How awesome! Thank you. I just joined. 😊
I am glad you understand not everyone can afford lavish designs. It inspires me to make my home looks better.
Broke mentality never really goes away, your creativity kicks into high gear! 🙌🏻😆
@@JulieKhuu so true!❤
Aah your family story just made you even more charismatic and approachable!! Love you!
Thank you so much!! 🥹🫶🏻
I love how you are so "down to earth" in terms of decorating and thrifting!
You can never take thrifting away from me! That’s half my home and closet right there! 🙌🏻😉
I’ve been amazed at how much I’m able to do on very little budget. My pry bar and mallet are my best friends. Spent money on paint but saved on labour. For me it’s been a necessity to change up my home after divorce. It’s about taking my power back and giving myself permission to be me. Putting my bedroom downstairs has worked. I graffitied the wood base of my new bed with positive phrases and words and am now able to sleep in the centre of the bed and spread out. It used to feel like there was barbed wire down the middle of the bed. No one can see the graffiti but it’s life changing.
Some of my favorite phrases:
Enjoy the luxury of being yourself. - 1960’s ad
The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure you seek. - Joseph Campbell
What you think of me is none of my business. - Bob Proctor
One day.
Or
Day One…
Every day is Day one.
The World needs more of what YOU have
Everything you are seeking is seeking you.
Now that your dream is fulfilled, how do you feel?
💙
You are a force to be reckoned with Fiona! Love this for you so much! 🙌🏻🫶🏻
@@firestick4991 Thank you! What would you do knowing you couldn’t fail? Love Day One! Love all of your quotes!
@@JulieKhuu Thank you, Julie. I hope the graffiti idea helps others.
Best decorating vid everrr. “A mindset of abundance” & “fake it, til you make it”. Words to live by.
Exactly 🙌🏻💗
Such a great story. My people came here from Ireland and also worked very hard so we would have a better life. That's why I love America.
The American Dream!! 🙌🏻🇺🇸❤️
I immigrated to the USA when I was 12 and grew up in a family of 11. Because of TH-cam videos like yours I think my house look pretty nice even though I didn't spend much on decor.
That’s amazing! Thank you for watching and sharing your experience, makes me so happy knowing that what I do here actually helps 🫶🏻
I do that always, repurpose items, paint and DIY and I don't buy new things very often. I like when things are done on my own way, and with creativity.
That’s the beauty of DIY- cheap, easy, and never has to be perfect! 🙌🏻
I like how you talk to your crew on camera. Inspirational video all around! Thank you for sharing your family's story.
Thanks for watching! I love my crew, it’s easy for me to film myself, but much more fun when they’re involved 🥳
I loved seeing your family photos and hearing your story Julie. My parents both emigrated from India to the UK in the late 60s and your experience growing up really resonates with me. We also helped some of our relatives settle in the UK, living together and sharing what we had. Now everyone is thankfully settled and doing well here we are lucky to have the budget to make major changes to our homes but I love how you make interior design and renovation accessible to all. Regards to you and your family x
Thank you💗! Growing up with not much material wealth has taught me all I need to know about being resourceful 🙌🏻
I will always adore Ebay for CLOTHES shopping. Especially if I'm seeking something specific. Financial necessity made me begin thrifting about 15yrs ago. I still loved the 'good stuff', but couldn't afford it. I could buy new and get something substandard, or shop second-hand and maintain the level of quality I love. Learned a couple of painting skills, and restored several heirloom quality furniture pieces for less than pennies on the dollar. Have found the key is to be discerning and cultivate an eye for quality.
Did you see me poll the team for eBay?! 🤣 These Gen Z’ers were like… huh? eBay? You buy furniture on there? Oh man I feel old! Haha
@@JulieKhuu LOL. To be honest., have yet to source any furniture off ebay. All of my finds have been from thrift stores, fb marketplace and garage sales. Like you, I was floored by the results of your gen z survey.....imo, regardless of age, Ebay remains hands down the best place to source quality clothing on the cheap. Clothes and a few collectable pieces (Christmas stuff in my case)---specific things. Time and again, have spent hours on end combing places like Amazon for decor items---lamps most recently......then became bogged down and stopped...deciding "when it comes, I will know". A couple of weeks later, I walked into my local mom and pop thrift store, and found not one but FOUR different lamps, each unique and of the HIGHEST quality. Their shades alone would run for hundreds of $$ apiece, since even the most basic shades are stupid expensive. LOL Wouldn't you know, each of those four lamps ended up being the PERFECT compliment for the spaces I had in mind. It was incredible. They cost $7 to $10 apiece. :) Another example is our Christmas tree. Had something specific in mind--pencil (thin) about 7ft high, to fit in the corner of our raised-hearth, red distressed brick fireplace. Budgeted $200, and quickly discovered ALL the trees I saw on Amazon and in the physical stores within that price range were total cheap-looking crap. LOL So I gave up, and let it go. A month or two later, I walked into the same mom and pop thrift store, and there it was: a Pencil Christmas Tree.....of OUTSTANDING quality....for $10. Moreover, it was flocked, which I hadn't before considered, and which compliments the red distressed brick of our fireplace to perfection. It was BETTER than I had imagined, and remains a show-stopper during the Holidays; no exaggeration. So I wholeheartedly agree with YOU, Julie, about "putting it out there" to the Universe. I only resort to places like Amazon if I need it "now', and couldn't find anything by thrifting. But those items are few and far between. :) EVERYONE, including the Gen Z's who adore Amazon so much, would benefit greatly from the practice of Thrifting.
Ebay is awesome for house wares and decor items as well. Even furniture.
@@vaderladyl Will keep that in mind. Thanks!!
Inspiring story Julie, thanks for sharing your family history. Hope you all continue to do well 🙏🙏
Thank you so much Jimmy 🙏🏻
Thanks for the reminder about the “abundance mindset!” 😊
You got it! 🙌🏻😉
I LOVE your family's story!

