    I’m amazed there’s that much water bubbling and steaming out of that culm. Wonder how long ago it was cut.

      The culm is the stalk of bamboo. Rods are what you are making after numerous steps. Flaming dries, cures, and tempers it for strength. Moisture will cause contraction and weakening over time. The bamboo when curing releases an oil that acts as a natural varnish to protect it from water exposure. Some rodmakers add a substance for extra protection to supplement longevity. As always, every step of building, the level of skill effects how much supplement you need to add.
