It is not donating, it is offering to Brahman. When you give Brahman, you actually give to gain. Only in Indian culture, the acceptor is considered greater than the giver. Instead of Laddu, it is better to offer chana dal (chick peas) and a pair of yellow cloths to your Pandit ji. It is very very important for a Grihasta to support Brahman who lives only on Purohitya as their means of living. Only because few such Purohits are regularly chanting Vedas, we still have some water to sustain, and few rains for food. So don't get them cheap, and support that endangered profession.
