  • This video features David Driver, Lawrence Shultz and August Hunicke..
These three men have put in a combined effort that has forever changed the tree care industry. It was a pleasure to meet and get to know them and also watch them work.
Got some decent video too. I particularly like the opening shot
This video was private for the last decade, and I honestly forgot about it.
This is just a few shots from tape 1 (of 2) .
I learned something from this one... very cool.. look at the first slow motion shot.... notice the point of impact, goes off screen for just a minute, but you ca see the torn bark on the padding log. I put that padding log in place, and AM pretty sure that this piece would have hit the curb to if it wasn;t there.. So what can we learn..
Looks to me like David was right... if the piece was cut shorter it would have cleared.. However he already knew that so that;s just confirmation. Looks like the piece was tied off at its base, which caused it to rotate as it came down the speedline. the rotation actually pushed the top back towards the curb. I wonder if the speeline was tied up near the center of balance if it would make a difference here. I think it would .. only way to tell for sure would be to run that scenario and watch it in slow motion..
The angle of the line was also a major factor. IMO , much more important that the tautness. There are ways to change that as well, though having the piece jump into the block is a valid concern.
    Anyhow cool piece of video.
.Also my mentor John Grier talks about the sling on negative rigging sliding down into your lines below and shows a picture of his pants getting ripped after being caught by the loving sling.
Take that under advisement, especially in spring, when the bark is loose and working with tulip etc..

Absolutely Astounding. The multiple factors of houses, dogwoods and other desirable plantings (to heck with the burning bush but 10 years ago maybe no one knew) and the lines of all the individuals in the tree are overwhelming. The collective knowledge and experience of all of these people likewise is mind boggling, in the best of ways. The rigging is incredible. I would watch the entire tape one and tape two in actual time and feel privileged to do so. So glad this showed up just now. Wonder what got that old oak tree. The other trees look healthy enough. To my uneducated eye anyway.

That was a monster... do you remember that piece of deadwood that let go on the upswing and flew right over my head... had to duck on that one and I was standing 50' away from the rigging point

@@murphy4trees I do remember that. David called that out before it happened. 😉

@@NHlocal Not the way I remmeber it. I was standing on the land owned by the condo well away from the action and he didn't want me standing on their proprty so I stoold EXACTLY where he told me to. I was such a freak thing and so cool that I was able to calmly duck right under it. If I was 12" higher I would have gone to the hospital... Such a unique experience, that I appreciate the amazing nature of this life... Also a lesson about trusting my own insticnts...

Seeing the top of that tree sway 5 feet after topping it...akin to the old timers topping a spar tree. I can only imagine!!!

This video blew my mind. The skill level here is epic. Also the camera shots and cuts on the film is excellent. One of my favorite tree videos ever.