I can't even handle how cute those picture of you are!!!

Omg Julie you are soooo resourceful! And how cute were you as a child, you haven't changed a bit. You were born to do what you do. Thanks for sharing
Thank you so much Gina! My calling definitely found me 🙏🏻💗
I admire the work ethic and family closeness you described. BTW, your hair is beautiful

Awwh! You were such an adorable child. Thank you for sharing.
You are so kind thank you for watching! ☺️🙏🏻
I’m loving your abundant positive energy!
Thank you 🙏🏻 Dream. Believe. Achieve!! 🙌🏻✨
@JulieKhuu, thank you for your thoughtful, cheerful, & encouraging presentation. Your channel is a favorite of mine for the lovely, practical ideas you offer!
Since you asked:
The number one thing I need to do is: declutter!
The second thing is: edit!
I have many beautiful, useful, & beautifully useful iems collected over several decades of living in my 1920s Storybook-style cottage. I need to cultivate the space in order to appreciate what I have gathered.
Thank you bunches for your helpful decorating prompts, Julie!
🙏🌿💐🌿😊💚😘🌿💐🌿🙏
Thank you for watching Sara 🙏🏻💗 Clearly, I’ve been collecting since I was a little girl. Some items I keep for the sentimental value, others simply because they’re unique. When I edit, I try to keep these two priorities in mind. Keeps me in check! Hope that helps 🤗
Love the step-by-step layering you present for setting up a room for success - command/optimal prime, storage, then bringing in & designing the space. Super useful for moving into new space too!
Function first, ALWAYS!! 🙌🏻
I’ll buy paint and tools but do as much as possible myself. Painting/bleaching/making furniture functional pieces had changed my home. I’ve photoshopped my pics and got cheap and custom frames with custom mats. I bought quality curtain rods for 75% off. Still need to make curtains, re-do the seat of my sofa and recover both sofas. Been ripping out old fences, aviaries and garden path for free. Decluttering and organising for my style has been calming. I’m taking it slowly but progress is good.
There’s nothing that makes me happier than working on my home. It’s the Cancer in me. Once you create the ultimate sanctuary with your own two hands, no one can ever take that away from you Fiona! I love it!! 🙌🏻💗
super helpful when you're living at home! loved the thrift store sale secrets
Target donates to Goodwill, Salvation Army has 50% off sales on Fridays (check your local store), Savers gives you coupons if you bring in a bag of donations! Did I miss anything? 🤗
Love that you shared your story. Was your family always supportive of your creative career? You always have great ideas. It's easy to design when money is no object. True ingenuity is when you have to be resourceful. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for watching! I’m the youngest of five children. By the time they got to me, I think they gave up pushing so hard 😂 So yes, Mom was VERY supportive (in fact, interior design was her idea- more on that in a future video). Dad always had an entrepreneurial mindset- he didn’t care what I did as long as I built it myself 💪🏻
Bravo to the thrift shoppers! Better quality and Lowe prices!
Secondhand shopping for life! 🙌🏻
This video hit me hard in the feels. I'm a newlywed and we're financially unstable at the moment, our apartment is missing a lot of basic furniture pieces and I can only afford so much new stuff. I've been browsing secondhand websites nonstop and DIYing wherever I can, but I'm hopeful it will all pay off in the end when I have a beautiful space.
If you have a Restore store/habitat for humanity you can find so much decent furniture and accessories at really good prices.
I’ve been there Yasmeen! My first studio was ALL hand me downs + Craigslist furniture ☺️When I made a bit of money, I would save up for key furniture pieces I knew I would keep (and upcycle) forever! I still have some of the secondhand furniture I collected from my 20s- I’ll keep these forever. Seeing them in my home now that I’m married with children makes my heart so happy. Like I remember the journey it took us to get here 💗 You got this babe!
