I think the big benefit that Edey will have being in Memphis is that they have a ton of very athletic guards and forwards that can help mitigate the fact that even though Edey moves well for a 7ft 4 guy, he's still 7ft 4... but a lot like Steven Adams (but with more pure shot blocking ability and overall scoring touch), Edey just takes up a lot of space which helps take pressure off JJJ and helps protect their guards on the back end, so I think while a lot of people overanalyzed Edey's ability to play in the NBA, he's also going into a situation that fits what he does best as well
Yes BUT i think there is more to Edey than a big body that moves well. 1. Clearly has IQ 2. Progression the last 2 years is sky rocketing him to SUPERSTAR potential (I'm getting Shaq vibe, say what you want but the league is staying smaller than it could focusing on player with good shooting primarily). 3. He is very physical many teams are not ready for this, i really think the league has a small ball tendency focusing on shooting. 4. Very very good foot work outside and inside. 5.Very good free throw %. 6. Plus everything that already been said on his subject. Conclusion : NBA isn't ready for player like Zack Edey coming back in this shooting era. Wemby is tall but fancy and a new generation player. Edey has a very well old school game and mentality. I really think it could clash in his favor with the league. I think it could work because of his free throw %. Wemby vs Eday could be HoF stuff every face off.
Zach Edey bout to get him back into the league on some Shaq stopper stuff… too many huge guys becoming stars. Definitely see Tacko being able to sit on the end of the roster to tune up for match ups as a Goliath stopper.
@@eliyarrows2456 ok, I’m not saying that. He’s a comparable body, where you might need a guy to take up the space being that Goliath to matchup against another. Just saying I’d be surprised if he doesn’t get another shot for the matchups of the new centers.
Stamina and health become major concerns with players the size of Edey, but he played a ton of minutes in college. Maybe he'll be able to have a better career with today's sports medicine and load management.
as a purdue fan, it’s hard to not come across as biased, but i’ve been singing edey’s praises as a basketball fan first and foremost since he was a sophomore. the guy is a legitimate talent, i’ve watched nearly every game he played in college and got to witness the growth firsthand. people are worried about the perimeter stuff, but he’s a 7’4 300 pound tank that can handle big minutes and get up and down the floor. he’s not a classic “stiff”. sure he’s not a new age demigod, but he’ll be a double double guy for years to come. it’s just insane to me that people didn’t believe in the eye test until they saw him on a preseason NBA court. i don’t get what was so hard to see about his legitimacy as a prospect and as a talent.
Purdue fan…I was worried at first the he was taken too early. But as this guy explained, he won’t have to shoulder the load and offense doesn’t run thru him therefore less pressure to perform right away He looks like he’s going stronger to the basket so far as compared to college.
I don’t think he will this season, i think he’s gonna need time to develop. But the rate he developed in college is a very good sign for a successful career
Zach Edey is the best college basketball player of the NIL era so far, certainly the best COLLEGE player I've seen since the mid 2010s he was super underappreciated excited to see what happens with him in his NBA career I certainly think he'll do better than a lot of other people do.

As a Grizzlies fan I am unbelievably hyped for this season. I mean it cant be worse than 2018 when we had Vince Carter playing point guard (yes that actually happened)
People that actually watched Zach Edey know he did an amazing transformation in his last two years of college. He was a clear hasheem thabeet two years ago and now he looks more like a potential all star.
Edey is going to be a really good addition to the Griz. He is going to have issues defensively, and there is a question of how many minutes he can play. He's not going to be the second coming of Shaq. But he will be a good rotation player, possibly starter as long as he stays healthy. His matchups are going to have to be managed, he will get played off the floor once and a while. But his offense is real. It's going to be fun to watch a player with an automatic hook shot in the modern game.
There's plenty of bigs in the modern NBA that can't/don't stretch the floor and still manage to be very effective. Gobert, Nurkic, Drummond, Kessler, Allen, and Claxton have carved out good roles in the league so it's always seemed crazy to assume that Edey can't do the same.
people who said edey wouldn’t translated were crazy bro, yeah there’s been a lot of really tall guys but none of them were 2x CPOY and could easily put up 30 & 20 while playing 40 minutes guarding the other teams biggest guy he had myles turner fighting all night, i think edey’s game is gonna be a breathe of fresh air with all these centres who lack a true post game in favour of 3’s
I am over the moon with the possibilities of what this team can do with the big fella. I grew up in an NBA with dominant big men, I don't think younger fans truly understand what it could look like in this era of basketball. They're all so enamored with 3 point shooting that they overlook the fact that he's basically a guaranteed bucket. He's going to show the nerds that you can't outcompute 7'5 290lbs
You touched on a good point about trends in the game. Its only been in the last 10 years that league wide where teams have REALLY focused on perimeter shooting (3pts). AVG games scores have skyrocketed. This is the same style where pundits of Edey say he wont fit. Trends are in a certain sense controlled by the league (rules) and how the game is called (refs). Adam Silver and co by rumor really dislikes that defense has come a secondary factor to offense. I think we are going to see "trends" that make inside the arc play more rewarding thus improving offensively and defensively Edey's value. I think what we will see is an adjust period to Edey's game and how referees call fouls. When Edey first started becoming a factor in Purdue, Matt Painter (the head coach) had to beg in his post game interviews for the referees to start calling fouls with opponents hacking at Edey. I expect eventually the league will REALLY start rewarding post play with foul calls league wide, and when that happens Edey will become something special
This is crazy I said we the Pistons should have drafted Edey. We would have been so dominate. Now we trying to figure things out with chicken wings. Fire the GM
Memphis is no doubt the most interesting team coming into this years season. Edey's summer league and preseason play has already shown he's a matchup problem for just about every team in the nba. He's got that big man energy and he knows what he's about. Ja Wick avenged his dog and is coming back too, bro.....this team is going to be electric to watch. Can't wait, it's gonna be primetime for sure.
I already placed a bet that Zach Edey will win ROTY. I've been watching Memphis Pre-season games the little 5'8" Japanese guy Yuki Kawamura who's looked like the second coming of John Stockton. Kawamura who Grizz fans have been calling Ja Pan (Like Ja Morant get it?) had 8 assists in 20 minutes. He could of had 12 assists if his teammates made their buckets.
It was questionable in the moment! I actually really like Ron Holland, but for a different team. They reached a bit on a guy who is not a good shooter when they should be trying to surround Cade with shooters and spacing!
As a Grizzlies fan, I think we’ll have a great season regardless of how Edey does … as long as our trainers do better than last year. The injuries were just downright absurd.
It’s not the 90s it’s only 2 dominant centers in the nba period just gotta worry about paint protection since it’s more attempts in the paint compared to back in the day which people don’t know
Don’t think he’ll be able to play starter minutes but he’ll be a really good rotational piece. Going against NBA bigs for 82 games is hard, asking him to play 30+ mins a night is not ideal.
Zach Edey seems like he has a great work ethic, and I think that counts for something. He strikes me as hungry to learn and improve, and I could see him developing a serviceable three-point shot, even if it's not his bread and butter, and becoming more versatile and nimble on defense
I've heard that from quite a few Purdue fans. He plays with a big chip on his shoulder and works to get better each game. He's gonna fit in just fine with Memphis.
@@walkerdevin08he also started playing basketball junior year of high school. You’ve got a hungry competitor who has gotten way better every year only 7 years into his basketball life.
One thing that can help Edey is how much the perimeter defenders want to shrink the paint when he has a touch. If Jenkins can draw up some movement around that and trust Edey to make quick decisions they could go him a few more times than expected.
