  • A documentary on the life and entire artistic production of Giotto (1267-1337), considered the greatest of all the Italian Gothic painters. The innovations and originality that Giotto brought to the art world have influenced all artists since. His life and art are presented here -- from Assisi to Rome, Rimini to Padova and, of course, in his own Florence. Giotto was considered ""the principal painter of our time"" by both Petrarch and Dante, major Italian Renaissance poets. He was an apprentice to the painter Cimabue and learned the art of fresco from him. Fresco is the art of painting with a water-based paint on moist lime plaster. Giotto brought a naturalism to his work which differed from the formality of the past. He was especially known for his lifelike figures, bright colors and intense, blue backgrounds.
    Director: Arturo Sbicca
    Narration: Clive Rich

Giotto is one of my inspiration since when i was 14. His art really makes me to feel like I'm one step closer to the Heaven. Thats how good his art is!

I think some people have already mentioned it here in the commentaries, but I say it again: The background music is way way too loud!

As a child I knew the beauty of his works, seeing its likeness in his mentors' paintings. Was moved by this lovely representation of this truly pivotal artist efforts to carry the virtues of the Franciscan order to the world in some of the greatest pieces of architecture then present. My thanks for your considerations of our blessed Giotto.

Excellent visuals and information, but the background music is too loud and annoying.

Totally agree - awesome video, but the loud background music is very disturbing.

I would have enjoyed it so much more if I could have heard the commentary. The music was so intrusive that I muted the soundtrack and relied on the subtitles. Unfortunately these were hilarious “ Giotto” became “Jata” “Jaffa” and all kinds of things but more hilarious Cimabue became “Jim Bowie”. Although fun it detracted from the images. What a pity

I believe that we call him the father of modern art because he introduced linear perspective and takes us out of flat two dimensional paintings

      Correction: “father of renaissance Art”

Both wrong. He is not The "father" of renaissance. Maybe predecessor, at his time

Many fine moments, thanks, but Giottos realism in contrast to the until then dominating byzantine style could be stessed much more. Giotto’s realisme lay the foundation for coming masters.
Also weird/anachronistic to show the cupola of the dome in Florence which was only constructed many years later by Brunelleschi. Same story with the St Peter’s Dome. I also agree on the way to loud music.

The presenter's voice can hardly be heard because of the background noise: loud music and songs. Ridiculous!

What obnoxious music and that birdsong sound was s
    Deafening and inappropriate-
I needed CC to even understand the narrator who has a lovely voice- but to no avail with that shitty soundtrack
Better to have narrated in aancient churches