I feel like I always write this, but I think this might be my favorite video (again 😅) of yours Julie!! I am literally in the situation you described. Oh and you were a darling, darling little girl - so adorable!! What an inspiration your parents must be. I love Craftsy too! I learned to sew when my daughter was a baby. I collected baby and little girls sewing patterns from the 1950's and 60's and sewed her a wardrobe big enough for three children probably! 🤣. But it pretty much took everything we had to buy our little homestead and make the move from San Francisco to Kentucky. Now we literally are "broke". Reestablishing ourselves in a new state, new jobs, etc., and we'll need a little time to build up a nest egg again. And boy, when I say our house is a fixer upper? I am not underselling it! I've actually done several of the suggestions you made in today's video. I sewed some lace trim on some blue velvet drapes I thrifted for my daughter's room. I bought a bucket of joint compound, some wall and art paints, a trowel, and created some pretty cool art wall reliefs in my foyer, dining room, daughter's room and living room. I've also stalked FB Marketplace for some nice solid wood furniture pieces I could never afford new and refinished them or painted them. I want to reupholster my dining room chairs in something really funky, like velvet cheetah if I can thrift the fabric!!! Even though it takes me for-e-ver to finish a project or a room in my house and move to the next one, it's really fun, it gives me a great sense of accomplishment, and I love the result because I "designed" it 😊
Welcome to Kentucky! You will find your way. Lots of wood furniture in Ky.
Thank you for watching and supporting the channel Timilisa, it’s feedback like yours that keep me energized week by week. I love creating these videos when I can hear how they’ve helped you in your own space, so thank you for watching and commenting!! 🙏🏻
Even though I can “afford” nicer things now, I don’t often spend like that. I still comb thrift stores, flea markets, and online secondhand shops every chance I get! It’s the thrill of the hunt that excites me! My upbringing ensures that I’ll be a bargain shopper for life!! 🙌🏻😂
How a mom can be this much beutiful ❤ wish you happy😊🙏
Thank you so much Kong 🙏🏻💗

We have a paint donation center here where paint can be had for free. Oops paint markdowns are a steal in paint stores and big box store paint departments.
Facebook marketplace has free listings and free groups.
Upcycling the right sized art frame with a new picture, fabric or even wallpaper can be lovely.
Pinterest is my favorite source of inspiration for repurposing, upcycling and redoing.

Challenge accepted 🫡
Some of us are widows and widowers living on Social Security… and no extra $ ….not even a dime extra in these inflation ridden….retirement years. Some influencers seem to prefer to act like we don’t exist.
Thanks for understanding.
Thank you for watching Carole 🙏🏻💗 You never really “grow out” of thrifting. It’s embedded in my core at this point 🙌🏻
eBay used to be so great. As a person who expatriated, the reason I gave up on eBay is because they made some deal with Pitney Bowes to handle international shipping. They charge custom brokerage fees and also VAT (import tax) on items that don’t even require the paying of VAT, like used linens, clothes, household goods. France (EU in general) doesn’t charge these taxes on such items, and they don’t require a customs broker, so PB pockets all that money for themselves. I purchased some used Pottery Barn sheets once for 50 USD and was shocked to have to pay 35 USD over the shipping price for Pitney Bowes “services” and taxes to France. On a 50 dollar purchase !
So if any eBayers out there wonder why no one from Europe buys US stuff anymore, that is why. Sometimes if I really want something I just ask sellers to ship it regular USPS with tracking and say what it is “used bedsheets” 50 dollars. Save 35 bucks.
Also, speaking of Pottery Barn sheets and duvet covers, pillow cases etc. I have more than I will ever need thanks to Savers in Berkeley CA for like 6 dollars a set about a decade ago. Organic Egyptian cotton with lovely colours and timeless patterns, high (but not suffocatingly high) thread counts, that were new / almost new when I got them because wealthy people redecorate so often and donate cast-offs to charities. I miss that Savers on University Avenue a lot. 😊😊😊
Oh I didn’t know that! Makes perfect sense why the inventory is so vastly different than 10yrs ago. I used to be able to search a term and get loads of options from all over the world! But you’re right, most of them are US based now and VAT prices are ridiculous!
this is the perfect video for me (i'm broke)
Thinking of rolling out an entire "Broke Decorating 101" series! 😀 Helpful or no??
@JulieKhuu , that would be absolutely fascinating! I'm sure such a series would feature--& encourage--immense creativity! I think when people tap into & explore their own creativity, it nourishes their soul.

