Great video, BC. I don’t know how you are able to find these old cases and throughly research them, but thank you so much for your hard work. I look forward to each Monday for a little step back in time. 🫶
I tell people all the time in the true crime community who keep thinking we are getting worse as a society to come here. This stuff has happened since time began.
It's a great shame that there weren't mechanisms to help servants _before_ they were killed. This is the second case you've told about a sadistic mother and daughter combo beating a young servant to death. And I have to wonder how many servants were sent to their deaths without anyone doing anything about it.
That happened a lot during the antebellum period in US history. I mean, it wasn't even possible for an enslaved person to bring any kind of legal to authorities.
@@StacyL. Hundreds, maybe thousands over a time period, but millions are unlikely. That would require most people with servants to be killers which certainly wasn't true.
Hello BC, another great case. Poor little thing, they obviously thought no-one would bother about a little poor girl. But Elizabeth and Betty got their just desserts. I would think it was very unusual for a woman of some wealth to be found guilty, but sense prevailed. Poor little Jane, a nobody in her lifetime, but thanks to you she has not been forgotten. RIP Jane.❤
I was so worried that the other servant girl would end up taking the blame for this! How brave of her to speak up in court. That must have been terrifying. Such a sad tale. Thank you Briefcase for telling it so well and with such respect. Can't wait for tomorrow's upload! ❤
Times were so different back then. I know that's a dumb thing to say, but wow. I can't get enough of these 'ancient' stories. Well done Mr. Brief Case.
It's always good when the murderers meet their end. It drives me crazy when they say that they died in their 70s. Thank you for another wonderful story.
Liked, the crowd was not interested in sermons, only that mother & daughter were dispatched. Horrific how the wealthy treated their servants with contempt worse than the workhouses !! What could a child maid of only 13 do to deserve such a fate? 💔
It still is in a way. The wealthy often seem to be able to get away with things whereas ordinary folk wouldn't be able to escape justice for the same offences. It's true even today.
You have no idea how much I look forward to your videos. You are the only channel I know of that takes us back to centuries past and you are most excellent at transporting me there.
Yay, Monday! A new story! This is my favorite podcast, by far. You do them oh so well! Elizabeth and Betty were nightmares. The plight of the working class was difficult at best. But with mistresses like this, it was downright unbearable. Poor Jane.
Brief Case, thank you for another one of your fascinating videos. This one taking place in the 18th century. I love that you usually have cases that I haven't heard of.
My heart breaks, she was just a girl trying to make a living. If being a servant/apprentice was already hard, i cannot imagine being so young and abused by these women. Thanks BC for the upload and I hope you have a great week.
This is a rare treat, a case from nearly 300 years ago. Very satisfying that both women were held to account in the end, though it was too late for the multitude of poor servants they had mistreated and especially Jane. The Branches had position, wealth, property, servants. You'd think their cushy berth would have made them mellow and benevolent. Thank you Brief Case for the story and your gem of a text and narration.
I like your remark that they should have been benevolent, I agree. Instead, and even to this day, people like them think they are so far above everyone else that they can behave in what ever depraved way they want.
Not all rich people were so horrible.Julius Rosenwald head of Sears Roebuck built the Rosenwald Schools for minorities, Andrew Carnegie built libraries across America.St.Katherine Drexel of the Philadelphia banking family founded the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament for blacks and native Americans.St.Louis Strattman a Hungarian doctor and nobleman, established in part of his family mansion, a hospital for the poor,.He,s known in Hungary as the Doctor of the Poor.St.Vincent de Paul and St.Louise de Marillac a noblewoman founded the Daughters of Charity. There are other examples of wealthy Catholics and Protestants who have helped the less fortunate.
My great Aunt was in servitude in the 1900's, it was what you did to counteract the shame you brought on yourself and your family (unmarried mothers for example). Not great for anyone but for most this saved them and their offspring.
Wow! This is the first time you've done a case that I was familiar with. Unbelievable these women got their entertainment from beating the staff. Thanks for all you do BC
Good morning! A cup of tea and a Brief Case video are a perfect way to start Monday mornings. What a horrible pair those two were. Mother taught daughter how to be cruel. It's pretty sad really. At least they were brought to justice. It does make me wonder if she killed her husband and that other servant girl.
Thank you so much for sharing your videos with us! Never assume that just because someone is rich or has a good reputation is truth! The outward appearance doesn’t tell you what evil lurks in the persons heart or mind. I’m glad justice was obtained for Jane’s brutal and senseless death. Thank you BC for always giving us the best stories ever!! Blessings always to you! ❤️😊🙏
You take me to places ive never been: i revisit places I have been blessed to visit and show me remarkable works of art. If there is such an award on the level of an Oscar for TH-cam excellence, you should so be presented. Thank you. I am reminded, also, that the evils of mankind's natures is certainly universal and constant. It seeps through the tiny spaces of available openings and finds a home. So stay away from open windows. ❤❤
Its Monday evening and can relax and watch BC. An excellent story thankyou love these old times stories. You bring these tales to life cant wait for next week x
Yet another great account, so very well done and the illustrations really bring the times home to us viewers, thanks for this and RIP to their victims.

