    This is an issue with Tamron lenses. It's well documented on their compatibility page. The G2 lenses can be updated with firmware but nothing older. Sigma lenses work fine with the FTZ adapter incidentally.

      That pretty much sums it up. I ended up going with the sigma 70 to 200 and I love it.

    Bill, please keep us posted if there's been any traction. I also have a couple of Tamron's and I've been contemplating picking up a Z series body but may hold off for now if there are compatibility issues.

    Sold my Tamron 24-70 2.8 Vc (like yours) as it wasn't compatible with my Z6. That lens does not work with tap in console. I got the 24-70 F4 kit lens and I'm not missing the stops of light as the Iso on Z series is amazing. Kit lens is lighter too.
    Enjoying your channel. Best wishes from Sweden.

    Bill that's a real shame your D750 lenses have compatibility issues, very helpful vlog for others thinking of upgrading to the Nikon Z5 with similar lenses.

      In a way I'm almost glad that it's pushing me into some new more modern gear. Not really looking forward to spending the money but I'm really liking the 24 to 70 that I just got.

      It’s not the Nikon camera that has incompatibility issues as Nikon never promised their system would be compatible with Tamron. It’s TAMRON that sold a lens they stated is compatible with Nikon. Hold Tamron accountable as it’s not Nikon’s responsibility. Just sayin mate. 🤷

    Same situation for some prime Sigma lenses, where they won't auto-focus, or misread the exposure. They issued a confirmation statement of what they called "phenomena" associated with the Z mount, and that a firmware update was in the making to resolve the issue. Updating a sigma does require a special dongle that's sold separately and is not available in all regions, so buying a new sigma for the z-mount does feel like a gamble which necessitates testing before leaving the shop if possible.
    To me this highlights one of the key issues about the camera market. You're paying thousands of dollars on gear only to realize that in order to use it to full capacity, you need more gear.
    Recharging a Z5 while it's switched on (one of the highlights of this new generation) requires a special USB 'cable' from Nikon, that is once more, sold separately!
    The whole market operates on the basis of scarcity. I expect parts to become less available, and more expensive as they try to make up for the lost market share to the smartphone industry, which seems to be always ahead for some reason.

    • @BillEricPhotography
      @BillEricPhotography  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good points. There are so many interchangeable working parts with a camera and it’s accessories, and the technology associated with each, that’s it’s getting increasingly difficult to make sure they all work together. And the camera manufacturers are taking advantage of that by selling us expensive extras.

    Hi Bill, I actually just picked up the Z5 as well. I originally passed on the Z6 and Z7 as I have the Tamron G2 Trinity and they did not seem to focus the same as they do on my D850. I will say that all those issues all seem gone now with the Tamron lens firmware updates and the year plus development from the Z6/7 to the Z5. I did pick up the Nikkor 24-70 f4 S lens with the Z5 and I will tell you the Tamron 24-70 G2 focuses faster and resolves the same. If you have the option to try the Nikkor 24-70 2.8 version(I know...big price tag)(Maybe look at the Tamron 24-70 G2 as an option?) I would strongly recommend it! It really is a big difference in focus speed. Love the videos you and Eric put out and look forward to all the content you will be creating with this new Z5....as I have a vested interest on how you like it:-)

    • @BillEricPhotography
      @BillEricPhotography  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Michael, the 24 to 70 F4 is a really nice lens and I think it will suffice for me right now. I would definitely love to have a 2.8 version but I only paid $500 for this lens by trading in some gear worth that much. So it was an economical decision for sure. I really like the way my Sigma 70 to 200 works on the Z5 so I'm not against trying out the Tamron g2. I do like having a native mountain lens the camera feels much better and more balanced.

    Same here, Z5 + Tamron 24-70 G1. I've seen a post on dpreview forum that latest firmware on the lens is fixing some issues, so I passed my to service to apply the firmware update. Also updated my Z5 to the newest available FW. Nothing changed, problem still exists. I will ship this lens and aquire newer tamron G1 which is working without issues, or a nikkor if my budget will allow for that.

