Are Snap-On tools great quality? Yes, absolutely, and I buy used ones all the time. Are they worth getting into serious debt for? Absolutely not. I love Snap-On tools, but I don't love the way they hook people into making payments forever. Their business model isn't based on selling tools, it's based on selling credit to buy their tools. Don't fall for it! Buy what you can afford, upgrade when you need to or want to, stay free of debt, and don't sign your life away.

Great advice to round out this video. My son is getting an associates degree in diesel technology right now. As I've been purchasing tools for him, he turned me on to Tekton, and they have really impressed me. I've tried warning my son that, Snap On, Mack, Matco, Cornwell etc all have nice tools, but it's really easy to get way in debt, only to look back and realize you didn't NEED some of those tools. I couldn't agree more with the point you made about some truck tools seeming "gimmick-y" or over thought. Solid wrenches and sockets will get you a lot farther then you think.

...I know..one of my pet peeves is the metric sets skipping 15mm and 18mm..2 of the most common sizes I encounter in automotive work, along with 10,13, and 14mm...some sets skip from 14mm to 17mm, then skip 18mm and go to 19mm...drives me nuts...I find I rarely use 17mm, so I don't know why they feel it is more important than 15mm or 18mm...now 9mm, that is one size I NEVER use..but..it's still nice to have it, just in case... :)

I am not a professional auto mechanic, but do a LOT of my own wrenching, and I know every GM and Chrysler vehicle I own/have owned since the late 1980's has LOTS of 15mm and 18mm bolts under the hood, suspension, etc...most common sizes used, so a big problem when wrench/socket sets omit them...I have heard others say Ford uses 15mm/18mm as well, IDK....now, 9mm...I have NEVER found an application for that size....

You'd be hard pressed to find a tool today that doesn't perform as it should. Made by anyone. With some notable exceptions. You can't for instance cheap out on a tap and die set. Crappy taps and dies are crappy. But hand tools? They all do the same basic thing. $35 for a screwdriver is getting a screwing alright. You should be able to buy a whole set for half that price. It is unlikely you're working on super fasteners where any difference in the tool is going to make that big a difference on the job.

SnapOn is really just a status and a name. My kids come out to the shop and tease me for getting my SnapOn tools dirty. They will last me forever because I am too afraid to use those expensive little boogers.

If it makes you feel any better, That snap on ball peen dead blow hammer was originally made by trusty cook. Since the patients have expired snap on has decided to go their own separate way and make them themselves.... However you can still get that same read trusty cook dead blow ball peen hammer from Tekton these days. 👍🏻
so in this case, the Tekton tool really is on the same level. And let’s face it do you really need to be spending that much more money on the same exact tool. With the same exact handle. In the same color....

Surprised by the price of the SO dead blow; it's on par with other quality dead blows. The screwdrivers were expensive, but IMO the ratchet is worth its cost. This being said, I'm very impressed by Tekton - from the packaging and presentation to finish quality.
I have their 3/8 impacts, pliers made by Wilde that Tekton sells at a lower cost, and a sample pack of the screwdrivers. No complaints. Thinking about it, I paid $6 for the 4-pack of screwdrivers. Wanted to check them out. Their tips - PH1 and PH2 - fit fasteners surprisingly well. I'm pretty tempted to go for the 6-point ratcheting wrenches you showed.

I discovered Tekton tools years ago. In about 2015 Tekton offered a 135 piece mechanics tool set with carrying case, a selection of the most common sizes in SAE and Metric wrenches, 1/4”, 3/8” and 1/2” drive ratchets and sockets, together with a wide assortment of hex drive bits for Torx, Phillips, Allen, etc., plus the hex bit driver and one extension for each size socket drive, all for $62.99 delivered, from Amazon. That set, Tekton part number 1859, is no longer available, but what a bargain it was. I use it daily and would buy another one if they were still available. The good quality Harbor Freight impact sockets work well, as do their long handled metric wrenches for getting into tight spaces. As some of us find out the hard way, chrome sockets can be easily destroyed by impact drivers. I like used Snap-On Tools, but new ones are beyond my budget. Thanks for the video.

