I just started collecting 2-3 days ago after watching sooooo many of your videos and Metal Jesus's videos. I ended up starting with PS2 (so I can collect both PS2 and PS1 games) and DS (once again, able to collect both DS and GBA). I'm a huge RPG fan, so there's certainly no shortage on those consoles. Found some killer deals on eBay to get started with some consoles bundled with games (found a PS2 slim bundled with Star Ocean: Til The End of Time, FFX, FFX-2, FF XII, and Rogue Galaxy :D; killer deal for RPG fan).
I may look at original Xbox as well in the future (probably right now :P). Of course, (unfortunately?) I found a really great deal on a 3ds as well that happened to include Ocarina of Time 3ds, Fire Emblem Awakenings, and Chrono Trigger DS. Off to a great affordable start :D.
I plan to start frequenting pawn shops and thrift stores in the future to find some good deals :).

I just started to collect for SNES & Sega Genesis. I owned a SNES growing up and only played Sega at my cousins house when I went to visit on the rare occasion. My collection is small, but I’m having fun.
I personally prefer the OG systems and not the emulator systems or the “compact” models.
    Reliving my childhood FTW!
Your collection is amazing! Keep the videos coming.

Man I lost such a massive collection of systems and games to either moves, trade ins, or lending them out. So my new collection begins anew with Xbox 360 & PS3, small but growing. Hey it all starts somewhere. Great channel man, wish more of the world was laid back like some of us are.

Great video John! I just recently started collecting. I prefer garage sales mostly, and have been fortunate enough to find a lot of systems in my small town. My 10 year old and I go around almost every weekend. I love it when he finds something. There's something about a 10 year old getting excited about a finding a lone Nintendo cart.

I started off my collection with the systems I grew up with, the games I played AND the games I always wanted to play so it's: Famicom(I had a NES but now I know Japanese so I went to the source and love it :), SNES/SFamicom, GB, GBC, GBA and PS1 (& PS3). Thanks to the Retron5 I also got into Mega Drive/Genesis and found myself absolutely loving it, definitely one of my favourite systems to collect for! The boxes, the games, the sounds - amazing, I can definitely see why SEGA has a special place in your heart John! (and this is coming from someone who grew up on "the Nintendo side" of the console wars.)
Great video, I agree with the points made - keep up the good work!

I recently got back in to PS1 game collecting, I'm 28 and the PS1was the first console I bought with my allowance. Fond memories with this system, plus most games are still affordable...grew up with the SNES but the prices one the SNES market are climbing too high for my wallet

Great video and advice John! I started collecting retro games again around 2010 and love it to this day. I started with the idea of experiencing the games/systems I didn't have in my youth. Being a sega kid I never owned a snes. So now getting these snes games and playing them with my kids is a totally new experience. I also did that with SMS (European games), dreamcast, gba, and others.

Good tips for beginners! I personally started collecting by getting a 2600 with games from eBay well over a decade ago but only really got into it a few years ago with the NES, SNES, Genesis before branching off to some other systems. Before you know it you can get more systems than you know what to do with, John has some great points about space!
For some reason I enjoy collecting systems that are older than I am, Fairchild Channel F is one of my favorite to collect for (neat system but definitely not for most), but I most enjoy trying out systems I missed the first time around. the 3DO has its charms and the Sega Saturn has some cool games (especially the Japanese games.)

John, I am 40 too but my first system was the NES so that holds the most nostalgia for me. I don't actively collect games, but over 30 years of playing games my collection is probably larger than the average gamer. Out of all the systems I own I can't believe how expensive Sega CD games are getting, I am glad I bought Snatcher when it originally came out.

I just started collecting retro games to relive my childhood and experiences. I started by just collecting consoles with 1 game each, is that a good place to start? So far got great deals from Facebook market for the SNES, Genesis, Gamecube, N64, OG Xbox with one game for each systems. I've gotten very good deals on these systems with 2-3 controllers each. I'm still looking out for an NES, PS1,PS2. Regret selling my PS3 6 months back but will eventually get back.

