He should just take a page out of Tim Duncans book. They are more similar in some ways. Duncan was not the flashiest player and his domination was based on methodical movements, not any kind of agility reflex.
Easier said than done. Just because you are moving slowly and pacing your movements doesn't mean you aren't being reflexive. Those micro movements and the ability to mirror is WAY harder. Duncan's proprioception -- his ability to control his body and know where he is in space -- was other worldly. You're thinking of _old_ Tim Duncan but Tim at 22 was an insane athlete. SA literally played him at SF. Edey just can't move his body like that.
I hate these type of comments-....just a lot of wishful thinking. Tim Duncan wasn't fast but he was quick in his prime. Go back and look at some of his game during his prime years. Now if you're comparing his ability to move to Duncan's last year in the league I'll give you that but no way did he have or has ever had Duncan's IQ.

Best analysis of Edey that I've seen. Thanks for the good work. As far as Edey goes, one thing that everyone seems to miss is his trajectory of improvement. He is going to work on every aspect of his game and improve it, and fix those areas if you can go by what he's done every year for the last 6 years ( or whatever it is) since he started playing basketball. Plus it seems like he can be a genuine 3 pt threat. He'll start hitting a couple of them every game, if they get the ball to him. He's smart and he listens and he's got the raw ability. I expect to see him in the all star game either this year or next. We all just hope he stays healthy. He played a lot of minutes every night at Purdue, 30+ I believe, and he never missed a game for injury. He'll get more and more minutes as the season wears on. I expect a double double every night. We'll see, right?
I'm not worried about his defense. Rudy Gobert has similar mobility and nobody ever complains about it. I know that Rudy really makes up for it with his strengths, Edey's strengths are similar and he's a rookie. He'll learn. What I am concerned about is his offense. Zach Edey is fools gold. Can he set screens and get offense rebounds? Yes. But that's all he's going to give Memphis. I've watched him play 3 games and EVERY basket that he scored was from a drop pass into the dunker spot, or from a post up. None of his post ups shown here are with Ja Morant on the floor.Ja Morant was 4th in the league in usage rate before his suspension. This team is going to go through Ja for offense. That means Edey is not posting up, clogging up the lane for Morant. Edey will set screens and not get a whole lot of pick and roll touches (he's got a lot of growing to do as the roll man). Edey will also get drop passes and lobs in the dunker spot. He will get offensive rebound put backs. His post up game will not happen at all when Ja is on the floor. I expect him to be a Steven Adams 2.0 it's 2024, not 1994. Post up touches are not going to go to him in the regular season. Also, I'm going to reveal my age here a bit and tell a story. Coaches like to decide what a player is going to be and put them in a box. Players can either live in that box, or be so damn amazing that they don't listen to their coach, and get some back up from management to keep doing what they do, and then the coach gets fired and the player can thrive. Case in point: Kurt Thomas. He was another generational big man in college. He averaged 30 points per game in division one college. That's almost unheard of. Kareem Abdul Jabbar type of college numbers. He also fell in the draft. What's really crazy was that this was in the 90's when post play was big, but I digress. The Knicks got Thomas in the late first round. I watched every Knicks game that I could the following season, thinking that Thomas was going to be the steal of the draft. He never got into the game. Finally, one game late into the season, with Patrick Ewing out due to injuries and foul trouble (IIRC Someone else got injured mid game too) Jeff Van Gundy had to put Tomas in the game. Thomas goes straight to the block, posts up, and scores. Van Gundy glares at him. Next time down, Thomas on the block, posts up and shoots. Van Gundy is yelling at him. Thomas goes like 3 for 4 over the next 8 possessions or so. Van Gundy is pissed. He yanks Thomas from the game. Kurt Thomas played 20 years in the NBA. All that he ever did was rebound and shoot put backs on offensive boards. This is exactly what is going to happen to Zach Edey.