Price vs value is the thesis for this video. If snap on outlasts three two one, but costs five to one, then snap on is a poor value.

This must have come up on my feed because I was looking at the Snap-On site yesterday. I thought I had lost one of the few Snap-On tools I own (1/2" extra long ratchet) and was wondering how much it would have cost to replace it (fortunately I found it) $187, plus whatever it would cost to get it into the UK. A few years ago, I bought my late father a set of 1/4" drive sockets and a ratchet from a well-known UK supplier of good quality tools (Machine Mart) and it was about £20. The same thing from Snap-On was over £200!
They're good, but not that good.

Well in the day when I still turned wrenches I bought snap on tool boxes because it helped sell some of my home garage shop. People pull in and see snap on and give me credit for having snap on tools when inside the boxes I had every brand of tool. They didn't see them and if they did the job I used them. I went all snap on when I started butthe box was less than full and I needed all the tools cause starting over is really hard to do with a low cash reserve. If I had a ton of cash then I got snap on or mac. Both pretty good but expensive and then when I learned more about how made or who was the parent tool company, I bought bulk and it saved me a lot of grief as it does take more than spanner and screw drivers to go to the shop and remove all of what it took to say remove and engine or some other large item. I did over the years acquire a lot of very good tools but I still used whatever fit my hand and not name only. When starting over it is a very hard thing to do is fill the box so I would get what they see and use most cheap tools out of what they never seen. If your working for someone then that doesn't apply to what they want. I loved working for myself. And I didn't/ wasn't forced to get tools I couldn't afford

The US military exclusively uses Snap-On tools so they're on the ultimate gravy train. A customer with bottomless pockets that'll pay whatever price you say. So if every private mechanic stopped using Snap-On tools tomorrow it wouldn't hurt the company's bottom line one whit. In fact it'd probably streamline their operations and make them even more money.

  • @ajs622

I love my Tekton socket set, I think they make great tools in general. I think professional brands like Snap on, Proto, Blackhawk, SK, Mac, Matco , Wright, have there place though. It's just crazy to buy all your tools of one of those brands you would spend way more than you need to. Personally one tool I think it's worth spending the bigger dollars on are combination wrenches. You take something like the Snap on flank drive, or Wright grip wrenches no cheaper brand wrench can even come close to comparing especially with the open end of the wrench. Bolt extractors are another tool it's worth buying the professional brand. Because if you are in a position where you need an extractor it's gotta work, at that point the last thing you need is it to slip or break.

Mechanics prefer the large brands for 3 reasons.
1, The tools come to you, you need something, your a snap-on man, you phone him up and he is on his way.
2, Payments, greatest thing on earth for a company. They set aside so much money per month, week, or whatever for tool costs. for a job that needs a $90 tool, you cant charge an extra $90 for the job, you can charge some but it has to be included into labor costs. Most of the time is a flat rate, so you can get the tool and add it to the payment, bumps payment up $5 and you put your new tool in your box and move on with life. By the next time you have to add another tool, the first is or is almost paid off.
3, Most tools can supply home-gamers with all the thrills of changing their own oil in their nissan. But for the guy who is going to do it 100 times a day, 5 days a week, 50 weeks a year... Not so much. The reason Snap-on tools are sooooooo high is your buying a tool that assures you that this IS THE BEST for doing THIS job, and there is no denying it. That's why they are still sold, that's why there are still around. Any shop teacher, professional, or anyone who has a life time of experience with tools will tell you "Cry once" Yes you will spend a shit ton a cash, ONE TIME, not every 4 months when you have to buy that 3/8 ratchet yet again because that last bolt was actually welded and you have stripped the gears in your milfuky ratchet. Yes you can buy cheap tools but for the ones who use them EVERY DAY and EVERY WAY. Snap-On, Matco, Mac.. only tools to use.