I have collected most of my decor items over a 40 year period. You don't need to buy all new pieces. There are very few pieces in my apartment that I don't love. I am going to replace my ho hum nightstands asap.
Been going around my house donating all the items I’ve collected over the years that don’t carry any sentimental value. Away with the ho hum energy Paula! 🙌🏻💗
Thanks!

After selling my sea container and demolishing the old aviaries, I have barrow loads of road base and good gravel/sand mix to maintain my long driveway for free. The sea container money is going to the bills. Big win-win.
Woot!! 🙌🏻 so resourceful!
The way you speak and behave with us -your community on yt - we can see that you are very comprehensive and you were not born with a " golden spoon in your mouth" ( do we say that in English ? 🤔)
Thank you Julie. Nice to know you and your background better 🙏🙏.
Thank you so much Veronique 🙏🏻🥹💗 In American they use “silver” spoon but I much rather prefer gold! 😂
@@JulieKhuu yes of course..😂 in french too, we say " silver spoon" 😳 I don't know why I said " gold"...maybe because it suits you better, yes 😇😅!!!
I know I can up my game by stopping being inhibited about hanging things on my walls! I start vascilating between types of hangers. I want to use something like command strips, but keep thinking of things falling off and glass breaking! These outsized concerns paralyze me, leaving the walls blank at the top, and potential wall decorations propped at the bottom of the walls! Sigh
There are new hanging ware that barely make a dent or a hole on the wall, especially for heavy items. Try things like 3M The Claw, it leaves tiny holes on the wall, for example.
I have a great video called- How to hang pictures like a pro. All my best DIY tips for hanging pretty much anything on your walls Jeanne-Marie! I never use command strips/ mounting tape for artwork- unless the art is canvas/ frameless/ less than 1lb. I don’t trust the support. 3M’s claw is great, I second that! 👍
The great thing about ebay AND Craigslist is that the gen Z's are NOT there!
Haha touché 😂

Speak more calmly, and slow down a bit. Too much chattering is not peaceful. I understand the way and speed in which you speak is definitely cultural. I slow the video down to 75x.

You have know idea how much this video means to me. I grew up on OC in the 1980s. I remember watching your community growing up and the education focus that Vietnamese community took.
God bless you and your family. Your family has a lot to be proud of!!!!!
That’s awesome Linda! 🙌🏻 You know firsthand- it’s a movement when Vietnamese supermarkets pop up in every corner of Westminster 😂 I’ve been in OC since ‘85! Home to the largest Viet population outside of Vietnam. My parents knew exactly what they were doing when they moved us here from TX. I’m grateful for their dedication and foresight 🙏🏻❤️
I’ve been inspired by your content for years now and today you broke a new wall by sharing about your past. You are so precious! Completely off topic but did you start a new exercise routine in the last couple of years? You’re looking fitter now than before. You look fabulous. Love everything from your hair style, hair colour, dressing, and of course decorating style! Stay lovely and blessed! 💖
Thank you so much for following all these years Norra, that makes me so proud of what I’ve created for you 🫶🏻🥹 I started my TH-cam journey in Jan 2019 and got pregnant shortly after. This community has only seen me pregnant> nursing > preparing to get pregnant again 😆 This is actually my pre-pregnancy weight and I’m happy to have her back, but was in no rush at all. But I’m done having babies, mama’s back!! 💃🏻💥
Gosh. I got rid of the old blinds!
WHAT A DIFFERENCE!
I use wax paper from the Dollar Store for privacy along the bottom of the windows where needed.
Bonus tip: I went along the outside and cleaned up the cobwebs and leaves. Another instant upgrade. Once you start with these little things, you find you can’t stop. Eventually, you’ll step back and surprise yourself! 😁🥰
That’s ingenious! I used to use frosted glass spray to create privacy windows. Lots of taping so you don’t overspray. Your method sounds way cleaner 😅
yes, I would spend it on a new sofa :)
Then you know exactly what you need which is the first step! 🙌🏻

