Stick-drop at 5:15 happens to every drummer, but the recovery isn't normal. If you listen to the audio of that part you would never tell the drummer was minus a stick. Absolutely awesome recovery. And yes, I would put you ahead of Bostaph. Those double-duty Anthrax/Slayer shows must've been insane. Respect!
i was 12, at a Christian Camp during school holidays and one of the kids had Reign in Blood on Cassette. Id never heard slayer and when i heard this track .. the whole "Enter to the realm of Satan" part .. the hair on my arms and neck stood up ... i was utterly hooked on this band from that point on due to these 2 tracks. I remember it like it was yesterday every time i hear this now 45....
Best version of jesus saves I've heard, hands down. I don't think bostaph much less lombardo ever attempted that during the chorus. 4:26 - and oh yeah, I want sound edge hi hats now.
Paul Burkett I never put anything past Lombardo. He's still the most impressive drummer I have ever seen live. Dette is by far the best replacement for him. He's just a monster in these videos!
John is the only drummer to get close to the style ,sound ,power and execution that Dave lombardo bought to slayer , maybe it's something to do with Dave and John both being left handed ? John has the ability to play with that feeling that everything is just on the edge of control , A true soldier of thrash .
John is as close as to Dave Lombardo you can get. Hes incredible the power, the speed. The control, the timing it is right in the pocket. And a very nice guy.

i was there, and john did an amazing job, remember that he played for anthrax on the same day, then the following night did a back to back set with slayer AND anthrax at luna park. he nailed it.
I personally think Dette is much closer to Dave’s drumming. And honestly, all 3 are freakin great! Lombardo, Dette, and Bostaph respectively. However, each had a unique style in their own ways on their stints with Slayer I believe.
Playing fast lefty is a trip. Cool fact - Lombardo is actually left handed too but plays right handed. I play right handed cuz I couldn’t rearrange my buddies kit every time I wanted to play it.
I'm a lefty, but I was playing the hi-hat with my left hand and starting my rolls with the right, so my drum teacher told me I'd either have to learn to play the hi-hat righty or start my rolls with my left, so I switched to playing everything right-handed - that was easier for me.
Wow, listen I think Paul is a killer drummer, but this farewell tour he lagged at times. Some tom fills felt like he faded at the end of em. Even his double bass seemed off. John, on the other hand is solid. He hits hard like Dave. Why didn't they continue on with him?
Bostaph's double bass live has ALWAYS been a bit "sloppy" IF you will (as much as I love his playing) especially compared to Lombardo. And then there's the LAST SLAYER CD, where the double bass (limited at THAT) is just BURIED IN THE MIX...??? 🤔😔 Ohhh well. The WHOLE 80s, mostly 90s stuff is the shyitt. And they NEVER disappointed LIVE! SLAYER FOREVER! 🤘🔥🤘
I really dont know why slayer dint leave this guy full time. His playing is way more tight than Paul (paul is a good drummer) this guy has tight double bass and he looks way more flexible.
Jon is left-handed, so it would look odd to the lay person looking at him from this angle. Jon is a very rare drummer in that he plays with a left-handed kit setup. Most people when they are learning to drum learn to drum right-handed because the vast bulk of kits are set up for right-handed players, and the time and effort it takes, especially if you are being taught by a drum teacher to reverse the setup means most learn to play right-handed. That is hihat to the left snare in the middle, ride on the right. So, Jon leads with his left foot, as opposed to his right. Single foot work is his left foot, leaving his right for double bass drum fills. From this angle it looks as if the pedal which moves less on the right hand side of the kit is an unmoving double bass pedal beater. It's not, it's just his right beater for his right kick drum. Hope this helps.

@@jamescon55 No, I wasn't around when Divine Intervention came out - I only saw them open for Venom at the Santa Monica Civic in 1985 and interviewed them and D.R.I. backstage the same at the Country Club in Reseda, and they were also my favorite band at the time and Dave Lombardo was my favorite drummer and also the reason I quit drums and switched to guitar in 1986. So yeah, Paul Bostaph is a good drummer, but not right for Slayer - he lacks the groove, energy, passion, intensity and raw punk rock aggression that Dave has. Also, Divine Intervention is worst Slayer album - the songs are mostly filler that sound like rejects from Seasons In The Abyss, and the drums aren't in sync with the guitar riffs, especially on the fast parts. A lot of Slayer fans hate Diabolus In Musica because it's "nu metal" (actually groove metal meets thrash), but the songs were way better on that one than on DI, and Bostaph's drumming style fit much better with the more groove-oriented style. But overall, Slayer hasn't put out a great album since Seasons In The Abyss, but the two they made after Dave came back are pretty good, and Repentless is better than I thought it would be and features Bostaph's best full-on thrash playing.

Makes me wonder because his high speed double kicks are spot on here when Bostaph's are always sloppy and uneven. Even on the records.

The guys out front MAINLY care about that snare time, THAT is how "they" play together and what they mainly care about, the double bass is on the drummer and doesn't jack with them. Yes, this guy has the best double bass out there, but it isn't any good if he can't keep time, and I don't know why Paul doesn't keep his double bass up, at one time he was A MASTER, but one thing Slayer KNEW was that they could count on his timing, which IS why they kept going back to him.