Now a days I collect franchises/game series I like. I yry to stick with PlayStation titles, but stuff like Perfect Dark has got me to buy some systems I wouldn't normally own(Xbox 360 cough cough) Favs include Gran Turismo, any Spiderman or XMen game, Resident Evil, Dead or Alive, Soul Calibur, Spawn/Todd McFarlane games, Perfect Dark, Gex, and Medievil

Great video. I am going to have to go purist on you a bit. I hate the idea of not playing with the original controller. I would recommend Atari 2600 and SNES to start. You can pick up a tube TV any trash day in my neighborhood, but about 85% of my Atari games work on my plasma TV. I love the comment you made collect what you enjoy playing. For the Atari I recommend Pitfall, Pitfall 2, Megamania, Warlords (you need 2 paddle controllers to do this one right) Ice Hockey, Montezumas Revenge, Ms. Pacman. Also the 2600 is the best over the 7800 so you can get a Starpath Supercharger. Adding 6144 RAM was quite a thrill in 1982. I can still remember the thrill of looking at the box at Babbages. Getting home and playing Dragonstomper and Escape from the Mindmaster was a great time.

@John Hancock We are the same age. My first system was the 6 stick Atari. got that when I was 6. But the system I begged for was the Sega Mega drive. It was a mom and pop store and sold the Japanese version. they sold all the carts. US UK & JAP. Alas I moved to Canada in 2006 and left everything in Moms attic (UK). I am starting again here In Canada. I am starting with the 360. Just grabbed a great haul for 130 buck< 66 GAMES..The 360 was the first system I bought when I moved in 06 to Canada, so it holds a special meaning to me plus its a fun system to collect. I want to go SEGA route tho most. A guy hopefully tomorrow is meeting me with Genesis 2. No tv cable but I will by the Pound convertor. I'm trading a ps4 game for it. So worth it to me.
Thanks for such informative videos. Truly affirms the route I want to take.

Great video John, we are about the same age, so we have very similar leanings. Although I never got into the 2600. To me the 8 bit and 16 bit eras are the pinnacle of gaming and that's where any gamer should start. While its expensive to collect for those eras, there are still tons of great games on all those systems that are very reasonably priced.

  • @TheClassicWorld
    @TheClassicWorld 6 ปีที่แล้ว

I 100% agree. Although our views seem fairly unpopular since most people think the newer systems are the best or the really old ones. Bu, the SNES, Genesis, GBA SP, and DS Lite are some of the greatest handhelds and home consoles ever, retro or otherwise, for gameplay and libraries. I have gone over this a few times on my channel so far. Such powerful systems.

Great picks and solid advice. I agree to start small and cheap to see if this is something you'd want to get into. There's no 'wrong way' necessarily other than buying stuff as investment and profit. Games are meant to be played, it's an incredible disservice to the community to try to rook others in an attempt to force scarcity. Gamers know what these things are worth, were to find them, and we're not interested in over-paying for anything.

Awesome video! I subscribed because of your numerous appearance on MJR but I'm glad that I did because your videos are pretty informative! I started to play video games when the NES appeared in our Canadian market back in 1986 (I was 8 years old) and I haven't looked back since... but I never owned a SNES because I was a Sega fanboy! Now I'm trying to get some of the SNES classic but it's getting super expensive to collect for that system since it seems to be the hot ticket right now! The DS is an awesome system but I find that the PSP is superior is you're short on cash since you can install emulators on it... I know this is a villain thing to say but roms is sometimes a good route to go when your funds are limited! I also think that the Retron 5 is an awesome system to play games on for on an HDTV! It's gotta start organically if you ask me. One day in 2015 I just figured I really wanted to play this 'Shenmue' game everyone was talking about, and I knew a thing or two about the Dreamcast having grown up with Sonic Adventure on PC and always being a Sonic/SEGA fan growing up. So I bought a Dreamcast and a copy of the game. I would not recommend anybody else start with Shenmue or even necessarily the Dreamcast.

But some of them are very rare and expensive. I wouldn't want an extremely huge collection because it's not about owning everything, just have all of the ones I care for.

Hey John new sub. What is your opinion on things like the everdrive or other flashcarts? I love my SNES collection even tho I only have about 25 games, but most of the games i'm missing that would like to add are getting hella expensive so I thought about picking one up.

I have a very small psp collection, I have a Nintendo ds and 3ds collection of small size and I might be starting an NES collection pretty soon. I am still deciding whether it would be worth 50 bucks to get an original NES console with cables and original or replacement controllers or getting something like a supaboy or retro duo portable handheld that plays NES, SNES, and famicom carts or even a retron 5. Any suggestions for NES?