I have complimented you several times before... But, again, I must say that your manner and choice of descriptive words in these video stories are absolutely superb!!! There is a gentleman who has a channel that plays videos about unusual fatalities. I find it very hard to listen to his videos as he goes so overboard with his choice of descriptive words. Plus he uses these overblown descriptive words in EVERY SENTENCE!!! (It's too much.. and I feel that it detracts from the story). But you stories and descriptive narration is PERFECT!!! Just a beautiful job putting the narration together for each video. I honestly could listen to your voice and descriptive narration all day...if I had the time!!! The way you describe things, your perfect diction and your voice are all perfect for these videos!!! All I have to do is start one of your videos and listen. In no time I am transported back in my mind to each time period and feel like I am right there at the time and place that these things happened! I absolutely love your videos!!! Thank you for making these stories so intriguing!!! As I've said before, please don't change a thing! They are perfect!!!

Another win on this one!! ❤👏👊😌 Have a fabulous week Mr. Brief Case..! Much love from Regina Saskatchewan Canada ✌️
Thanks for making my Monday more fun! Great video! Can you please do videos on older cases from 1600-1800s India, Japan, Scotland, Italy and South Korea? If they have English sources?
This was a very good video of yours thank you for making them. I find real value in your calm and measured tone. If you could consider bringing back title cards for “Trial” and “crime” and the like I would appreciate it.
Servants do have rights, this trial saved others from the severe abuse meted out by this inhumane employer. Terrible even to think ! Brief but substantial as always!
Excellent work Briefcase! I really enjoyed that one. I've worked for some terrible managers before but I can't say any of them were as bad as the Branch family! Well done on researching the case. It must be quite an effort to compile all the information together.

Don’t just isolate the US with these crimes- the US had slavery the shortest amount of time than anywhere.

@@StacyL. Hundreds, maybe thousands over a time period, but millions are unlikely. That would require most people with servants to be killers which certainly wasn't true.
How refreshing that reguardless of this lady and her daughter’s status they were held accountable..
Exactly! Thought they were above the law. Pair of psychos.
Refreshing INDEED!
regardless
Oh yes thought that myself but clever improvisation don’t you think?!

I can't even fathom treating servants in a way that seems so commonplace back then.
Mondays suck. They suck a little bit less with fresh Victorian true crime.
Hang in there. Before you know you will be retiring and Mondays will be yours.
The "VICTORIAN ERA " was between the years 1837 to 1901and this story takes place almost a century before.
Georgian crime
200 years to early….. I think 🤔

OOO! Excited. Can't beat a bit of Brief Case to settle my bloody nerves.

I'd of thought the prosecution would have called previous servants to attest to her cruelty rather than hope a jury believed a young girl's testimony.
Maybe they thought they had enough evidence already. Just a guess.
