Arnold had justified claims to be offended by all the slights against him! However so did Washington as well! One persevered, went on to become America’s first president, and is immortally revered and the other has gone down as an infamous traitor, hated even by the side he switched to! Perseverance in the face of injustices matters!
I will tell you this: I am an American Patriot through and through. I am a Veteran, and I love my country. BUT... If my country treated me the way these guys treated Benedict Arnold, I am certain my mind could be changed. Now, I would never have gone over to the other side because there is nothing my country could have done to me that would make us worse than the Bolsheviks. But I would da__ed sure stop pouring my heart and soul into doing for a bunch of bastards that kept sh__ting all over me. I understand Arnold. He took it too far, and that I cannot respect. But I understand him right up to the point of resigning his commission and letting those politicians in Philadelphia fight the British without him. You see, we were fighting for the common man and claiming to be building a meritocracy. All the while, the people making the bigger decisions were forming an aristocracy all of their own, and Benedict Arnold, their very best General, wasn't in the club. Men like Horatio Gates were in the club, and that is enough to disgust any red blooded American. I get it. While he took it further than I would have ever taken it, I get why he did it. What I love about my country has to do with the fact that men such as those don't always win and we have Constitutionally protected rights to make sure they don't always win. But in Benedict Arnold's eyes: There was no Constitution protecting the common man, the country was 5 minutes old and the new aristocracy were winning right out of the gate. He did not have a crystal ball.
Very true how Congress treated him. Arguably the best field commander in the Continental Army. But he could not deal with it and let it basically drive him insane. For him to do what he did (though we know his Tory Wife was working on him all the time) is simply unforgivable. He should have had faith in Washington; that he would not be forgotten and pushed aside when it mattered.
The combination of the French and Indian against the British was the cause of their defeat. Remember the vast distance between the British communications and by the way King George was not mad as portrait, anyhow we defeated you in the 1812 war.
@@frederickanderson1860 Now, you can make up your own history if you please, but good luck publishing the book. Your arrogance was the reason you had your asses kicked, and you damned sure had it kicked TWICE. Did you really just try and claim victory for 1812? Please explain how you won the war of 1812...and then just gave us our country back. Gee, how very nice of you. What a ridiculous statement. Back to the revolution, and your arrogance, you would have won that war of Howe had marched his ass up the Hudson on to join Burgoyne as they had planned, rather than going into Philadelphia to settle in for the winter, in the belief that he was so superior that there was no need for any sense of urgency. Had How come out of Philly to fight Washington in New Jersey, while he was camped there out of powder, you'd have won. Had Clinton sent reinforcements to Yorktown before the French Fleet showed up to help us out, you'd have won. The Indians were on your side, and the French were only involved and used sparingly in one battle. Had they not been involved in that one battle, it would have made no difference. Your reinforcements would have made it to Yorktown and possibly broken that siege, but that would not have ended the war in your favor. We'd have just fought on for as long as it took, as we had been doing for 5 years, fighting you on OUR terms (as we had learned how to deal with you by then) and you would have surrendered at a later date. But you were GOING to surrender, as your inability to end it quickly with the largest army on earth had your Parliament at it's wits end with the debt you were racking up for your continued failure. "The French did it. The Indians did it. The man on he moon did it..." Tell you what, if your butt whippings in 1776 and 1812 were not enough to convince you of your inherent inferiority, why don't we settle things with a rematch? Next, let's talk about what you did to my ancestors in Ireland, and how THAT played out for you. There is certainly a pattern here.
@@frederickanderson1860 Everyone else, please pay attention to what you see here. They came over here in 1812, and invaded a continent with overwhelming numbers. They went home with no continent to show for it, with their hats in their hands. 250 years later, the British public schools are teaching them that they won that war. Never underestimate British unwarranted arrogance.
@@kennedymcgovern5413 sure like the myth of king George madness. Your constitution is from the English magna Carta, the influences of the English laws and concepts are not accepted by the myth of the declaration of independence. 18:48 the messenger boy is top notch acting. He should get his own series, shame I haven't heard anything more about his career since this aired.
Fantastic history. I can dig it.

Arnold betrayed America because he was offended? What a snowflake.