in Memphis and Ja defense, Ja didn't play a lot of preseason game maybe 3-4 games. Also Ja only played about 20 mins a piece give or take a minute. A lot of times Ja and Edey weren't on the court together either. Edey got a lot of play with Yuki and Jaylen Wells. Few runs with Desmond Bane as well. I have a few reason on why that was the case - but i think your overacting on preseason. First couple of games the Grizz admitted they needed to use Edey more. Notice in game 3 or 4 the ball was coming to him more and he had more post up. Keep in mind the last time this team had a big that can score (A center) was with Jonas V...That was like 5 years ago.. so they have to get use to having a big man threat in the paint to feed.

Jokic will play him like he does Wemby: he will use floaters to neutralize the height/length advantage. Jokic has great touch and if Wemby and Gobert can’t stop him no one really will
It's funny. Jokic likes to use his weight to play bully ball, but when he runs into one of the few physical defenders in the league, he doesn't like it. I can still remember what Dwight Howard did to him in the playoffs. Then again, Jokic can step out and shoot 3's on Edey all day long. He didn't really have a 3 point game in 2020 on the level that he does now.
Most of the "good defensive possesions" are against rotational players. I think they can have a poor mans bucks defense with Lopez in drop and Giannis roaming. He should be decent enough on the drop and Jaren Jackson Jr is a great defender to help off of the offense certainty really helps his case regardless is an upgrade at the center position for the Grizzles. In a playoff setting I'm curious how much teams will switch hunt him in the pick n roll. Grizzles could certainly use a good defender on the wing to kind of round out the defense.
I’m rooting for him I hate how nowadays we say “he’s a post player he won’t work out” like no, elite post scoring will ALWAYS have a place in basketball
I see people say that him playing all four years in college as a negative as most stars are one and done. However for Edey, he didnt start playing basketball until high school. He needed that extra time to develop, and I think it will pay off.
Watching this video just makes me realize how great Wemby is. He lierally is better in every aspect: mobility, timing, smoothness, hand & eye coordination, putting a hand in balls coming in the lane... Just everything
He's gonna have to use his intelligence, awareness and understanding to mitigate his weaknesses. He's also not a terrible free throw shooter of other players his stature which really helps.
RUSTY BUCKETS WAS NOT! That man has been singing the praises for this man since he got drafted to Memphis and has been adamant on how he can be an immediate impact on the court.
Edey is a no-brainer. He takes up a lot of space in the paint and those long arms are enough to get a driver to think again. I think he has tremendous potential.
I didn’t understand the major skepticisms for him on Memphis considering that is one of, if not the best situation for him right out the gate. Dam near every flaw he has can be covered up by his teammates. Sure he isn’t an elite prospect or top 3 but in the right situation he’s a net positive player for a team
He pulls defenders into the paint in an era when you want them at the 3pt line. So…no…he’s not in a good situation. He’s the opposite of what you want when your best player is Ja.
-- When I saw him last year (2023), I thought he was a G leaguer at best. But in these clips this year? He's gotten a lot better and looks like a decent starting Center. He'll be worth $20M/yr easy.
In terms of a jumpshot I would rather see him take a page out of Jonas Valanciunas’ book and gain a mid range. A pick and roll but they drop really hard on Morant. So Edey stops at the foul line for a nearly uncontested able jumpshot. He’s already a solid free throw shooter. He doesn’t need to be a 3pt threat. But if he can hit some middys at an efficient rate, it could make life easier for the pick & roll ball handlers, and it could open up more passing lanes if the big has to be dragged out to the mid range.
Lot of video of guys missing wide open shots. Not saying you're wrong, but Edey was at best an average defender in college. Don't quite buy it in the pros at this point, but I guess we'll see.
