canada on a PR. I am a citizen now. I studied and worked in US for 11 years. My reason was to get immigration stability. Yes I agree don't come on work permit. However, these days without Canadian Experience PR is not easy. Also with US experience and Education, you will standout and will get decent jobs and live in best neighborhoods as well.

Thank you for filming the video with one of the University of Hong Kong students. I also applied to HKU in 2023 for a BSc in Actuarial Science and got accepted with a massive scholarship. You won't believe how big a scholarship I have received because of your help. To give you an idea, my scholarship covers 100%(tuition fee, accommodation)+ lump sum cash at around $300,000+ around $20K per year (for an entire four years) for living expenses + one overseas (from Hong Kong to another country) learning opportunity for a week, fully funded from flights to accommodation and many more. Once again, thanks a lot for making that video. I hope you read my comment.

You missed the major differences. You will spend less money in Canada as you will pay zero for health care . No social security and Medicare tax (7.65%)in Canada. CPP maximum in Canada is 3600 . Huge difference. You will pay equal tax but you will get free health in Canada. Then you will get some of your tax money back in social programs like child benefit ( unless you make more than 250k), government money to children education account etc . Canada have better quality of life than USA. Slow healthcare but you will go to emergency care in emergency situation. I have rejected job offer in USA for money reason after offering 40% hike as your take home remain same after all the deduction and heavy payment to health care deductibles .

Not everyone has an American girlfriend who they can marry to get their pr, makes perfect sense for people to choose Canada since a lot more legal options are available there to be able to get your PR. While you can keep renewing your h1b, there is always a threat looming over your head if and when you loose your job, you need to leave the country uprooting everything you have created over the years.

  • @rohanbansal9563

Canada is a shithole for people in tech and STEM. I am not talking about people from India bodyshops like Accentrue/TCS/Infosys but real software developers, electrical and electronics engineer, aerospace engineer and biomedical engineers. I have lived in USA for a decade (master's + Work), then 2.5 years in India, 2 years in Canada and now back to India. If you are in tech/science/Mathematics there is no better country in the world than the United States. It is better to stay for your whole life on H-1B then live in Canada/Australia/UK as their citizens. I studied on a full funded masters in US, but eventually decided to move to India for parents.
I found it very difficult to fit in Indian society/culture, and ended up in Canada thinking I can get citizenship as backup, go back to India again to be with parents and later return to Canada. But I soon realized Canada is not USA, it is a substandard version of US, which has less opportunities, less robust economy, people are not as accepting and nice as Americans. All that things "Canadians are nice ane Americans are maniacs" is BS and propaganda. To make it worse, medicare and if you are chronically sick gives me insecurity. I have used healthcare extensively in US, including surgeries and I knew I was in good hands. Canada not really. I might get an appointment with specialist after I pass away. I thought of waiting till I get Canadian citizenship, but I left Canada 15 months shy of Canadian citizenship. Left back for India. I had option to marry a US citizen while I was in Canada, I would love to US later of my life in US. But abandoning my parents was not an option. I decided I love US but cannot move there at this time. I did not prefer India or Canada, as both have issues although different. At end decided on India, as both countries have issues (Canada and India) but in India parents are there. If in future (15 or 20 years down the line), US is in my fate, I would anyway reach there.
I am not the only one. I know many of my friends and acquitances who moved from US to Canada/Australia/UK, and 5 to 6 years down the line, almost everyone returned to USA.

i dont understand why Canada requires you to pay for the first year tuition fee and GIC before applying for the visa. even if the visa gets rejected (the rejections are really high), they send you the money in like 2 months after cutting a very small amount. just imagine how much they earn with your money in their hand in three months. for a student, 12lakhs approx for a year tuition, and then 12 lakhs for gic. about 25 lakhs to invest somewhere, even before getting your visa, sounds horrible. US is much better for visa applications.

In USA you will never be truly accepted as part of society vs in Canada there is still a chance and immigrants are a little more proud in proclaiming they are Canadian.

Thank you for this Information Harnoor!
I have a doubt, Let's say I complete my bachelors in India in CS and immigrate to Canada as a Permanent Resident. Now I spend like 3 years working there and get Canadian Citizenship. Now I move to USA with EB-3 in my hand and get Green card! So, the wait time for Canadian Citizens to get Green Card would be way less than Indian citizens! So, It would take almost 6 years for me to get Green Card. Isn't this option better than worrying for Job and fear of losing it every time and having only 2 months to get back to track? Please do reply!😄

LOL. First time hearing US healthcare is better than Canadian. I've lived and worked both in the US and Canada for 20+ years. Canada has walk-in clinics where you don't need private health insurance (or appointment), just provincial one and you pay $0 i.e., no co-pay. Most tests are fully covered by provincial insurance. Also, to get provincial insurance, you just have to be a resident and do not need a job. I live in BC, and students here pay a premium of 75 CAD per month but it is free once you get a work permit, and it is always free until you die. (Premiums can vary from province to province). Getting a family doctor can take months, but if you want immediate medical help you can get it instantly.
Also, if you're planning childbirth in the USA, expect to pay close to 20K USD in hospital, unless you want to save money and can do it in a bathtub in your house. (The last part about the bathtub was a joke, pls don't do that, that's not safe)
Cool video and great job trying to put together a variety of info in this video.

Actually its wrong. Canada has a way high and secure life standard + moreover in CS there's no difference at all from US / Canada minus salary which is better over wild guns in USA. Example Vancouver has much laid back luxurious lifestyle over Seattle where crazy violence, people are relentless, running behind not sure what.. etc.
Canada no matter what is way better if $ is not > life [which in USA is just a blink of dust.. with any random person shooting out of no where]