    • @BillEricPhotography
      @BillEricPhotography  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the G2 might be a better bet. From what I understand the G1 versions don't work well with the Z5. Maybe look at the sigma equivalent. My sigma 70 to 200 worked perfectly right out of the box.

    I just upgraded from a Z50 to a Z5 a couple weeks ago. I have a Tamron 45mm v1.8 VC lens which I purchased used at a great price. When I tried to use it on my Z50 I experienced the same problem. I tested it on my older Nikons, a D90 and an F100. It worked great on the older cameras. I had the lens sent to Tamron for a free firmware update and it now works perfectly on my Z5 and old Z50. I gambled and upgraded my old Tamron 90mm f2.8 macro to the most recent version with VC. Once again the issue was present on the Z5 and Z50 while it worked great on my D90 and F100. I had the firmware updated. It's better but on my Z5 it's still playing the diva and working when it wants. I'm disappointed. I wanted this lens because it's a Tamron, this lens has historically been a great lens, and I really want the VC on this lens. Perhaps if I was happier with the focus peaking I wouldn't mind manual focus. Maybe that will change as I gain experience with this camera. Film is dragging me kicking and screaming into buying more gear and the last thing I want is multiple collections of F, Z, and OM mount lenses besides the inevitable future additions. I'm not sure how I'll handle this but I'm not planning on jumping ship from Nikon.

    • @BillEricPhotography
      @BillEricPhotography  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you just need to research which lenses work with the z mount. I have a Viltrox 35 mm 1.8 that works perfectly on the z cameras. I also have a sigma 70 to 200 that works well. My older tamrons did not so I sold them. Hopefully the third-party camera manufacturers will start to come out with lenses specific to this mount. They really haven't yet but hopefully soon

    Thanks so much, I'm trying to decide on buying a 3 yr old Z5, or the 5 yr old 7500, that I can use my DX lenses on. I have a D300 I just brought out to play with, and it hasn't been used in 13 yrs, with the advent of cell phone photos. I have several Nikkor lenses, so will just need the adaptor. This Z5 hopefully would last me a long time, but I think the not using the D300 has lead to the thumb and command wheel issues it seems to be having. I loved that camera, and hate to see the wheels not working properly.. This was a good video

    My Z50 and Z5 have had no issue with older F mount Sigma HSM lenses via the FTZ, but my with older Tamron's they would not work at all (even after updating camera firmware, however this was not a shock as none of the older Tamron's seem to be listed at all in any published compatibility charts for the Z mount bodies). My newer Tamron lenses (G2 versions etc onwards) seem to have no issues at all though, with the exception of my 150-600mm G2 which did not work full stop, but that was quickly cured by using the Tamron Tap-In console to update the lenses firmware and it works perfectly now.

    This is EXACTLY my problem. I have the exact ame lens/camera combo (my backup is my old D700) but the consistency is meh, pretty much the same, I guess. i did a shoot in London last night and so many images did this. I felt like an amateur and I did lose some confidence - like "What am I doing wrong?" and just went back to th D700 as I know it and we're a good team. I only got my Z5 a day ago, too! Kinda scary when you got clients who want good quality. Early days, yet, bro!

    • @BillEricPhotography
      @BillEricPhotography  24 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I had heard that Nikon had worked out the problems with the Z5. I do notice every now and then my z62 will also hunt and I miss focus. I think the autofocus on a mirrorless camera is just a little bit different than what we were used to in a DSLR. There might be a little bit of a learning curve as you learn the camera. I know Eric doesn't have any focus issues with his Canon R5. It's pretty rock solid when it comes to autofocus. I notice my Nikon z62 is not as good.