I don’t understand I watched people shit on Zack eddey for the past year but I never saw a problem with his game he looks great none stop it’s awesome to watch glad I didn’t write bro off
Why do we have to be so extreme all the time? Is he a generational talent, no. Is he a perinneal All-Star? Depends on the strength of the C position, his teammates, and record. He's not going to be a lock. Is he a starter in this league? Absolutely! I don't understand why that's not a great accomplishment. He's an upgrade from Steven Adams, who is an impactful starter on playoff teams. In a weak draft, why isn't that successful?
bro if i was a 7'4 center the first move i would master would be the dream shake, then the hook shot. how do you go through high school and college and not learn these if you're that tall at that age.
The game has changed. Look at all the 7footers in the last 10 years. No one does it anymore because 1v1s on the paint is not efficient anymore and in this fast pace era, you don't want to spend 10 seconds on the paint to dream shake for 2 points when the opposing team can spend 5 to score a 3.
I like unique players like Edey makes the league more interesting. I’m rooting for a ton of skilled big men anything but the three point shot which has made the game more boring than anything the past decade
I don’t think he will ever have Wemby’s talents. So he should forget the Finesse game, and go the brut force route. He should bulk up to 400 pounds and punish people like Shaq did back in the day
Edey will be fine in the league his rim protection is good, he will get exploited at times just because he is naturally slow footed but he will be good plus he’s gonna have triple J ready to swat a ball into the stands from the weak side.
How did 7 foot 4 with size(not skin and bones) with a soft touch and mean footwork not look like it would "translate" to the NBA? You mfs tweakin 😂😂 yet wembys skinny ass was the talk of the town. I know we're obsessed with threes but sometimes I'd rather take a 60% 2 than a 30% 3 🤷 I mean the goal is to still score my points right? Remember he has the one thing that CANT be taught, the rest is young and ready to mold...
Edey is a victim of the stupidity of the current trend. For one thing, I believe that there is something fundamentally wrong with a team's defense if the center is being forced into a situation to defend a guard in the perimeter. A center's job is to defend the lane and the rim. That is it. Edey has a better upside compared to the Number 1 and Number 2 picks from the 2024 draft.
I mean, you can say that, but part of a great offense is forcing the defense to switch. If the offense maneuvers smartly using screens and positioning to where the option is either your center defending the point guard, or nobody defending the point guard, the center has to make that switch. It's easy to just say "that should never happen" but realistically you can't expect every single defensive rotation to be perfect in every single possession, and for every single defensive player to always make the right read on screens, etc. Modern basketball requires centers to do more than just stand in the paint, and guys that can only stand in the paint, like Rudy Gobert, get taken advantage of for it by good offenses. Would you say there was something fundamentally wrong with the Timberwolves' defense last season in the WCF, or is that just Luka and the Mavericks playing fantastic offense?
@@timob1681 Again. There is something fundamentally wrong in a defense if the center is forced to defend a guard IN THE PERIMETER. Defending the perimeter is the job of guards and wings. If the offense forced a switch involving the center, it is the guards and the wings that need to respond . " Would you say there was something fundamentally wrong with the Timberwolves' defense last season in the WCF, or is that just Luka and the Mavericks playing fantastic offense?" Yes. The Guards and The Wings are very slow to respond to forced switches.
No guard is good enough to get through EVERY screen. The very best guys like Caruso and Jrue might get through 50%. Someone like Dame or Trae gets through like 5% of the time. If the center doesn't come out you are just conceding wide open threes. Have fun defending the paint when the other team is generating 1.15 points per possession in the halfcourt 🤦♂️ LA almost lost to Sacramento in _2002_ because Shaq wouldn't come out. And that was with Mike Bibby taking 18-20 foot jumpers not threes
Leagues gone too far away from big bodies. Talking head media got everyone brainwashed thinking huge dudes without modern shooting/handles like Gobert are detrimental to a roster, even when he wins a DPOY and helped his team to a WCF. Will be interesting to see Zach against some bigger bodies in the regular season. Pacers, Mavs and Heat arent huge teams, even Vuc isn’t a 7 footer. Excited to see him against his peers.