I’m collecting strictly with Nintendo. I’m only 12, but since March of 2018 to now (February 2019) I’ve racked up quite a collection. At the beginning of this year, I had a Wii that hadn’t been plugged in for years and years, a WiiU, and a 3ds. For my birthday I got a SNES classic. I started getting an allowance right around the late summer. I the got the NES classic in August and then a Gamecube. My dad put a TV in my room that he had for a while and didn’t use, and I took apart a cubicle drawer and used it for the GameCube. I also hooked the Wii back up. Then not to much longer I bought a Gameboy Color. A few months later, I also bought a N64 classic. Finally during Christmas I got a Switch for Christmas, and my brother got a PS4, and he let me put the WiiU in my room. Finally, like a week ago I got a SNES and a CRT. In less than I year I’ve gotten most of the main Nintendo home consoles. I’ve bought a few games along the way, two or three games for each system, but to start, I started with the consoles, which is the most important thing I feel for me to do. With 25 dollars every 2 weeks for the last few months of the year, I’ve gotten a lot of consoles and even though its only been a year, I can actually call myself somewhat of a collector.

I collect Sega. Genesis, CD, Saturn and Dreamcast. Also have a large Commodore 64 and older computer collection. I rarely buy anything unless I come across a solid deal, but have accumulated quite a bit over the past 10 years or so.

Watching these kind of videos have kind of made me want to create a life goal of also being a collector with a reasonably good collection. I'd mainly go for SNES, PS1/2 games since those were my childhood favorites. But the thing is that a lot of games are getting more and more expensive. Like others have pointed out, unless you've been doing this for decades like John Hancock and Metal Jesus have been doing, among a few dozen others, it'll be a major test of luck and patience. Otherwise it's now simply too expensive. That and as much as I love the idea of being a collector, I'd rather own games that I'd actually want to own and play.

I love playing GB/GBA games on my tv using the retron5 .
I've had to buy an original NES system ( top loader ) due to the R3 and R5 NES slot completely dying. Top pin , 5th from the left failed in both.

I remember when I was debating on either getting the retron 5 or the retro trio. I decided to get the retro trio as that can play flash carts. such as the ever drives. where the retron 5 can not do that. at least not yet. maybe with an update to the system. I say if your barely starting out collecting, the best thing to do is learn about emulation, at least for retro games. as game prices have gone through the roof on retro games. especially for the sought after titles. I myself only own 1 mega man 2 from the series, but at least through emulation I can play the expensive mega man 5 for nothing. or even games like little samson, or even stadium events. I know I will never own a physical copy of any of those rare, expensive games but at least I can play them thanks to emulation.

I collect for my childhood systems. So I can pass on my experiences to my children one day.
Got a question. How do you deal with an expensive find. Seeing you are a family man. I know many of your games are worth alot of money to some. But for those games you haven't gotten yet? Also. Do you think you should get the games that are expensive for the right reasons as in them being fantastic like Turtles in Time or Wild Guns or just go get a repro. Awesome vids man. Keep em up

+Pholiage Get repros for the expensive ones. That is what I would do now, and plan on getting a few for the ones I dont have yet. I just bought a repro for Magical Chase for TG 16. At the end of the day I am just thankful for what I have.

I was lucky to have been getting games since Atari. I no longer have my Vectrex or 2600 unfortunately. I finally got a Genesis recently. Some guy decided to sell his childhood. Just $40 bucks with four games. I was ecstatic. I managed to get all the shinobi games. So far my favs are Dreamcast, SNES and DS. I always recommend getting what you like to play first. Xbox 360 and PS3 has some very nicely priced stuff right now.

There is another way to look at it. I love original feel to gaming, so I have ~10 retro consoles (year 2000 and earlier), and ~5 games for all of them together. Depends on do you want to collect games for the sake of collecting, or you just want to have full experience. At the end of the day, I just want to play Popful Mail on my European pal sega cd using original sega controller on my original, beautiful console. It's just the disc has a label of verbatim on it. Yes, it is piracy, then again, no developers profits from you buying game for 400$ 20 years after release. Not a good way, not something I would support or be proud of, but still a considerable option.

The trend seems to be that people collect what they grew up with first, and either just stick with that or branch out over time. For me I have to do the big three that were around when I was younger. The NES was on it's way out, the SNES was there for my younger year and the N64 had some solid titles. I might get into Sega, or Atari but right now I want to just get everything I had and played when I was a kid

I started collecting about 3 years ago. The reason it's been highly affordable for me is because I only collect what I want to play. I'll buy 10 games, keep 1 or 2 and sell the rest to break even :)
Only started with the SNES fairly recently though. Fuck, I have no idea how I'm going to get the good games for that system at a good price

  • @eusouomaxim0

I'd really like to start my own retro game collection, starting with the SNES, the console I basically grew up playing. The SNES itself isn't very expensive but the games are very pricy. I guess it'll take time, money and a lot of patience.