    • @neilfoulks5521
      @neilfoulks5521 24 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@BillEricPhotography Thanks for that, man. Like we say, it's early days. I'm doing another shoot next Saturday for a similar house music event and tempted to take the D700 and just use the Z5 for video. That way, I'm 100% sure I'll smash it!🤩

    • @BillEricPhotography
      @BillEricPhotography  24 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @neilfoulks5521 I would try to shoot around with the Z5 this week and use it. It's probably not a better ISO performance than the d700. So even if you have to kick up the ISO a little bit the images will be cleaner.

    • @neilfoulks5521
      @neilfoulks5521 24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@BillEricPhotography ISO was set to Auto when I bought it, and I always shoot manual with as low ISO as possible to help reduce noise. Never really been a problem and I rarely use the AI noise reduction to DNG in Lightroom or even the slider in the "old days" lol. I would never dream of going to 10,000 ISO. Do you know if there's a quicker way of using the LR noise reuction by AI than waiting for each picture to edit itself? (Sorry if it's off subject, but that's what's stopping me getting the edit done right now). As for using it during the week, be hard to get into a situation where there's loads of people who'd be throwing themselves in front of the camera for kicks til the weekend! hahaha🤣🤣😂😂

    For everyone's information, I was alarmed by this video in the first instance but later found out that, yes, Tamron have issues with the Z5, but i found out that all my 3 Sigma EX series have no issues at all. Focuses fast and delivers good images.

    I sold my Tamron 70-300mm VC for this AF issue, VC worked great , but AF was constantly missing the point. Sold it , bought Tamron 70-210 F4 VC instead , and that works as intended , no AF issue, the shots come out razor sharp. Take in account. Not just Z5 or other Z series cameras face these issue, but other brands too. Check compatibility charts in 3rd party manufacturers sites.

    Definitely firmware issue / incompatibility.
    Here's my experience with a nikon D850 - i had it since launch in late 2017. After i got the camera i tested a native Nikon 50mm 1.8g on it, and the same exact phenomenon occurred in live view mode - locks focus for a second then shifts out of focus immediately, but no issues in optical viewfinder. The lens was updated by nikon service center and it had worked since then.
    The issue is these older non-G2 Tamron lenses (i call them gold ring Tamrons) are no longer supported by Tamron. I'm fortunate that my Tamron and Sigma lenses are newer models which works perfectly with my Nikon Z6.

    I had the same issue when I bought a Nikon Z50. I could no longer auto focus with both my Sigma and Tamron lenses. However, all I needed to do was to buy the Sigma USB Dock UD-01 and the Tamron TAP-in Console and update both lenses with new firmware. All of the issues were gone. I no longer have the Z50 but I am thinking that I might buy the Z5 and I believe that the issues you and I experienced will not be there with the new Z5. Save yourself money and update your lenses.

      This video is a little bit older. I have since moved on to the Nikon z62 and some native z lenses. I still have a few FML lenses and they work fine with the adapter. My tamrons were G1 versions and they were not compatible even with updates.

  • @BigWhiskey91
    @BigWhiskey91 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Hey! I think the G2 series Tamrons will work after they are updated. From my understanding, the older series that you have cannot be updated so it’s unlikely you will ever be able to get them to work. I owned a copy of the G2 70-200 on my d750 and it was a phenomenal lens

    • @BillEricPhotography

    I was planning on buying a Z5 but now I'm not so sure, so thanks for the heads-up. I use back button focussing instead of the double press of the shutter button, I use the focus lock button to focus then a single press of the shutter button. The reason for that is that on the D5600 it was annoying sometimes when the camera didn't agree with what I wanted to focus on. Maybe that would be worth a try?

    • @BillEricPhotography
      @BillEricPhotography  ปีที่แล้ว

      I use back button focusing as well. I don't think it mattered with this camera. I just think the auto focus was off. This is a little bit of an older video so the newer versions I'm sure are fine by now. Other than that issue I really liked the camera.

    That would be s challenge. As indicated prior only G2 lenses for you focal lengths. I did by the Tamron 100-400 selling off the Nikon 70-200 with 1.7 teleconverter for the weight and extended length. The lens works great.
    I also have the Nikon 24-70g which produces excellent photos on the adapter.