Dude has zero blocks from outside the paint and thats with g league level players shooting in front of him. truth be told he has quicker feet not not quick enough but his feel have less to do with his reaction time it is just still slow anyone and I mean anyone can shoot over him from outside.
He won’t touch the floor in the playoffs. Every single opposing coach will make him guard a high pick and roll every possession until he’s subbed out. If Rudy Gobert can be played out of the playoffs, this slow footed white guy doesn’t stand a chance

@9:34 Edey was definitely throwing those elbows like the big man Shaq. Gafford got leveled 😂
I’m rooting for him I hate how nowadays we say “he’s a post player he won’t work out” like no, elite post scoring will ALWAYS have a place in basketball
Great video HV, what do you think Edey’s ceiling Is, 5-6 years from now barring health?
I feel like you can get better and learn how to time blocks over time. Definitely a skill Edey will learn as he gets more reps.
Great video Papi Venue
By the literal definition of the word, shouldn't we hear the world "generational" ... once a generation?
I see people say that him playing all four years in college as a negative as most stars are one and done. However for Edey, he didnt start playing basketball until high school. He needed that extra time to develop, and I think it will pay off.
Watching this video just makes me realize how great Wemby is. He lierally is better in every aspect: mobility, timing, smoothness, hand & eye coordination, putting a hand in balls coming in the lane... Just everything
Generational 1st pick for a reason😅
@@hungnao282 Exaclty, I don't want to sound disrespectful towards Edey, it's about appreciating Wemby really
@@andredornelles8014 that's cool peep the standings and see where Memphis is at and where wemby and the Spurs are at Christmas.
He's gonna have to use his intelligence, awareness and understanding to mitigate his weaknesses. He's also not a terrible free throw shooter of other players his stature which really helps.
Goat Basketball TH-cam Creater.
in what world is timing not something you can improve on
RUSTY BUCKETS WAS NOT! That man has been singing the praises for this man since he got drafted to Memphis and has been adamant on how he can be an immediate impact on the court.
3:32 im sorry wtf did i just watch the ball handler get away with
Edey is a no-brainer. He takes up a lot of space in the paint and those long arms are enough to get a driver to think again. I think he has tremendous potential.
Defense is far more difficult to learn than offense, i just hope the Grizzlies coaching staff have enough patience to truly develop him
I didn’t understand the major skepticisms for him on Memphis considering that is one of, if not the best situation for him right out the gate.
Dark horse for ROY
He will play 14-16 minutes a game unless he learns to shoot 3s. He’s not winning ROY.
We have second coming of Grit and Grind Grizzlies before GTA 6
Make a breakdown on Donovan Clingan please!!!!
Purdue fan here.
All we've heard the last five years is
HUuur Duur......
He's just tall!!!!
-- When I saw him last year (2023), I thought he was a G leaguer at best.
But in these clips this year? He's gotten a lot better and looks like a decent starting Center. He'll be worth $20M/yr easy.
This guy is bigger and taller than Wemby.. kinda like Yao Ming type guy . Just saying
Im so glad Memphis grabbed him. He was my mock pick for the Grizzlies
I hope he ends up as a more defensive/offensive capable steven Adams type player.
Footwork and dropping another 10lbs would make a huge difference for him with the 10-15 he has already lost
Lot of video of guys missing wide open shots. Not saying you're wrong, but Edey was at best an average defender in college. Don't quite buy it in the pros at this point, but I guess we'll see.
Edey is a monster, only concern is injuries
lane defence going up
If I were him, ALL the training would be about mobility.
Edey vs Wemby vs Jokic vs Embiid vs Sengun... ooooh.
I don’t understand I watched people shit on Zack eddey for the past year but I never saw a problem with his game he looks great none stop it’s awesome to watch glad I didn’t write bro off
You content creators love preseason….
I love basketball.
Hopefully they'll make him what they SHOULDVE made Santi Aldama
Why do we have to be so extreme all the time?