You’re talking where most of us live. Especially if you’re either starting a career or retired.
Understanding WHY you decorate is more important than the things you decorate with 🫶🏻
Hi Julie!
You were so cute as a child. What a life journey you have been on!!! I know what it’s like not wanting to donate children’s clothes. But you have pictures of them in those adorable outfits! Do save a few in tact. I like to recreate old furniture on my own. I use chalk paint latex and stains and sometimes just clear coating after a good sanding. I learn a lot from yt. But I’m also a gardener and that takes a lot of effort too! I just like being creative either in my home or in my garden. It’s why I have followed you since the pandemic. Kept me busy you did! ❤🥰👏🏻👏🏻
We’re the same you and I! Love to get our hands dirty and see the beauty of our home in the fruits of our labor Margaret! I’m sure you walk around so proud of everything you’ve created! 🙌🏻❤️
Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this matter. I’m so glad to hear that someone is talking about this. I wish I could share my space with you. It would mean so much to me. Thanks Julie .
Thank you for stopping by! I’ll open up another opportunity to send in viewer submissions for my advice- look out for the drop in my community page! 🤗
Where to shop: Nature. Things like branches, pine cones, rocks, sea shells, driftwood, etc. can all be free. Of course don't take them from places you shouldn't, but always be looking around for interesting things laying on the ground. Also, the side of the road on trash day. People throw away amazing things. I got an entire set of lawn furniture once when I was just starting out because my neighbor decided to redecorate her patio. It was all in great shape. She just didn't want the bother of selling it so put it to the curb!
Love your story and your delivery as always ❤
Thank you so much! 🙏🏻☺️
Loved hearing the story of your family. Inspiring. Great vid!
Love all your videos but this one is especially good and your direct, honest approach is so appreciated.
My dob 9/4/1998 (female) what my kua no.
I learned something really important: the furniture in my flat was located „right“ but I didn‘t see what I liked to see… never liked my living room and felt really unhappy in my new flat. You said: concentrate on your focal point.
Now my sofas are located totally wrong, but when I sit on them, I can finally see the very old, big tree in front of the huge windows, I love to see so much, I can finally see the sky, instead of the ugly other house vis-á-vis.
My furniture is positioned against all rules now, the sofa stands in the middle of the room now, but I can see what I like to see now, watch my loved cats for example, who I couldn’t see before without turning around, and feel finally happy and at home now.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH 🙌🏻💐
That’s awesome! I’m so glad my tips resonated with you to the point of making change 🙌🏻 That’s the power of interior design right there ⚡️
I love your videos but I have to mention that your mosquito guy said the spray kills all insects. It kills pollinators too. Get rid of the standing water. I live South Carolina and I know the pain but we have to protect bees and butterflies!
Thank you for watching and sharing Maryann 🙏🏻 Who did you use? Did I mention him in a previous video? 🤔
Perfect help! Thank you Juli! I got in the deal subscription of crafts!
Awesome! The quality of instructors on Craftsy is top notch! Super detailed, lots of great expert crafting tips 🙌🏻
I’m definitely going to look for luxury consignment home decor. Great tip!
Yes! I do this every time I travel 🙌🏻
You look like spitting image of this person that dances with a guy on Tik Tok ?
Maybe 20 years ago! 😂 def not me now
Great video!
Thanks for the visit Marion! 🙏🏻💗
Who knew? Target donating to Goodwill!
Yes!! I shop at Goodwill so often, I’ve got the scoop 🙌🏻😉
What do you think about decorating for the season/holiday?? Do you decorate around your everyday decor?? Or have decor all over? (If that makes sense)
I only swap out minor decor and use the rest along with seasonal items. Pillows, throws, some curtains- these get rotated twice a year. I one really decorate for Xmas, but most of my decor stays put 😅
@@JulieKhuu that’s really helpful. Thanks
I like your Video, but you speak way tooooo fast.
You may reduce the speed to your liking Maria ☺️