    And this is exactly why I am happy I bought the D780. I have 3 Tamron lenses 24-70 f2.8, 70-200mm f.2.8 and 150-600mm f.5/6.3 all first gen lens, I walked into a local store and he was honest and said this happens with 3rd party. I think the reason the Z series are cheaper than the d780 is due to the glass being insane for the money. I wish you the best but this give me reassurance that I made the right call getting the D780 over Z5, Z6, Z7 or even the new Z6ii or the Z7ii.

      @BillEricPhotography  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've been doing a little research and the g2 versions of those lenses all work perfectly. It seems most of the Sigma art lenses all work with this camera too so I think it's just a matter of the lenses being older. I definitely like the camera and don't regret getting it. I did think about returning it and getting the d780 but but mirrorless seems to be the future and the one lens for the z-mount that I have is very nice.

      Unlike manual lenses, any electronic dependent lenses can have backward compatibility issue, that may even include Nikkor. Hence, since I bought my D3 back in 2008, I have decided to buy Nikkor lenses, such as the lens trinity to avoid such headache in the future.
      After four decades and two rounds of buying new Nikkor lenses (AI & AF-S), I'm not sure I'll consider another round with the S lenses. Beside the NOCT of course, if my ship comes in. 🙂

    I bought the same Meike grip for my Z5. Amazing how that extra bit of grip helps. Did you remove the battery door from the camera and install it on the grip? I did, it fit perfect. Just a heads up, when you do that you lose the weather seal around the battery compartment. To fix that I cut thin lengths of peel&stick weather stripping and put it around the opening for the battery door on the top side of the grip. It seals against the camera base and bam weather sealed once again!

    Subscribed today 👍🏻. Thank you for the great video. You hit some very interesting points. I too have the D750. I remember the hype for that camera when it came out. People were almost selling their first born to get one. Lol. Now it’s considered old which is also funny. I said it would be my last camera I’d ever need. But I now like the idea of a totally silent body. I bought into Sony a6000 and a6400. I love silent shooting but they can’t handle noise like the D750. It’s not even close. So I’m wanting the Z5 because I also don’t do video. If I could make my D750 a silent shooter I’d keep it forever. I also have Lightroom Version 5. (If I remember correctly) and it’s a paid for version so no monthly fee but also no more support for it. Purchasing a new body means having to purchase editing software now too. I don’t shoot as much as I used too so I was hoping to eliminate learning a new editing system and also paying for it. I know it’s not much it’s the point I don’t use it enough to justify continually paying. What editing software do you like for this? Thanks again for a great video. 👍🏻

      Happy to help! I think the Z5 would serve you well and I only use Adobe Lightroom through the subscription so I really don't have any other recommendations for you as far as editing software goes. Maybe the camera comes with a bundled software that would work good enough for what you're doing.

    You have to let me know your impressions of the 24-70mm f/4S. It’s really a great lens! It’s extremely sharp from edge to edge, and it’s so light and compact.
    Take a look at that photo I just posted of the moon setting over the Bridge. This was taken with the new 70-200mm f/2.8S native lens. The detail in the bridge is unbelievable! You can literally see the rivets on the bridge! I know it’s expensive, but if I were you, I would bite the bullet and buy this lens instead of spending your money on a used F-mount 70-200. When I first bought the Z7, I adapted my Nikon 70-200, and it worked great! No problem at all with the autofocus; it locked on every time. But what I did notice, and it really bothered me (because of my OCD😉), is that the autofocus is a bit noisy. These Z-Mount lenses, with their dual autofocus motors are so quiet, you don’t even know they’re focusing.

    • @BillEricPhotography
      @BillEricPhotography  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I totally get what you're saying about getting that lens but for right now it may not be in the budget. I just want a lens that's going to work well I'm not that concerned about hearing a focus motor. I was completely happy with my old Tamron so I imagine the Nikon version of something the same age is going to be as good or better. So far I like the 24 to 70. It was delivered yesterday. Very fast focusing just about silent and it balances on the camera very nicely. I like how much smaller it is also.

