I'm a black goth and metalhead. I've been into metal for a decade. I never had any problems. I never been to a concert. I prefer listening from home than going to concerts. 🤘 Metal is my life. There are many bands with black people, Sevendust, Oceano, Killswitch Engage had Howard Jones, Unlocking The Truth, Black Pantera and many more... I listen to metal whether they are a white band, or a black band. It doesn't matter 🤘

It’s one thing to listen to it from the comfort and safety of your home.

@thelastdaybreathinginetern1385 first of all, you're a very talented musician and I hope people check it out. Second, you need to check out the live experience. There is nothing like the adrenaline of throwing down in the mosh pit. If you ever want to check out a show in Illinois or Wisconsin, let me know and if I'm not booked that night, we'll link up.

I was so psyched to see Primitive Man but the tour got canceled, after this I'm supporting them soo much more than I used to. Been a long time fan of Jason Butler's projects (since Fake History) and I will continue to support his message for years to come. I need to get her book and continue to read her body of work!

This has been my fight since I can remember. Whenever I'd tell people I'm a singer, the first question they'd ask is "what style-Jazz, R&B"? With a slight spirk on my face my response was/is " I have no limitations on which genre I wish to deliver lyrics, I actually embrace Rock & Metal". I love seeing the reaction as I bell out a song they wouldn't think I've been listening to for years! Typically it's "Closer" By NIN = Nine Inch Nails! just for the thrill of helping to expand their musical perspective and the stereotypical BS that comes with a sista who's into metal in all forms without them thinking I have an identity crisis or have some dyer need in wanting to be white. Which has nothing to do with my personal preferences.

Laina's comment at 52:10 about publications being hesitant to discuss real issues is correct and it frustrates me. I do not understand the allure of reading the same dull hype stories and the recycled interview questions from metal media? Why wouldn't writers look to engage the artists and the community in real world issues?
Yeah, music is escapist to a degree, but metal less than most and most metal is overtly a reaction to experiences/perceptions of oppression or conflict. It's an inherently political art form in many many cases (maybe not power metal, I'll give ya that).
Anyone wanting to bury their head and ignore the real world by listening to metal is barking up the wrong tree i reckon.

"I do not understand the allure of reading the same dull hype stories and the recycled interview questions from metal media? " - go on any major metal group on fb and see where you get if you mention anything real or even post any obviously left wing band, you'll get ridiculed. people aren't morons, so they won't go against the grain because they don't wanna lose their audience. there's so much push back against discussion of anything serious because of corporate media's limp dicked attempts at appealing to advertisers, which is conflated with actual left wing ideas. people think political correctness came from marx ffs.

Laina, Ethan and Jason, thank you so much for your honesty, intellect and dignity in this conversation. I'm a white man and more white men need to be hearing your words and putting in the work to change the metal scene so that yourselves and those effected by racism, sexism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia and all other -isms and -phobias can express themselves safely in this culture. I’ve been into metal, punk rock, hardcore music since the late 90s. I’ve never encountered any racism at shows and I use to go to A LOT. I even dated society 1 lead singer for a few years, At the same time I’m from southern Cali Los Angeles, which is nothing compared to a rural area I’m sure. When I first started going to shows for a few years I was the ONLY black person and I’d see skinheads there but none ever messed with me. Back then there was a band called ZAO and at the time they had a black bass player and I thought it was so awesome. I would wear my BAD BRAINS shirt with pride, and thought it was so badass that DK’s drummer was black. Absolutely loved when James Spooner came out with his doc Afropunk. To be honest I got the most shit from my own race back in the late 90s early 2000’s for having my musical tastes but i now know it was b/c they couldn’t understand how i could be into that music. Back then to me it was like everyone had to stay in your music lanes. I’m happy that in this day in age it seems like it doesn’t matter what you look like you can like what you like without getting shit for it. a few years I started to see black people like 1-3 people and if there were any girls I was drawn to them like a magnet and we would be talking all night like instant best friends ☺️

Heavy metal is white music and now black people try to make heavy metal looks like black music.
Racism is part of creativity in heavy metal.
Gene simmons is a jewish but attended at lemmy's funeral even though he knows lemmy collected iron cross that looks like nazy symbol.
Dimebag had confederate guitar but pantera still have black fans.