Is he a generational talent, no. Is he a perinneal All-Star? Depends on the strength of the C position, his teammates, and record. He's not going to be a lock.
Is he a starter in this league? Absolutely! I don't understand why that's not a great accomplishment.
He's an upgrade from Steven Adams, who is an impactful starter on playoff teams. In a weak draft, why isn't that successful?
Edey looks like American Yao Ming
I can't believe Edey can basketball and here's why!
Looking at edey stiffness make me wonder how much of an rare alien wemby is
3:13 nah he just missed😔
bro if i was a 7'4 center the first move i would master would be the dream shake, then the hook shot. how do you go through high school and college and not learn these if you're that tall at that age.
Real bigs are making a comeback
The next Steven Adam
“They” are usually wrong.
I like unique players like Edey makes the league more interesting. I’m rooting for a ton of skilled big men anything but the three point shot which has made the game more boring than anything the past decade
I don’t think he will ever have Wemby’s talents. So he should forget the Finesse game, and go the brut force route. He should bulk up to 400 pounds and punish people like Shaq did back in the day
This guy's going to be better than wemby.
Dude with JJJ next to him he will be just fine
he just dropped 23 points I think he's fine
Literally was preseason
" Would you say there was something fundamentally wrong with the Timberwolves' defense last season in the WCF, or is that just Luka and the Mavericks playing fantastic offense?"
Yes. The Guards and The Wings are very slow to respond to forced switches.
@@leomarlonestrada5954 okay dude
No guard is good enough to get through EVERY screen. The very best guys like Caruso and Jrue might get through 50%. Someone like Dame or Trae gets through like 5% of the time.
If the center doesn't come out you are just conceding wide open threes.
Have fun defending the paint when the other team is generating 1.15 points per possession in the halfcourt 🤦♂️
LA almost lost to Sacramento in _2002_ because Shaq wouldn't come out. And that was with Mike Bibby taking 18-20 foot jumpers not threes
@@michaelahurt No Center should be tasked to defend against guards on the perimeter.
It is that SIMPLE.
Tim Duncan and David Robinson Did So.
Well done. He will be a 20-10 guys in two years. Great draft pick in a weak draft
What do you mean timing can't be taught ? Are you really sure about this statement ?
1 in 5 men suffer from Edey.
He greater than Wemby
Leagues gone too far away from big bodies. Talking head media got everyone brainwashed thinking huge dudes without modern shooting/handles like Gobert are detrimental to a roster, even when he wins a DPOY and helped his team to a WCF. Will be interesting to see Zach against some bigger bodies in the regular season. Pacers, Mavs and Heat arent huge teams, even Vuc isn’t a 7 footer. Excited to see him against his peers.
The so caled experts were wrong. But i wasnt
If Ja stays out of trouble, they’ll beat the lakers in the play in
Yao Ming II
A lot of rookie mistakes. He'll get better.
Dude has zero blocks from outside the paint and thats with g league level players shooting in front of him. truth be told he has quicker feet not not quick enough but his feel have less to do with his reaction time it is just still slow anyone and I mean anyone can shoot over him from outside.
Looks good to me
7"4 300 pounds i need to see how he matches up witb joker
He's going for 3 pts 1/8 fg 0 blck and 5 TO agaisnt Wemby 🤣
He will destroy Wemby
Just like kai sotto
He won’t touch the floor in the playoffs. Every single opposing coach will make him guard a high pick and roll every possession until he’s subbed out. If Rudy Gobert can be played out of the playoffs, this slow footed white guy doesn’t stand a chance
Not a modern day big bro he’ll be out of the league in 2 years
Can he play a real game and last a long career first omg
Edey can play, Grizzlies will be nice and a top 3 seed this year if Ja stays healthy & outta trouble
ROTY
way too slow
Zach edey’s floor is Rudy gobert
We got a rudy gobert regen
tall ahh sneako hooping
I can’t unsee it now 😭