    The best and worst thing about mirrorless cameras is the ability to adapt lenses. I’m still migrating from Nikon to Sony and love adapting lenses from different manufacturers or lens mounts but it also gets frustrating when they don’t work as you’d want. Vintage manual focus lenses are a blast to use. Some autofocus lenses work amazing and others leave a lot to be desired. The main reason I began the switch to Sony instead of the Nikon Z system was the third party lenses such as the tamron 17-28, 28-75, and 70-180 F2.8 lenses. They’re much cheaper than the Sony glass and I love them all. Hopefully they eventually get those lenses out in a Z Mount (and Sigma’s versions as well). While that wouldn’t solve you’re issues it would give you a more cost effective option.

    • @BillEricPhotography
      @BillEricPhotography  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is nice to have the less expensive lenses but I've learned over the years that once you buy one of these expensive lenses you tend to hang on to it for quite a while. so with that in mind if I have to spend a little more and buy the Nikon version I know that I will have them for years to come.

I also have some old manual focus 1.8,2,2.8 (back from the 70's) that I still use them with my D500 but the crop factor limit my shoot - Am I will be able to use them with the Z5 ad get advantage of the Full Frame??? @BillEricPhotography  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Walt Just saw this. If you have the old screw type motors on your lenses they will not work with the Z5. I had to get rid of some of my old Nikon lenses because they weren't compatible. As far as the crop factor goes if the lens is made for an APS-C camera you're going to have to put the Z5 into DX mode otherwise you will have a black spot around your image. You can always crop into it but either way you're losing some of the pixels on the sensor. The d500 is a great camera and if it's working for you maybe you don't need to upgrade at this point. You could also look into the z50 which would be a more similar camera to your d500. Again the older lenses will not work with it if they are screw focus.

      I'm sure you'll be super happy with the camera. And I've used the 24 to 70 now for a couple of hours and it's a great little lens. You definitely lose a little depth of field but the stabilization with the camera is fantastic.

    Some Tamron Lenses are not compatible with the Nikon "Z" Series; I have the Same problem with my Tamron 24-70 mm; Only the "G2" version are compatible with the "Z" Series, I found out on the Tamron Website that there will be NOT firmware updates for some of the Tamron Lens; So I have to buy a native "Z" 24-70mm OR the new Tamron "G2" Version.

    Comparing only the pictures from D750 and Z5 (not care the use experience etc). How would you call between the two??? Is the Z5 pic quality higher than the D750?

    • @BillEricPhotography
      @BillEricPhotography  ปีที่แล้ว

      No they use the same sensor. It's more in the function of the camera where the differences are.

    • @blizzbee
      @blizzbee ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In that case, can i assume the pics from z5 are obviously inferior to the z6&z7 those they have bsi sensors???
      Are Z6 Z7 pics more lively, better color in general??

    • @BillEricPhotography
      @BillEricPhotography  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To be 100% honest with you I don't notice a difference between my d750 and my z62. At this level of camera I think it's more the photographer than the actual equipment that makes a good image. If I put the same picture from both cameras in front of you you would not be able to tell the difference. I will say the z62 is a little bit better in low light. And the zmount lenses are better lenses in my opinion.

    The lenses are not compatible. You need the G2. I have the Z6 II and that same 24-70mm 2.8. I knew it was a compatible issue before I bought the Z6 II. It on Tamron site. You can manual focus those lenses. I prepared for the new lenses tho. I still have my Tamron 24-70mm 2.8 for my nikon DSLR. I have the nikon 24-70mm f4 S and its the best kit lense I ever used. Really sharp. If I had switched i still would have spent more money. I like detail photoshoots and the color science on the nikons are great. Plus the raw files nice to edit. Nice video tho!
