When the new version came out my wife asked what I thought of the cover. My response was "Shit version of an awesome song". She replied with "I knew you'd say that" :) Tracy has such a unique talent that simply can't be replicated.
Not a true story for Tracy but for too many people I suspect. She has shown great empathy and integrity throughout her career. She’s a storyteller and imho a truthteller. She never turned a blind eye to the state of things. Great songs by her to check out would be, Talkin’ about a revolution, Moutains of things, For my Lover or Telling stories among others. She has many great songs. Great reaction to this song and seeing her perform this at such a Young age alone on that stage always throws me. Spellbinding for sure.
Who didn't love and buy Tracy Chapman's self-titled album in 1988?. It was such a phenomenon that it was nominated for 6 Grammy's that year. She won 3 of the 6 Grammy's, including "Best New Artist."
She does have other pieces. Such, Talkin' bout a Revolution, Give Me One Reason, etc. Tracy Chapman sings from her spirit & that is one her incredible gifts. She is a true one ... a good one. Thank you!
Just after this song was released I happened to be walking through the room as my wife was watching one of the morning news shows and Tracy was performing this song. I stopped to listen and thought it was one of the most genius compositions I ever heard.
Only when you play her first CD all the way through will you understand her background and music motives. It tells a wonderful but sad life story. ACROSS THE LINE is so emotional.
@@MelodyMan69 Can’t promise I’m gonna react to the whole album but there will definitely be more Tracy on the channel coming again! Appreciate the sub and have a great one!
I agree 💯%. At this year's Grammy's, when Luke was singing "his version" Tracy came out unannounced and as a total surprise to sing with him Fast Car. The crowd went wild at Tracy's surprised appearance. She was definitely the highlight of that Grammy's.
Great song! It was the first song I heard from Tracy Chapman & bought the album. All the songs on it are great. She is a very good singer-songwriter & storyteller. I have always loved her unusual voice. Other hit singles are Talkin' 'bout A Revolution", "Baby Can I Hold You", "Crossroads", "Give Me One Reason" etc.
Well, now you've found one that I had never heard before! I never heard "the other one," either. I had no idea there WAS a song "out there" with that name! That may be because I had a tendency to turn OFF new music being introduced in the late 1980s. I heard SOME, because of my kids, but this wasn't one of them. WOW! I agree about the authenticity in her voice. Going back in after your comment about that, with the story going further, I'm thinking maybe it was the TIMES she had written about, more than a personal history. I know SO many people that went through those kinds of things back in the 80s. There was so much confusion going on, everywhere. This is something I've found in a lot of the songs that Dan Vasc has covered, also -- especially regarding the Iron Maiden and the Helloween songs. I know I knew about the things that were happening, and spent a lot of time in prayer about a lot of them, yet (back then) I shied away from the metal songs because of the harmonics that I couldn't handle, mostly, and never even really knew all the lyrics, or what stories they were trying to tell. Then, when I started listening to Dan's music, and going to look closely at the lyrics to see whether or not I had them straight in my brain, I was pretty much flabbergasted! Now that I KNOW what so many of those songs were about, I can see WHY a lot of us parents were being lied to about how AWFUL the songs were, and that we shouldn't let our kids listen to that junk...for shame on us! Stupid devil! OK...I just went and searched for info about the song, and here's a really good summary, I think. You'll have to search for: Fast Car by Tracy Chapman: everything about “Fast Car” If you can't find that (and you should be able to), let me know, and I'll send you the actual link, on Patreon. Tracy also has a YT channel. Anyway...YES! It was actually written about the TIMES she was living through (as were we all), back then! Great song, and great reaction, Steven! THANK YOU!
Awesome! Thanks for sharing and getting to the bottom of it! I can always count on you Linda to do great research. She has such a unique voice and this is such an incredible tune! Have a great day! 😁
Thank you for the research. I agree about the music of the late 80s, I turned back to what I was raised on Country, and older Rock and Roll, so missed a great deal of the music then.
Listen to those last to verses again. She leaves her drunk dad to go with her boyfriend. Has a kid and the boyfriend ends up like her dad. So she's telling herself once again that she has to make a decision, but now it's to leave her husband. She's incredible. Last Grammy's, she and Luke did a duet of this that was very good.
Welcome to an incredibly unique talent that many people missed. A few rather noteworthy artists did recognize her - Eric Clapton does a duet with her, "Give Me One Reason" (her song) - and Luciano Pavarotti duet with her, "Baby Can I Hold You Tonight" (also her song). Watch the awards show where she and Luke Combs sing it together and she finally gets the recognition she deserves for having written this song. She entered the musical world in a time when it was not easy for a gay black artist to get recognition for her Talent. 😞 🌈❤️
I am so glad that Tracy Chapman performed at the 2024 Grammys with Luke Combs for this exact reason: Everyone NEEDS to know that he was fanboying and Tracy Chapman is the owner, singer and ALLOWED Combs to cover her song.
Thank you for recognizing her talent. Another that is unappreciated. She is Raw and Wholesome and says it like it is. A rare jewel who never received the recognition she deserved. Sad that her song is popular now in country cover but giving her a bit more recognition so maybe not so bad. Again, thank you for discovering the original. Another that is under rated is Pink. If you want a journey, check her out.
She is incredibly talented indeed! I’ve heard some Pink stuff but only what has been her big hits on the radio. I do need to check out some of her deeper cuts! Have a great one!
I absolutely love her. Luke did good and respected her in his version. But, NO ONE does it like Tracy! I’d like you to react to a new band that is also great at storytelling. The lead singer is an amazing song writer. This song is very personal. The Nicotine Dolls - 30 Somehow

