    Nice shout out for Annbriar. There are some solid courses in the St Louis metro east. Spencer T Olin is also solid. Gateway National is great with a view of St Louis skyline & Arch. Indian Springs near Vandalia is also a hidden gem!

    Good list, the 2 Chicago courses I recommend is Harborside and Ravisloe, best of links & golden age design. I would add Bonnie Brook as a great value, plus Balmoral Woods, Whisper Creek, village links of Glen Ellyn and Heritage Bluffs.

    Oak Grove, Stonewall Orchard,
    You are right about one thing....as you can see with everyone adding a lot more courses Chicago has one of the best golf markets in the country..... The ssd thing about Chicago golf is no home PGA tournament , :( I would love to see the PGA play Butler GC

    Agree with your list. So many great courses in Chicagoland. Highlands of Elgin & Blackstone are my favorite out of those you listed…Looking forward to knocking out Preserve at Oak Meadow and DG this year. Hidden Gems I would add are Village Links of Glen Ellyn and Arrowhead in Wheaton. Pottawatomie in St Charles is a fun RTJ course right on the Fox river

    Damn where was this list when I was living in Illinois. You missed Thunderhawk, Chalet Hills, Steeple Chase.

  • @Soundofthetimes
    @Soundofthetimes ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Just played George Dunn this weekend. It is a tough course, with a crap load of sandtraps. It is one of the most challenging public courses I've played. Big Run in Lockport is tougher but only because the rough is so long that you can't find your ball even when its only 2 feet off the fairway. Downers is on my list to play soon as is Ravines.

    • @jaytravtulsa1
      @jaytravtulsa1 8 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Forget George Dunne. All of those sand traps are in total disrepair. Can’t even rake and roll to get a lie; my group just agreed to take the balls out and lob on from the rough. With real traps, yes, the course is totally legit with great shot values, but that’s not the case this season.

  • @mitchstanton4841
    @mitchstanton4841 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I like the list and also like the suggestions in the Comments section. Living in the far Northern Suburbs I can confirm Stonewall Orchard and Steeple Chase and Thunderhawk. The back 9 at Thunderhawk has 3 Par 3's, 3 Par Fours and 3 Par 5's. I'll just add Veterans Memorial or F/K/A Willow Glen GC part of Great Lakes Navy Base. Affordable, electric carts, practice range, nice club house and open to the public. It'll test you and all the clubs in your bag. Completely under rated.

      @Karstenhultgren  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I love Stonewall and ThunderHawk, though I feel like the secret is out on them so I didn’t categorize as a hidden gem

    One of the absolute best in the Northwest is Deer Valley Golf Club in Deer Grove. Small town country club. Less than $40. Beautiful course on a huge amount of land. A couple super cool elevated tee boxes. Hole 13 is one of the best par 3s I’ve ever seen

  • @michaelforrest4783
    @michaelforrest4783 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Not bad at all. Stonewall Orchard, Village Links of Glen Ellen, Foxford Hills, are all solid and stand up to those ya mentioned. Great call on MP btw. But, mentioning Shepherds Crook, and not playing Thunderhawk first is a miss. A solid RtJ jr. track that's public, and will test every player.

    • @Dustbrother1099
      @Dustbrother1099 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great point. Thunderhawk is about double the green fees compared to Shepherds Crook and it’s a solid choice. I don’t know if either are hidden gems as I was there a few weeks ago on a Friday and both were packed.

    The Highlands of Elgin, full stop, would be my favorite public course in Illinois if Cog Hill #4 wasn't a public course. The layout, conditions, and price to play of the course is unmatched.
    I want to really like The Preserve at Oak Meadows but it's simply way too short. They NEVER have the Tournament Tees out when I play there which means you have a Par 72 course at 6300 yards which is just way too short for a longer hitter, better player golfer. It relies too much on gimicy-styled short Par 4s that dogleg.
    You mentioned Shepherd's Crook at the end of your video; it's a FANTASTIC course with a lot of character. I'd say it's pretty close to the quality-to-price value of The Highlands of Elgin. It is though, for a lot of people, too far of a drive if you live in Downtown Chicago seeing how it's literally on the northern border. If you live near O'hare though, it's pretty much an equal drive to Shepherd's Crook and The Highlands of Elgin at about 40 minutes each way on the toll roads.
