Dude, you’re like one of the few that actually made what I was looking for! Thanks a lot!
In my opinion the gravel bike shoes should have been there all along for road cycling as well. They shouldnt be advertised as solely for gravel as maybe 9 out of 10 people want walkable road cyling shoes. But literally no one is making them🤯 Biggest gap in the cycling market if you ask me!
Only Fizik has seen the light and came out with the Tempo Beat recently. Check them out!
To all other cycle companies out there watching and reading: MAKE WALKABLE ROAD CYCLING SHOES!

I’m pretty sure that I’m out of tune with the marketing scheme of the whole gravel rabbit hole of accessories but, I like using toe cages. They give me the up stroke power and I can wear any shoe that I can cram into the cage, like my 5 10 MTB shoes, my top siders, my hiking shoes. Crocs are tough to ram into the cages. The best thing about riding my bike in gravel is that I can call myself a gravel rider now, adding to my title of MTBer, and general around cyclist.

I have always used SPD pedals and MTB shoes with my road bike and other bikes, I like to be able to walk around without looking like a penguin.

im just using my old mtb pedals which are combi pedals. one side for clipping in and the other side without. this gives me 2 advantages. one i can use the flat side if the terrain is very sketchy and i dont want to be clipped in and two i can use normal shoes when i go for a slow and easy ride with my little kids. seems to be the best of two worlds to me.

The ideal gravel shoe before gravel specific shoes came out were cross country shoes which have always just been road shoes with SPD mounts. Really, that's it. However, the new gravel shoes are worth moving over from MTB/XC shoes because they are burlier than road shoes (win) and not as bulky as MTB/XC specific shoes. MTB specific shoes aren't made for long miles on the road (even a gravel road) and they get uncomfortable quick.
Gravel specific shoes really do deserve their own place especially if you're into bikepacking where you'll be walking around on ground a lot once you reach your destination. I got a pair of "Sidi MTB Gravel" shoes which are basically road shoes on steroids and nothing like their MTB shoes. Awesome for the task and at a great price too and they mate up perfectly to my XT pedals.

Are they the Shimano PD-EH500 SPD Pedals? Thinking on grabbing these for my gravel bike which will also be a commute bike to school (so I can use the flat side with my casual school sneakers). Are they too heavy? Or do they flip around when you take your feet off because then sides are weighted differently? Do they still perform well as a clip less pedal?

I've recently switched from spd (Shimano xt) to spd sl (time xspresso) clips. I mainly ride Gravel in the Netherlands where you don't have really nasty trails with a lot of clipping in and out or even walking. Therefore I prefer the road pedals over mtb pedals because the don't have that much play and a wider / stiffer platform... When riding on really nasty trails or bad weather conditions with a lot of mud and slippery sections I switch them over to mtb pedals. It just depends on how much 'footwork' there is on your ride what's the best pedal to use...

I used SIDI MTB shoes with LOOK PP286 ARC on my Colnago. That way when you got off you could stand properly flat to the ground instead of balancing on the cleats on road shoes. This was in 96ish

I used road pedals and shoes once on a gravel ride because I didn’t want clunky heavy feel of 2 bolt mtb shoe -I wanted light stiff and fast like on road bike. the first time I stepped off in anything but pavement I had issues clipping back in, walking in gravel in 3 bolt is a nightmare, even a single blade of grass kept me from clipping in. I Discovered the rx8 shoe, they feel like my road sphyres but in a 2 bolt and much cheaper. My problems were solved. My opinion is yes, “gravel” shoe makes sense, not as clunky as mtb shoe, but more useable off-road than a road shoe.....kinda like a gravel bike itself.

So for the last three years of Gravel/CX biking I just transferred my old mountain bike XT pedals over to my CX bike. The only thing that I have noticed is after about 3 hours my feet start to get hot points on them. I probably need to stop more and stretch. I have thought of just putting road pedals on but when you're walking in gravel, mud, sand those road shoes are not very good and those conditions.

As a recreational rider I also only use SPD MTB Cleats/Shoes (not SPD-SL) on Road Bikes. Just for the Walking :-)
And it is nice to see more Gravel Shoes, that are lighter and closer in design to Road Shoes, but with SPD cleats and a stiff sole that works great on road bikes.
SPD-SL/Look.... etc. are good if you do racing, and on a raodbile they can give you an advantage, but that is not for me riding for fun. My favorites are Fizik Overcurve X3, Shimano RX800 and some MTB Versions from Gaerne (so comfy).

I bought a pair of nice flat pedals and tried on my gravel bike… maybe psychological but I was really scared pedalling, specially on descents… and now back on my clip-less road pedals … however I am now toiling with the idea of MTB pedals because walking in a road shoe is really really annoying.

XTs are nice, but shimano SPD is a really solid pedal/cleat, way more than spd-sl, it has kinda peaked technology wise, even the 20 dollar versions are good and will probably last you a lifetime. only real differences are weight.

I really like the Speedplays because the shoe has a little left-right “play” or movement when clipped in. My knees are much happier with this.
Do any of these gravel pedals have a similar amount of movement? Or are they all locked in solid?

Hello Taren, I am have bought my first Gravel bike, i plan to use it 80% road and 20% gravel, however idk what pedals would be best for me, specially because I want to be able to walk whenever I disengage my feet from the pedal, not sure if buying mtb pedals and gravel shoes would be better for me instead of road shoes and pedals. If I buy Gravel shoes and mtb pedals, would I have any issues during while I do road journeys (+100km)? Or would be better to buy two separated shoes and pedals for gravel and road?
    Thanks in advance!

Hey Taren, what's the difference between the gravel and mountain bike shoe?

    • @lukesperling564
      @lukesperling564 4 ปีที่แล้ว

An XC race mtb shoe will basically be the same as a gravel shoe, both will have a stiff sole that’s carbon or another composite, and are designed for efficiency as well as being able to walk in them. You want to stay away from more trail or DH oriented shoes, because those are floppy and designed solely for comfort, they have a similar sole to a skateboarding shoe. I run the Fizik Terra X5 shoes, they’re not too expensive if you find them on sale and they’re stiff enough for good power transfer.