What an amazing tune and I love her voice! Can't wait to hear more from her!
Tracy & Luke performed this song on the 2024 Grammys. You really must check it out. You'll instantly see the level of respect Luke has for her.
Omg! Love Tracy!! Listen to Give Me One Reason! Awesome!!
I few others have suggested that too! Definitely have to check that out! Thanks so much and have a blessed day!

This is such a great song and her style and authenticity cannot be replicated like you said! Love it! 🔥

I agree. She’s so genuine that it hurts.
💯
Talking About A Revolution is awesome.
Sweet! Appreciate the suggestion!
She is amazing, one of a kind. If this song doesn't move you, nothing will. Thanks for the great reaction. ✌❤
Absolutely! It was a blessing getting to listen to this performance! Thank you for watching! ❤️
Shes such a humble beautiful soul. ❤
It appears that way! Her talent is unreal and this song is absolutely amazing!

It is a true story.
If you want a heart wrenching song from her check out The Promise. My favorite song of hers. Beautiful. 😘

Appreciate the info and the suggestions! She has an incredible voice and I can’t wait to hear more from her!
There’s a great video of Tracy and Eric Clapton doing Give Me One Reason to Stay Here
Wow! Two powerhouses! I bet that’s awesome. Thanks for sharing!
You’ll enjoy the studio version. It still wrecks my heart every time I hear it
Awesome! Thanks for the info!
She sings Sorry as if she were the song!!
One of the best songs ever written. One of the best songs ever sang. She has the voice of an angel.
💯 Absolutely phenomenal! Thanks for hanging out!

She really knows how to use her beautiful voice. Sometimes soft and clear, sometimes trembling, sometimes powerful. Excellent art.
Absolutely!
It absolutely is her song 🎵 ❤
And she absolutely killed it! Phenomenal performance and such a beautiful tune!
She has a great catalogue as well. Some fabulous albums....
Can’t wait to hear them! Thanks!
Made famous when she played at the Nelson Mandela 70th birthday tribute concert at Wembley Stadium, England in 1988....
Oh wow! I bet that’s EPIC!
Great song, great artist, great reaction!
So glad you enjoyed it! And I agree, she is absolutely incredible!
I've been telling folks that Luke getting a grammy for a bar cover is ridiculous. Comes nowhere near the magic of the original.
Yeah this blew me away!!! She has such a beautiful and unique voice! Can’t wait to hear more from her! Thanks for watching!

Tracy and Luke performed this as a duet on this year’s Grammys that is definitely worth checking out, it’s beautiful ❤️
Oh wow! I definitely need to watch that! Thanks so much 😁
I like you and I like your reactions. You are doing a good job boy. ☺️
Really appreciate it and thanks for hanging out! 😁

Luke Combs’ father used to play her version and Luke loved it which was why he covered it.
Oh that’s awesome! It is such a great tune! 😀

Great song and reaction
Such a beautiful song! Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for hanging out!
I'm sure you already have but if you haven't do yourself a favor and listen to her sing Give Me One Reason live
It is a true story her mother raised her and her dad was a heavy drinker. She quits school to take care of him.
Oh wow! 🤯
She is the first female person of colour to win a CMA award for her song. That ain't nothing.
Awesome!
My personal favorite is Mountains O’ Things. She’s definitely in my top 5 artists!

The Nicotine Dolls - 30 Somehow
The acoustic version of 30 something has him performing
it's always just her and her guitar
So good! Such a killer voice!
I think I heard somewhere that this song based on her life.
Oh wow! That makes it even more special! Thanks for sharing!
