Your tying skills are amazing in their economy. You make it look so simple. Varnish brush tip : I find it helpful to cut some fibers off of the base of the brush at a slight taper to reduce the size of the tip. I do this for all my manicure and cyanoacrylate brushes and it makes application a lot more precise.
Wonderful looking fly. I shall give these a good try this season, especially up in Assynt. I know you have done some Clyde style flies, but would love to see some more of them, especially the ones in Reid's book.
Thanks Davie! Yes my main threads are on wide spools, but have several Pearsalls on small spools. I will adjust one or 2 of my bobbin holders to hold the more frequently used wide spools. Presume adjust means pull the legs apart to fix to a wider gape, something i have been cautious about until now. Seems a good idea to keep a holder for smaller, but less used spools tho. Keep up the great work, just brilliant! Very best wishes, Alan
@RngrOnTheEdge Good tip Ringr, thank you! i stretched one of my holders to take the wider spools. One that i keep for smaller spools can still be a bit stiff cos not all my small spools are the same size, your tip should help with that!
@door2yourheart hey, something that i have found to help thread tension is to put a tiny bit of dubbing wax on the 2 brass or steel bumps on the arms that hold the spool. i started doing this when i broke a bobbin because it said i could just bend the arms out.... didnt go so well. anyway try it out! if it doesnt work just wipe it off with a tissue!
Hya Davie! Just a point about transferring small spool silk to large spools. I struggle when i use wide spools on my bobbin holders. The tension is far too much and its hard to wind smoothly, I have to manually pull the thread from the bobbin holder before winding. Sometimes the thread actually snaps if i try winding directly from the bobbin holder, its that tight! What bobbin holder do you use? Sorry for the mither, but its the main drawback with my tying. Thank you for all the clear videos!
Hi Davie, I'm not sure how helpful this might be. There is available on this side of the pond a Midge Bobbin sized for the small spools. I've had mine for a number of years, only used occasionally, but handy. I'm not sure who makes them, perhaps GAC could resource them? All the best, Peter.
Hello Davie, Thanks so much for this and all your videos. I really enjoy them and have learned a lot. I am wondering if there is a place in the U.S. to purchase plover and also English grouse skins. My usual supplier doesn't have plover and only offers the packaged grouse, which contains lots of unusable material. Thanks for any help you can give.
Hi Jim, I'm using a Law Vise but unfortunately the gentleman that made them has stopped, if you do a search you will find lots of info on it.. All the very best Davie

Hi James, I use Prepared Fly Tyers wax which comes from a wholesale company called Veniards so any shop that stock their materials should be able to help you...The wax I use is hard but what I do to soften it is to hold it under the warm water tap to soften it then I pull off a small piece the size and thickness of a small button...I then work it between my fingers until it becomes tacky, I then stick it to the side of my finger until I need it..The warmth of my finger keeps the wax soft enough to use as well.. All the very best Davie
Davie Thanks for the fine tip of the wax use are using for the Pearsalls / or other thread. Top fly pattern, looks like it would catch anywhere. I believe the plover hackle points make a reasonable jungle cock substitute when varnished.
Another simple but effective fly Mr.McPhail. Do you find this fly to be more effective when you fish it on the swing or dead drifted?
It is very difficult to get hold of plover wings these days. What do you suggest as a good alternative ? Thanks

Where would i find the hard wax you use on your thread?
What is the name of the wax you use. I have some purified bees wax but it is very hard,
