    This weekend I went to a local orchard and picked 15 pounds of blackberries. Turned it all into blackberry jam and canned 28 jelly jars of it. I exchanged a jar with my neighbor and she let me give her lemon mint a haircut. I put the mint and a whole bunch of oregano from a plant that needed pruning, into my freeze dryer. Less than 12 hours later, I have plenty dried of each for tea or seasoning for pasta dinners. Would love to see how you use your herbs, Rachel.

    My ears really perked up when you mentioned being careful with herbs if you're taking medications like blood thinners. It's really important to remember that - even multi vitamins can have weird effects with certain medications!

    • @smas3256
      @smas3256 ปีที่แล้ว

      So research shows people on blood thinners should not have turmeric. So people would rather have the pill instead of the turmeric. Sounds aSS backward to me. I found this out listening to a women telling me that and claims she is not afraid of anything so she will take the pill. Yikes. What are people missing.

    Herb harvesting is such an enjoyable activity. I wish there was a more affordable and smaller freeze dryer. I would buy one for cilantro harvesting alone. I have not figured out how people in hot climates make cilantro ladden salsa. Because for me in NC, by the time tomatoes are ready, my cilantro is long gone and I always havr to buy cilantro. It just gets too hot for cilantro. But as usual, I'll keep trying to find a way to grow some in the heat of summer.

    Could you be specific about honeysuckle. There is the plant you get from the nursery. Then there is natural honeysuckle that grows in the wild and is considered invasive - both have the same flower and smell. The wild tends to be more like a bush to me. Your violets are huge and don't look like the ones that grew in the lawn where I used to live, those were tiny. Your's look more like pansies.

    What kind of mint? I had emergency surgery for a perforated large bowel in 2019(I was 50) which couldn’t be repaired. We grow peppermint(I just dehydrated 9 shelves of it in my Excalibur) for my gut issues. I use it in tea, hot chocolate, brownies & make an extract. We also grow spearmint(we use it for flavoring and too, but mostly as a natural Vicks. I make a steam tent to open sinuses/lungs) plus chocolate mint, & apple mint.

      Infant botulism is the reason honey containing foods should not be given to children under the age of one, and used sparingly for those slightly older. Previous safe consumption unfortunately doesn't guarantee future safe consumption. It can take up to a month for bacterial colonization in the digestive tract to start showing symptoms. Like most rare illnesses, no one thinks it will happen to their family until it does.

    • @emilykoch4123
      @emilykoch4123 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      That’s correct, because honey is one of the most common sources of botulism. Infants aren’t able to process the spores like adults can, so there’s a much higher risk when feeding honey to an infant (so it’s advised to avoid it completely).

    Rachel, I have always heard that honey is to be forbidden for any child under 1 year of age! Please correct me if mistaken, but I just copied this from google: "Why is honey not safe for babies under age one?
    Avoid giving honey - even a tiny taste - to babies under the age of 1 year. Honey can cause a rare but serious gastrointestinal condition (infant botulism) caused by exposure to Clostridium botulinum spores. Bacteria from the spores can grow and multiply in a baby's intestines, producing a dangerous toxin." Please be sure about no honey for babies.

    I’m sure you know this and I’m not trying to be rude. You shouldn’t give children under 1 year of age honey or anything with honey in it because of the risk of infant botulism.
    The toddler tea sounds great though! Maybe a tad bit of maple syrup instead of honey for the babies under 1.
