I ABSOLUTELY love this. As a guy who grew up using electricity as my "friendly" enemy it's great to see you doing this old school. THANK YOU! The early usage of the treadmill, without the horse. Like I said, I love this.
another fantastic video Zed!I love these long, detailed videos. A proper masterclass and an opportunity to watch a skilled crafts woman at work! Thank you again for your time and dedication, you are awesome my friend!
I’m so glad you enjoyed this! Really thrilled for the feedback. Masterclass really is a good word. I’ve been telling some folks that it’s much of what you’ll hear me say in a 1 to 2 day course… just missing the hands on help and practice!
I really enjoyed your enthusiasm, and watching the skill is just perfect. I did my first turning on an electric lathe, but I really want to build a pole lathe
Really high praise. I’m so glad it has come across this way and helps:) It’s a tricky thing to communicate and I work hard on figuring out how to do that! Would love to see what you make!
This was wonderful, very well explained in technique and differences between them. She is a treasure and an amazing artist. Thank you for bringing this to us.
Hey everyone it’s me Raleigh in the video. I found a few mistakes in the video that I said… 1st - the drill bit needs to be slightly SMALLER than the tenon on the mandrel!! Sorry about that everyone. 1:02:43 2nd - I forgot to mention that the cord needs to be between you and the mandrel as you wrap it around, otherwise it will be rotating the wrong way!! I do mention this later in the video tho! 1:23:53 If I find other mistakes in what I said I’ll edit the comment here😅
Thank you very much. This has to be the most meticulous video on that topic i know. Nice bowl. And the intricacies of working on the pole lathe were explained very well. Really good stuff.
Hello, We are slowly working on them. We have applied for some funding and will be notified in a few weeks if we get it which would allow us to dedicate the time this year to plans. We are aiming to release them by the end of 2024. If you are eager please get in touch and I will be happy to chat about the basics of them!@@missbackwoods
So happy to find this video. Super encouraging:) I've been turning on a pole lathe for about a year now and have hit a spot of frustration. This video has me back at it with enthusiasm. Such nice little insights! Thanks to you both.
Sniffles. Make me think of the fall that is approaching. Summer is dying and soon, there will be the unpleasant smell of pumpkin spice. BTW........very cool video. Very talented.
Lovely to see your axe technique, last time I saw you axing (a few years back) it was good, but now it really has levelled up. Was delightful to watch.
I'm a huge fan of using Cherry!! It's amazing. After using it I feel like I'm turning into a superhero. Cyclops to be exact, because merely looking at it and it burns. 😁
Hi Zed. Many thanks for sharing this very amazing tutorial, probably one of the best I've seen for a long while. Best wishes and stay safe from West Wales.
Sincerely appreciate the kind words and I hope to film a detailed pole lathe building tutorial later in the year, for now Raleigh will be having her own plans available on her website for you to acquire ~Peace~
Thanks for making the video Zed, and Raleigh, thanks for explaining your workflow and details on your method. This really helps me out fine tuning my method and it’s great to watch. Hope to be able to meet you, maybe at bowl gathering or Von hand next year?
Zed my ex was from usa was confusing different names from us and usa I absolutely love the old fashion lath I never carve with modern electric fancy tools I only use a pocket knife and files I made a scraper from old saw blade for my spoon carving exellent job I absolutely love your content good friend 👍🐾🦊🇮🇹

That's awesome! Loved the video and the turning of the bowl was great. I only used an electrical turning machine one time that someone lended to me, and without a teacher, I got quite scared by the whole thing. So I gave up... But this looks so damn cool ^^
@@WildCraftedHome Thank you, I think for now I'll stick to knife and hand tools, I still have much to learn :p But I don't doubt that it gets addictive haha. Have a good day!
lol, I hope to film some tutorials in the future on turning a bowl on an electric lathe as well :) Many thanks for watching and for the kind words Michael ~Peace~
I hope I kept it interesting enough for no boredom. I’ve found that the longer the video is the more information there is included in his videos! Clearly I had a lot to say 😅
correct me if im wrong but im pretty sure trees twist because of wind not because of following the sun?. thats why bottom part of trunk is always pretty much straight grain wood.
This is an excellent tutorial and shows Raleigh's skill at turning but also Zed's experience in filming crafters at work. One day I hope my videos will be this good: Comments welcome at www.youtube.com/@jbwoodcrafts
Thank you for your kind words John and in regards to quality of videos, it will come with time dude, i'm still learning to this day and have lots to improve upon. Wishing you the best with your TH-cam journey ~Peace~
@@Zedoutdoors Thanks Zed. I'm sure our paths will cross again. We met briefly at the Cambridgeshire Bodger's Ball last year and I'll be teaching at the Ball in the Weald and Downland museum.
I built a lathe similar to this one, but I cannot figure out why mine is not carving and polishing the wood, instead it is chipping and chewing the wood. Thanks
Hey! There are so many factors but the most likely is technique, how secure and how sharp your tools are etc. Watch closely to the angle of my tools in how they apply to the wood and how the angle is maintained while turning. If it’s moving you have to anchor your body frame and grip more. Lots of little bits of muscle memory and tool application experience! Keep going!!! It will get better:)
Each mandrel is different and we switch between them. We also use the drills for many different projects so we find this way to be the more efficient! But if you have a dedicated drill and one mandrel or many that are identical then yes that is a good idea=)

Also, the pear Raleigh mentions as a good wood in CA is almost certainly Bradford pear or Callery pear.
Yes Bradford pear! But I’ve also used a ‘usual’ fruit bearing pear too I was reminded:)
