I believe Dante's Divine Comedy was finished/'published' only 15 years after the completion of these frescoes. In that book, the father of the patron who commissioned this chapel is depicted "as the most notorious practitioner of this sin" of usury.
I’ve just come back from this chapel and this video is a beautiful explanation of Giotto’s work. The colours in the chapel are still beautiful and bright.
"...it is what she sees that bites her..." I'd snap for that, that was deep. Such a clever way to depict envy. So many things can bite you, but why not the snake, who is associated with deceit? I bet his tail is lodged within her heart which is "deceitful above all things" (Jer 17:9). It makes for a cool thought exercise, too: how can the other virtues and vices be represented that incorporates Biblical instruction? I'm gonna do some digging for Giotto's thoughts on that.
